Is Spring Here????

Hello and Welcome! I see that my Boss has linked to the site today, which has been fun. Welcome to all the new people following on Twitter! Nice to meet you! Please feel free to jump in and comment, we are a friendly bunch here, and talk about pretty much everything. (There IS no "Off Topic") If your heart is good and you are friendly, you are very welcome with us, truly.

I feel I must mention one thing tho...It is ME who loves Mangoes more than anything. Not Boss. Ah, to live in a part of the world where one could have a Mango tree...

The Very Sticky Honey Extraction is DONE. This is all honey from our too hives that died this winter (RIP Hives, you will be missed!) The Kelli and Kitty Hives. Kitty, yes, you will live on in spirit, your hive did well. Very well in fact. It was the Kitty hive that won the Blue Ribbon last year at the County Fair. (Kitty, Cat Mihos, is Boss's other Assistant who lives in LA. She also runs Neverwear.net, for those of you who haven't been following long.)

New Bees (Which come in the mail, kid you not, in "Packages", can you say "Popular at the post office??) come at the end of the month.

Honey done, we are moving onto Garden. I know the essay on Day In The Life of a Personal Assistant did not cover a few things. Ok, A lot of things. I need to write another one. Or add to it. But yes, extracting honey, and planting Garden are also in the Job Description. (Which starts of Page One, Index. I may publish it as a Novella one of these days)

Peas today. Need to get them in EARLY. They are happiest that way.

Before that tho, I am taking a break and going for my workout, which involves Tess here. This was taken yesterday. It is important when riding to select the proper attire, if you want to fit in with the horse set and all. I had chosen my new Jason Webley Skull shirt. Yup. Fit right in. Of course, I completed the ensemble with my Purple Riding Hat, which matches my purple hair. I feel strongly one must be dressed right for the occasion.

Remember those Fairies from the 100K Tweet contest Boss did a while back?

They seem to be following me....

Love and Spring,
Lorraine

I *love* that Webley skull shirt.

Jess- your jokes are killing me. :D

At 11:59 Blogger EmilyLady said...

Louisa, was that supposed to be a little poem?

Because it was.

At 12:00 Blogger louisa said...

I'm a poet and completely unaware of the fact! Thanks Em :)

At 12:08 Blogger Unknown said...

Thanks for mentioning your "bucket and cheesecloth" method. I only have one hive, so an extractor is a pricey investment, so I'm going to try your tactic for this year. Maybe next year, with four hives, we'll spring for the extractor.

At 12:09 Blogger Jess said...

Hooray for Twitterfairies, honey, and peas! But not all together at once. Though there's probably a web page for that somewhere.

Hee! Nice round-the-horse-nose peekage. Like that shot.

Adri - Nooo, don't die. My bad jokes aren't worth it! Die for Bill Bailey.

Hello, Taragl and everyone I haven't said hi to yet! :)

At 12:10 Blogger Marjorie said...

Love that pic of you & Tess. I'm glad you found time to go riding, and that you are keeeping up the appropriate high standards of dress:-)

discussions of planting peas reminds me that i failed miserabky to either buy or plant any tomato or courgette seeds last weekend. Maybe tomorrow...

At 12:10 Blogger Tim said...

I think part of the reason I enjoy your and Neil's blogs so much is that it reminds me how wonderful Minnesota is.

At 12:13 Blogger spacedlaw said...

That T-shirt looks cool.
A big waving hello from me all the way from Lorraine (the place).

At 12:15 Anonymous Kate T said...

Spring seems to be here and I'm glad to hear your peas are planted. On the southern tip of Lake Michigan we are in Zone 5 so I am able to get the peas in a bit earlier and can happily brag that they are UP! yup - and so's the arugula - Was worried about the dreaded snow last week and the toll it might take on the almost-ups, but they seem to be fine

What else is getting planted? I'm moving some day lilies from a shady spot they have been languishing in for a decade. I always refer to this as "editing" the garden. I edited the fruit trees earlier.

We wait for our perennially tardy friends from Minneapolis. They are on their own clock. Soon come, soon come.

At 12:19 Blogger Ani said...

Sorry you lost the hives this winter, Q--the honey looks wonderful, though, so they live on yet. Wonderful that things look so spring-y! Love the pictures--

At 12:22 Blogger DataGoddess said...

It might be easier to say what's not part of your job, Quiche :-D

That's a ton of honey. And what do they put bees in to ship them, without they're dying on the trip?!

At 12:26 Blogger Phiala said...

Because nobody's done it yet (and I fully expect to be banned from Fiendom for this):

I eat my peas with honey,
I've done it all my life.
It makes the peas taste funny,
but it keeps them on the knife.

(Sorry, Jess, doesn't include Twitterfairies.)

At 12:33 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Lorraine minds the peas while we, fiend, mind the Q...

At 12:36 Anonymous Ames said...

I need more evidence of this purple hair. I can't see anything with you hiding all coyly behind that horse.

At 12:39 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Oh good! More riding stories. I've been missing those.

BTW, your blog has a great mobile style sheet. Thanks!

At 12:42 Blogger Tamidon said...

day old baby chicks come in the mail too, but i suspect the post office thinks they're a bit cuter and safer than bees

At 12:42 Blogger Tamlyn Leigh said...

That is a LOT of honey :) so that means there is a lot of bread with honey, honey cookies, honey roasted anything in your future?

I so love planting, my peas are just above ground now in my greenhouse, the tomatoes are 1 inch tall now (in my windowsill). I just can't wait to get the salads going though :)

Greetings from a long time lurker, first time poster from a finally sunny (just before sunset darnit!) Holland :)

Have a Quiche Lorraine while you are there and blogging Nat. Then you can have a Lorraine while sitting in Lorraine and chatting with Lorraine. It would be Lorraine overload. hehe. btw, glad to hear you are okay, Nat. I haven't been around much lately but I did kinda frantically check for your comments after hearing about the quake.

Somehow I don't recall ever seeing this legendary purple helmet. Pix please!! oh.. and that's a request for more pictures... not pixies. But if you have a few spare pixies lying around I would be happy to take some home.

Hope everyone is doing well in fiend-dom. I have been missing you all in the last couple of weeks... so busy. Adri, caught your corset picture though, You Look Lovely.

At 12:45 Blogger Rubius said...

At 12:47 Blogger Marjorie said...

Good to see you again, Rubius! How is your cat?

And hello & welcome to all the new fiends

At 12:50 Blogger Marjorie said...

I don't think one is allwed to send anything alive through the mail here. I would have thought that bees would be more post-able and less fragile than day-old chicks..

How many bees do you get to start a hive off with - I seem to remember the queen came with a few followers last time but won't you need more to start a whole hive?

At 12:52 Blogger Erin Underwood said...

Bees in the mail! That gives a whole new meaning to "Special Delivery."

When a hive dies, does that mean ALL of the bees die too? Were you able to find them a "new" hive home or were they just lost?

Btw, the honey looks D-lish!

At 12:55 Blogger Jess said...

Ha! Phiala! :D

Would kill for a picture of the post office upon the Bee Arrival. Could we work on that one? Does the packaging specify Bees?

At 13:12 Blogger Erin Underwood said...

Can you imagine one of the postal inspectors thinking, "Hmmm, that's weird. There's something buzzing in there. Better inspect this package."

Bzzzzzzzzzz

Dan, lucky you! Have fun being NOT at work! ;-)

Hi Marjorie!! Lamie is doing fine. She bounced back and she is gaining weight. I am delighted each day at how happy she is to eat her food. She is now finishing off about three times the amount of wet food she used to eat before this all happened... and she is eating her crunchies too. I am so happy.... and she is extra affectionate.

I guess.... quiche!!!

At 13:36 Blogger Marjorie said...

That's good to hear, about LaMie - and that she isn't holding a grudge about the force-feeding.

At 13:47 Blogger Rubius said...

Woot!!! does that mean I win a prize??? I think your friendship is the best prize I could win, Nat. I will be sure to cuddle her extra tonight.

At 15:21 Blogger El said...

As a former US Postal Office employee, I can tell you that bees weren't popular with those of us who had allergies, but they were not the strangest thing regularly received there.

Everyone, say it with me now: Bull Semen.

True story.

Q, I'm willing to bet that fairies follow you an awful lot of places. Don't let the bengals eat them, eh?

Okay, I must do laundry. I must! I do not want to be clothes-less for the concert I'm going to tonight.

At 16:44 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

No Dan, I think you were just first. I do not have TIME for moderating...

Taragl, stay tuned here this year. We had no success with the extractor last year, but are going to try again. I LIKE the bucket and cheesecloth method. MESSY!

I do believe there IS a poem about peas and honey, Jess....DARN, scrolling down, mistress beat me to it.

At 16:49 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Tim, there's no place like home. No Mangoes tho.

KateT, I love that, "Editing the Garden"

Data, they put them in wooden boxes with screened sides. We'll do pics in late April/early May. And yes, they DO escape.

Ames, too true, too true. We'll try and get some purple hair shots soon, it IS time for new hair...

One Sock Short (Great name BTW) There will be more horse stories, I may be getting a new one soon, found out today. A move up!

Tamiden, they tell me that every time I pick up the bees, that the chickens are cuter...

At 16:56 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Tamlyn, I don't think we have had anyone from Holland before. I think we still have our Skull Map up, for everyone new, it's under Fiends, and you can put a Skull on a map where you are from..

Marjorie, you are making me laugh. You and Nathilie. And I have never COUNTED the bees, but one gets three pounds of them per box, one box per hive.

Erin, sometimes you can save a Queenless hive, but this winter just got 'em all, sadly.

Rubious, that's really great about yr Kittie, I am so glad she is better!

I know Nathilie. (Spacedlaw) It's a Mango.

I'll do pics with the purple helmet too soon, Rubious. I am th eonly one there who HAS one, believe it or not!

El, that's why they are in cages. The fairies. Not the Bengals.

At 16:57 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

I am commenting on myself again, aren't I?

See, New Fiends, this is what they do to me. If I come out, and am hanging here, you , if you want to be like everyone ELSE, must run and hide quickly, and not come out until I leave.

AM going grocery shopping. It is safe now.

I have a tiny one I wear pinned to my "It's Happy Bunny" hat. Happy Bunny wears it while he says, "It's all about me - deal with it." Maybe there's a tiara 12-step program.

And WE are having Passover quiche tonight. Sort of. Matzoh brie with kosher salami.

Welcome to the newly-fiendish!

I'll be back sometime soon. Have family here and have to do stuff. You know, like ask them if they want tea, make the tea, pour it, give it to them and get the (ack) sweetener and a spoon. And don't even get me started on the food... Life is hard.

Chantrelle-- you say that things might 'vanish and return more alcoholic' like it's a /bad/ thing. >_>

A perhaps honey moment...

"Well," said Pooh, "what I like best -- " and then he had to stop and think. Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn't know what it was called.

From A.A. Milne's WtP
What shall we call that moment?

At 19:09 Blogger vampi said...

honey-ticipation

At 19:30 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Coincidence. Uh-huh.

Has anyone ever read AA Milne's autobiography? It is really REALLY good. Written with that same sort of voice, that we all heard read before we could talk....

I am SO tired! But it si a good tired, all this riding. I am kind of excited about New Horsie, whom I might get soon. Lovely chestnut named Catera. Evil people tried to get me to buy her today, but I am not falling for THAT trick. Ride her, yes.

Trainer Melissa may come to the show Saturday night, so if any fiends are coming, come then and meet her. She will speak the truth of my horse skills. After a pint or two anyway.

Pete had to go and hunt down a shop that was open on Good Friday to get some sports drinks to get the fluids and electrolytes into me...

So, please point me to anything I cannot miss on Twitter, don't think I'll be reading 24 hours worth of Tweets.

heheheheheee......(it's late. Emily isn't reading this, is she?)

I am off to yell at MSN Windows Live some more. They have just informed me (when I went to login to my hotmail account) that I DO NET YET HAVE AN INBOX. And would I like to set one up?

Yeah, but how many places would you be lkely to go where you couldn't buy deoderant? Whereas finding the book you want in the language you need could be trickier! Plus, if you travel with cabin luggage only your deoderant is liable to be confiscated anyway...

Me - in order of prioroty
1. Medication
2. Clean underwear and shirt
3. books
4. deoderant & toothbrush

that way, the hardest to replace in a hurry items get packed first

I'd have gone with underpants. Underpants are vital when travelling.

Get better, sick persons! I don't think we've all been well at the same time since I started reading this blog. Which was when? August? Eesh.

At 11:02 Blogger Jane said...

Perfume? Not that I don't pack it, but surely it's not the crucial item :-) Whereas a book would be!

At 11:05 Blogger DataGoddess said...

Perfume *shudder* One issue I have with almost any public place is people who seem to bathe in perfume. Sat behind one last week when we went to see Stomp, and I'd forgotten my inhaler. Survived, but it was unpleasant.

I do wear perfume, but you have to get really close to me to smell it.

Books, iPod, and knitting are my travel essentials besides comfortable clothes. Toiletries can be purchased at the destination, if needed.

At 11:07 Blogger Adri said...

Travel items in order of importance:

1. Computer
2. Kindle
3. Clothes
4. Toiletries (I have no problem buying at my destination to avoid checking bags)

At 11:28 Blogger Adri said...

Apparently I have no running water and no ETA on getting running water b/c a work crew has dug up the street in front of my apartment.

Good thing the talk I'm giving today is online!

DataGoddess, as we know, breathing is not optional! So sorry you had to sit in the perfume cloud! I work with a woman who bathes in perfume and worse yet - she works out and showers/perfumes up at work and I have encountered her in the locker room which is the bathroom on my floor at school en deshabille *gak* both oversharing and overwhelming. PTSD at 7:30 in the morning!

I'm only dreaming of traveling right now, and the next trip is camping in southern Minnesota. Insect repellent will be tops on my list - followed by the book + iPod + computer as I head to a conference in Boston right from there.
Get well all - dr gave me an old-fashioned cough remedy with codeine yesterday. Very interesting dreams.

Congrats for taking on bee keeping! It is something that has always fascinated me, but I am far too chicken, and afraid of inadvertently murdering the bees, to do it myself.

At 11:51 Blogger Marjorie said...

Ug. yes, I have a problem with people bathing in perfume, too. Although I think people who have failed to bathe at all, in anything, are worse.... I have clients like that sometimes..

BTW, Q, I've just sent you an e-mail ;-0

At 12:06 Blogger Phiala said...

Yeesh. I wear perfume because it makes me happy, not because I expect or want other people to be able to smell it from more than 2 feet away. Speaking of which, any news on Spicy Brains.

I have a giant box o'computer waiting for me at home! Happy happy (and I am SUCH a geek!). And leftover Indian for lunch. Happy some more. And it's Friday.

And I'm going to make hot cross buns this weekend, despite not celebrating Easter. I do like to celebrate seasonal food. I'll make them tonight if I get home early enough, otherwise in the morning.

I am wasting time while the computer processes some files for me (and internesting rather than doing something useful).

Brain.
Overload.

Well, actually it just allowing a window to stay open overnight. This let all the lovely allergens into my body while sleeping night before last. ::sigh:: Oh, well. Antihistamine is my friend.

Hope your water is returned sooner rather than later, Adri!

For the newcomers: Fod, Fiends and Firbdays are all typos that we have embraced. In other words, they are typos no longer! :)

At 12:25 Blogger ariandalen said...

Hi, AsISeeIt! We all wear nice white jackets with buckles up the back. I'm sure you can find one laying about. :)

::sniff::
::sniff sniff::

Yup. Spicy!

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Happy Firbday Lys! I had no idea...

And get better too Dan, you've been sick for too long (my guess is: you don't rest enough)

At 12:45 Blogger ariandalen said...

Happy Firbday, Lys!
Hope your day is wonderful!

At 13:52 Blogger AsISeeIt said...

@ariandalen. Thanks :) I have a few friends with jackets like that, but most of them always seem to be finding ways to get out of them. (Some time ago back in college I spent about a year moonlighting as a Magician's Assistant...)

Back to yummy things like gardening, I am trying to start several vegetables from seeds this year and so far have mostly been running around trying to make sure nothing dies out from lack of light. I have an old fish tanked rigged up right now for tomato seedlings, but we shall see if they survive.

At 13:54 Blogger Phiala said...

I always want to start seeds indoors, but do not have enough places with the possibility of good light, and also a cat who thinks houseplants are the yummiest.

At 13:55 Anonymous Lysandwr said...

Thank you for Firbday wishes! Most kind, but that is the Fiendish way of course :)

Danth--use your infinite powers to make the being sick thingie history, okay? Or is being sick interfering w/those special abilities? I hope you achieve wellness soon, and the same for DSally...

Off to plant things today. That is my present to myself. Yesterday in Albuquerque we picked up cool bulbs, grass seed, and the like. It will be good and dirty around here today!!

At 14:17 Blogger AsISeeIt said...

Phiala..My place is a bit small too, I actually set up an old fish tank I had around in my bathroom following this advise I haven't tried it with the toilet paper rolls yet, but could be a plan for next year.

Cheeriest of Firbdays, Lys!!

Many happy returns of the day!!!

Seasonal food is the best reason to celebrate any sort of holidays, to my mind. It's what makes Passover so great. What's not to like about a holiday that requires you to recline with friends, share interesting old stories of slavery and struggles for freedom, discuss them wildly, eat good food and drink four ritual cups of wine?

At 16:13 Blogger Phiala said...

Ohhhh.... shiny!

And now to start the yeast for the hot cross buns.

At 16:24 Blogger Ticia said...

Apropos to nothing, I'm having the best 2 days.

It's not even one thing that's got me so excited. It's lots of little things.

Am I the only one that likes lots and lots of little awesome events and things as opposed to one giant event or thing?

Does that even make sense?

See - I knew it wasn't Saturday.....

Thanks, Phi....

At 17:30 Blogger Phiala said...

You will, Q! Rock will happen.

At 17:34 Blogger Jess said...

You'll rock their faces off. Put some good music on and have some Magic time. :)

At 17:36 Blogger Adri said...

Rock is totally going to happen!

At 17:42 Blogger Ticia said...

No doubt in my mind that rock WILL happen. I just wish I was there to see it!

At 17:47 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Thanks all! I will think of you, and read you during the breaks and Tweet you some Tweets. (I can Tweet but not comment, weird, eh?)

Anyone near Cleveland? There is an emergency foster situation going on, with a women who needs foster care for her two cats for up to one month (Long story) They need to be with no other pets, very short term.

You would need to be approved, and ideally, know Bengals, as one is an F1, but since this is very short term, it might be a good way to start out.

At 18:22 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Have a great gig Lorraine.

I'm a little better than yesterday - I can be semi upright and not want to chuck up. Woohoo. Not tempted at all to eat.

Adri, hope you have water sooner rather than later. would have been nice of them to warn you.

At 18:37 Blogger Siri said...

Sally - glad you are able to take nourishment. Not the best weight loss plan.

Where are you gigging, Lo?

Is there water in the tea kettle, Adri? Are they done yet?

At 18:51 Blogger Adri said...

Thankfuly the water came back on a few hours ago. The bengals are well pleased!

At 18:53 Blogger Adri said...

(there was, also, of course, water in the kettle and in the espresso machine, as well as enough in cups for teeth brushing)

Knock 'em dead, Q!

At 21:46 Blogger ariandalen said...

Sadly, I'll have to wait until tomorrow to read about tonight's ROCK. I'm falling asleep now. Well, maybe "want to sleep" is a better description.

Guess it's early to bed for me. I didn't realize that sniffing all those new spicy brains could be so tiring.

;)

At 00:14 Blogger Na said...

Hello? -lo? -lo? Sure is quiet in here tonight.

Hope the gig's been rocking and the fiends have kept you entertwittered, Ms. Fabulous.

I am afraid to check twitter this evening. *goes to check it anyway*

At 00:49 Blogger El said...

Hey all- the gig was good! Got there for second set, after tiki-bar birthday madness. We had fun and I got to bring new people and yay. Small crowd but actual jigging was done!

Very tired now. Been running full tilt since 6:50AM. But now I am in bed and I am saying goodniiiiiiiight.

At 01:18 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Yes, rock happened. El and friends were great, but second set wasn't so small a crowd, M'dear! Third, well yes..But who can resist us ending with Elvis's "I can't help falling in love with you" ??

New post up, if anyone IS up so late...Or am I alone here?

Travel essentials:

1. Meds
2. iPod (including audiobooks) and charger
3. books
4. phone, camera, laptop and CHARGERS
5. clothes
6. pillow (with a not-white pillowcase so Housekeeping doesn't take it and put their icky one on your pillow)
7. snacks

I don't travel very light. And I do travel frequently (used to all the time when I was a bank examiner,) but I only pack as much as I can schlep by myself. We have those big hard-side pullman suitcases that hold way more than 40 lbs., and we pack a down pillow on one side which keeps it at the right weight.

Am working my way down the last 80 posts here...

At 00:06 Blogger hi!monkey said...

hi! a pal showed me the newest addition to her family residing into a hole in of her trees. naturally, we have tons of questions for a bee person including "how do we find a bee person?" "can we get the bees to upgrade to a nice new bee prefab bee condo in the garden?" "until we learn all the bee's names, can we ask them to wear name tags?" any advice would be appreciated.

At 10:43 Anonymous eun hye said...

hi there! I'm from the Philippines and we have mangoes here! We have a mango tree in our front yard and another at the back (different varieties). Lots of mango plantations just outside town. It's mango season now and a kilo costs about 15 pesos ($0.30) both ripe and unripe. Feel free to come over. :)
