Derby. I'm In.

I am home. And no longer a Derby Virgin. Nipped down to Indy this weekend to see Naptown bout the Chicago Outfit (yes, I can say things like this now) and went knowing I was going to love this, very excited to see my friends skate, and beyond anticipating how cool seeing live and up close was going to be.

I have to tell you honestly: It far exceeded my expectations.

To start, the girl about to unzip her shirt and photobomb me, I met earlier in a TJ Max while buying a purse, with another Derby Friend. Derby is like that. These things happen. You make friends fast. And hard. And truly. (Being no good with names, I can't name her. But she is my friend now)

I want to tell you everything, but there was far too much, and there aren't exactly words. The best I can say is that it's very like the first time I got Covered In Bees. You aren't the same person.

If you are lucky enough to attend a bout: Sit Suicide. This means you sit directly on the track, just out of bounds. I took this shot. Right there. No walls. No safe. You're there. Best place to be really.

I know a LOT more about Derby, it's rules and why what happens happens than I did. I want to know more.

Here's the first pic by amazing photographer Tom Klubins. I love him too and meant to adopt him as a brother and didin't formalize it, but we know. That's Joan of Dark warming up in a Lorraine a Malena Tee Shirt.

Derby relationships are like that. I now have a family there. It's fast, and it's hard. Much like Derby. I love every women on that team. Each of you. And will never forget the Afterparty, where you showed your love for me, all 20 of you. Thankyou, Joan of Dark, I will not forget that. Shady Lane my friend, you too, Amooze Boosche, and Cheerio who planned to make my evening perfect. And several others I will never forget.

(the bruises will fade and be assured, I will not be forgetting your birthdays)

Another photo by Tom Klubins here. These women can SKATE. It's like ballet, like poetry, like music. It's hard, fast and all consuming. It's giving everything and hitting hard. It's loving in the very most way I've ever seen in my entire life. It's passion and will taken: All. The. Way.

It's the coolest thing I have ever seen.

And yes. I most dangerous. I saw a skater go down, not in a general way, across the audience, from the stands, but 5 feet from me. She got hit, and not sure what happened, but she was down.

Saw her face.

Knew, and felt the bone break. Felt it happen to me. I was there, saw her face when it happened. Spent an entirnity, 5 seconds or so, experiencing that completely until the refs called it and every skater went down on a knee, stopping the bout.

Katya Lookin, met you earlier that day, thought we could be friends, know it now. You need anything, I've got your back.

But that is what Derby is tho. A whole lot of people, of family, that is THERE. Don't matter what. At least with this team, and the people I have met so far, that is what's going on. I may have been lucky, meeting the people I've met. But I know I'm lucky.

I've got Joan of Dark, Dill Hero, Jane Ire, Cheerio (Kerrie!) and everyone, all of you, I've met this weekend.

There are rules about after parties, and pictures, and telling stories, but I will stretch them now and leave you will this, and my Joan of Dark (whose fault this Derby and me thing is entirely)

Me: What was that shot you just did?

Her: Don't know. What's Patron?

Me: Oh dear...

Love, and love, Derby,
Quiche Medeadly

  1. Oh. Wow.

This sounds absolutely amazing - what a wonderful time you've had.

I really want to see a bout now, live. Experience the whole thing.

I just love the first photo of you, and the last one of Joan Of Dark - two cheeky, gorgeous gals.

  2. This sounds WILD. And dangerous in darkish yet funny ways.
Glad you had fun. Love that first picture of you.

  3. That Joan of Dark is hot. Think I might have to find some NOLA Roller Derby girls to groupify.

  4. Also, Sally sent me a koala in the mail!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Well, you DID ask for a koala.

YAY! ONE OF US! ONE OF US! ONE OF US! Yeah, that's derby! It is really insane how hooked you get without even thinking about it. When I started I read all these blogs and heard people say things about how derby changes your life, and I was like WHATEVER. I was wrong. They were right. Enjoy the high, it never goes away :)

  9. *grin*

It sounds like just the Derby Trip you needed and it rocks that it was more than you ever expected.

PatrĂ³n eh? I'd say fondly that I remember those days, but "remember" would be really stretching it.

  10. It's always a good feeling to find Tribe, and one can never have too many places to belong.

  17. I hope she gets better too. I was at her house that morning, she rocked.

What does one wear for Derby? REALLY cool clothes, that's what one wears. Fortunately, very like what I already wear. I can just be myself, which is what happens in family.

    I love this.

    Oh, dear.

  22. Oh this has been one long long day and it never did stop. It's stopping NOW. And my bruised ASS is going to workout.

    Then to the couch.

    Now you know my plans.

  23. This looks and sounds like such a blast!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Will catch up tomorrow..for now, ticky!

  25. I'm still confused about the Patron thing.

I met tigerinvaseline at the Dresden Dolls concert. She and I clearly had different definitions of "dangerous". I am a wimp. For me "didn't need EMTs" is *not* the baseline. But she was a wonderful person to meet. I'm glad you had such a great time and felt so at home.

I got to watch Quality Street, my favorite spinster flick, for the first time in a long time tonight! I have an impossible-to-replace VHS tape that I haven't wanted to trust to the aging VCR lately. But my friend found it on DVD. It features Katharine Hepburn, playing the very Phoebe for whom my cat is named.

  28. What I learned on the night before my bad-ass final:

If I accidentally turn on the wrong burner of my stove, I will start set my bamboo cutting board on fire and have to put it out and clean a big-ass mess.

But, the spaghetti will taste pretty darned good.

    ReplyDelete
  29. OMG Wendy, I did that once, except the board was a nylon/polyester or whatever the synthetic ones are made of...and it stunk the place out. Very embarrassing because my then flat mates sibling were there for a meal!

  30. Well hey good morning!

I made coffee but then opened my soy milk and it came out in curdled chunks as I'd left it in the car and it froze yesterday so I had to go in my jammies to the store for cream.

In the cold. Alone. But hey, you all have fun with your mornings.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Awww. So sad! Hope you are back home warm and snug. And with uncurdled cream.

Morning here has been full of "oh no you aren't doing that" moments. Plans, what plans?

  33. Hey, instant tofu! Not teeribly unseful in tea of coffee but add some spinach curry and it's a meal.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh nes. Poor frozen Quiche.

I hope you are back hoem, warm and fully Tea-ed (or Coffeeeed, as may be)

I seem to be achieveing very little today. I keep trying to reutn phonecalls, to people who turn out to be unavailable, and then this evening I have to go to the dentist :-(

  39. HELLO FIENDS! Where are you, my hungry children? I'm home now!!

And get this: I can do crunches with NO ONE HOLDING MY FEET!!!!

I feel so powerful like I could do ANYTHING!!!

I am going to crunch every day now like it was nothing!!!!!

I may stop while shopping and just drop for some crunches, just for the heck of it!!!!!!

There, that's my news. Wassup with you?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Making dinner. Indian food: cabbage and chicken.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Um...not crunches as yet.

    You am MIGHTY! RAWWRRR!

(if you do random "drop and give 'em ten", have someone taking video of reactions).

Chippewa Valley eh? Do they skate against Minnesota?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yay crunches! I used to have to 100 of those per jazz class, 80 of which were with my legs in the air. She was a task master but damned if she didn't get my flexibility HUGE.

As for me? I moving this weekend! Finally! Any fiends are of course welcome to help. :-) Though I know there aren't many of us in my immediate vicinity. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think I was sleeping. It was two in the morning.

But I am VERY impressed with your crunching. Go Quiche!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Well, as far as I am concerned, crunches is the dry food I give to the kitties. I told my wee beasties that you could do crunches and they are now worshiping you (so now I may have to produce some of my own...)

  45. Today I took two long walks then went goth dancing in a hidden New Orleans bar, where you have to wander behind another bar, look for a sign, then walk up two flights of stairs to get in.

    No fires tonight.

  46. Many thanks, dear Jane.

  47. Hurrah! Good news indeed.
