Vampi - I like the look of thatskirt - and so glad to hear you no longe have gangrenous-looking hands - I can see that that could put people off...

200 comments on a one-line post. I am impressed. (while very much hoping that you will be feeling well enough, and not-buried-in-work enough, to come out and play with us soon, Q!

I got into Rare Book School this year! Come August, I get to spend a week learning about collational formula until my brain melts and dribbles out of my ears. Then try to sleep in a tiny un-air conditioned room during the hot, muggy Virginia nights. And yes, I am truly thrilled to do so.

Now I need to set aside the leisure reading so I can get through the advance reading list.

If you're curious about my preference for the un-air conditioned room, you can see why here:

Happy dance!

Lovely place but what type of school is this? (if it is one at all) What does one learn there? Care for old books?

At 08:19 Blogger Jess said...

Oh oh Vampi. I read that as I'm off to play with my boy's sprouts. Heh. Snicker. F'nar.

(Have I been hanging round Twitter too long?)

That's all I've got: so
why prolong the suffering
with rubbish haiku?

It's a institute hosted by the University of Virginia, though independent of it. They offer dozens of week-long classes on the history of books and printing. Classes are small and getting into one is competitive, so I've been on tenterhooks waiting to hear if I got in.

At 08:25 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Sounds great, OSS. Congratulations on making the list.

At 08:27 Blogger Lyndyn said...

Yay OSS! Congratulations - it sounds so cool!!

At 08:33 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Lyndyn - You'll appreciate this... when I took History of the Book, we got to operate a handpress one afternoon!

At 08:38 Blogger Lyndyn said...

OSS: lol...that's funny...I have a book press in the back of my car even as we speak!

At 08:41 Blogger Lyndyn said...

I've been looking for a place to take letterpress printing classes around here, but no luck...

At 08:43 Blogger vampi said...

jess, i did realize hat sounded a bit wrong. sprouts!oh oss those pictures were awesome.

whee we are a chatty bunch.

At 09:05 Blogger Na said...

congrats OSS! that sounds quite interesting.

hee, i read that "sprouts" sentence the same way Jess did, reread it...

i know i've mentioned the time i dyed my hair magenta/fuschia with manic panic (which clashed horribly with the neon orange vest and helmet i had to wear at work then). i had longish hair at the time, and kept flipping it around as i combed in the color. very, very late in the game i realized there were pink splots ALL over the bathroom. while cleaning up that mess, i resorted to something with bleach for the spots on tile grout, that in turn got splots on my clothes, which after i washed 'em had little bleach spots/holes all over. jam-packed Learning Experience.

At 09:14 Blogger Lyndyn said...

LOL, Na...I've done that, too...but with boring old brown hair dye.

At 09:47 Blogger Marjorie said...

Congratulations, OSS - sounds fascinating.

Also - for those not on Twitter - Article about Diana Wynne Jones who is one of my most favouritest authors ever, but sadly under sppreciated.

(Boss likes her too - just saw his tweet - he said - "Diana Wynne Jones is the best. The very best. Honest. Finally an article that says so too: http://bit.ly/tjiHH"

I couldn't agree more (well, I might say one of the very best...)

Sadly I can't go to the conference in Bristol becasue it's while I'm in the USA. How is that for bad scheduling?

At 09:57 Blogger Na said...

Speaking of the under-appreciated, I believe the colour brown is one. ;)

Also, having a kitchen now completely free of boxes. I celebrate by cracking open a new bottle of San Pellegrino. La vida loca, baby!

At 10:10 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Na - You are way ahead of me, and I moved well before you did. Should probably add "unpack more" to weekend list...

Definitely celebrate!

At 10:21 Blogger Na said...

Well, in the classic the-good-news-is-the-bad-news way, I have little work in at the moment.

And so far it's just the kitchen and the bathroom that are clear. Plenty o' stuff piled everywhere else, but I started to get some things hung up on the walls last night. We did get a Saucers print, which needs framin'. I'll have to save a spot for that.

What a lovely Diana Wynne Jones article. I love her work. I think of her as coming out of that lovely whimsical British fantasy tradition of Nesbit, CS Lewis, and even Dorothy Sayers (though the last should be wimsical.) Ducking and running....b3wareofsheep

And love and health to our fearless leader...

At 11:19 Blogger dabbler said...

I love being able to make an awful literary pun and have it met with a groan, rather than a blank stare. Thanks, OSS...you made my day! :-)

Hello All! Just popping on to wave, Feeling more human and will do you a proper post tomorrow. Gig tonight, which needless to say I am NOT looking forward to...

At 11:43 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Oh crumbs! Is it wise to go?

At 11:50 Blogger Jess said...

There she is! Hello! \o/

Hope you feel a bit better when Gig Time comes. No fun to play through a fog of Yuck. Though I don't doubt you will rock in any case.

At 12:15 Blogger Marjorie said...

Dabbler - very punny.

(Waves wildly back at Q) Glad you are beginning to feel better, but sorry you have a gig when you are not feeling well

At 12:19 Blogger vampi said...

mistress hath spoke!

much wishes for rock tonight.

i think i bught skirts slightly too big. this place must run a bit big. i'm having fun swishing through the office. had to wear heals as the silver skirt is longer than the black skirt.

At 12:23 Blogger dabbler said...

Glad you're getting better, Q. Maybe rock will help...carry you away, ya know...

At 12:43 Blogger vampi said...

Dabbler, that's getting dangeruosly close to styx, and i don't think we want to go there.

At 13:35 Blogger AletaMay said...

At 13:37 Blogger Ani said...

Happy weekend everyone!

At 14:22 Blogger Na said...

Is it Friday? YES!

Glad you're on the upswing, Q, hope the gig brings goodness to you this evening.

Brainwise, I feel like I've been underwater all week. But we're done moving, the last installation thing happened today, seems to be winding down and I can actually contemplate doing fun things, things I don't have to do. Except Star Trek. I have to see that. ;) I was antsy to see it before all the raving began, so venturing out for it will be my treat this mama's day weekend.

At 15:41 Blogger Jane said...

Hey Q, glad you're feeling better. you were gone for so long...

Dabbler, know what you mean - not fun to make any kind of allusion to literature (whether humor or not) and get only a blank look in return. And those things *never* explain well.

At 17:30 Blogger Fluffy said...

Fluffy, reporting for Weekend Duty! Brain dead, ma'am!

Got wrist in brace (wth did I do to it yesterday??...) Need to get that carpal tunnel surgery done.

Offspring and I are arriving Thursday afternoon for fiendishness. We want to get a head start on this business. I hesitate to ask - anyone want to go to the mmm...

MALL?

I am so ashamed.

At 17:54 Blogger vampi said...

i think i need a bigger ball, i feel too low at my desk. i think i will practice sitting onthe ball at home and now leaning on desk
maybe that will help.

At 17:56 Blogger Siri said...

Glad to read you Q.

Congrats, OSS - glad you can do what you love.

This week is over. Thank Fod.

Oh - I'm looking for a word. A pair of us have been using "Oy" to describe our current work lives. It isn't good enough, since it really means "woe", not "good grief are you kidding me about this no I can't answer your one more question or take on one more task or finish that by the end of the day you gravy sucking pig." So, I need one word that means all that. Any language, but remember this is a PG site....

I know the fiends can help

At 18:00 Blogger Phiala said...

Oh Siri, I need that too. But it must also have connotations of "How can you think that was a remotely appropriate thing to say/ask/do, you flaming nutjob?"

I am home, recovering from my day with a bottle of Chilean red wine so aptly labeled "Royal Bitch".

At 18:02 Blogger Fluffy said...

In Nueva York they say, "Don't ask!"

Um, "up to my (insert [in]appropriate body part here) in alligators."

Comebacks, though. Hmmmm.

"I'm sorry, but Federal Law strictly prohibits that."

At 18:26 Blogger Fluffy said...

i kilt the thred

At 18:26 Blogger Phiala said...

Fluffy, nice ones! Except I can't use that last - I work for the US government, and my boss seems to think that he knows what Federal regs cover.

(even the parts that aren't actually legal)

At 18:29 Blogger gaypet said...

Siri; "Oy" really must, in these cases, be paired with "Vey" or "Gevalt". ;)

At 18:32 Blogger gaypet said...

I have not the memory for the details but just keep in mind that I am happy to do any Airport runs needed in June. BTW.

At 18:40 Blogger gaypet said...

Phiala: I think you need, "Oy vey, what a mashugana!" Not one word, I know. But satisfying no-the-less.

At 19:02 Blogger vampi said...

oy + vey is very versitle. it has wtf, guilt, burden, pain, and dread all wrapped up in 2 syllables

At 19:02 Blogger Dragonsally said...

OSS, congrats on getting in to the course and oh, what a building.

Vampi - don't put those heels throught the ball, or the desk really will be too high

And YAH (Kermit dance) Q is up and talking again.

I shall think upon an appropriate word for ye Siri and Phiala

At 19:07 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Oh, and are all Cal Fiends safe from fires?
We don't need anymore Fiends threatened by angry nature

At 19:28 Blogger Siri said...

Fiends - off to the hospital to see BFF who is without her gall bladder, but something is amiss - they are keeping her over night - send the good vibes.

(No terminal stuff here - just slight complications, which she didn't expect. - I'll fill you in when I get home.)

At 19:32 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Hugs for your friend Siri, and for you because I just know you'll be worried

At 20:07 Blogger Chantrelle said...

Hugs Siri!!

Vampi - I've got an 85 cm ball. The people almost wouldn't sell it to me telling me that it was too big for my height (5'9") but it's a good desk height. You also should be sort of leaning forward to put the weight on your feet and not sitting directly on your lower back/butt area.

Just ordered Indian food to be delivered. I just found out the only good Indian food in town actually delivers now! Woohoo!!

hope our queen bee survives the show tonight :(

At 20:10 Blogger Jess said...

Siri - what about something like n'raagh? That suits me in such circumstances, and sounds vaguely like it might be Klingon.

Hmm. You know, Fluff, Mr. Jess said he'd be interested in going to That Mall just so he could tell the folks back home he'd been there. Just figures that he'd want to go the one place I don't. Can I deny him? He's thinking about citizenship. I think the Mall of America might actually be on the test.

Any news of the gig? Hope it's going well!

At 20:12 Blogger Adri said...

Thinking good thoughts for your friend, Siri!

And for Q's gig!

At 20:19 Blogger vampi said...

i could be amiable for a brief visit to the mall. i'm not really a shopping person, but it does have a uniqueness that probably shouldn't be missed.

besides i'll need to find some cheap shot glasses for the kids...i mean coworkers. i;m not sure they all know mn exists, let alone where it is on the map. lol!

At 21:13 Blogger Ticia said...

Hello wonderful fiends! Work is done. I excercised. Now for Thai food.

A maniacal laugh escaped my lips when The Mall came up. I am the mother of a 16 year girl. If I never step foot in a mall again, it will be too soon. You all enjoy yourselves!

Quiche -I'm sending restorative thoughts to boost your flagging energy, Rock on!

Siri - Positive healing thoughts go out to your friend. And you, to soothe your worried heart..

Anyone else need some positive mojo? I'm throwing armfuls of sparkling fairydust into the atmosphere. It will drift down and over you, coating you with a fine layer of health and well-being.

At 21:16 Blogger Siri said...

Home again, home again, jiggity jig.

She's well cared for, but exceedingly sad because that's the hospital where her Dad (love of her life) died about 2 years ago. She couldn't stand to have husband and 2nd daughter there, because those were the faces always in the room when Dad was so sick. She also has pain, which doesn't help and when you think you are having outpatient surgery, and then don't, it's hard. She was going to sleep when I left, so that's good.

Jess - I believe I like n'raagh. Does it have an official meaning and pronunciation?

Sure is hard to love people - good thing the rewards are so great, and frequent.

At 21:22 Blogger Jess said...

Siri - Sounds like it's spelled, and means what it says. Say it. Loudly. You'll feel better.

No, you will! Honest.

Trust me! I'm from the internet! \o/

At 21:29 Blogger Siri said...

How well do you know anyone you meet on the Internet?

(See if anyone gets that obscure reference.)

It did make me feel better. Is adding more 'a's allowed?

At 00:06 Blogger vampi said...

ticia, i don't want to shop, i want to see the aquariumi worked in a record store in the mall. i really start to get all anxious if i shop for too long in a mall.

At 00:20 Blogger Na said...

LOL at n'raagh.

as for "oy" I was thinking, if you spell it "oi!" it's more of a punk thing and closer to Siri's needed expression if pronounced correctly. but shouting "oi! (that's with an i!)" prolly lessens its impact...

you could look intently at a person and growl. that should be good for months of gossip in cubicle-land.

dear fod, i am tired. hmmm. to sleep, if i must.

oh! and West Edmonton Mall purportedly is even bigger than That Mall. i remain unconvinced that this is really something for locals to brag about. we've been there for the movie theatre; there's a fire-breathing, roaring dragon above the main concession stand.

At 00:24 Blogger Chantrelle said...

And now good night. It is time to sleep. So we will sleep with our pet Zeep. Today is gone. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.

Night fiends!

At 00:35 Blogger ariandalen said...

Hello, fellow Fiends! It has been a long day. DH finally bought airline tickets today; we'll be in Friday afternoon and leaving Sunday afternoon.

Cool dragon, Na! I'm not sure we would ever get in to see a movie due to inability to get DDs away from dragon.

Sorry your friend has a complication, Siri. Hopefully she can go home tomorrow, er, today.

Hope the gig went well Ms. Fabulous!

Night.

At 10:03 Blogger Marjorie said...

Good mornig everyone! It souds as though there will be a fair few of us around on Thursday :-)

I'm not usually very keen on shopping - I have a tendency to get a bit -not claustrophobic, exactly, but a little like that. But perhapsa quick visit to see waht it's like. . Especially if they have a book shop or two.

At 10:16 Blogger spacedlaw said...

They only have one bookshop (a Borders if memory serves me well) but several kitchen gadgets shops (a least two).
Lorraine took me there last year. I don't go for malls but that was an interesting experience. And it was warm. And close to the airport.

At 10:19 Blogger Ticia said...

Well that aquarium DOES look interesting Vampi... I must admit.

At 10:24 Blogger Siri said...

MoA is more of an in-and-out place if you aren't a shopper - Look, I've been to the Mall Of America. Woo. Certainly those of us in the area can go there Thursday, and anyone who wants to see it before heading to Stillwater on Friday - sure, no problem. I don't plan to go there after Friday - Saturday and Sunday are for playing around the Inn. For me, at least.

Oh, and I had a thought - those who want to rent cars for Friday and after, has anyone checked to see if there are rental places in Stillwater, so you don't have to deal with it at the airport? Just a thought.

BFF is better - drained about 12oz of fluid out, and is going home today. She did say "I don't know how anyone who had this surgery could go back to work the next day." She's now staying home until Wednesday, which is a half-day at work for her. I haven't said, I told you so, but I told her so.

At 10:28 Blogger Jess said...

Oh! Is the plan to do That Mall on Thursday, then? Because we won;t get in till Friday. Oh dear. We'll miss That Mall. Oh deary dear. What a shame. However shall I cope.

Last workshop today! Woot! Then I'm free! To, erm, obsess about other things. And fret that I don't have any sort of Literary Gig to make me feel like I'm doing something other than bang my head against the keyboard in despair. Buh. :P

At 10:34 Blogger Siri said...

Now Jess - we can stop there after you get in at O:Dark:30 in the AM on Friday. I won't deprive you of MoA, especially after how hard you've been working.

Do I hear a n'aaargh?

At 10:41 Blogger Marjorie said...

For non-twitterers, Boss was on Jonathan Ross's radio show here this morning - and the BBC World Service on Thursday (starting at about 16 mins in). I think both will be availble online for 7 days.

At 13:47 Blogger Siri said...

Thanks for the link, M. I listened to JRoss as I waited for the washing machine repair guy. Took him about 10 minutes to fix the pully cable that slipped off. No huge cost - no new washer - just the one that has served me well. I am so relieved!

It's a good day - how's by all you silent fiends?

At 14:35 Blogger dabbler said...

Yay for easy repairs, Siri. This silent fiend spent the day cleaning up from a rather late, rather meadish, Beltane party last night, finding props for DD's Senior play (Once in A Lifetime)and is now sitting sleepily in front of keyboard catching up with fiends.

Next up, this evening, the thriller movie that DD's classmate made as his Senior Project, which the advisors wouldn't let him show, because it is too frightening. The email that went out for this special showing said "Please be advised that the film, which was So and So's senior project, contains violence, explicit language, and adult themes including murder, suicide, and insanity."

e did show the trailer at the project presentations, and it was quite amazing.... So even though I expect to be creeped out, I'm going.

At 14:36 Blogger Jess said...

N'RAAAGH!

slipping in during what is, to her, the middle of the night...DragonSally--thank you for your concern! If we hadn't done the big move to New Mexico, and were still living in my mom's Santa Barbara place....well, we would have been evacuated (mandatory) on Thursday.

The SB Botanical Garden is taking a BIG hit, and they've even evacuated the SB Mission. Probably the largest "fire danger" area in town itself for the last 100 years...

But my friends seem to be okay, and only a few lost houses (amongst those I know and love.)

Phi--MUST tell...where can one obtain such a lovely perfect bottle of wine :)

At 19:21 Blogger vampi said...

the fires in sb are so sad and devastating. i was just there a few weeks ago. Lys, i'm glad your family isn't in danger, but i'm sad about all that are losing everything. i got this link from the LAFD who have a blog and sent some personell up to help. these fires are scary.

At 20:56 Blogger Na said...

Yay for freetime! Yay for friends recovering from surgery! Yay for no new washers!

I need to read some US news, hadn't heard what was happening in SB. :( Hope people are okay.

On a completely different, unrelated, selfish and very high note, I just saw the new STAR TREK!!!!! It's *insert adverbial expletive of your choice* brilliant. I am blissed out.

At 21:14 Blogger Dragonsally said...

I'm really looking forward to the new Star Trek...on a big 3D screeen

At 21:17 Blogger Jess said...

We just saw Star Trek too! Literally seven hundred shades of Awesome. Eeeeee, Simon Pegg! Karl Urban! Eeeee! \o/ (And the guy who played Younger Spock was brilliant.)

At 21:35 Blogger dabbler said...

Well, saw the Senior Project movie. Very well done, psychological horror, well written and amazing , considering that the kid who made ir used a fifteen year old camera, had essentially no budget, and worked with two classmates as the actors. Easily as good as some of the films shown in our local filmed-in-the-area film fest.

I'm SO not a creepy thriller fan...must go read something soothing before bed.

Night all fiends...

wwoooooooo! yes. all the shades of awesomeness. ::jumps up and down some more::

At 21:53 Blogger ariandalen said...

I saw "Star Trek" this afternoon.

::REALLY BIG GRIN::I can haz more, plz?

Roughly three weeks to a month ago, my DH began teasing me about this movie using our daughters. DD1 comes up to me, quoting, "What is your name Citizen?" "James Tiberius You Still Have To WA-ait! You Still Have to WA-ait!" Followed by DD2 saying, "Live Long and Be Patient," while attempting to place her fingers in the correct position. On the way to the theatre today, DD1 remarked that she won't have to say that anymore.

At 22:06 Blogger ariandalen said...

Jess, Zachary Quinto plays the younger Spock. He has been playing Sylar on "Heroes" for the past three years. He had to shave his eyebrows for the role of Spock.

Good morning! Hope you're feeling much better, Q. Have some happy Quakepandas! (Aren't these the pandas?) Look at them, flolloping about. :D

Zachary Quinto! That was it. He was ace. And so was Karl Urban. Eeee!

So this morning we went looking for a Scotty action figure, for a friend of mine who's nuts for Simon Pegg. It doesn't look anything like Simon Pegg! Boo.

At 10:05 Blogger spacedlaw said...

It's a lovely hot day here and we were supposed to go boating but Cesare only woke up after 11:30 so we had our picnic on the terrace instead and then went for a walk in the park of the aquaducts.
