There Is No Lorraine. Only Zul.
Hello, my Fiends. Taking a quick break from a day that promises not to stop in the near future. Been going non-stop since 7:00am this morning, and that didn't include a ride with Anamontana. Some weeks, or couple of weeks get like this. E-mail doesn't stop. Phone doesn't stop. Problems, which I like to call "Situations" don't stop. You walk a tighrope, make your best guess and hope for the best. Get everyone everything they need.
I got it all, don't get me wrong. And am feeling good about every little detail for the most part. But there sure isn't much left over.
I have no wit. No clever stories. No Bengal pictures. The Bees didn't come. (Which I am REALLY glad about, couldn't have done it today, the way things turned out) But I have nothing.
Your turn. Yup. Entertain me.
Jokes? Top Five Desert Island Disks? (greatest hits don't count and double cd's count two. Unless you pick one) A Lovely story that will delight and amuse me? How bad was YOUR day? Give me something. I want to wander thru your chatter and smile.
Love and Buried,
Lorraine (AKA Zul)

Hey sweetie - I don't have any jokes but I feel for your brain dead - I get it myself. Let me think if something - I'll be back.
There is something seriously tiring about that heavy lifting with your brain. Didn't someone mention that thinking uses more energy than physical activity? I believe it!
A friend came yesterday afternoon to spend the evening and night. She was brain dead from work herself, so we put the top down on her convertible and went shopping for flowers for my deck container garden. The farmers' market was such a blast of color and beauty that we both felt much better instantly.
OK, maybe not so entertaining. Feeling kind of brain dead myself :-)
I'm the only one out here, aren't I?
No, you're just quicker off the mark than the rest of us!
I hear and obey. Forthwith is another gem from archy and mehitabel, by Don Marquis. It's not my favorite, but I thought you might like this one better. Plus, someone already transcribed this one for me...
the lesson of the moth
i was talking to a moth
the other evening
he was trying to break into
an electric light bulb
and fry himself on the wires
why do you fellows
pull this stunt i asked him
because it is the conventional
thing for moths or why
if that had been an uncovered
candle instead of an electric
light bulb you would
now be a small unsightly cinder
have you no sense
plenty of it he answered
but at times we get tired
of using it
we get bored with the routine
and crave beauty
and excitement
fire is beautiful
and we know that if we get
too close it will kill us
but what does that matter
it is better to be happy
for a moment
and be burned up with beauty
than to live a long time
and be bored all the while
so we wad all our life up
into one little roll
and then we shoot the roll
that is what life is for
it is better to be a part of beauty
for one instant and then cease to
exist than to exist forever
and never be a part of beauty
our attitude toward life
is come easy go easy
we are like human beings
used to be before they became
too civilized to enjoy themselves
and before i could argue him
out of his philosophy
he went and immolated himself
on a patent cigar lighter
i do not agree with him
myself i would rather have
half the happiness and twice
the longevity
but at the same time i wish
there was something i wanted
as badly as he wanted to fry himself

how is Cabal?
We are having cat poop issues around here and DH came to the bedroom door this morning at 7:30a to announce that there was poop in the box. And if you don't think that wasn't *great* news... :-)
darn! ticky box...
Best story of my day: I was offered $50 and a pair of rather used blue ballerinas for my black motorcycle boots today. The first time ever anybody offered to buy my shoes at a bus stop.
Not really entertaining, perhaps, but it put a smile to my face.
Our baby chicks didn't come today either. What's with these teensy animals coming late via post -- don't they realize we're *waiting*?!
On a side note, I told my husband, "I'm having a baby in 10 weeks, so cool it on the chick order, m'kay? Like four or six... maybe eight."
The man ordered THIRTY-FIVE. o_0
Good to know you are on top of the giant Heap of Situations, Q. I am about to go to bed, so maybe not so much on the entertaining you just now.
My last few days here until something more fun comes along..
Watched Lost In Austen and if you like the A&E P&P you'll probably like this. Fun to watch and it's a good one to watch without knowing much about it.
Hi all - no good jokes - heard one about curing swine flu with oinkment that raised a chuckle. But that's it.
No jury duty this AM ( on standby) - so both a relief and oddly disappointing because I was actually called at the same time and place as a friend of mine (how often does that happen?) and was looking forward to earning my $17.85 laughing in the jury room. Instead I had to grade student work. The WORST part of teaching.
I need to scoot so that I can get eldest girlchick to circus class. Their show opened to amazing reviews so they are fine tuning the routines. Can't be late. Love and hopefully bees for ou tomorrow.
OMG 39 chicks! That is an entertaining story in itself.
No joy here either. The car people decided (after not calling me all day) that they should continue to keep my poor lonely Forester until tomorrow. For perfectly good reason, true, and not for anything wrong whatsoever. But I want my car!
OK so 3 little old ladies sitting on a park bench. A flasher walks up to the first one, flings open his jacket, and she has a stroke. He walks up to the second one, flings open his jacket, and the second one has a stroke. He walks to the last little old lady and flings open his jacket, but her little arms are too short to reach.
Ah, Zul. hope all your zituations are beaten into submission, er, handled with Q's usual skill.
I got nothin' myself.
well, Q-eyQ. you sure entertained me today with your snappy comeback to a certain request for a certain Boss.
bees? who can say with bees?
meanwhile, you made me laugh out loud today with your forward. so i thank you. very muchly.
and now we drive up the pacific coast highway....
Drew leaving soon for Michael Jackson (who entertaining is that!?) so we are having a mini-vacation...photos oh so soon. plus ones of Kylie in her favorite box. Batman is no longer "stopped up" but boy was that drama around the house for a while. not very happy kitty cat when he can't go...
Cabal better?
I hate to be saccharine, but I have has a lovely time since last Saturday. (My birthday was yesterday, and the celebrating started Saturday). Everything has made me quite happy. I even got the delightful pleasure of getting a picture with your boss Monday morning. *glee* There has only been one REALLY wrong thing with it all, but that would totally ruin my saccharine outlook right now. :-)
I sometimes wonder if my chickens will do this to me seeing as they have no stingers like bees do
http://tinyurl.com/dn6ymk
Oh, and we have a lovely new rule at work (supposedly due to swine flu): we must report at all times whether we are in the building or not.
It is not yet clear what the parameters will be: gone across the street for a sandwich? Gone to the library for half an hour? Stepped out to the mailbox?
Ceciley - Happy Late birthday!
Phiala - is your car in ahoots with q's bees, d'you think? Maybe tomorrow...
Thank you Marjorie!
Or Cahoots, of course. Clearly I dhould be in bed. My brain has already gone to sleep.
Marjorie, as long as that doesn't mean that my car will be full of grouchy Russian bees tomorrow...
I had a pretty rubbish work day just trying to make sure our voluntary organisations get their grant payments next week! But I just booked tickets for advance screening of Coraline 3D on Saturday :o) That's a happy story. And my friend at work got a stern ticking off for thinking it was a Tim Burton movie!
Hope you get a rest this evening, sounds like you've had a hectic day! As for Desert Island Discs, I'd go for Josh Ritter - The Animal Years; Anais Mitchell - Hymns for the Exiled; The Shins - Oh Inverted World; Tori Amos - Under the Pink; and errrm one more...ooh maybe Flight of the Conchords for some comic relief!
maybe the bees will steal your car to drive themselves to thier new home?
been a reader for some time but never commented but when the title of the post is one of my favorite ghostbusters quotes I have to speak up!
Top Five Desert CDs:
Pulse (2 discs) - Pink Floyd
Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (2 discs) - Smashing Pumpkins
Watermark - Enya
To be fair, my day wasn't great. I work IT and spent the day being blamed for a program not working that I have absolutely nothing to do with and no power to fix.
On the plus side, MTV's The State is coming out on DVD this Summer, and ever since about 1993 I've been a huge fan of it, so I'm excited. If you're unfamiliar, it's a sketch comedy show by the guys who now make Reno 911 and their friends. It makes no sense, is full of stupid humor, should not be watched with your brain turned on, and is pure genius.
So, that's my thoughts right now. I'm also listening to Intelligence Squared US debates, which are entertaining if you're into intellectual debates on various topics (if you like NPR, you might like them).
Hellie, sorry you had a bad day. have fun on sturday - you'll love it
Thanks Marjorie - I'm really excited :o)
Better not be too scary though, we watched Blade last night and I dreamed of milky white decapitated hands attacking me!!
Fiends! You so rock. Reading now.
OSS, thanks for printing that out for others, but no need for me. That is my FIRST fav of Archie and Mehitabel, and I love every last one. Know it by heart I do. Thanks for the reminder...
Morrica, welcome. Who knew?? Did you sell?
Jane, I do know about Poop news!
Taragl, a Baby cool! And I like chickens, but 35????
Cecily, very funny!
Phwar. Been a long time since I did top 5 only, but here's a try, then:
(in no order)
Automatic for the People -- REM
Sleepless -- Kate Rusby
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots -- The Flaming Lips
Uncommon Ritual -- Edgar Meyer with Bela Fleck and Mike Marshall
Master of Puppets -- Metallica
Kitty, you don't know half of it. Got a bit told down for one line of my letter (correctly), but it turned out to be a good thing I sent it. All well. HAve some FUN!
Yeah on Cecily seeing the Boss, and happy for your happy!
Very funny Tamidon. Does everyone have chickens but me? I would like some weird ones...
Hi Jonathon! Glad to help...I so feel like that today.
Tim, don't know most of those (or Hellies either.) this is great for new music...
Did I say you guys are the BEST??????????
As a fellow Thea Gilmore lover I can especially recommend Anais Mitchell!
Well of course we are. :D
Poor exhausted Q! Sounds a successful day's work. Ya done good.
Cecily! Hee hee! That's just filthy. Excellent.
I have been listening to drilling noises and trying to find the gentlest way of telling a workshopper that you don't actually have to try to sound like the Old Testament when retelling a story from it.
Also that fiction tends to be written in scenes.
And that Characters are People: they have inner lives, and more importantly, they get up and do stuff. It sounds simple enough but always seems to be the hardest concept to grasp. Sure, they'll tell you all about Beautiful Esmerelda in the midnight gown with the sparkling sapphire eyes and the flowing mane of raven hair and the lips like red red cherries and the heart that aches like burning, or burns like aching, for no reason in particular-- for pages and pages. But they won't put her in a scene or give her dialogue. She just stands around, remembering, in wistful summary, everything that happened up to the point of standing there. Ay yi yi.
Nobody's actually writing about Esmerelda. I made that part up by way of example. She's all yours, if you want her. Her boyfriend, who does not appear anywhere but in summary flashback, is called Fabio. Have at them.
ticky box! ((hugs))
Oh for heaven's sake I didn't tick the thing. Thanks, Ticia!
Jess...I have what one might call a mind in the gutter...at all times....well most times, not when tending to the kids.
Circus father got the circus girl to class. I was three minutes late. Sigh. I guess I am not the Keymaster today.
Jess - indeed, as a reader of fiction written by young adults (high school students) I read a lot of those stories about Esmeralda of the Raven Locks and her cousins/brothers/extended family who DO nothing. Hard to read and stay positive.
I guess I'm a bit of a grump, since my favorite is "the cheerful cricket".
For your additional amusement, I've sent a picture to your gmail. I don't think I should post it online, copyright wise.
Another consequence of day not going as planned: It is raining, and I have neither umbrella nor jacket. And must walk to next destination.
I deeply love that archy poem Here's a bit of Mehitabel:
well boss
mehitabel the cat
has reappeared in her old
haunts with a
flock of kittens
three of them this time
archy she says to me
yesterday
the life of a female
artist is continually
hampered what in hell
have i done to deserve
all these kittens
i look back on my life
and it seems to me to be
just one damned kitten
after another
i am a dancer archy
and my only prayer
is to be allowed
to give my best to my art
but just as i feel
that i am succeeding
in my life work
along comes another batch
of these damned kittens
it is not archy
that i am shy on mother love
god knows i care for
the sweet little things
curse them
but am i never to be allowed
to live my own life... .
I have often felt that life was just one damned kitten after another, but usually only the metaphorical sort.
*hugs to Q and hellie and anyone else in need

Bonjour! Comment ca va? (Deire avec twitter)
I've been slacking in reading posts and comments lately, because I didn't take my laptop on my trip. Not much I can say about it publicly ;-) Had a great time, but missed all of you and the chatter!
Q, are you floating 5 feet above the covers, too??
i make a rule never to get involved wiht possessed people, actually, it's more of a guideline
No jokes, but I am postponing the e-mail I was about to send. Phew! Anything to lighten your load.
Best,
Billy
Wow am I behind or what!
Hope the busy day has gone well Q! I have nothing all that entertaining to add to the mix here but I certainly am enjoying reading!
My day (week) is/has been a bit crazy too. I think I might make it through.
When I was very very young my mother decided we should raise chickens and ordered many many many of them. I do not recall this being a successful endeavor but I do remember liking all the cute fuzzy chicks!
What about top 5 books? (I'm not that much of a music person)

Top five books are good too, Adri!
Loveing this, and the Don Marquis especially...
Here's one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time - it's a Twitter from someone to Our Zul
"Out of interest, what do you do when your boss is on the road? Does he leave a list of jobs? Just curious!"
Nah, she sits on her throne, reading dime novels, and eating chocolates.
I'm pretty sure Q didn't take time to answer that.
fine :( but i'm going to pout because one of the songs onthe greatest hits isn't available on any other album . *hissy fit*

So these two pigs are standing around in the mud.
"Man, I'm worried about this swine flu," said one, "you?"
"I'm not worried!', said the other, "Yo soy una helicopter!"
i'll be the barefoot hippie goth all dressed in black burning candles, watching star trek while writing bad poetry on the dark side of the island.
I wrote about my day on my blog. I don't think I can go through it again. :)
Oh, and the good news. 9 years ago, my mother had a recurrance of cancer. (No, that's not the good news.) (Sheesh, you ghouls.) Some good friends gave her a shamrock plant for St. Patrick's day. I inherited it when she died. (Still not the good news.)
I've been tending it, kinda, over the years, repotting it when it seemed root bound, watering it when it drooped, feeding it when it looked like hungry. Well, last weekend, I decided to repot it again. Bigger pot - more room. I got new dirt, water, plant food, and did the deed.
All the leaves immediately drooped and turned yellow and I knew I killed it, killed it dead - the last link with Ma, and I distroyed it.
(OK - Now the good news)
IT'S ALIVE!!!! Look - little baby shoots coming up. I didn't kill it dead - I just helped it get rid of the old growth, so the new can come through. I'm doing my happy thankful dance.
You can dance if you want to.
Terry Pratchett told a joke that reminds me of Cecily's - Guy comes into a bar with an alligator under his arm, puts the gator on the bar, sticks his member in the animal's mouth and hits it really hard on the head. He ungrits his teeth (okay, I'm paraphrasing here...) and asks if anyone else in the bar is tough enough to give it a try. After some silence, a little old lady at the end of the bar says, "I'll try it if you don't hit me so hard."
And I've had a pooey day/week/whatever as well. Undefined pooeyness. I transplanted some shamrocks this week, too (well, they're purple oxalis - really pretty.) They're droopy but since I didn't have so much emotion invested in them I'm certain they'll perk up soon. Now thaat was a student-worthy sentence.
5 albums:
American Idiot - Green Day
Viva la Vida - Coldplay
Italian Concerti grossi (I know, it's sort of greatest hits)
Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads
Up to Here - The Tragically Hip
Man, am I going to be cranky on that island without my iPod!
Must nom more chocolate - brb.
I offer you my favorite reference question ever:
Are unicorns considered horses or ponies?
(asked by a third grader. :o) )
My 2nd favorite reference question:
How many molecules of water are in a cup?
(asked by a scientist)
This comment has been removed by the author.
Okay, here's a job ALMOST as interesting as Lorraine's:
http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=884
I tried to post a linky and it looked like one, but it was teh fail.
My cranky old desktop hates me (laptop is dead, we hope temporarily) and eats my posts. Sigh.
GRACE!!!!! How lovely to hear from you, even if from your cranky old desktop.
Trying again -- Fablo, you remain ever Fabulous and ever ever the Queen. I can't imagine how you do so much with humour and kindness and a few NOs. Sorry you are having a tough day!
Desert islands discs? Hmmm... the Pretenders that had "Tattooed Love Boys" on it, Stones one that had "Gimme Shelter", Umbrella Tree's "The Church and the Hospital", Collin Wade Monk's "Winky Groover Cookie Prim," and Murray Perahia's "Goldberg's Variations."
Singles run the gamet from AC/DC's Back in Black to the aforementioned Gimme Shelter to Julie London's Cry Me a River to Little Girl and the Dreadful Snake by Bill Monroe to Youngest Apple by Umbrella Tree.
My day today? Well, one student was arrested for having a bad of marijuana in his pocket and one student was pulled from a PE class for the rest of the yeat due to leaving class early to go to the locker room bathroom to, ahem, entertain himself. Wow, I am just an effing stellar amazing teacher and case manager!!!!!! (sheesh -- rolling eyes at self)
Those pesky kids (shaking fist and cane.)
Hi Siri. I'm stumbling and screwing up on all fronts, and I can't even type anymore. But it is so nice to see you shout my name. :-)
BUt you are still here to share with the fiends, and that makse us happy.
I think you still have your sense of humor, too.....and I love you for that.
weeeel this day was sunny and i have something to celebrate, and please all join in.
*here* are the enchanted ceramic mugs and crystal champagne flutes and porcelain tea cups and bejeweled chalices. just tell your cup what you want in it (i recommend champagne or sparkling apple cider).
i am happy to say that hELL now belongs, lock, stock and housekeys, to an annoying little man from Quebec, and our connection to the eejit landlord is severed. we are resettled and happy about it.
skål, zum wohl, slainte, a votre sante, l'chaim, kampai!
now to ponder 5 albums. *sip* hmmm. Fluffy got me started... American Idiot is definitely one!! Peter Gabriel's Security. Vivaldi, preferably the St. Martin's in the Fields recording that includes the Opus 10 in B minor. BSG season 2 soundtrack. erm. only one more? ack. right we're only stuck on the desert island for a few months, right? I think, a Kate Wolf recording, not sure which one.
{{hugs}} and {{cheers}} to all. courage to our friends, and confusion to our foes.
GRACE! Siri is saying it well for us all.
Here is something that made me laugh yesterday. (Unfortunately right at my guy.) He was tired of all the Dr. Who discs I'd selected coming from the internet-mail rental service we have, rather than his listed items. Got on to his shows for a while, and now Torchwood, which I also put in there, is here. He said, well, at least it's not more Dr. Who. Hee hee. So, Torchwood for a bit this evening.
I'm going to have a hangover tomorrow, but here's me quaffing a large bejeweled chalice full of champagne for you, Na. May all your future homes be full of light and space and love.
Off to bed for me.
Five albums...hmmm...
1. Best of Leonard Cohen
2. Boats, Beaches, Bars and Ballads (Jimmy Buffet)
That's all I can think of so far!
These jokes remind me of this one:
Two little old ladies sitting on a bench at their retirement home. One of the old fellas comes running up, opens his raincoat, flashes them, and runs off.
The first little old lady says "What was that??"
The second one says "I don't know, but it needed ironing/"
This is an old New Orleans joke.
A man was walking down the street and came upon someone having a heart attack. He called 911 and told them, "I need an ambulance on the corner of Tchoupitoulas St (which we say "chop ah choo lahs") and Canal" and the dispatch says, "Can you spell that?" and the man says, "I'll call you back, I'm going to drag him to Magazine."
Today was brought to you by "Little Old Ladies and Penis Jokes!" Ask your doctor about little old lady/penis jokes. Little old lady/penis jokes can cause nausea and vomiting in certain people. Side effects can also include audible groaning or expulsion of liquids through the nasal passages.
You are all so funny and generous with the virtual champagne!
I will go to bed now and get rid of the headache and attempt to write what must be written tomorrow.
I can't worry down a list of 5, especially music..I like too many things. So I'll just tell my bad pirate joke:
A pirate walks into a bar with what appears to be a steering column sticking out of his bum.
The bartender says "What the heck IS that??" to which the pirate replies "Aaaarrrrrr, it's drivin' me nuts!"
BaDum Tish!
Oh, got here late. I hope it all settled out well today Quichie (er...Zul? Wha?)
Grace the Great- it's nearly year-end and the student populations are acting out all over the place. Son+ gets sooooo stressed every year from all the craziness around him (and the poor case managers look like they're gritting their teeth all day).
At the U we mearly had....a riot. Last weekend.
Good times.
Plus note, the art students are visiting me. They like to go up on our terrace patio to paint the river.
hahaha, drivin me nuts, that made my day.
i'm sorry many had a bad day. i'm doing staff reviews, it's getting easier, but it's still nerve wracking. i can't say it was a bad day, i'm just nervous, as this is my first shot at reviews.
Something that will cheer you up:
Go see Wolverine: Origins, it will cheer you up because it is the kind of movie you just sort of laugh at how ridiculous things are and then you just smile at the multiple scenes of shirtless Hugh Jackman. Also naked Hugh Jackman.
Now if naked Jackman isn't your cup of tea there's still plenty of senseless action fighting which is amusing for about an hour and then it's over. Hooray!
Good Morning Everyone. Welcome to May.
Hugs to all who had bad days and need hugs.
Na, is all the virtual champagne gone? No, I think there is a little left *raises glass*
Siri - Happy Dance - so glad your Mom's shamrock plant is alive.
Grace (waves, jumps up and down in excitement) Lovely to see you here again - sorry to hear about the kids, but thes things are not your fault. You rock, lady, don't you forget it.
PS. I am being followed by 'The Swine Flu' on Twitter. Do you think I should be worried?
also, if you want weird chicks, check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pELuSUzd--E&feature=related
They dye the chicks by injecting the embryos with food dyes. It's harmless and by the time they grow feathers it goes away.
Marjorie, plenty of champagne, of course, just talk to your cup. As it's morning there, might i recommend some orange juice to go with that?
how fun - i've stayed up too late, and get to see the european fiends waking. :) (natalaw's up, too, twittering i saw)
to add to the where's val? comment, we are missing a number of commenting fiends lately. :( jacqui, martha (i think it was, in estonia), tommy b, more i can't think of just now.
foo. i should sleep. i shall dream of Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper. and the kids can keep watching Dr Who with me but they are so not seeing Torchwood! bit warm in here, eh? right. to sleep. night-morning all.
I am still too sleepy to be remotely amusing (not being a total grouch is taking up all the effort) so I'll just hug you to sleep (hopefully you are in bed by now) and purr dreams into your mind.
'Night Na. Sweet Dreams
Lyndyn, any proper scientist should be able to figure out how many molecules per cup - that's an easy one. :) I _would_ have to look some things up.
Why does FF think figure is spelled wrong?? Looks okay to me...
Awake too early, so having dog-cat-bed-laptop!
Good Morning, Phiala.
Surely it would depend on which cup, and how full it is? (and whether it is holding plain water, or coffee, or tea...)
(Why yes, I am feeling pedantic - how could you tell?)
Am feeling unreasonably grumpy today, too. I blame the moon.
Marjorie, well yes, of course. I interpreted it as being that archaic US cooking measurement, the cup. Converting a measuring cup to 237 ml does make the calculations a whole lot easier. :) As for whether adding other ingredients changes the number of molecules: no, not as long as they're dissolved - volume doesn't change, just total mass.
(Well, except in the weird cases where volume _decreases_...)
But temperature could be very important. I think I'd specify 4C if I were doing the problem.
Oh, and I'm sorry you're grumpy! I prescribe tea, warm rumbly cats, and extra naps.
Happy May Day Fiendlings!
Phiala - I think - but I'm not sure that the scientists might have been trying to solve a bet. (We get a lot of bar bets - but not so many lab bets!)
I was able to find out how many molecules of water in a square ml (or something likethat - it has been a while) and they were happy as pie saying they could take it from there.
I think I told the little kid with the unicorn question that unicorns were neither horses/ponies.
I am not sure that is the right answer, though!
Q, I sympathize! :-(
As I was ready to leave work (after a hectic day of detail chasing), I get a call from the local Marriott. They say may credit card has been decline and want to know how I'm going to pay for the 3 rooms I reserved.
It took me a moment to realize that they must be talking about that rooms I reserved for the XYZ family. No, those rooms have credit cards attached. She's talking about my rooms. Ugh!
So, after an hour of phone calls, waiting around at work, etc., they finally got it all sorted out. Can you imagine paying upwards of $3,000 on rooms you never stayed in? ugh! Turns out the agent double booked the rooms. Thankfully, the Marriott sorted it out.
I think you deserve a long hot bath with whatever drink you enjoy most, music, and lots o' bubbles. Then you should go sit on the couch and veg and play feather toys with the kitties. :-)
P.S. The pollen is out in force today. I sound like Darth Vader everytime I breath.
Poor Erin! Erin go aaargh. How awful. Glad they sorted it out in the end!
Hello, new persons. :)
Jamm, my granddad used to bring my mom and her sister used to get a few little colored chicks like that at Easter-- and a few weeks later, they'd "go back to the farm," erm. I presume he wasn't just saying that, because they'd have been too little to, erm, shrinkwrap and stack in the freezer section.
Oh, if only there really were such things as enchanted ceramic mugs. I've got a regular mug with tea in, and I'm wishing it would turn into coffee. But no. There is no coffee magic. And the coffee pot is in the dishwasher.
It just feels weird when the morning doesn't involve bean-grinding. I like the bean-grinding part.
As long as we're wishing for enchanted mugs... Can I have one that is so completely (110%) leakproof that conservation would let me have coffee at my desk? Some sort of straw mechanism might be necessary, but that would be a small price to pay.
Oh - speaking of coffee and mugs and leaks...can anyone tell me a really GOOD travel mug? I keep buying them and they all suck!
Lyndyn, I totally agree! I can't find one either.
Can't help with spill-proof coffee - I suppose you could try eating chocolate-coated coffee beans for that liquid-free caffiene hit.
I'm guessing the bees didn't come today. It's starting to feel like 'Waiting for Godot' "they should be here"..
Alas, no food allowed either. The plus side it that these rules mean I actually have to take get-away-from-my-desk breaks once in a while.
I don't know what qualifies your travel cups for suckage, but I have a stainless steel mini-thermos. It has a spill-resistant top for drinking out of, and a screw cap that goes over that for complete spill-proofing. Keeps coffee hot for ages. It isn't very large, and you could easily lose the screw cap, but it would still be usable afterwards. Oh, and it's narrow enough to fit a standard cup holder.
I don't remember who makes it, but can look when I get home.
Phiala - that sounds good! I bought a thermos brand coffee mug - but it just had a lid that pushed down instead of screwing down. I was actually relieved when I drove off with it sitting on the top of the car! It was spendy, too - about 17 bucks. Grrrr...
OSS - are you a preservation librarian? (I prob. missed when you said...or I've forgotten...for LO! the mind does go first.)
Lyndyn - Actually I'm a cataloger at the Newberry. Not everything we have is rare, but enough of it is that the conservation rules are especially strict. They are good rules, and it is a good idea to leave the desk once in a while, but I really do miss having coffee or tea at hand all the time.
Bees get packed Monday, and are shipping Tuesday. I remain puzzeled as to why we got a note saying they shipped this week, but Beekeepers are a strange lot.
Big news tho today! I have a Day Off, for the most part! Arranged Dog Care and all I have to do is keep watch on e-mails and phone, but other than that, it's all about ME!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, looking at e-mail. Not entirely off. But shouldn't take more than an hour.
Q, wow! Good for you! I hope you enjoy it in some relaxing way that is nonetheless not too far from phones. :)
Hooray for a day off!
We just discovered that there used to be a fireplace in the guest room. We can see where the hole used to be, and there's a concrete hearth under the carpet. Ah, archaeology.
Dad wants to open it back up and restore it. Erm... :P
Morning. It is. Really.
Hi, Morrica, Jonathan Zero, Drysil, MrBillyBones, and Amanda Page! Find your requisite white jacket and personalization tools, and have at it!
::sniff::
Spicy, SPIcy, SPICY!!!
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
well hello newfies (new + friends, took me all morning to think of that one)
morning and goodbye, today i finish up all of the staff reviews except for the one that is slightly less glowing. tuesday i will be a quivering mess for that one.
Jess, I don't know all the ins and outs of the operation/restoration...but I'm with your dad.
Off to take DD2 to the doctor for wellness check-up. :)
Kindergarten Round-up is next week!
It would be kind of cool. Won't be able to put furniture against that wall any more, though. And the fireplace wouldn't be functional-- the chimney's been blocked off. I'd have to settle for prettying it up with candles and bowls of potpourri.
i'm kind of angry right now. i gave boy the weekend for fiend gathering yonks ago and he didn't properly request it off. now someone else in his department is taking a long time off during that time.
vampi go argh :(
so... are there any room sharers still out there?
Enjoy your day off Quiche you deserve it!
I'm starting my long weekend now- taking home a couple of documents about procurement, but in my heart I know they so aren't going to get read!
Happy May Day everyone, enjoy searching for coffee mugs, excavating fireplaces, frolicking around maypoles, whatever the weekend may offer!
heh, heh. Vampi go arrgh! Nice - it complements the stabby phraseology.
I have a Starbucks travel mug that does NOT leak. I call it Edward because it's white and sparkly. They go for about $15, and have a flip-up top and a nice, grippy handle. I saw a gold one at SB last week and am thinking about getting it. I don't know what it would be named.
Vampi - may be able to house you as well.. Giant suite... Let me check.
Busy work. Too focused. Love you all.
Wow, Lorraine, a day off! I was kinda wondering if you ever had any. Enjoy!
Yay for days off. And for knowing where the Bees are.
It's gone 5 here, so I'm heading home. It's been a very long day. One VERY annoying person to deal with. Came to the conclusion that even allowing for me being in a snappy grumpy mood said person would have been very annoying even to an objective person.
(She has known X since Monday. She Decided at mid-day today that X mean she wants to change everything and that Court hearing listed on Tuesday cannot go ahead(bearing in mind it is a bank holiday monday so today is the last day anything can be changed) I have spent much of yestaerday and today prepping for Court Hearing on Tuesday, BTW.. Then she was phoning at 15 minute intervals to chase me up about whether I had agreed it yet (me agreeing it means I needed to liase with 3 other people, all of whom are very busy and can't respond instantly, and whom I have to speak to in the right order)
Happily I have an excellent secretary. She took the calls so I didn't have to scream at them down the phone. (that would be unporfessional, however well deserved.)
I'm rambling. Sorry.
Very glad to hear you may get some respite, Q. You deserve it!
I don't think I know any jokes that I can tell here. But here is one of my favorite motivational posters.
It is sunny here and I need to write but I do believe a long walk is in my future.
Albums:
1. The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
2. The Cardigans - First Band on the Moon
3. Tracy Bonham - The Burdens of Being Upright
4. Stephen Sondheim - Into the Woods, Original Broadway Cast
5. It's too hard to choose the last. :) Something with Itzhak Perlman.
just lol. i found reasonable airfare around $200, but it is going to take me over 8 hours to get there. i saw one that was 7 hours.
someone is going to be a cranky vamp.
Gayle, Love that link!
Hurray for almost off days!
And Hurray for fiends hooking up on room sharing! It seems like everyone is working things out. If not drop me a note and I'll see if I can help at all.
Well, I will not be getting the grant I was working on in this round. Really that is okay. The work I am doing to get the proposal done will be useful for several other things and the next round of this grant in the fall.
We are doing another writing retreat this weekend. Yeah!
Aleta, yes, the Fiends are ever resourceful. I've been meaning to email you that OSS and I are roomies, but, well, now EVERYONE knows. :)
I think my grant will go in - second one this spring (coPI on both). I briefly contemplated writing a third as PI, but quickly realized that was insane, and the project would be better next year anyway.
Well, I see I'm not alone in my two crazy, jangled days!
Chicken contribution #1 ...many, many years ago, before my parents married each other, my Dad retired to Florida to raise chickens...though family lore suggests he retired to FLA to drink. For some number of years, he threw very large, well-oiled New Year's Eve parties. Those who spent the night were served fried eggs the next morning, with yolks of green, purple, red and blue.
Chicken contribution #2...We had some chickens, a few years ago. I got Araucanas, for the colored eggs, and a pair of Silkie chicks. Turned out one of the Silkies was a rooster. About 18 inches high when full grown, and full of piss and vinegar. He wouldn't bother the women, but he'd try to spur my husband, son and friend who was also living here. A common dinner table conversation was..."what I'd like to do to that rooster" and it would quickly degenerate into pretty violent suggestions.
So I come home one day to find the rooster has been hit by a car and is lying in our neighbor's yard. DD and I get a towel, go pick him up...he's breathing, scraped, has lost enough feathers to stuff a sampler...but no obvious internal injuries or broken bones. There is rejoicing amongst the men at dinner.
Now I don't take chickens to the vet....so,I put him in the coop, fully expecting that I will have to rescue him from attack. Nope. Those hens huddled up against him, and there he stayed for a week...after a week he slowly emerged, and croaked "cocka" hoarsely...and within a month he was again the terror of the menfolk.
Finally had to send him to a home for abandoned and unwanted roosters....
I'm thinking about chickens again... so much fun to watch.
Back to the rat race... love to all
Barbara Kingsolver had some interesting comments about chickens in her book, Animal, Vegetable Miracle.
Seemed similar to the rooster story (good story!).
Chickens are great company. I also like Guinea fowl, and have heard they're great to keep around for pest management (I believe they eat lots of bugs that would otherwise terrorize one's garden patch).
Just caught up with the last couple of day's comments, y'all have been chatty fiends!
Gayle, you're a Cardies fan? Went to see A Camp on Wednesday night, love me some Nina! She's such an amazing performer, and a voice to die for.
Sympathies for those dealing with crazy students/clients, I've had my share of chemically imbalanced/socially deranged customers this week, plus the continuing saga of the Bolivian. I actually think it's easier when all the madness is concentrated because you have to just stand back and laugh; as my friend quite rightly pointed out, I'd be bored if life were dull.
Jokes? I can only ever remember random bits of them, half of the punchline at best (there was a good one about a fraid knot), though I did like the SQL joke someone here tweeted during the week, the techie in me still lives!
Top five listening this week:
Boxer - The National
Rotten Apples (disc 1) - Smashing Pumpkins
Cardigans homemade mix
The Good, The Bad & the Queen
The World Is Saved - Stina Nordenstam
Top five reading this week:
Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned - Wells Tower (home for the evening)
Waterland - Graham Swift (on the train)
The House of Special Purpose - John Boyne (BBC Book @ Bedtime)
The Innocent - Ian McEwan (so excited to get a 2nd hand copy in)
H Ramsden's An Essential Course in Modern Spanish (see re: Bolivian above)
Hope you're enjoying your day mostly-off, Queen Q.
<3 a camp and nina. i'd be interested to know which songs you put on that custom compliation :)
Thank you for all the kind words, everybody, and YAY to Q for an almost day off!! How fun.
Beez, ah yes, you so know what I'm talking about! I can imagine that it is stressful for Son+.
Aaannnddd today, I had a student on my caseload who is already on a behavior plan, already used up his 10-days suspension, already had multiple meetings with mother who doesn't think a functional behavior assessment is necessary and who thinks that we are bumbling idiots, get caught looking at porno in the library computer lab. The principal kept the pictures up and showed the mom when she arrived, and truly I thought the woman was gonna stroke out. My days are so exciting and interesting! And my caseload is making me notorious, uh, I mean, famous!! :-)
oerk?neorb gglb sIa ggggggrrrrr
Did I break blogger?
Vampi, I have heard of these so-called "play lists" that some people with ears create however I would not be one of the list-makers. It's a random bunch of toons from all their albums, great driving music.
Blogger's being *really* weird
Drove around today and went to garage sales in bizzare small towns. Way fun!!!!!
Majorally scored. Doing new post now. Why am I commenting like I am on Twitter?
Bwains - not so spicy today. Aaargh.
Printing newsletter for snail-mailing and having In-House Tech Support squarsh the .pdf for emailing - I don't have the full Adobe suite on my Mac.
House exterior painted, check handed over, rental company sent packing ("No -not until tomorrow morning!")
Just need to email Temple youth-groupers to get a meeting going. Then maybe I'll have me a martini!
I will not have my Forester until Monday. *pout* And I'm going camping this weekend!! *grumble* But... this is because they are fixing some things for me for free, so it's hard to really be upset (except that they should have done this BEFORE I bought it).
Today I submitted TWO papers. One of those was the Paper from Hell. I hope the journal reviewers like it, but either way it is off my desk for several months.
I came home and decapitated dandelions, and am now relaxing in the courtyard with a margarita and some spicy Thai potato chips.
If only I could skip the camping trip...
New Post up!!!!!!!
Fluffy, I totally know that joke, but as a blonde joke. I cold probably write a book with all the blonde jokes I know.
