Just An Idea....

This is going to be a very tired post. We've upped Cabels walks and between that, and the riding and the WII'ing with Maddy, I am getting a pretty good picture on just exactly how out of shape I am.

Not a great picture. Fortunately, one that can change rather quickly, as I intend to keep walking the dog, riding my horsie and WIIing with Maddy.

Hurrah for fit.

I have been eating right too. Mostly.

It's too early to say for sure, but I may be onto the single greatest discovery in the history of dieting and losing weight. I know, I know you say there IS no easy answer, and the entire weight loss industry is based on that, but it seems to me, with the country in the state it is in, if I can help at all, I will.

Now, I am not a poor women, but neither am I a rich one, so I am going to be getting my own infomercial, and selling this New Plan to the world, backed by all sorts of experts and charts and everything else one needs to make an easy million, but for 24 hours, I will tell you now, for free.

(and if you call within the next 20 minutes, I will throw in, absolutely free, a second all new patented Fabulous Lorraine's weight loss system!!!!!!!)

Here you go:

Eat the healthy stuff and get off your butt.

Ah, I hear the skeptics now, "If it were THAT easy, everyone would be doing it!"

I just saying, it could work.

I'll make millions.

(Keep it to yourselves for now, I need the millions)

Love and Fit,
Lorraine

Wii Fit is kicking my ass, but I think a lot of that is I've been unable to move much for around 6 years, thanks to out of control asthma that kicked in after a bad bout of bronchitis. Although I screwed up my arthritic knee doing a yoga pose today.

Just gives me more reasons to use my cool new canes!

And, as a follower of HAES and Fat Acceptance, I will point out that eating stuff that's good for you does not equal eating fewer calories. That just ends up making you fatter, as my ass can attest to. Don't make your body think it's starving, it will screw with your metabolism when you do that over and over and over.

Can someone help me down off this soapbox? I need more practice with the Wii Fit balance games :-D

i'm a lazy ass bastard and i want a personal chef who shops, prepares & cleans up all the good stuff and ONLY the good stuff. I'm too ADD in grocery stores & somewhere lost my resolution that dinners did not ALWAYS have desserts after them. And then snacks a couple hours after that.

Here's my budget plan for President Obama to consider. Foods should cost per calorie. That would fix it. At first; everyone still addicted to french fries would be refueling the economy (as it were) while they could; then; when they can no longer get bank loans for their fries; they'll be eating cheaper foods like carrot sticks which is better for them and we can ship the fries out to other places at a premium. Like how we buy our oil now...

I think it's a stellar plan...

At 22:28 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Hee-hee.....Yes, butter needs a really seriously high tax. I don't understand it in moderation, I know I have a problem, pasta and popcorn are only mediums to get the butter...

I'll stop.

Data, I think it's more, for me anyway, just eating right. I'm not starving, or even counting calories. Just making better choices, and stopping being lazy and getting off my butt.

I know it is harder, if you have things that limit what you can do, and I respect that, and am sorry that is very hard, but for most people, they could be fit, it's a matter of simply doing it.

I feel better when I am fit. That's all.

Oh, Kitty has a really cool blog , with lots of pics, about her movie up at :

i do not like to cook, not really, not inventively, i am unfortunately ok with fastfood (ok, i love wendys wraps - there, i said it!) and convenience frozen stuff and salads (however when I revert to Mom, i cook like a fiend, nothing like an appreciative audience :). so, i would also like a chef like stacy's. then i would eat a Healthy Amount, variety, color, etc.etc. ahhh dreams! DG, i haven't done the yoga on wii fit, but adore the balance games, and hula hoop. which i suck at it. stupid hoops will not let me catch them. i

I stopped to read first. :) Verra good, Q, verra good, and well put.

Secret's safe with us. When you get to doing infomercials you should take out ads on fb - I'm sure they only publish ones that are on the up and up!

DG - did you get the purple cane, too?

Stacy - your plan is brilliant. And the current pricing system seems to be calculated based on the opposite concept.

At 22:37 Blogger Stacy Hurt said...

yes Q; butter in our house too should have a luxury tax. And ranch dressing. I mean really; the only reason we eat carrot sticks & chicken strips & zuccini strips & sometimes salad is to get the ranch dressing.

Am I the only one in the western world without a Wii?

Um, a question for knowledgeable Fiends. Could feeling really nauseous and having the runs a day after getting all that anesthetic at the dentist be a reaction to said anesthetic?

I don't need a Wii today, sprinting to the loo is enough☤

At 22:37 Blogger Jane said...

My DH feeds me; I would weight less if he didn't, but as for losing weight while still not feeling deprived - Weight Watchers actually works great. I found myself excercisng so I could eat more, and eating foods that were better for me, also to eat more.

Realizing that a Krispy Kreme plain doughnut was 25% percent of my food allotment for an entire day was enough to stop me from eating them.

Of course I am an accountant and am a nerd about numbers, and WW is all about couting points - guess it was a good fit.

And it worked.

I need to sit on my hands when shape and food are being discussed, I agree that moving does a lot for making anyone feel good, those lovely endorphins rock. And fitness is fabulous at any size.

I was sympathizing with your feeling out-of-shape and the Wii, walks, etc kicking your butt. I suck at not making it all about me sometimes, and I'm sorry if I came across as "oh, yeah, well *I* can top that!"

The scary thing, when it comes to groceries, is that these days processed food is a lot cheaper than fresh, especially produce. It makes no sense.

Food and weight are part of the political climate for me, because it's also related to class, so I'm going to politely bow out of this part of the conversation.

I try not to discuss religion, politics, or the Great Pumpkin ;-)

At 22:40 Blogger Stacy Hurt said...

Sal; we are wii-less as well. And no excersizing for you until you are well m'dear!

Jane; my friend is doing the WW thing too; I think we should; we figured the cost & it's really less expensive than what we're doing now certainly. AND the foods all prepared; we only have to nuke it! I must remember this at the grocery next time... Fods give me strength!

Fast food is the BEST, I love cooking for other people, but for me? Nope. Wendy's, pizza, anything anyone will bring me.

Therein lies the problem.

For me pizza on the couch with TV is the BEST.

I am only speaking for myself here, it's just my own personal thing that needs to change in my life, for me to get what I want and feel the way I want to feel.

I love this whole riding thing and I can't do it right unless I get fit, won't happen, I don't have the muscles for it, and I weigh too much. I will get hurt doing it if I don't get the muscles for it.

It's really just that simple. It's something I want. I'm going to get it.

Q; when you talked about feeling beautiful inside while riding; that will certainly go a long way in keeping you riding which is good!

I feel that way when I'm on my treadmill; I LOVE to walk and walk fast! I dropped 40 lbs over a couple years several years ago doing just that... And it was because it made me feel beautiful to walk; I could picture myself thin & lean & fit! Sadly, that has escaped me and the retarded thing is I still love to walk; when I get on my tread I can be on there for an hour or more just lost in headspace... but I don't... *sigh*

I want to try yoga. I was hoping for a dvd for beginners. Anyone have any suggestions on that? My daughter wants too also but we can't afford classes.

At 22:46 Blogger Jane said...

L - that's it, when something gets in the way of what you want, it can be overcome. If you need to be fit to ride, getting fit becomes a means to an end and maybe easier.

Well, IMHO, anyway.

I don't know, Ms. Fabulous. The only other surefire way I've found for losing weight is to get pregnant. I lost weight with all four of my pregnancies. I've kept it off, for the most part, too. Not that I'm likely to get pregnant again. ;)

It is just that, it feels good and beautiful when you are doing something that makes you feel that way.

However and what ever you do, doesn't matter. I forget so often how much I love walking, with my Ipod. It's like this great place where there is no stress, nothing to do but dream and listen to music.

Then life starts up, and you get behind and the days are long, and it gets too easy just to grab fast food on the way from work to the gig, and the next day you are so tired, and it sort of snow balls...

I'm not talking, obviously, about any stupid "Ideal" of beauty or what one should look like or weigh, just about feeling good, and getting to do what you want to do.

Jane, you are right, its in the way, and can be overcome.

At 23:00 Blogger Jane said...

Stacy - it's also in DVD format, too, if you prefer.

Goodnight all.

At 23:01 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Adriandalen, thank you for the idea. I don't believe it LIKELY to happen to me tho....

And I have no intention of stressing about this, it's not some sort of mad sprint, it's not some kind of Must Lose Weight thing, it's well, I'm going to ride, and walk and yoga (love that too) and WII and get a Subway instead of a Big Mac, water instead of soda.

And I truly did not mean to offend, or to make anyone nervous, I should stress this is about ME and what I need in my life right now.

At 23:09 Blogger Chantrelle said...

I forget that there are people who don't like to cook! :P Luckily fast food goes against my Slow Food beliefs so that's my religion--food, and it keeps me relatively healthy.
Now, getting off my butt is a different story, i'm not good at that at all!!

Yoga - -I loved TriYoga when i was preggers with ben. I have a hard time with it now because of my wrists but their site has DVDs

Bathtub is full...gotta go! :)

I put on a lot of weight after my second daughter was born. I managed to carry it around for awhile and fuelled it with Bakers Delight goodies, cheese and chocolate.

After a few embarrassing incidents, I went to Weight Watchers as well.

Aussie WW encourage you to be active, and have an emphasis on fresh food and preparation thereof.

After awhile, I began to feel really great and it became more about being healthy into old age than about how I looked, or how I could walk into a shop and buy somethig off the rack. (Although I really liked that bit as well).

Sometimes I slide off the wagon and guzzle cheese and chocolate (and the odd good Aussie shiraz), but if I keep running at least 4 times a week, it doesn't matter so much.

I'm lucky where I live. There are very few days where you can't actually get out and exercise. If I did I'm not sure how I'd go, because I don't really like gyms or treadmills. Swimming is good and yoga is fantastic.

There are many things you can do to make yourself feel better and eating fresh food is one of them. Although, as I think DG mentioned it is pretty expensive.

My mum lives in a retirement village, and they do some exercise for older people there, including chair exercises. The girls and I went once and I was surprised to find I worked up quite a sweat by just sitting doing exercises in the chair. And I felt it in the muscles the next day.

So happy, healthy eating and exercise.

At 23:10 Blogger Na said...

Stacy, I love yoga! It keeps my joints from getting creaky. And I find it develops my lungs, even if I'm not practicing an asana style that's aerobic: I find now I can walk further or even run some (read: chase monsters) a lot more easily than a few years ago.

If you and El can go to a class just once in a while, it's helpful, good to get another perspective compared to doing DVDs or on your own. I've also read of a new growing trend in online classes, if you have a room where you can do yoga and have the computer on to listen to or glance at. I think they're cheaper than a typical studio class.

Sally, we have no Wii in our house.

I suppose I should add that I ate better when I was pregnant, shouldn't I? I also had to plan out my meals two to three days ahead with DD1 and DD2 due to gestational diabetes with DD1 and not wanting to develop gestational diabetes with DD2. Need to get back to that. :)

At 23:19 Blogger ariandalen said...

Planning meals two and three days ahead is what I should be doing, not getting back to diabetes.

At 23:27 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Glad you clarified that Ariandalen :) It's scary when you develop that stuff while pregnant.

We have a Wii, but not Wii fit, although I have heard such good things about it I might put it on my Christmas list. I just like the idea that the kids have to actually move while playing a game in front of a screen.

And Na, you're right about yoga classes, especially with a good instructor. Sometimes I thought I was doing the correct pose and I was so far off the mark it was ridiculous. Maybe 3 classes to start off with. However, a DVD beats nothing.

DataGoddess said, "I need to sit on my hands when shape and food are being discussed" and I'm with her. I'm a HAES and Fat Acceptance person myself, and I have to say that when I read the entire weight-loss industry was based on there being 'no easy answer' my first response was 'I thought the whole weight loss industry was based on making us feel bad about ourselves for fun and profit'?

I totally sympathize with wanting to be more active, stronger, more flexible, etc, to keep doing the things you want to do, though! I am way behind on my weight training-- probably because I know there's no way I can od it consistently for two months right now with my upcoming travel schedule, and even if I could, there's no way I could get the reward (horseback riding) due to the same!

Oh well. Will try to get back on Wii Fit for flexibility this week, and we can all compare scores. :D

standing carefully beside soapbox

I feel quite strongly about eating habits. Michael Pollan is IMHO the most intelligent voice on sensible eating currently. Three quotes from him that I like:

"Now that I know how supermarket meat is made, I regard eating it as a somewhat risky proposition."

"Don't eat anything your grandmother wouldn't recognize as food."

"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."

I would urge anyone looking at the cost of food to see the big picture and not just the bill at the checkout. And if possible, to walk to your local bookshop with the info gleaned off amazon.

No Wii either, I like to walk/run around the neighbourhood, helps me keep my sense of community.

moves away from soapbox

Sal, hope you're feeling better.

Vampi, I want one of those signs!

Ladyhawke! Haven't watched that in ages, now I know what I'm doing tonight, thanks Fiends!

At 06:25 Blogger Phiala said...

Michael Pollan is good.

There are all sorts of issues good and bad with the modern food production and consumption systems. None of them are easy or simple to understand, and none of the negatives are easy and simple to fix, either on the personal or the global scales.

Unfortunately.

I definitely gained some weight last week during my time of Twelve Hour Trials. Lori asked how it happened and I said I didn't know, that I stopped eating the bacon after the first morning and stopped eating the yummy waffles with syrup after the second morning. And then I remembered, well, I did have a slice of pie every day after lunch. And then I said, well, I was basically sitting in a room cramming for twelve hours a day. And then I remembered that they brought us morning snack and afternoon snack, which were usually pastries...

It's amazing how all that stuff can just sneak up on you.

At 06:27 Blogger Stardustgirl said...

I'm late to the Fiend-y party. If you've ever had the nightmare of something breaking *under* your house you can probably imagine the chaos involved.

Much belated b-day wishes, Lorraine. I can see I'm going to have to read all the old posts to catch up, but it sounds like you've got a sensible fitness thing going on. I have a friend who did something similar and he lost 50ish pounds in 6 months just from eating better and getting off his butt.

I don't have a Wii either, so don't feel left out, Sally.

I do have a new phone now - yay! My old one was going on 7 years old.

I love walking. I can't wait for better weather so I can do it outside again. I'm hearing lots of birds singing so spring can't be too far away.

At 06:59 Blogger dabbler said...

Good morning!

Love the post...late night TV at it's finest.

My biggest regret over having given up eating wheat last October is how hard it is to find things to put butter on!

I promised my kids a Wii for Christmas three years ago, and still haven't gotten one. First year they were too scarce, then I got less and less willing to pend the $ that way. And the question of who gets custody (the one at college or the one at home) became more complex. I love the idea of Wii fit, but suspect my consistency would be lousy. Walking outside works best...when my knee doesn't hurt.

We are in the midst of plague here...12 out of 20some of DD's class have been out of school this week. Including her. DH has had it to, and I am wearinga necklace of garlic...no, wait. That's not for flu.

Winter here is hard to be fit and active as i tend to enter hibernating mode and park it on the couch (with bbq chicken pizza, or my very favorite: french fries. yum. lots of grease and salt (and muffins with butter? or rather butter with muffins- ahhh addiction). Dance classes force me to be more active tho-as i hate being embarrassed by not knowing the steps so i practice a couple times a week. i would love to try yoga, and have thought about a dvd, as there is nowhere close which offers classes. i need to add more weight training as osteoporosis is rampant in my family- my finnish legacy. This is a great website for fitness videos/dvds as they have a rating system (sorry, in a hurry as need to leave for class, so can't look up how to do a hyperlink) www. collagevideo.com . they have everything, from aerobics to weight training to yoga, and rate from beginner to advance. I've gotten a few from there for myself and my kids, and we have been pleased with them. have a great wednesday all - its midterms and after today: 1 and 1/2 week off ! Whoot!

I was going to add to the discussion of food and etc. but my brain is going to sleep. Suspect that tryign to eat a balanced diet and get even moderate amount of excercise is much healthier (in all senses) than "dieting" - also suspect that 'Normal' i a much wider range than blunt instrucments like BMI might suggest. Weight alone is not a good indicator - I know wehn I first started working my weiht stayed almost exactly the same as before - may even have lost a little, but I was mush less healthy as I went from walking / cycling 5 - 10 miles a day, swimming and eating healthily to driving everyweher and eating a lot less well, becasue I suddenly had less time and was eating take outs a lot. Changed from muscle to fat.

(still trying to get some of it back to muscle - thik diet is reasonably healthy now, just not balanced with enough moving...)

[lecture-mode subject="Mardi Gras"]

Carnival is a traditional European Catholic season that runs from Twelfth Night (Jan 6) to Fat Tuesday. Some famous Carnival celebrations include Venice, Rio de Janeiro, and New Orleans. "Mardi Gras" is French for Fat Tuesday, the last day of Carnival, where you have to eat all of the meat, eggs, and milk up before the fasting of Lent begins.

It can also refer to the entire Carnival season in New Orleans, which has parties, parades, feasts, street dances, elaborate costuming, and ample tourism opportunities.

The real beauty of Carnival, imo, is the catharsis inherent in getting to wear a mask and be outside of yourself while the rules of normal society are suspended all around you.

I liked those pictures you put up on Flickr, Adri. Those were cool. :)

I'd just like to Tell the Internet that I'm probably going to die from lead poisoning, because my dad's been scraping paint off a windowsill in the guest room. He says the fine dust hanging in the air is just shellac and sawdust. The paint came off in big flakes, he says. No lead dust in the air, he says. It's fine.

Is anyone wearing a mask? No. Did he cover the furniture first? No. Did he shut off the furnace fan? Of course not. Why on earth would he bother to stop the air blowing around?

He does this kind of thing all the time. I says to him, Norm Abram says you should Practice Shop Safety, and he just laughs.

So when I'm dead: lead poisoning. 'Kay? 'Kay.

At 12:58 Blogger Phiala said...

Oh don't worry Jess. Lead poisoning is unlikely to kill you. It will just make you stupid and crazy.

Gee, Adri, I think that translates to, "Gee, your company and proposal are great, but we know someone at the other place." That's always irritating; however, they will remember you for having shown up in person, so it wasn't a total waste of time. Chances are, there will be a next time, and there you will be.

Still, cold consolation in the now.

At 17:54 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

AAAAAAARRRRGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I HAD TO POST IT WAS SPRING HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I cut and paste:

"... Winter Storm Warning in effect from 9 am Thursday to midnight
CST Thursday night...

The National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen has issued
a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow... which is in effect from 9
am Thursday to midnight CST Thursday night. The Winter Storm Watch
is no longer in effect.

Expect snow to develop by late Thursday morning The snow could become heavy at times especially around noon and into the mid afternoon. The snow will continue into the
evening hours... tapering to flurries or ending by late evening.
Accumulations could reach 6 inches or more by Thursday night. In
addition... increasing north to northwest winds will cause some
blowing and drifting snow especially Thursday afternoon and
evening.

There also remains a possibility of a mixture of freezing rain

Mwahahah.

My family tried not to give it to me. Guess I should have moved to a different bad. I had terrible pneumonia ten years ago and was sick for nearly two months. When I feel this way, I get really scared. So, healing thoughts, please...

Oh, right, hadn't thought of it that way. I am kind of first.

There is a new one coming tonight, but I am still yet at work with Mr Armageddon, wrapping up, and then home as oh yes, can you say..

Top Chef Finale tonight??????????

I'll so be there. Stefan must do down, and I don't mean that in a good way.

Doesn't anyone care about my blizzard????

At 19:10 Blogger Chantrelle said...

I feel for you and your blizzard. You're welcome to come out here to escape it...hubby's still in Oz, i have no one but ben to cook for!

And YES TOP CHEF!! I can't watch until after ben goes to bed so don't spoil it for me!

At 19:12 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Quiche, can I swap you one blizzard with one heatwave day?

At 19:16 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Chantrelle, let me put you out of the suspense.

I win it. Hands down. I am sure of it. My Chicken sausage and veggi wok dish tonight is to die for.

Sure I will swap Sally, I'm wistful, Fod give and takes, it was so lovely today...

At 19:18 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Snap Sally. I was just looking up tomorrow's temp.

Heatwave - blizzard, (weighing up in hands)

Sorry, but I'll take 1 heatwave to go!

Hope you're feeling better Sally.

At 19:37 Blogger Jess said...

Yays to baseball and chicken sausage wok dishes. Boo to blizzards.
I won't say anything about how it's supposed to be 54 here tomorrow. Instead I'll say it's going to rain overnight.

It's going to rain overnight.

Is it still Armageddon? I'm way late to that party. I miss everything. :(

At 19:38 Blogger Siri said...

I'm sorry for your blizzard, Q, but please and thank you keep it up there - I have morning commute plans, and don't need the precipitation. Our guys say you are getting all of it.

At 19:48 Blogger Siri said...

Oh, and Happy Ash Wednesday.

And it always irked the bloody blue blazes out of me that the doctor was right that correct food and exercise is the best fitness plan. I want it to be doughnuts and reading.

At 20:14 Blogger EmilyLady said...

Sorry for catching up so late! I haven't had such a busy day for a loooong time (which is saying something).

Moving feels good. It can be hard to make yourself GO but moving feels so good. I woke myself up this morning with a round of handstands and it was a great start to the day. Then I had breakfast and walked. Walking felt great. Then I carried around a screaming baby for two hours. This did not feel so great, but hey, it's moving. I guess.

At 20:21 Blogger Bulfinch's Aglaia said...

Stealing a quote from Vince Vaugh, I am thin yet flabby. :-) I walk and stand a great deal during the day and don't each terribly much during the day (too much at night, though) and have some religious seasons that help me not pork up too much. But I am NOT in healthy cardiovascular shape. Not at present. And that is when I feel best, regardless of size.

Q, I too wake up often during the night, desparately looking at the clock in a panic, worried about everything. We need to stop this, dear Quiche. We must. We need our sleep, yes?

Sal, I do not have a Wii. It costs money, and I don't have much of that right at the moment.

Sort of sad and tired tonight. The tired is related to schedule. Not sure why the sad...

At 20:38 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Don't be sad Grace! Or do, sometimes you need to be, but we are here, and there is a new post coming!

I am home now!

Magic now comes to the door , of his room, and MEWS and greets me, and he doesn't run and hide if I go around the room. The Bengals are happy tonight! They know it is the Top Chef Finale!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hosea. Or Carla. PLEASE!

At 20:41 Blogger Chantrelle said...

we're cheering for the same folks! I get the show 2 hours later though :(

Glad your home and magic is being magical!

At 20:45 Blogger AletaMay said...

No Wii here. I have Wii envy.

So true Q -- weather today was lovely and tomorrow it will suck. But this too will pass.

Fiends who are feeling unwell or sad are in my thoughts.

At 20:58 Blogger El said...

I missed the armegeddon? I was looking forward to it! :(

Oh well, I guess I'll have to carry on reading about everyone's motivation and postitive attitude toward excercise while I, um. Eat cookies.

(It's not all bad! I jump rope and do yoga every day, I swear!)

Any fiends have advice about herb gardens? I'll be starting my first one soon and I want it to live.

At 21:07 Blogger Chantrelle said...

Well, i have a tremendously happy marjoram plant. It can be used in a ton of ways and dries well too.
Not too much water, most herbs are pretty hearty.

My parsley was starting to do a little better (it was sad there for a while) and it has vanished...poof. No gopher hole (we put gopher wire in the beds anyway) and it's gone. Something stole it...i'm guessing it was whatever was living in my voice-software and typing him him him because that seems to be fixed.

At 21:15 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Watching Top Chef, oh my Fod! I can't believe Hosea...

Just kidding Chantrelle, I'll be nice.

New Post is Up!

Hey Mz. FabLo,
Your secret is pretty much what I did. Got off my butt, set some goals, had fun, and eat healthy. I think of it like my balancing my checkbook. I have so many dollars/calories a day to spend and I can spend them anyway I choose. I can spend more if I exercise more. voila.
Good to see ya girl!
