Living with Leopards...

(Edited to add: This post was written a day or so ago, and was written with long time readers in mind, who know a lot of my history with Magic, and Bengal Rescue. Tonight's post will clarify a few things hopefully, and settle some mis-information, and perhaps foster some good disscussion..Thank you, please read more tonight...Love and Kitties, Lorraine)

Magic, as most of you know is my F1 Bengal. Most of you also know that the term F1 means he is half Asian Leopard, and half Egyptian Mau (A domestic cat) This first picture, above, is one I found of a full Asian Leopard. Not my Magic. It has a lovely border around it, to distinguish it from the Magic pictures. Of which there are a lot tonight.

I could watch Magic for hours. Seeing as how it took months for him to come out of his cave, I have a lot of catching up to do. Venus and Mim are cats who have a whole lot of Leopard characteristics. Magic is a Leopard who has some cat traits. He was bounced around from home to home, going from person to person who wanted a "Cute little Kitty with Spots." He is not, a tame Kitty. I have never touched him. In time, perhaps, but surely no one else ever will.

Early Generation Bengals are a lot more like Leopards in appearance, tho the later ones all have some of these traits, none of them have as much as Magic does. Longer neck, shorter legs, smaller ears, rounder face, larger body. Very vocal too, when they feel they have something to say. Magic has taken to Mewing me every time I come home. (Venus and Mim, I must admit, are not silent Kitties either)

Magic plays. The Featherstick was invented for these cats. They love water too. Magic's water dish is a large dishpan, and we are going to upgrade that. He loves to climb. He is going to get some steps, with leaves and such, so he can climb to the top of the shelves, where he will have a second Cave. I hope to get him a Branch he can sit on. He has his own room. He will never be at a point where he can be in the entire house, with the other, later generation Bengals. He is not a Pet. But he is my friend.

Later Generation Bengals F4 and higher, make great pets. Hours of entertainment. I've never been with cats I like better. Kind of expensive, unless, ah-hem, you adopt one out of rescue. There are lots in rescue. For lots of reasons.

I have learned a LOT living with this Leopard. It took months before I knew his name. Months before he came out, and longer before he would trust me. Some anyway. He came into rescue because no one else would take him. The shelter wouldn't touch him. There was no home for him. When I brought him home, he was silent the entire four hour drive. Cats, as you know, will yowl for someone to come and help. Magic was silent, he knew there was no help, and any sound he made, would invite nothing but trouble.

Things are a little different now for Magic.

And for me.

Love and Leopards,
Lorraine

Wow! Busy place today and last night.

Hi new readers! Thanks to all the experts for the great info on Bengals-and-leopards-and-cats-oh-my.

I loved Nancy Drew. I like Dickens alright and I like Steinbeck. Loved Grapes of Wrath. I had some great high school English teachers. I was lucky. Not sure what my comfort reading is. Anything that I can get lost in.

Ugg. I think I must have been abducted by aliens today. I can't understand how it gt this late. Must be "missing time."

mmm cabaret, i love the music from cabaret, except the pineapple song.

american gods isn't comforting? i rememebr liking it very much and finding it very interesting spiritually. of course i followe dit up with Pterry's small gods, so maybe i was in one of those must read puzzling spiritual fictions for comfort moods.

(i also lov dune, it is one of my comfort reads now, i'm weird)

Cats suck.**

Obligatory. They are mammals, after all.

**And I can't read Lovecraft, cause the creepy awfulness of all the characters is too much. Nobody to like at all.**

Like Faulkner. Aaargh. I think that man hated everyone.

Lots of new peeps! (Not Peeps) Ari is possibly getting overexcited. Who has the dried frog pills?

I broke a part on my Mac charger and the peeps at the Apple Store gave me a new one! Woot! Also, I got to have lunch with old work friends and then the spouse came home with a handpacked Godiva Dark Assortment for me, me, me! This is a Friday like Cabal's Stick. It is Wonderful Stick Day. Best evar!

Hope you all are heading into great weekends. Need to check the Pterry board. I am Assistant Western Hemisphere Moderator! And they doubled my pay! :-)

Back later. I'm finally trying the ticky box.

I just discovered that I'd missed a whole pile of comments due to gmail breaking the comments into 2 emails.
Vampi - I'm with you, its the wordiness of Lovecraft that makes him hard for me to read.

And yes - American Gods is another book on my easy escape list.

Sally, my sympathy. Lat year they rebuilt our road...lowering it three feet in the process. From March till early November. At 6 am many days.

I hope your neighbors project goes much more quickly...in days, not months.

Lovely poem Jess!

Such a day for chatter, and a lot of interesting points and new people, I love it!

Just got home and took a LOT of pics of King Lear and Queen Mab. I am going to take Venus and Mim for a leash walk with my Neighbor (I don't care WHAT kind of cats they are, if you are leash walking it is one cat to one person.) and then I'll come in and do a new post, perhaps settleing a couple things, and who knows what else.

I have some spring fever, as it is warm (For here) 45, and tomorrow is, well snow again...

At 19:29 Blogger vampi said...

lol 45. It was 67 here and i was like "hmm it's a bit chilly" mostly because of the wind though.

sorry about the snow

hooo-freaking-ray it's friday :)

At 20:01 Blogger Jess said...

Why thank you, Q. I wrote it specially for the tick-box.

Love Dune. The others in the series, not so much, but the first one's gorgeous and strange.

I liked Faulkner. Much preferred him to Hemingway and Carver. Think I may have been the only one who did!

At 20:03 Blogger Chantrelle said...

I know the granddaughter (and great-granddaugher--ben's age) of hemingway. Cool little connection ;)

At 20:09 Blogger Jess said...

Chantrelle-- wow. How cool is that!

At 20:12 Blogger Adri said...

I actually love Faulkner, as long as I don't have to do analysis of it later! It's such deep, rich language. Reading Faulkner is a sensory experience that I think you just have to absorb without thinking of it too much.

Like cheesecake.

At 20:56 Blogger Fluffy said...

I always felt sad for Faulkner's characters - even the animals. He seemed to hate them so much.

I was just thinking the ticky box didn't work and just remembered I linked it to my gmail. Duh.

Martini or not to martini?

Oh, and I forgot to mention they issued a tiara to us Assistant Moderators. What do you think? Is it me?

At 21:15 Blogger Dan Guy said...

I re-read the entire Dune series* about every 18 months. I love Dune. (I'm on the left.)

* = Not including Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's attempts to piss on Herbert's grave by writing their own Dune books.

At 21:20 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Fluffy, got a url for the board?

Dan, you've reminded me. Dune has been on my to-read list for ever. Why haven't I read them yet then?

At 21:25 Blogger vampi said...

oh that's cool chantrelle! Hemingway as a person was way fascinating. i might actually like some Hemingway now that i am not required to analyze it. when we went to key west we walked around his neighborhood. it's funny because all of the bars say he ate there, like every hotel on the east coast says washington slept there.
key west

At 21:31 Blogger ariandalen said...

Yes, Fluffy, very much you. :)

At 21:31 Blogger Jess said...

Oh Dan. You win at license plates. :D

So not long after we met, the manwife points out to me that in Dune the main character is, you know, Paul (which is what he's called) and that his mother is, heh, Jessica. And then I said that maybe we shouldn't mention the fact ever again.

The best relationships are built on comedy. And quoting stuff. It's like the next step up from picking off each other's nits and eating them.

I started reading Dune when I was 13. Due to school work, and having read The Agony and the Ecstasy by Irving Stone the previous semester, I never finished it. ::sigh:: I should probably read it...someday. ;)

Besides, it has the whole House of Atreus in the far flung future going for it.

Not that the post is done yet, soon...

My favorite car window sticker ever that I hope to replace some day, read Vulcan Science Academy.

At 22:16 Blogger Bulfinch's Aglaia said...

For some reason, I hated Dune. And I mean hated. I wanted them to all be dead and by painful processes by the time the book ended, but I honestly don't quite remember why (I was 18 when I read it and that was many many many years ago) (Did I say many?). If I'm guessing, I think it's because I didn't like *any* of the characters at all. Not a one. But my memory of it has faded.

Now, if you like long not-hard-science scifi books, and honey you know I do, I vote for the amazing Connie Willis and her Doomsday Book. It is in my top ten ever ever ever (if you count LOtR as one book, and I do). I think I've stated this before, but here it is again. :-)

Is the day getting better for anyone? Just wondering...

At 22:20 Blogger Fluffy said...

Sally, the (HarperCollins) Pratchett message board url is http://www.terrypratchettbooks.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php

The hanging out and not necessarily discussing books part is Sator Square, and the daily chat part is the Third Person Thread. It will mess with your mind. I started thinking things like, "Fluffy is wondering if she should have guacamole or..."

I'm thinking of changing my profile picture there, too, which should cause comment since it's been the same since '06.

At 22:34 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Oh cool, thanks Fluffy.
Hey, has anyone else read AFP's latest blog entry and been shaking their heads at the world?(not at AFP -she rocks)

At 23:13 Blogger Fluffy said...

Aaargh! That is the weirdest commercial ever. I posted a link on FB and sent it to my girlfriends. My NZ buddy will keel over when she sees the pink lawnmowers.

The story about the mom with the 11-year-old is just creepy. What is wrong with people?

At 23:36 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

I suppose this AFP blog means that I have to tell HER as well about the movie "Why We Wax" as it might cheer her up...

I loved The Agony and the Extasy but I suppose this is also because I was never forced to analyse it.
And I loved the first Dune book too (loved the smells in it).

At 03:14 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Can you view it online Nathalie?

At 03:32 Blogger spacedlaw said...

No, (not yet at least, the movie still does the festival rounds) but you can watch an interview of Kimber ly there.

Hey, all. Thanks for the welcome. I have been looking on Petfinder for declawed kittehs. I thought I found one, but I didn't think I was the right Person for her, and I am a big believer in Forever Homes for pets. And right now I am waiting for kismet to tell me it is the Right Time to bring a kitteh into our crazy household. Now is not that time...

I think I own about 45 Trixie Belden books, the reissues from the 70s with the yellow covers. I wanted to be Trixie, and had a mad crush on Jim.

I read Faulkner in high school, and he made me cranky and depressed. A friend of mine and I used to write notes to each other written in Benji-speak (from "The Sound and the Fury"). I too am a comfort rereader. I reread the Boss, or Alcott's "Little Women," or a cheesy smut novel.

Bloop!

Be sure that you are putting the appropriate quantity of water inside your coffee maker. Should you don't place adequate water in, the coffee is going to be as well strong. Within the other hand, when you put too much water in it, your coffee will probably be watered down. Generally, an excellent rule of thumb should be to put two cups of water in for each and every cup of coffee you happen to be making. Use a French press to brew coffee which has a wealthy, robust flavor. The paper filters within a drip-style coffee maker absorb the flavorful oils in coffee. A French press, on the other hand affordable coffee makers , consists of a plunger that pushes the coarsely ground beans towards the bottom on the carafe. The oils remain within the brew, lending a richer flavor.

Invest in a fundamental coffee grinder. Grinding your beans just just before brewing leaves aromatic, flavorful oils intact and tends to make coffee taste fresher. Most models allow you to adjust the coarseness of your grind to accommodate distinct brewing designs. In case you prefer not to possess a separate appliance cheap coffee makers , appear for any coffee maker with an built-in grinder. Generating an incredible cup of coffee genuinely is dependent upon your coffee maker. It doesn't have to be by far the most high priced model to create a great cup of coffee, however it does have to brew the coffee effectively. Appear for a coffee maker who will extract each of the very best elements out of just about every single bean.
