So Far In Ireland...

Hello from Dublin!

I've been thinking of all the things I want to tell you about, and everything that is so very cool and show you the pictures that I've taken...But if I try and remember all of these things, or download any pictures, you aren't going to get a blog post tonight.

So no pictures, and a mash of impressions and things from Dublin so far....

Cobblestones. I love them. Roads with Cobblestones are MUCH cooler than roads without. My mission in Dublin seems to be to trip over as many of them as I can. I have kind of embraced and accepted this, and am going for a serious high score. Did great today! Hit a lampost too once, but that's championship stuff and I can't do it every time. I hear when the Cobblestones get wet it makes it much more interesting. No rain so far to test this, but one can hope.

I had tea in a Crypt today. We didn't set out to do this, but the fact that it happened is just one more example of why Ireland is such a magic place. At any moment you could end up in a crypt with a nice cup of tea.

I love old churches. Very powerful places. I love the feeling of them, the history of them, and the magic of them. The look of them, with towers you can climb all the way to the top of and look out over Dublin, very beautiful. Very powerful places. I love it that they have crypts under them where you can get a nice cup of tea.

I got to have beans on toast for breakfast yesterday. Now I know I was pretty out of it, but I loved beans on toast. These ones anyway. And I love it that you can get real tea just anywhere. GOOD real tea. That comes with milk.

I went to a place called "Hell" for Pizza last night. Good pizza in Hell. Very spooky place it was. Which brings me to another thing, I have been loving how all of the shops, places to eat, anywhere you look, is all spooky here, bats, skulls, spiders, cobwebs, all of it. It seriously only dawned on me today that the Irish were not in fact just a generally Spooky people (Like myself) but rather, er, Halloween is coming. Go figure.

I love the people here. Haven't met any bad ones. Everyone is so very friendly, and nice to me. Except for the crossing the street bit. No one will hold my hand, they keep saying I can DO this on my own and I am NOT going to get squashed like a bug with cars coming from the wrong way and to grow up and just run when everyone else does and I will be fine.

One can hope.

Tomorrow, I think my Spirit Guide (Whose name is Annabell) is taking me to mummies, a graveyard, another church, more tea, more Things That Have Been Dug Up, and a Knitting Club (which I don't believe is a Euphemism, I think it's, you know, yarn and all. I get to learn to KNIT, which is cool) And more walking.

Over Cobblestones.

Which is cool, because I am sure that there are some I've missed.

I love it here.

Love and Ireland,
Lorraine

  2. You just listed everything I miss about living in Dublin. Now please, I beg of you, go to The Long Stone Pub and have a pint, and tell the Face in the back room that I miss him.

  6. Totally unrelated to anything, I bought a waterproof camera. Ben's having a blast with it.

It's no ireland, just a toothless, underwater goofball.

  7. Tea in a crypt. That is all sorts of awesomeness all by itself.

Sounds like it is just as well you are Fit now Medeadly, with all the running around and tripping. Who needs gym when you can have Dublin?

Chantrelle - that's one very cute toothless underwater monster!

  8. Re: churches. I just looked it up, & Christ Cathedral has it's bellringinging practice on a Friday evening - Its tempting to me to try to pop in for a quick tower grab before dinner - would you be interested in seeing some ringing at all ?
( would also no doubt be possible on Sunday, subject to your con. Committements)

  9. Haha, you get those cobblestones! And yeah, old church just rock so hard. The way they smell. But I am talking the New England churches I've visited, and I've been to so few and IRELAND, why, IRELAND must be so different in so many ways! Glad you're having such a marvelous time!

  11. Sounds like a great good time!

  12. Sounds like you are having a great holiday. Hope you don't get run over. And leave a few cobblestones for the other visitors!

I was laughing so hard at Marjorie and Jess, and the rest of you, I had to read it all to Revelle because she had to hear it. The kids here use "licking the windows" as shorthand for "special needs kids' behavior," which certainly adds another meaning. So I didn't even think about "locking" until I was reading it back to R.

  13. Sounds absolutely delightful! Can't wait for the pics!

  14. Watching the live footage of the first miner being brought to the surface in Chile. Such good news.

  15. You know, when I was a semi-professional folkdancer, we'd often have to tap dance on cobblestones when over in the Old Country. It was fabulous & I never got injured. Wishing you well! And drink more tea!

  16. Is anyone else watching the first miner come out? I'm sitting here by myself sobbing.

  17. Sally I watched it just as he was able to hug his family. So intense!

  18. Sounds like you are having a great time!
    I can't wait.
    Yay for Annabelle.

  19. I was in Dublin for work and didn't get to spend as much time touristing, but the bits I saw were wonderful.

I hope to go back someday.

If you like Spooky I'd suggest looking at going on the Ghost Bus Tour. It's done by Dublin Bus each evening and I'd recommend booking in advance. http://www.dublinsightseeing.ie/ghostBus.aspx

  21. Do not take this crossing the street in Ireland business casually. Remember what happened to Amanda in Belfast?

Then again, she sort of got me out of it. Maybe you will get someone nice who will take pity on you with your broken leg after the car hits you...

    ReplyDelete
  22. We'll gang up on cars, they'll never dare to come close. I worry more about rolling about with the Dublin roller girls...

  23. It sounds fantastic!!

  24. Ooo, tea in a crypt sounds spooky fantastic!

If you ever get the chance, you should check out Sedlec Ossuary:

    http://www.artgraphica.net/art-shop/prague-kutna-hora-bone-church.htm

Not in Ireland, I know, and no tea (that I know of), but sculptures made entirely of bone. It's on my list of places to visit if I ever make it across the ocean.

  25. Good point about the cars coming from the other sides, we are geared to look for the opposite.
The sheer excitement in your Tweets and blog has made me sit down and budget in a trip to Ireland. I have always wanted to go.
    How's the trousers?
    Enjoy!
    Signed, Anxiously awaiting photos,
    Holly Abbie

  26. It all sounds so fabulous Quiche!

Tea in a crypt? And your little bit on cobblestones is too funny.

Eagerly awaiting photos. Have a great time!

Have you seen the Rive Poddle? It's my new favorite river name. The Piddle in Dorset is my second favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anonymous13:05

    ...that would be "River."

    ReplyDelete
  30. Just the name "Piddle" on its own is awesome enough.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I've been thinking lately I need a synonym for "awesome". UrbanDictionary will help but I'm thinking "Fanfrikkintabulous".

Oh they have "badass". I mean that could work.

  32. I know you don't drink but you should do a tour of Guinness and maybe some whiskey breweries. They are fascinating and the lounge at the top of Guinness has a lovely view.

  33. If you ever come to my neck of the woods, we can have a tea party in the cemetery next to my apartment complex. I think I have the best tea, but I'm not sure it's up to your exacting standards.

Midterms coming up in two days!

    ReplyDelete
  34. *sigh* Sounds fabulous.

And funnily enough I had a Hell pizza last night too. :) They have an outlet just down the road from where I live.

I have packed! Tomorrow I shall be in Dublin!

  37. I can't remember what I said.

SOmething to Boss about not worrying about cars, tho he has a point about Amanda, but I am dodgeing with the best of them now, except I limp everywhere as my legs hurt SO FREAKING BADLY.

Apparently I had not got the lower half of my legs FIT and we walk everywhere, me and my spirit guide. (Who is determined I shall not miss a THING here)

Did get a leg massage in a pub tonight with some Mad Knitters, loved them. One of them is kidnapping me and taking me to the country in search of, Alpaca I believe, later this week, so I do get to see some of the bit outside Dublin.

Mega blogger! DJ Day Z! Ah, I recall the stories of your days as a semi proff folk dancer!

DOing better with the cobblestones., hardly any tripping worth mentioning today.

Meeting so many people and having such a fine time. I love it here. They want to keep me and kidnap threats are all over the place. I might not struggle too hard.

Fiends, I don't know when you get here, but meeting up Friday night in the bar at some point? I have a con dinner to go to first, but I think it is earlyish...

Be warned tho, the walls of this hotel MOVE, just when you think you know where you are going...

  38. Marjorie, we're going for music tomorrow night. Text my Irish cell 086 376 1502

(Stalkers and anyone not in IRELAND HERE don't call me, text me or even admit you ever SAW THIS NUMBER)

I have a plague rat now, and drink tea in crypts. Don't mess with me.

  39. Q, will do
(wonder if I can get anti plague shots before tomorrow..)

  40. Ah, yes...walking *everywhere*. I did that while pushing ben in a buggy when he was 2 1/2...brutal workout it was!

Glad you are having a good time (like there was any doubt you would!)

Stalkers beware, fiends will protect Q to the end....even across continents! Although, no doubt, she can hold her own ;-)

Just saw miner no 32 come up - fanfrickintabulous! (Too many letters in that word Em, I had to cut and paste)

    ReplyDelete
  46. fanfrickintabulous

    totally fanfrickintabulous

  47. Cracked my dad up by having ben call to sell him raffle tickets. Imagine in a 6 yr old's voice, "You could win a Prius or 25 million dollars."...um, ben, that's $25,000 dollars ;-)

Amazing about the chilean miners! Did you see the one wife is boycotting the rescue after meeting up w/ the mistress back at the initial accident time!

OK, back to making fish curry.

Had an overwhelming craving for curry after listening to Neverwhere all day!

  48. That book sort of turns me OFF food. It's so gross and disturbing in so many ways and the food parts are my least favorites, I think. (You know, YAY for gross disturbing fanfrickintabulousness but no lunch for me upon rereading "Neverwhere").

  50. As a hopeful toward knitting, I pray you enjoy yourself entirely and post some of your creations!

[On a technical level, I've learned twice, but we'll just say that it didn't sink in, eh?]
