Beeing with the Boss....

We went to check the hives this afternoon, Boss, Woodsman Hans and I. I stayed a bit back as I was barefoot, mostly, and bees kept crawling on my feet. Which is kind of freaky. Boss is wearing the latest in Bee-wear, a Half-Suit. Very handy when you don't want to don the entire suit. Notice he is also wearing wellies, so bees can't crawl on his feet.

We checked the Purple Yvaine hive first, as Boss had noticed on his morning walk that it was angry, and lots of bees were crawling around on the top, which might mean they are thinking of SWARMING! They hadn't, and we couldn't exactly get down far enough into the brood boxes to see if there were any Queen Cells. The top Super was nearly full, so we added another.

Supers are the smaller boxes that we get to steal. Which we did.

The Yellow Hive, which The Birdchick and I had been calling the Stoner Hive, as it never seemed to do anything, was ready for another Super, may be our best yet. The Red Juliet Hive, which swarmed, had a lot of Bees, which I thought meant good things as I thought Workers only lived about three weeks. Boss said, no, up to a year.

A quick trip to Google showed me that it takes three weeks to turn INTO a worker, then they live somewhere between 1-4 months, a few weeks, or up to, just over or under a year. Depending on the site you visit. I'll try and find some more information on this, the definitive source as it were, and let you know. I need to know.

Very typical for Bee Information. Anything you can find that is said as true by 6 Beekeepers, you can find the opposite said by another 6.

We harvested (Read: Stole) a Super of Ross Rounds. No idea why they are called that. But this is honey that stays in the comb and is not extracted.

The first trick you need to do is get the Bees OUT of the Ross Rounds. Tricky. You can spray a cloth, which you put in the top of a spare hive lip with a Bee Be Gone spray that smells like Christmas Cookies. Very Almond. Bees are meant to hate this. They will them fly back to the hive.

Unless they don't, them you have to go and shake them. (Unless you are barefoot) Which does nothing some of the time, especially if the frames are too heavy.

We took the frames apart with our handy hive tools, and gently brushed the bees away, and put them back, with Christmas Cookie Top, and carried them back to the house. We left them alone a while and when all but a few hearty defenders had left, brought them in.

Popped them out, snapped on some tops and it is Comb Honey for dinner tonight! Or for Breakfast.

We have more to extract, and more Ross Rounds together. I am not sure when the real Harvest is happening. Or if we do it all at once, or like today, a box or so at a time.

I love being with the Bees. And I love it that my Boss is home to Bee with.

Love and Bees,
Lorraine

I can't think of a good bee pun. So I'll just say "Ooh!" And "Nifty!"

Ooh! Nifty! :)

So is Juliet hanging in there? Will that hive last through till spring, do you think? Sounds like they're pretty active in spite of the swarm.

I love the bee posts too - vicarious bee keeping for Fiends. I have to ask though, why did you go to the hives in bare feet? And did Boss have something on to stop the bees crawling down into his boots?
Yah for Boss being home.

Honey will keep, literally, forever if it is capped. Bees are GOOD.

Juliet has a fine chance of making it. They all do, they have all made enough for winter food.

question for fiends, do the bing commercials make you want to throw the remote at the tv, or is it just me?

At 03:53 Blogger Marjorie said...

I love the bee posts. And having one totday was a particular bonus as it makes up for missing a bee-talk. I had a flyer about a free 'intro to beekeeping' talk by a local beekeeper which was taking place last night, and was planning to go, but by the time I finished work I had the mother of al sick headaches so I ened up coming home to lie down in a darkened room instead.

Those ross rounds look very tempting. I've never actually eaten honeycomb - perhaps I should see whether the farm shop has any, and try it..

At 05:05 Blogger Unknown said...

When I was at university (quite a few years ago now...) we did a 2 week field trip to Portugal (win!) and our group's particular project was on honey bees. I seem to recall being told that once they get to be workers at several weeks old, they then live on average another 3 weeks or so.

Just in case you're interested, the project involved catching the bees in little tubes, gassing them to sleep and sticking little numbered discs to their backs with superglue. We also counted the notches in their wings, which in theory told us how old the bees were - older bees would have more. Then when they woke up we let them go free, and watched what they did on the lavendar patch. Turns out that the older a bee was and the more notches it had, the less picky it was about which flowers it visited! Younger bees made more hops before staying to collect nectar.

At 07:13 Blogger Phiala said...

Yum! I could use some of that for my breakfast.

It is a rainy Saturday morning, and the cat thinks that getting off the couch would be completely inappropriate. I'm not sure what I will have for breakfast if I'm not allowed up, or when I will get it.

But the purring cat wins, of course.

Oh, um, the Bing commercials? I don't really watch TV, except on DVD, so I wouldn't know. All I know is that when I'm on YouTube, I'll get those Brooke Shields Colgate advertisements and THEY make me want to throw something.

Hi Lorraine, I came via twitter...

Update on my earlier comments! I went to a food festival today and there was a nice lady there from the UK beekeepers association. I asked her the question and she told me that how long a worker bee lives depends on the time of year that they hatched. So in the height of summer they live 3-4 weeks, but ones from later in the year can last up to a year! Everyone's right!

At 13:55 Blogger vampi said...

ridiculous headline of the day

i thought the fiends might find this as funny as i did. why is the news?

At 14:04 Blogger Phiala said...

It's news because of the very odd policies regarding sharp objects in the UK.

Friend of a friend was carded when buying plastic cutlery. You know, picnicware. It's illegal to sell knives to anyone under 16, and the clerk was taking the rule very literally.

I am dutifully working today despite the great urge to spend a rainy Saturday curled up on the couch with dog, cat, novel.

At 15:12 Blogger vampi said...

seriously? i had no idea, what a silly rule. i really think it's somewhat silly to go to a library and ask for scissors. honestly i don't know if i'd loan mine out, but not because i was scared of someone hurting me, more because i'd be scared they would steal it.

At 15:19 Blogger Dan Guy said...

Ticky box drive-by!

At 15:25 Blogger Marjorie said...

Yup, hysteria about teens carrying knives (after all, it's not as though they can pick them up at home if they can't buy them...) means no knives to under 16, plus people getting paranoid about 'Health & safety' - usually when quoted it turns out that the Health & Safety Executive didn't issue any any such recommendation...

I'm feeling happy. just bought tickets for JoCo & Paul&Storm on 15th Nov, and also for Mitch Benn on (IIRC) 5th Nov.

Lovely day hanging out with Elyse Marshell, who was in town for the Midwest booksellers event. Had a fine time working all day and then cooking dinner.

Seems to be nine on a saturday night. I am thinking LA Ink, then bed. DO not pass hot tub....

Early day and a long one tomorrow. Then work starts for real on Monday.

Brought a better computer over tonight, to replace this very old one that seems to no longer want to speak to my wireless thing.

(I am typing on the floor, tethered to the modem. How archaic)

I am power cord challenged. SO new (but still older than my current at work, my one before that if you see what I mean) sits, by itself, looking sleek, but doing nothing.

At 21:19 Blogger Jess said...

We're still on a modem-- though it's a flashy dsl modem with lights and whatnot. Wireless is still a mysterious, foreign concept to me, as are things like Why Fie and blue teeth. I like plugs. I know where I am with plugs. SCSI all the way, man.

Just listened to your Scary Owl. I dig a Scary Owl! That's one I've never heard before.

At 21:24 Blogger EmilyLady said...

Does a hot tub ever get boring?

Tomorrow is not going to be a REAL Sunday. But it's worth it. Church choir in the morning, which is just sort of refreshing in its way. Sounds a bit odd, I know. And then a YUGA (Youth United for Global Awareness) meeting. My first. Should be a most interesting three hours.

At 22:05 Blogger HellZiggy said...

No WiFi? How will you survive?
When the wifi went out on my old laptop I had to give up my usual spot on the couch and take the laptop into another room to be connected. It just wasn't right!

Of course, tonight I really shouldn't be on the internet because I have a bunch of pictures to process. I was out at the Ft. Snelling Upper Post taking pictures today. Lots of cool old buildings out there.

Morning!

No, Emily, hot tuns never get boring.

My modem is a DSL cable too. Not liking this on the floor bit. Must find the power chord to the other computer.

Lovely morning with Bengals, off to work shortly. Bringing the Skelly home tonight, we will see if this bathtub idea is a workable one. You never really know with these things, sometimes they work in your head. but don't quite end up like you thought.

I'll do a new post tonight and we will see.

Wilds of NC? I beg your pardon - we are not wild here - well let me rethink that...

Went to a bookstore in Asheville NC last week - they are entering the contest to have the best Graveyard Book Halloween party. One of the staff is a big fan of the Boss, so they have 2! dedicated sections for him, with fun facts about him and posters. A great independent bookstore - Malaprops. So I had to buy Smoke and Mirrors as it was the only book by him that I don't have.

At 13:33 Blogger Beez said...

Hi Na! I suspect we are not too far behind you weather-wise.

..what!?! No hitting!

At 14:18 Blogger Chantrelle said...

Nope, hot tubs never get boring. We opted for a jetted bathtub since we had power limitations and couldn't get a dedicated circuit for the outdoor tub (plus have a small backyard). But that never gets boring either!!

My mom, stepdad, grandma and my mom's cousin are on their way over. Cousin's from NC and wants to go wine tasting so I'm going to take them to a local place that's pretty and close but still decent. Not the best wine in the world but good and they're not connoisseurs anyway! ;-)

Hope everyone's having (or had, depending on your locale) a lovely weekend!

At 14:26 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Had, in my case and it felt really short (I am sure somebody must be stealing some of my free time).
Food has been produced - some of it eaten even - tisane made and drunk, quick poem written and posted, there isn't much left to do but to get ready for the night and plunge under the covers with a book.
