Learning Some Things...

I wasn't going to post these, but they made me so happy, that I thought what the heck. The point is progress, and getting FIT and that's what's happening.

I had a Riding Lesson yesterday that's been sticking with me. Not sure if I can exactly explain, but it wasn't going well, and my teacher Poetry turned into HELGA the Destroyer, and threw me off the deep end into the pool. A little Trial by Fire. Never hurt anyone, I say, but it was pretty scary at the time.

My nerve failed. Then she showed me I could do a whole lot more than I thought I could.

I thought pretty much I was going to die, but trusted HELGA the Destroyer enough to do it anyway. And HELGA doesn't leave much room for discussion on these things. You do it. And live. I did.

We had spoken about doing Derby at the start of our lesson, she wants to skate, too. (She's be a hell of a jammer, little, and FAST) But my attitude was very much not at ALL confident, and I was thinking nice idea, but no way. I'm too old, too not FIT, not good enough.

Driving home, I wanted to call the Roller Girls here and tell them, I am so coming to practice.

My point, and I think I have one, is I am learning more about myself than I thought I had to learn. I thought, hey get FIT, eat right, work out, look good, easy. That part IS easy, comparatively.

Right now I need people like HELGA, and the Little Evil Trainer at the gym, and my Roller Girl friends, the ones who SEE, clearly, what I am capable of. And kick my Nice Ass until I DO it.

I want to feel that too, inside, and know.

Here's a couple of little Vids. I am wearing pretty much the same thing, and oddly, the SONG is the same song, but they are three weeks apart. The scale hasn't budged, but the camera doesn't lie. I'm getting fitter.

Here's the second one, taken on Sunday. Long way to go, but this girl with the Bad Ass Pink Hair, has possibilities the one three weeks ago didn't.

And it's not in her Nice Ass.

It's in her head.

Love and Learning,
Lorraine

  1. Crumbs. Blogger ate my comment.

    You look great.

And, I need to get better at pushing through that "You can't do that" song in my head, especially physically.

  2. And, that's an inspiring post, she says, having forgotten that piece of the eaten post...love it!

  3. Hooray!

The brain part is the hardest of any new activity, especially one where you have to push yourself. Good that you have people to help.

  5. Hey, all that new found confidence is working nicely to make your ass look fabulous too!

  6. You are looking fab! And I am so happy for you.

But I do have to say I am envious, I have several Roller Derby friends, and it is something I would have enjoyed at one point. But my body can't handle that stuff anymore, which is sad, 'cause I am still young! *le sigh* Well I will just have to get myself some roller blades soon and do some around the new neighborhood skating. :-)

  7. -and tick-

I'll come back when it isn't the middle of the night to read properly (picked P up from the airport at midnight, its now just after 2 am and I must go to bed)

  8. Good teachers are key on the get FIT path. They see what you don't see and push you over the hurdles.

My yoga teacher Suzanne is like that - I had to learn to trust that she knew both what I *could* and how to get me there without harming myself.

    Priceless.

  9. Now I am getting up the oomph to go OUT and get to work. Been working but need to go IN to work.

    Cold out.

    Dark.

    Grey.

Like it here, nice fire, nice kitties.

Ah well, the Birdchick is coming to do Things today with me, honey things, which will help hugely.

  10. I had exactly the same problem, Q, without the incentive of honey.

Made it to work, but not making much progress on today's urgent tasks. More coffee maybe?

I want to read, write, snuggle with the cat, work on art projects. I'm full of excellent art ideas but I need some blocks of uninterrupted time and those are remarkably scarce.

  11. you are looking amazing. it's fascinating how much can change in three weeks.

  12. I am glad you are getting FIT, but even more so, I am happy you are feeling as awesome as you are!

  13. Inspiring! And I love that you are sharing it all with us ;-)

  15. Hey lady, nice head! Seriously, love the new hair! :)

Yes, you kick ass with your nice ass and your right mind and your killer friends, trainers and teachers.

I have a cold. More tea please.

  16. yes! awesome!

i have a sorta "me too". two days ago i went to a yoga class with a very dear friend of mine. (new teacher to me, and i want in some measure to move there just so i can study with her.) she had us do handstands. i haven't done one in ages, was certain i couldn't, felt happy with as close as i had gotten in my first attempts. "i'm too weak, haven't practiced enough lately, etc." - you know the thoughts!

then the teacher came round and without saying so, conveyed to me that i was going to do it. she gave me the tiny bit i needed to get UP! and when i did, it felt great and perfect. and afterwards i wondered at great length why i can convince myself repeatedly that i can't do a thing, so have to surprise myself over and over that i can. :P

and i'm still a little achy from that class, but in a good way.

  17. a belated yet heartfelt happy firbday to you Natalie!

Jess - tell us all about the new class, yes! i do know. so, go you!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Jess, i so want to come down there and drag you kicking and screaming to yoga class!

not all classes will suggest handstands anyway. none of the ones i found yet here, for example (which, in fact, disappoints me). and remember, there is a modification for EVERY pose; you find your own challenge, and any teacher worth their salt will advise people to do something different as needed.

so GO, Jess, GO! go to yoga!

    ReplyDelete
  19. (was that more helpful?)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Frickin' handstands!?

This would be why I go to the Level 1 yoga classes! (when i go...haven't been in a couple of years..bad me)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, I'd be hopeless. I have never ever been able to do handstands, even with people trying to help me. I can do other flexible things some people find hard though, so I guess it balances out. (Heh, see what I did there?)
You look pretty fabulous skating there MeDeadly.

    ReplyDelete
  22. UR SO BADASS Yeah really. I mean you are ROCKIN' it. You look amazing. KEEP GOING!

  23. And that song works for so many things. Funny, I really don't like it until it's like ... APPLIED. Jack's ex was a huge fan and now Jack hates the song. :D Yeah, Jack is thirteen and has an Ex.

    ReplyDelete
  24. No handstands here, Fiends, not tonight. I have no arms. Sad really. Just noodley things.

Want nice bed now please bed yessss bath too.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I suggest the bath before bed. Usually works better that way. Less chance of drowning.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I haven't taken a bath in about eight years. Maybe nine.

    Ouch, that came out wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I haven't taken an enjoyable bath in MANY MANY years. BUT in about a week and a half I will have a new home that has a beautiful soaking tub and I will be in it!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I could handle a nice bubbly spa right now. My head feels disconnected, I am so not used to 3am bedtimes.

Actually, I could almost handle a head massage better.

Just popped by to say WOOHOO! This is a lovely post. It's wonderful to find out that you can do more than you think -- here's to constantly surprising yourself! *raises mug of coffee* ~Ali

  30. Na, I saw this after reading your handstand episode...

  31. GOOD MORNING!!!!!

Ah, looking at the agenda for today I see Helga the Destroyer is first up.

And here's me already sore. And those lessons have gotten BRUTAL.

Then taking the puppy to the U of MN for a checkup, he's still wobbly.

    Then some skating.

Almost I could like this day if it didn't involve say, going OUTSIDE.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Handstands are definitely one of those exhilarating poses - OMG look at what I can do! I'm not great at them, but they're possible.

Have you ever tried them in a doorway? Hands on floor, back against one side of the door frame, walk feet up the other side of the door and then over the to side where your back is.

    Fun...

Cecily - congrats on finding a new place to live!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Nat, that might be an eyeworm.

yes, it's good to be upside down sometimes.

agree about life being fiiine if i didn't have to go outside. i occasionally contemplate letting the monsters stay home from school for what my conscience tells me is a very bad reason. but errands beckon. things must be Accomplished. so i might as well take monsters to school, eh? *grumble*

    ReplyDelete
  34. Never had a handstand sprung on me in my yoga classess. Shoulder stands I can cope with. Me + handstand = crumpled heap.

I tend to stick with pilates these days, it seems to suit my body better.

Unexpected bum massage Jess? Lucky you!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh I forgot the ticky

    ReplyDelete
  36. HA! I completely zapped about today being a Wednesday and missed my yoga class (a problem when you start the working week on a Tuesday...).
No handstand or tree or whatever for me today.
I'd better not forget I have a massage scheduled for tomorrow. Possibly some butt massage included.

  37. You're a ROCK!!!

Just signed the lease for the new place. If anyone is interested there are pictures of it on here...

I'm going to have a bathroom large enough for more than one person to stand in!!! I have never had that! I am so excited. And it has a soaking tub!!!! Beyond the simple joy of that, it means that I will have a tool (meaning being able to soak in hot water) and get off this fucking medication that has been contributing to my weight. AND the owners are paying for the HOA fees which will give us access to a gym. FIT HERE I COME!!!

  38. Jess, you are a Rock - strong like an amazon

  46. Ah, Drinking Fiends. Good, good children...

    ReplyDelete
  47. No drinking here - I'm feeling a tiny bit under the weather, and have applied chicken soup and a cat, and will be going to bed early.

Right now I'm reading about Latin profanity... I mean working on my current writing project.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I Want to know Latin profanity!!!

Also, happy tweet from our fearless leader about Cabal. *YAY*

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yes! Cabal had a Great vet check today, he's doing wonderfully. Still Wobbly but it's the ACL not his spine.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You can always go with
"Nec sapit pueri instar bimuli tremula patris dormientis in ulna" which means "He hasn't got the brains of a sleeping two-year-old rocked in the crook of his father's arm", although, if you want snappy, "Merus stupor" (quintissential cretin) is pretty good.

I'd like to pretend to be able to curse in Latin, but I actually have a book which my parents got me one year for Christmas. I'm not quite sure what they were telling me!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Fiends are universally knowledgable!

  52. Jess = BFR

    The BIGGEST.

    ReplyDelete
  53. LOVE IT! I'm totally not going to remember it, but I do love it.

Can anyone tell me how to say, "I can eat glass, it does not harm me." in Latin? I have a great story to go with that one...

    ReplyDelete
  54. Mr Jess, I love that, being English, you link to the UK Amazon store and not the US one!

we have yet another serious thunderstorm rolling in here. Shiraz just tried to tell the thunder to p-off. It didn't work.
I guess I shouldn't be on the computer.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Quick stop.

Glad Cabal is doing ok. (Yay Pup!)

Jess...you are a rock, you are a rocking rock.

Cecily, congrats on the house...love the windows!

    Is everyone busy?

Or did America get invaded by zombies when I wasn't looking? (in which case, aim for the head)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'm a bit zombied, but it's only too many patients in a row doing it. Can't speak for anhyone else.

Are you snowed under? (By snow, not work?)
