Well, Gig kind of WAS, and We Didn't Get Paid...

Well, pretty darn tired, but think I ought to write a post anyway...

Yes, gig tonight. At a Country Club Golf Course. Had no idea. Painful, to say the least. Tho, had we got PAID, would have been really nice. I had a fine time with Paul, but have never had such a complete lack of response in an audience.

Thought it was a private party, but was a Night with Irish Food and Music. 40 or so people at various tables. My Fav? The women who asked me during break where the bathrooms was (she had already asked the music be turned down, we were on one main lowest level) I said well might be down there and she responded, "oh I thought you were a member"

She had completely missed the point that I was the ONLY purple haired women in the room ON STAGE playing music.

We were SO the help. Had to laugh tho as we left, EVERYONE told us how much they loved us??? Go figure...And of course, no one had money for us, despite many e-mail on the subject....I so underbid this gig. (half the time, double the price) will not do so again. My displeasure in the Mailing of checks was made known.

Heard that Boss Twittered and is going to be on the Colbert Report, that is so cool I had no idea!

Ok, so I did, I set it up.

But for future protocol and reference, judging from my Twitter replies and my inbox, we do not mention things, rumors or fact, that Boss has not mentioned himself, publicly, yes?

I do know you are the most cool of Fiends and are the most discreet of persons.

And I thank you.

Love and Not Paid,
Lorraine

Q!! so sorry you had to deal with country club horror! Hopefully 'the check is int he mail' isnt a brush off! You deserve extra cash for deailing wiht a country club crowd.

I went to the best party tonight: Pastries & Pasties. It was CUPCAKES and BURLESQUE SHOWS! that's right! Cupcakes and people (there were men and women) who eat cupcakes dancing on stage!

Sending you virtual cupcakes and tasseled pasties instead of dead country club crowds!

Cor. First first! I'm sober now and have a tiny headache so I'm off to bed. That damn microwave is cramped.

Here's to getting paid! I'm thinking positive so I can stay out of the appliances.

I have also worked horrifying music gigs at country clubs (opera singer). Last Valentine's day (2008) I was booked for this country club and the woman seemed flakey from the get go, I KNEW something was off. It kept getting closer and closer to the gig and she suddenly became impossible to get ahold of. Then on February 13th, once I and my pianist and my other singer had turned down several other gigs, she called me and told me that she had found someone else (cheaper apparently) and could she get some if not all of the deposit back? A big hell no was my reply, though much more nicely.
I have so many other horror stories. I get to perform for some of the most snotty uptight people on the face of this planet. I should stop now before I go crazy and rant further.

Huge, major suckiness and I curse the uppity bastard treasurer who doesn't seem to be able to do his/her job properly.

Poor Fluffy, we seem to be shoving you in the microwave on a regular basis :)

At 00:37 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Fluffy says it all...the nerve! (And she deserves to stay out of the microblaster) I fart in their general direction, on behalf of you and Paul.
And Sarah -that's just downright rude and disgusting. Do these people have any manners or business sense?

At 00:42 Blogger Ticia said...

Lorraine, I'm sorry your gig was dead. And it's not okay that they didn't pay you, you're right.

I hope you're enjoying some kitty loving on the floor.

I think that June is going to rock the world off it's axis. You'll be surrounded by people that love you and your music. The only death that will be there will be invited by us. Skulls and vampires!

Sarah, Hello! And that sounds like the gig from hell.
Probably a good thing it didn't happen.

Hi my little Australian rain goddesses!

I took so long to write this!

At 00:47 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Rain Goddesses indeed....wet stuff just keeps falling, after little breaks. So wet.

At 00:51 Blogger Stacy Hurt said...

It's absolutely astounding that there is a serious lack of professionalism on behalf of those twisted, uptight, champagne swilling prigs!

The arts (and by extension artists) simply aren't recognized as valuable unless they somehow manage to enhance the ego of the filthy money laundering worthless bags of human flesh.

Stuff them all in the microwave and put it on low power; the better to see their knee caps explode!

I'd better stop before I piss my own self off too much.

Love to you and hugs and kitties and comfy floor coverings.

At 00:55 Blogger vampi said...

ooh, i'm so glad vmpires are invited in june :)

flaky people not paying is way not cool.

ooh st pats is soon:) i can't wait to hear some more good music :)

At 00:59 Blogger Madeline Carol Matz said...

Sorry to hear the night was such a bummer! Perhaps, request payment before performing for private gigs. I know a Chicago lighting designer that holds the file for a show hostage until he has his check. I have personally seen the check passing into his hands mere hours before a show opening in a union house. Invoice them and get your pay. Artists need to not let themselves be taken advantage of.

At 01:03 Anonymous Anonymous said...

I seem to be all over the place at the moment!

Hey Ticia, ooooh, I love being a Rain Goddess :)

Except now, there are places perilously close to flooding.

Hi Sarah that would be awful to put up with on a regular basis. However, you do sound like you have a good spicy brain to deal with the mongrels :)
And hi Madeline
(pssssst, Ariandalen...)

I love your rants Stacy!

At 01:04 Blogger Jess said...

Oh, I'm sorry about the gig, Q. That sucks. :( Hope they're prompt about the check-mailing, at least.

Saw the tweet-- yay! (Though I can't imagine what we're talking about. I haven't heard a thing. Twitter? What's that?)

Hi, Sarah and Madeline!

Ticia, I won't tell you how long it's taken me to type this much. What am I still doing up?! It's 2:00 am! I'd better go to bed. G'night, all.

At 01:06 Blogger Ticia said...

I think it's up to Quiche to decide who's invited in June... I was just being my normal thinking out loud kind of girl.

I just assumed (and I'm sorry if I was wrong) that vampires and skulls would be welcome. Maybe even a lycanthrope or two.

Just no musically dead, stick up their backsides prigs.

But, again I repeat myself...

It's up to Quiche. We came back for the Quiche.

At 01:13 Blogger Ticia said...

It happened again! So slow I am!

I hope the rains don't cause flooding Jacquib! I'm changing your goddess titles to Australian Mist Goddesses. Let's hope the weatger gods listen. :-)

And Jess, I don't know whether to be happy or sad for you that you're typing as slow as me. All I CAN say is: Go to bed you crazy wonderful fiend! It's late there!

At 01:19 Blogger Ticia said...

Darn typos! Weather gods!!!

And I just want to say, I twitter a lot, but I am also a loyal and closed mouthed friend. I don't plan on discussing anything over there that we talk about here. Just in case you were wondering.... Which you probably weren't... I'm just saying...

At 01:20 Anonymous Anonymous said...

You wonder how they could find their own conversation more interesting than the music, or the wonderful people playing the music.

I've been to a couple of things like that where they haven't even had the decency to have a live band. I'd rather stick pins in my eyeballs.

Goddesses in the Mist....Has a certain ring to it :)

G'night Jess :)

i'm confuzzled, was there leakage between blog and twitter? neither medium is inherently private. i just want to make sure i don't step out of line somewhere.

it is late, and i've worked way too many hours this week, and i get hte pleasure of working saturday and sunday, woo hoo. i miss my fiend time :) I hope all are well, having nice pleasant weather and fun with kitties.

did i mention recently how excited i am about june?

At 02:34 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Vampi, I think there's always leakage, I used to worry, but everyone keeps saying don't worry.

I'm sure Quiche would give us a nudge with a cattle prod if we stepped out of line!! :)

I can't imagine you stepping out of line, though. You always seem to be one of the nicest people- I've-never-actually-met-but-hope-to-someday!!

At 05:36 Blogger Marjorie said...

Quiche, sorry the gig was so sucky, and that they didn't pay you straight away - Maybe for future reference written confirmation in advance that peyment in full is required on the bight and theat penetly charge applies is thet fail? The decent venues shouldn't mind (becasue hey'll be paying when they ar upposed to anyway) and if the crappy ones do then you get the warning in advance! Just an idea.

".....We came for the vampires and lycanthropes, stayed for the Quiche!"

Leakage etc - you're bound to know stuff that's not public yet - I assume that you're not going to talk about it / answer any questions about it until it *is* public, likewise, there is going to be some cross over between here and Twitter but I'd assume that this is a bit less public than twitter. Also assuming that amoung ourselves, anyone who feels anyone else has been indiscrete or said stuff in the wrong place would feel able to say so. I can trust y'all to come after me with the Big Mallet of Correction if I step over the line, right?

Here's hoping that Boss's interview is available online! (and that he is able to enjoy it)

Adri, your party sounds much more fun!

Madeline & Sarah, Hello! Eska Vous Vous?

Right. Bath. and breakfast. Then a trip to the paper shop to ask whether there's any reason that they decided not to deliver half of my paper this morning... (Why is it never the Sports and Gardening sections they forget? Why is it always the reiviews / arts sections?)

At 06:01 Blogger Marjorie said...

good morning all! sorry your gig was not so much fun lorraine -invoice them fast, and i sure hope getting paid won't prove to be a problem. adri, that sounds like the best party ever, what fun. i hope the colbert interview goes online-i am not sure when that show airs at all, haven't had much time for tv of late. keep us posted! yes, june will be fun tho my schedule isn't quite cooperating. off to work - have a great day all!

At 08:49 Blogger Jess said...

Marjorie - They show Colbert on FX over your way (says the hub-man), if you get that channel on Sky or whatever-- and it'll turn up the day after. So, Tuesday.

Wouldn't worry, Vampi. It's an open secret now. :) Q's just giving us the heads-up.

At 09:04 Blogger EmilyLady said...

Jess, I don't get FX (I'm too stingey/not interested enough to have any channels that I have to pay for) They show highlights from 'The daily show' on More4... and FX have some clips on their webpage, so there's hope!

i can't wait to hear boss talk about the interview. i've always been curious about the show, it's so entertaining to watch because of the unexpected way Stephen interveiws. and they post clips of the show oncolbertnation boy went to a taping once and said it was hilarious. and boss is on the calender on colbert's page now!

Nope, no one here did anything, nor do I worry you would. Simply putting it out there in hopes of it helping the next time. I know where the "rumour" started and it has been dealt with.

(NOT a Fiend, or anyone close to Neil, or working for him)

I also wanted to let it be known that I do not saying anything until he does.

(Tho sure would have loved t share setting up Colbert Report!!!!!!)

At 10:40 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Sleepy morning!!! Going for a ride soon, it's so spring here.

Gig tonight. I am going to go NUTS! Ought to be a lot of pre st St Pats too, which will be fun.

Isn't it funny yesterday about my horrorscope and me joking I would not say a word on stage? I didn't, neither did Paul mostly.

Oh, I am so glad that is over. Those poor people.

The other strange thing was they were mostly older, but they DRANK, couple before, lots of wine with dinner, and not one after, but a couple.

And they all drove home. They were not under the limit.

At 10:42 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Ah, me again.....

I'll just drink tea until you come back, chatty ones.

At 10:50 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Not paid sucks BIG time. They'd better be swift with payment or else...
As for the ambience - or lack thereof - well it's a country club so there isn't much that could be done about it. The only good thing is that this type of place/people rarely ask for the unicorn song.

At 11:05 Blogger Dan Guy said...

I have been on the receiving end of Quiche's cattle prod of out-of-line-ness, uhm...., twice? At least once. It is, indeed, traumatic. Your head spins and you lose all sense of time and hours later you can't remember anything except that you'll never do "it" again. ^_^

At 11:05 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

As if they would TALK to us. It was good in the sense that I enjoyed being with Paul, talking about songs, doing some new things, working on songs for St Pats. Kind f a paid rehearsal.

Or not paid as the case might be.

At 11:07 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Don't think I LIKE having to do that Dan, and trust me that I was gentle, you should see me when I blast the Hell out of someone.

Doesn't happen often.

Assistants are REALLY protective of their Bosses.

At 11:18 Blogger DataGoddess said...

Sheesh. I can believe it, having been in the country club environment before (parents belong to one), but it sucks royally. Hopefully the check will actually arrive in a timely fashion!

And, honestly, as far as you discussing Boss stuff, I figure you discuss your life, and occasionally there are things related to him that you share. But events in *his* life are his to share, and as a professional you know and respect that. And that's something I really respect you for.

Adri, did you take pictures of the cupcake and burlesque show?? Sounds like a lot of fun!!

And I can't wait to see some fiends in person soon :-)

At 11:30 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

I didn't much mind for myself, but it was really hard watching the way they treated the waitstaff, like they were so not people. None of them smiled when they weren't at the table.

I am off for a ride. Seems to be Spring-ish out there. Then home. Shower and gig.

Hans is working odd hours today for Cabal tending, so all I had to do was to go see him early this morning, and then I'll stop by after the gig. Boss is flying. A day off almost.

At 11:56 Blogger Marjorie said...

Enjoy your ride! The wierd thing about the drinking & driving thing is that you'd think they'd be the kind of people who could afford a cab - I guess it's part of the arrogance - 'we're too important yo be polite to waiting and other staff, we don't have to worry about drink-drive laws because of course WE won't have an accident...'

Gah. But St Pat's will be much more fun!

Speaking of which, will you be taking requests? And is 'The Butterfly Road' in your repetoire at present?

At 12:10 Blogger spacedlaw said...

I would LOVE to hear the Butterfly Road too.

At 12:23 Blogger TommyB said...

Crap. Well- ignore my advice from now on.

i'm glad i've never been on the end of a quiche prodding! sounds scary.

i so very rarely check twitter during the day, so when i saw the bit about colbert, i did have a squee fangirl moment. then i proceeded to tell everyone i know to watch monday. :) i saw stephen live a few years ago, he did the pep rally for florida state univeristy home coming. he was amazing live. it was kind of formatted like the show, but also different. just spectacular to watch.

i'm not a stalker, i swear... i really cba.

oooh side note, what does DD mean in DD1, DD2, etc? someone else unrelated to fiendom has started using that nomenclature and i'm confused. i mean i get it's like kids and significant other, but...??

Dear/Darling DAughter?? (that's what I've been reading it as, but i could be wrong!)

At 12:45 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dear Daughter 1 and 2...or is it Dearest Daughter?

Demon Daughter?

Okay, maybe I'm NOT the one to answer this... :)

At 12:47 Blogger vampi said...

lol, ok that makes sense. i think i was trying to be more creative in the initals. no idea where that was going though.

At 12:55 Blogger Marjorie said...

well, for Fiends, Demon Daughter might well be the correct term...

At 13:32 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow that really sucks about the cc gig! I am so sorry. Not getting paid is just adding insult to injury! No more gigs for snotty non paying country clubs.
Don't even get me started on the snake thing. The only time I have ever screemed in my life *shudder*
I totally agree that Boss is part of your realm and that we shall hear of him from time to time but it seems that everyone is respectful of the boundries.
Wicked excited about the Colbert Report though :)
Hope you had a good ride!

At 13:33 Blogger dabbler said...

Having in-laws of the country club persuasion, I can totally sympathize, Q, with the attitude, and cluelessness. One of the couples they are friends with would frequently travel with 'road drinks'!!

Of course, she later died of liver cancer...

I have to say my mother-in-law has always been more ware that the people who wait on her are human than many of her friends, or, for that matter, her second husband.

Here's hoping you get paid ASAP.

At 13:54 Blogger AletaMay said...

What a drag of a gig. I would think that private party type things would often be hard because people are not really there to see you. Getting paid is a pretty important part of that equation.

Rumors: People say the darnedest things. Rumors can be fun and speculation about future projects for favorite creative types is a great game. Someone like your boss, who is in so many ways open and seems go make professional information available to the public as soon as it is practical to do so makes for loyal fans -- but also makes for people who think they have the right to know everything about everything all the time. One of the things that is funny about that is that people really know so little about each other even when they live in the same house or next door or are best friends. People who know me well don't know lots of pieces of my life, really. Mostly that is mundane stuff anyway and who would want to know? So. Rumors have their place in the world -- the professional ones anyway -- but should never be confused with reality. The personal ones should always be greeted with a fistful of salt. [/weird little soapboxy moment]

Off to pick up godchild. I would like to start a rumor right now that My Godchild will be a first class writer of fiction AND film scores in 15 years. Feel free to spread that around!

At 15:15 Blogger Marjorie said...

Aleta, rumour can be started! And later, when she is famous, we will all claim tht we knew her well (despite never having met her and not knowing her name!) Deal?

At 15:33 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Back from my ride, lots of fun people there today, and I got to watch a lot of good riding.

Rode Anna today, I kind of alternate between her and Tess. I'd forgotten how BIG she is. And they all have spring fever.

Got pretty nervous but did ok. Had to stop and sit for a bit when Mel was lunging a really wild itty bitty pony. It's ridiculous I should still getting nervous. It's that that is beating me.

Have to get over this fear of riding.

At 15:48 Blogger Marjorie said...

{{hugs}} from what you've said, it sounds as though you are going to the best place to conquer that fear - I hope you enjoyed it despite feeling nervous.

At 16:23 Blogger gaypet said...

"Rode Anna today, I kind of alternate between her and Tess. I'd forgotten how BIG she is. And they all have spring fever."

Sounds like a porn script. Or something...

M, Ginger, Zelda and I went for a walk. It was SO nice to be outside! Now I am going to wash our clothes, the dogs and the floors. It's just a little muddy. :)

At 16:51 Blogger Jess said...

You did it, though, Q, and that's the important thing. The fear might never really go, but it'll get easier to go and do in spite of the nerves.

Bleah, what a nothin' day it's been here-- just a load of running around shopping for non-fun things, like toilet paper. :P And where did the day go? I haven't even started laundry yet.

Safe travels to those currently sitting in chairs in the sky!

Oh, so glad I don't have a beverage at the moment, Gayle. :D

At 17:01 Blogger Marjorie said...

Gayle - just so you know, Cat is now sitting on the far side of the room with his back to me, because I laughed too hard and upset him!

I think today must be 'nothing' day. Mine's been that way, too. My greatest achievement today? Laundry. And even there I managed to dye most of it pinkish, by mistake. It's not even as if I much *like* pink!

At 17:14 Blogger Lexocat said...

Wow, I missed an entire post. that's what I get for trying to declutter my entire existence!

Will catch up as I can. But seeing that Marjorie's pink laundry comment is the last one up as I'm typing this, I am reminded of a college dorm event that had the unfortunate result of dying all the (male) HR's underwear pink. At least it happened near Valentine's Day...

At 17:24 Blogger Stardustgirl said...

Adri wins for fun evening! Pasties and Pastries sound like a lot more fun than stuffy country club types.

Sorry you didn't get paid yet. Are they familiar with the concept of "late fee"? I'm sure you're just the person to introduce that to them ;-)

Ah, rumors. They're everywhere. I had a neighbor (sad, attention-needy type) who spread some whoppers about me, which I was mostly amused by. I mean, *I'm nobody*. Why bother? Plus it's useful for weeding out those with poor judgment. If they're taken as truth without validation, that tells me the person believing it isn't all that smart and definitely not someone I want to hang with. High school really never ends.

I'm the worst person to tell something if you want it to be leaked, and I've taken to explaining that upfront. If I'm told something that isn't supposed to get out (yet) it stays here. It really won't get out. If you've got something you'd like leaked, but don't want to be the source then you must tell me that. I won't think less of you; I've worked in enough PR situations where that's how things go that I understand it. But if you *say* it's a secret, then it stays mum. Some people find that frustrating, LOL! I'm just boring that way. Oh... exception to that is if you're plotting to kill someone. All bets are off then.

I do love the Mac rumor sites, however. Reading about what people are wishing / hoping / craving in new features is interesting.

At 17:26 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Ok, that was really funny Gayle! I'll be glad when yr school is done and you can be by more, we miss you!

Yea, I will get over this fear thing. I wonder if it would be easier if it was an irrational fear? I mean, you CAN get hurt riding, quite easily. It's a valid fear I will just have to get GOD at it.

I don't mind laundry anymore since I developed y System. It involves wearing only black, and leaving my clothes in the basement when clean. I just go down and get dressed there every morning, taking the dirty ones to the machine, and when it is full, just start it.

My only housekeeping success.

Do you guys want Danguy to make numbers on the comments?

At 17:27 Blogger Siri said...

What does "make numbers on the comments" mean?

Is that something like betting on who is going to be first? Or who will kill the thread the fastest?

At 17:34 Blogger Marjorie said...

My laundry system is heading that way, Quiche - I have a v. nice red top which I wear infrequently enought that I keep forgetting I need to hand wash it. Luckily mostly what I've dyed pink this time are the socks I wear inside my boots, and some of my teatowels and such like, so mostly it doesn't matter, except to make me feel incompetant (as I have done the same thing, washing the same garment, twice in less than 6 weeks. *sigh*)

Numbers on the comments - as per tweet, I think this would be handy, for when the comments get legthy, as it's easier to identify who you're replying or referring back to.

It's true, I got the barest glimpse of chastisement and my face glowed for a week. I can't even fathom the awesome might of her fully operational fury.

Back in the days of the old blog, someone asked if we could have comment numbers of the comments. Like, for example, so they'd be numbered, and you could tell who was actually #100 without counting from the top. That way you could reference, "I was replying to Siri in #53, not Siri in #56." I didn't do it at the time because FabLo was migrating blogs. When I remembered it earlier today, I twittered her to ask if she (still) wanted me to set it up.

When I was titular head of a company I made sure that everyone who worked for us got paid, even when I didn't. ::shaking head::

I had to laugh silently for DD standing for Demon Daughter as I didn't want to wake either of mine. I use them as Dear Daughter and DH as Dear Husband, which I've read started out on the knitting lists but I don't know for sure. This would make DS, Dear/Darling/Demon Son. My husband thought that it stood for "Damn Husband" until I told him "no." Add to that, in DD1's case it could stand for Dinosaur Daughter due to her obsession with dinosaurs.

Home! Not that anyone is still up, but you will be in the morning. I will go and do a new post.

Fods, Dan, not I am feeling bad! I can't actually ever speaking harshly to you. I might have mentioned something that needed to change, tho I can't recall exactly what, but it didn't stand out, nor was it major...

Lesson for me. And I am sorry you felt so badly.

I'm kind of a pit bull where job related things are.

SO glad to hear tonight's gig is a fun one. Off to bed.

I hope the gig was a good one this time.

Woke up to find I had been interviewed (though not on the Colbert Show) and had completely forgotten about it...
That is a weird feeling. I think I'd better not read what I wrote two and a half months ago, I'll only tear at my hair.

Yeesh, how rude! And having to suffer through an audience like that and then NOT get paid is inexcusable.

Boss being on Colbert is happy news.:) Hopefully Boss will get a few words in edgewise;).

Q, it's okay to be scared when you ride, it will lessen with time. A little fear is a good thing, keeps you cautious. It is awfully scary sometimes though when you're on an extra tall horse..that always makes me more nervous..it's just it's such a looong way down!

Adri - Burlesque and Cupcakes sounds like a rockin' idea.:)

Siri, I can gladly say that I'm one of the UNtwitterpated. Wanna race walkers?;)

Maureen - EEK I forgot your firbday *blush* Hope you had a happy one. And this: High school really never ends.
is just so sadly true.

Hope the gig was a vast improvement Q:)
