If a 'Real' writer is someone that devotes themselves to writing at the expense of the rest of their life, I'd be very surprised if they had anything interesting to write about anyway!

My lovely boyfriend has been writing a novel since I've known him (almost 5 years). He's always saying he wishes he could've got it done faster/ devote more time to it. And I'm always pointing out that it's such an achievement that he's doing it at all; how fast or how much time he is spending writing per week is irrelevant.

He has a full time job as an engineer, teaches or practises aikido at least 3 nights a week, plus has all those other things that life throws at everyone.

I'm reading the novel now and I'm so proud of him. His life experience shines through his words, I find myself reading between the lines and thinking "I know what/who that's really about". He's written something; he's a writer. Same goes for everyone having a go at creating art, it's 'real' because of the experience and individuality we can put into it.Helliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13963039473362523288noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7341973562786153133.post-44438935823077460022010-03-18T14:55:26.993-05:002010-03-18T14:55:26.993-05:00Applauding Phiala and Jess for great posts!!!!

In the last 3 years I've racked up a nice number of...professional publications. None of the stuff that I "want" to do. But you have to keep the boat afloat and money does help with that...

You keep at it and I will too.

Here is my not-very-shameful confession - there are times when I could write and choose not to, because I choose another sanity-supporting activity instead (like sleep, exercise, cooking veggies, spending time with friends). For me, that's just what I have to do.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10207346299129996890noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7341973562786153133.post-39783251053753326302010-03-18T13:56:52.182-05:002010-03-18T13:56:52.182-05:00I'm reminded of Virginia Woolf, here: A woman...I'm reminded of Virginia Woolf, here: A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction. Applies to any writer, really. I'm very fortunate to be one of those writers for whom money is not an issue. I can devote all my time to my work. But it's a very unusual situation to be in.

The vast majority of writers out there have to hold down jobs. Every writer I've ever known personally has worked at a university in some capacity, and all of them have complained how difficult their jobs make it to find time to write the things they wish to write. The sort of writing life which affords endless stretches of time to devote to art are generally the province of either the very well off, or fantasists who think that's how it ought to go if you're "serious". It doesn't work like that. I've had a good ten years to learn it the hard way. That's not how it goes.Jesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03251196964275450121noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7341973562786153133.post-77355585069380641932010-03-18T13:51:43.298-05:002010-03-18T13:51:43.298-05:00Phi...

That assumes there are only one or two things that are important in one's life. Your schedule would put me in a padded room. I'm already at the end of my rope with what I have on my plate (mixed metaphors much?). And you are amazingly accomplished at so many things. I'm debating whether it would help or hurt to do a complete blog post, and I want to rant in the meantime.

You know what? I get it. I understand that if I want to be a fiction writer and get things published I have to write them, and revise them, and finish them. You all offer good advice, generally along the lines of "I know it's hard, but if you want to write you'll have to cut back on television and gaming," paired with "If it's important you will make time."

I get it. I haven't made the time, so I'm not a real writer. If I were, I'd be obsessed like you all. If writing fiction is not at the top of my list at all times and in all places then I'm not devoted enough, and not a real writer. I can always manage my time better.

But you know what else? I gave up tv and gaming years ago. I think I've been to two movies in the past year. I don't clean the house. I don't cook. I don't even walk the dog. (He gets walked, don't worry.) I cut way back on my main hobby.

I work full-time-plus at a demanding job. I single-handedly run a small business. I write non-fiction for the web, for magazines, for books. I exercise, and I eat, and I sleep. I write fiction when there is time and brainpower. I constantly look for things I can cut out, ways I can squeeze more productive minutes out of a day that stubbornly remains 24 hours long.

I am not a singular being, nor am I defined by one action. And apparently, I am not a writer.Phialahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05604909119508288912noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7341973562786153133.post-50676977428478313492010-03-18T11:54:08.175-05:002010-03-18T11:54:08.175-05:00Not a Festival of Pee!
