Mostly Cabal...

A late night post from a rather tired me, but it's certainly time for one, and I seem to be still awake, so here you go...

Great couple of nights of shows, despite the new Plan (not mine) of switching between playing outdoors on the patio, and then moving in. Lot more work, but I do have to admit the outside is kind of fun. It's very like having to play two gigs in the same night, different crowds and very different shows. It may work. But it is truly a lot of work.

Still tho, playing and making it work, and making people happy is so very far the best thing ever, that I do maintain, it is well worth it. Paid back. In Spades.

First off, since I wanted a picture of Cabal tonight, him being the main focus of this post, here you go. There's the Boss, with Jason Webley last winter, and out Hero, Cabal. It seemed appropriate this being the last night of the EvelynEvelyn tour and me having a bit of EvelynEvelyn withdrawal and missing everyone on the tour..

Moving on, as the Boss has not done any sort of detailed post, him being involved in writing and nothing but lately, I will fill you in on the Cabal situation. He's been limping, and not moving well, which has gotten worse over the last couple of weeks.

Last year he had a torn ACL tendon, on one of his back legs, and he now seems to have done the same to his other back leg. NO idea HOW. He's a dog, these things happen. The remedy for this is surgery, once again. It isn't fun, but he will recover from it. (Doggie Health Insurance has WAY paid off here)

He'll be pretty restricted for the next six to eight weeks. He goes to the U of MN vet clinic on Wednesday and it is then we find out exactly what the schedule, timeline and prognosis will be. I will keep you posted.

For those of you confused, on the Twitter feed, the Hummingbird in the house is a very much error and NOT an idea we have had to improve the ambience.

I wanted to write more and tell you about meeting amazing photographer Ben Zvan today, and him bringing me a canvas print of the coolest picture ever, (me and Amanda Palmer on stage together) and also a pretty darn cool photo of the Boss from that same show for her, but I am fading fast. Much Rock was happened.

As I am typing this I have been worried about Mim nipping down to pee on me, as she has been. Well she hasn't, but Magic just BIT MY FOOT!

Excuse my language, but WTF?????

Ah. Good to be home.

Love and All Furry Friends,
Lorraine

  1. Uh oh...not so good about Cabal's leg. He's gone and done a Shiraz on you (doing both legs) Hope Boss will be home after the op (presuming Cabal has another op) so that you get some time to spend at home with those weeing & biting Bengals! I think Magic was just telling you how much he has missed you.
Sounds like I missed something interesting on twitter...

  2. Some dogs have knees that are just prone to the ACL thing. When our dog blew one of hers, the vet said it was a matter of when, not if, the other went -- and sure enough, during a simple "chase the feral cat out from behind the shed" expedition, she blew the other. The good news is that the new knees are generally quite sound. Is he getting the TPLO surgery or a basic ligament rebuild? (DJ had the latter, worked fine.)

  3. Maybe he find you tasty?

Poor Cabal! I hope this one goes well - he was so much better after the last operation. Will Miss Lola miss her friend?
(And yes, thank goodness for animal health insurance)

    ReplyDelete
  4. Hope Cabal recuperates without much trouble!

Maybe Magic bit your foot because he loves your foot. Serious Black bites my feet all the time. It's only a problem when I'm sleeping and end up kicking him across the room.

  5. Sounds like the sets are fun though. Glad you are enjoying it even with the extra work

  6. *twirls*

i bet playing in both areas is nice, especially while you have the weather for it. moving the stuff i can totally see as inconvenient. i would offer to be honorary roadie, but the commute is a bit much.

:( for cabal, poor guy. will having this surgery be easier now that it's warm? at least the cold won't be an issue with the shaved leg.

    ReplyDelete
  7. *twirls Vampi the other way*

    ReplyDelete
  8. Did you manage to get the hummingbird out of the house, in the end?
Poor Cabal. At least he chose a better time of year this time round - although I guess keeping him from playing bouncily with Lola while he recuperates might be hard work.

The gig sounds fun, but very hard work, isn't the patio at the opposite end of the hotel to the pub? I hope they help out with moving your stuff.

I got nothing on the Magic situation. Was it a nip or an honest-to-goodness blood-drawing bite? I mean, the first could just be excitement...

  9. Ouchies but thank goodness for insurance. All my cats are insured too and with Louie's asthma, it sure can come in handy when the meds and vet visits mount up.

It seems that tendon injuries can be quite common in some dogs. What a palaver though, there is nothing quite so exhausting than having to contend with an injured animal at home. When Tonks injured his paw and had to be confined in the house for weeks, I almost went crazy with him.

Anyho, sending Cabal lots of love and get well soon vibes.

Magic loves you and also pinkies look like mousies. I always keep my feet firmly under the duvet to avoid chompage.

And yay for Mim not peeing on you! (Good girl Mim!!)

    ReplyDelete
  10. At least you had a year long reprieve before Cabal tore the other ligament. My dog had surgeries on hers in July and then in October. I didn't even have a chance to halfway forget how horrible the rest/rehab period was for both of us!

    ReplyDelete
  11. So sorry about the leg. And pet insurance? Have been thinking about getting some, so it is a good idea?

Going to watch Steve take his refuge vows today!

Probably too late for this advice but . . . the easiest way to catch an indoor hummingbird is to turn out all the lights. Hummingbirds don't fly in the dark, so they'll flutter straight down to the ground when it gets dark. Then you get a flashlight to find them, pick them up and get them outside.

Of course, when I was trying to get the series of hummingbirds out of my garage I didn't have any feline assistance. That might complicate things.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Poor Cabal. And with Lola saying "Come run, come run" it isn't going to be any easier!
And ouch! Your toes! Hope it wasn't a deep bite.

Its been too long since I checked in but I'm doing the Can't Stop The Serenity Screening in Toronto and it takes all my time. But next week is the screening and then I will be free to read up on all these happenings.
There is one in Minneapolis this year, you know!

    ReplyDelete
  14. *Waves to Mary* I immediately thought of DJ needing both knees done when I read this post :-)

Yeah, keeping him quiet like you had to do last year, but with a puppy around this time might be a bit, um, challenging. Poor pup! At least it's warmer this time so Boss won't have to take him south.

Good thing you have a box of twirls, Vampi!

Maybe Magic just wanted to make sure you hadn't forgotten he was there (as if you could!). Or was just being a brat. Hopefully he didn't draw blood, or bite deep, you don't need to end up on IV antibiotics!

  15. MacGregor blew out one ACL and the vet said to watch him because the other one would go too. Sure enough, the next year we went through it all again.

I imaging Cabal is having TPLO because of his size. MacGregor is a cocker spaniel so he just got the basic ligament rebuild. It's been a couple of years, though, and he seems to be having some problem with the first leg. We're going back to the vet this week.

    I'm thrilled.

Give Cabal a hug for MacGregor! :)

My best to Cabal for a speedy recovery. Sending him all sorts of good thoughts. Also good thoughts to what must be a very brave hummingbird to do a reconnoiter around the house. And lastly good thoughts to you for providing much ROCK.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Morning all!

    I am a zombie!!!!

The Hummingbird tho appears to be out of the house.

Lola is FULL of energy, I think she may be going to Doggie Day care while Cabal recovers. He;s not moving well, and once he has his surgery, he won't be moving at ALL for a while...

I am going to be a sloth today. Totally and completely, Have already turned down riding and a brunch. I want to be in my home and have a day OFF.

Which hasn't happened since end of May, kid you not.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh no! I didn't know bengal bites turned you into a zombie. I guess I don't want one... Or, is it just the F1s?

  19. Anonymous11:38

I'm behind and I missed the horsie post altogether :( sorry and sorry about Cabal. I hope the surgery goes well.

We're having our own little vet adventures which is one reason I've been so busy. Out of 6 cats we only have 2 1/2 that are healthy. I guess that is the problem when your kitty family starts to age. Next week looks rough.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Aw, poor Big Dog. Lola in doggie day care is probably the -best- plan. Puppies are such instigators. They can't help it.

I think Mim and Magic are each trying to claim you for their own in their individual ways.
Can't wait to see what happens when the rest of the clan joins in. Heh.

I am taking a day off today too. I can't quite remember the last one, but next few weeks are going to be wild n' wooley 70-80 hour ones.
So much needing to be done around the house though....blergh.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hugs for the big goofy sweet Cabal.

    ReplyDelete
  22. And I totally thought he was a snowman. In that picture, that is.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Glad last night's gig went much better, even if you did have to do the out/in switch again. :)

Sorry to hear about Cabal needing surgery on the other leg. Poor Cabal! And poor Lola for losing a playmate for several weeks. Poor Team Gaiman for having to keep them separate so that Cabal can heal.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Woohoo! It's the shortest day! (Although because I have a Vile Cold it feels more like the longest day here at work.) Just thought I'd share...

Anyhoo, scritches for poor Cabal, and for Lola, who will be wondering where her playmate has gone.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Isn't it great Ms T -our days will start to get longer again. Come back sun.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yup. Definitely missing the sun. :)

I remember a visiting prof from Arizona commenting that she couldn't understand why the landscape looked so, well, muddy in The Piano. Until she got here. (Heh. It's just a little damp at the moment.)

    ReplyDelete
  27. *helpfully pushes the sun southward*

    *mopes a bit*

sending virtual pats to Cabal the poor pup, & stoic thoughts for his care-givers; hope all goes well.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think you need all the sun you can get Na! I can tell its the shortest day of the year - I'm cold.

  29. Have a good Solstice, Sally.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Poor Cabal. It's terrible to see our critters in pain. I hope the surgery goes well and the healing goes quickly.

I too wish I lived close enough to be your roadie for these occasions.

In two days I'll be on my way to D.C. for a conference. I'm long past looking forward to these things. But I will get to see Cecily and Lynn! That *is* something to look forward to.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I hope Cabal recovers as well as he did with the last surgery. As the cats, I'm starting to think maybe they don't like where you are sitting...

  32. Got to see Play on Birds last night (starring Birdchick and NBB). Very fun. Had an almost overwhelming urge to yell 'show us your tits' when she broke out the birds with dirty names.

  34. Oh, poor Cabal and poor Lorraine and poor Boss If He's In Town. Otherwise Poor, Poor Lorraine.

"And I totally thought he was a snowman. In that picture, that is." Me, too! And I was also thinking, "Wow. Snow in late June! Harsh." S'okay - the heat has addled the few brains I have.

I am in Full Work-Avoidance Mode today. In stark contrast to my usual terrifying efficiency, that is.

Just started a new book - "Sandman Slim" by Richard Kadrey. Very noir supernatural fiction. Only a couple dozen pages in but I already like it a lot.

I had a German Shepherd growing up, and she blew out her knee. How, you may ask, big dangerous dog that she appeared to be? Chasing bees and butterflies, something of which I hear are near Cabal's house!

  37. New kittens are here! Photos on FB and Twitter, do all of you (or all who want to see)follow me somewhere?

I think most of you do.

Not many photos yet. They're still finding their way around the house. And being a little wild in the meantime. For such tiny creatures they have heavy paws!

I hope you and Mr. Gaiman won't put your backs out again. Having to carry him down the steps up and down every day because he won't go to bathroom on the deck. I hope you can find a space for him on the first floor.
As for the food biting, Magic might have thought your foot was food.

  41. I love having a weekend away at my dad's cabin. No internet, no phone, no electricity. But a kitchen and a bed. But I hate coming home to the frantic list of shit to do before morning.
I start my new job at ben's school tomorrow. Just 2 days this week and then whenever they need me this summer until i start 2 days a week in mid-august through the end of the school year....weird to have a (paid, non-mom) job again, it's been a while!

OK, insane to-do list. Gotta get to it.

Lorraine, I almost called you on my drive home because, well, I was bored on the long drive, but ended up listening to AFP while ben watched movies on his iPod instead--Ben usually doesn't let me have productive phone conversations!...but I was thinking of you :)

    H'lo, all.

Hugs to Cabal, Firbday greetings to...Jess? Sorry, I"m trying to catch up quickly.

Just leaving this message to a) explain absence and b) ask favour.

Mom is ill. Incredibly ill. WAAAAYYY more ill than I realized or than she let on (lesson here: parents lie. Just like an eight year old with stolen cookies.)

Went to the ER; congestive heart failure, pneumonia, pleural effusion (partially collapsing one lung, or something like that. The XRay was mighty ugly) Blood oxygen: 70. No, really.
Sludgy blood (too much hemoglobin) High white blood cell count. Legs so swollen (plus swollen hard abdomen) that she bruises if you touch her. Oh, and liquid comes out of her legs.

Refused the airlift to Albuquerque hospital. Refused treatment (they did pump her full of steroids and put her on oxygen 24/7.) Docs say "well, if she wants to go home-legally she can refuse....we just don't think she will survive without treatment."

Fell the next morning. Back in ER.
Cracked pelvis. Refused airlift. Refused admission to hospital. Accepted prednisone, walker, lasix and massive antibiotics.

She was doing better this week. Incrementally.

Fell again early Monday morning...out of the chair she sleeps in.

Today...in and out of full lucidity. Lucid enough everytime I mention hospital or ER to refuse.

Forehead feels like a high temp.

    SO.

I'm awfully scared. Two tours in Iraq; never this scared. We are all we have (mom and I.) Niece is a thousand miles away.

PLEASE put my mother in your prayer circles/blessing ways/whatevers...

    Her name is Brenda.

  112. Oooh, moi, jealous much? :)

Couldn't tempt you into swinging by the small country slightly to the right of Oz mapwise as well? We have fun things like this
    It's a (Knitted)Tree! to marvel at.

I have to admit that I snuck a quick look at the calendar to see if I could manage a visit to Oz around the same time, but it was not to be. I mean, there'd be the bank robbing to organise and all. *sigh*

P.S. Big thanks to Sally for telling me how to insert a link.

  113. Well dang, Tracy. How much fun would that have been? We could have shown everyone that we ANZACs know how to party!

  114. Does anyone know of an email address to contact the Blogger team? I'm getting really tired of the repeated attempts to sign in, so I can leave comments. *kicks Blogger like a grumpy toddler*

  117. We will make it to NZ at some point too...it's on our list!
Hubby has to go to Sydney at least one time per year for work. We went with him 3 years ago and can finally go back again this year. It'll happen again.

I think we'll be able to catch Boss at the Opera House too! I hope at least. I think we'll be getting into Sydney on the 4th or 5th and he's there on the 7th. We'll see!

  118. Sorry I haven't been chatty, with our Housekeeper out for 2 weeks, Neil going to London (where I can now say he won the Carnegie medal!) and Cabal, there hasn't much time or inclination.

New Cabal post is UP tho...

  119. No Emily, I'm afraid not. It was a whirlwind trip: we drove from PA to CT on Wednesday, spent Thursday poking around southern New England, then drove home Friday. It was a lot of time in the car, but a very nice trip.

  120. My dog has had dual knee replacements and came out just time; do the recommended exercises afterwards (and keep up the health insurance - it saved me buckets of money on the dog. Her health insurance has at times been better than mine.) I hope Cabal's surgery/recover goes as well as hers did.

  124. This NFL Flag for Washington Redskins is constructed of polyester, measures 3x5 feet, and has two metal grommets for attaching to our 6' aluminum flagpoles or any of our tailgate pole systems. The perimeter of our NFL Flag for Washington Redskins is double stitched and the team logos are screen printed into the flag so they won't peel. Because of its large size, these flags are great to hang on any wall in your game room, sports room, garage.
