In Which We See More Photos By Mr Kyle Cassidy!! This Makes Us Happy...

And yet more photos by the magic Mr Kyle Cassidy! I have a lot of the Boss and Miss AFP walking thru the woods with the dog, but Boss points out that with his dark glasses and the leash, he looks like a blind person. But these are lovely. And he doesn't look at all blind.

That kitty he is holding is Zoe, who is in fact blind, and the two old ladies on the bottom are Pod and Hermoinie. They are 17 now, and kind of creak when they move about. Hermoinie is deaf now, but they still love scritches and cuddles.

Love and Photos,
Lorraine

I wonder whether this is what the Vicorians had in mind when they advised telling childnre about the birds and the bees?

Victorians, I meant.

(Er, vampi - were you googling for insect porn again?)

glad you haven't been eaten by zombies (or Zombees), Q - I seem to have managed the whole synched-fiends thing and have been curled up with cat for most of the day.

(Just realised - it's a month til FiendDom Come - are we all going to be on, do you think...?

hope you start to feel better soon, and that the chatter has been amusing you.

How are you liking the new hair now you've lived with it a couple of days?

that is a terrifing thought majorie :)

isn't it just? Must remember to pack lots of chocolate, in case.

At 14:45 Blogger Na said...

Mmm. Chocolate. I am really craving chocolate cake with chocolate icing, for no discernible reason. Er. Other than that my dragonette was "feeding" us all pretend chocolate cake earlier.

I am kicking editorial butt today!!! But taking a break for a family hike in the nearby ravine.

At 14:49 Blogger Phiala said...

Marjorie, it seems entirely possible, I'm afraid. Actually, everyone ELSE should be afraid.

Fortunately it is possible to find decent chocolate in the US.

Chocolate. I too am craving chocolate. And you Fiends aren't helping. I'm messing around downtown, and now trying to figure out if there's anything good and chocolaty within a couple blocks.

Also going to the library for the next Naomi Novik. And then, back to skeining yarn, my project for the afternoon.

At 14:59 Blogger vampi said...

Although you will all have to take lots of pics, since I'm not going to be able to make it :-/

At least I won't have to share my chocolate with anyone (why, yes, I'm still synced) or inflict what is starting to be a pattern of menstrual migraines. Blah.

Lorraine (and the similarly afflicted), sorry to hear you're feeling lousy. But glad to hear from you. I admit it, I'm a chronic worrier; and you would not believe some of the scenarios I can come up with ;-)

I've been spending this afternoon reading Gaskell for Rare Book School. At one point he states that bibliographers need the ability "to persevere in tediously repetitive tasks." He goes on (for 400+ pages) to help us develop this ability by being as tedious as possible himself. How can someone take such an interesting subject as printing history and make it sound like paint drying? He's taking my time away from reading authors who can do the opposite--write about paint drying in such a way as to make it utterly fascinating.

But read him I must...

Glad you've risen from the dead Q!!

We went to maker faire today and had a good time then came home and stopped at the camp for the AIDS lifecycle ride and met up w/ Boss's son. He didn't look like he'd ridden down from SF! These crazy bikers. Ben had coincidentally put on his Scary Trousers shirt this morning (unprompted, not knowing we were going to see mike!). We ran into him on the path down to the tents and i saw him checking out ben's shirt before i realized it was Mike....it was really funny.

Anyway, time for ben's dinner.

SInce all of you are on the same cycle, and I don't do that any more, would there be any takers if I were to bring my leftover insertable feminine hygiene products? The packages are opened, but unused (I told you boys not to look). All my friends are not using anymore either, and I'm not sure the women's shelter will take open packages.

Just let me know.

My birthday weekend was great. I feel properly prepared to go forth into the future!

At 02:16 Blogger Marjorie said...

DG - you're not able to come to FiendomCome? I'm sorry to hear that.

Na - I like the way your mind works ;-)

I'm choosing to belive that the positive energy generated by massed ranks of fiends will overcome any moon shadow...
That and chocolate.

Right. must go to work. (Which is a shame, as it's another beautifully sunny day, and I would rather go out for a walk)

At 10:27 Blogger Hellie said...

I don't generally like messing with nature (bad experiences on the pill!) but was due on when I went to Hong Kong and really didn't want to deal with the hassle of moon time on top of recovering from shingles!! Dr prescribed me norethisterone (progesterone pill but not a contraceptive) and it worked fine, delayed my moon time until I came home. Only thing is I've had to get used to a slightly different time of the month, otherwise I too would be craving chocolate and a cat to stroke!

I'm beginning to wonder if those of us on a different schedule (or with different anatomy) should have an escape plan, in case chocolate doesn't work ;-)

At 12:46 Blogger Siri said...

Can't it be milk chocolate?

At 12:59 Blogger Beez said...

Just for you Siri.

Escape plan? How about RUM? Yahr!

Smalley's Pirate Bar and Caribbean Bar-B-Que in Stillwater.

Also, hot tub!

At 13:01 Blogger Marjorie said...

Siri - perhaps some of each. For me, the darker the better. 70% + cocoa solids is my idea of heaven (although I'll take milk chocolate if none of the hardcore stuff is available.)

OSS - I think the back up plan should involve more chocolate, and perhaps alcohol.

At 13:05 Blogger vampi said...

I saw this bus bench on my way into work. i don't think we need to encourage secretions of any kind on a bus bench.

chocolate and alcohol sound liek heaven. i don't get to drink much at home, o i will enjoy having a nice drink with awesome company.

Also, HOT TUB! awesome.

At 16:03 Blogger EmilyLady said...

Heehee, Vampi.

Okay Fiends, if there's going to be drinking at the Fiend Gathering, my mother and I will, of course, need to know.

At 16:05 Blogger Phiala said...

Emily, you're not doing any drinking. But those of us over 21 and so inclined will be.

At 16:17 Blogger EmilyLady said...

No, I just get a little nervous sometimes in settings with drinks. I know it sounds silly. I don't plan on doing any drinking but I just don't want to find myself in the middle of something wild ... but I don't think that will happen. Shutting up. Terrified I will offend a Fiend or two.

At 16:18 Blogger vampi said...

Oh miss Emily, no need to worry. I was refering to a glass of wine at dinner, not a raging kegger. :)

At 16:19 Blogger Marjorie said...

don't worry Emily, the alcohol will not be compulsary ;-)
You will have to make do with chocolate and hot tubs . . .

At 16:22 Blogger vampi said...

oh gosh, an no offense taken. I tend to be the sober one amongst my friends. Being uncomfortable in boozy settings is entirely understandable. I'm pretty sure that you will never be made to feel uncomfortable, even if there is alcohol, just by the temperment of the fiends.

If you do feel uncomfrotable, please do let someone know, i volulnteer to be an escape plan, if the level of alcohol starts making you uncomfortable. alcohol, no alcohol, i'm happy either way :)

At 16:26 Blogger Marjorie said...

I don't think you'll offend anyone, Emily - I think all of the fiends want all of the other fiends to be comfortable!

And I don't *think* we're planning anything wild.(or not wild-and-alcohol-related, anyway.)If Phiala & OSS & DataG get together there could be some pretty wild knitting...

Not.

Wondered, Ms. Fabulous, if moontime was keeping you from commenting. Well, that and being busier than a one-armed paper hanger. ;)

Remind me next time I say I'm going hiking to take water with me, not just leave drinks in the car. Heat exhaustion is just so much fun.

At 16:53 Blogger ariandalen said...

No, Ticia. Henna tattoos.

Or maybe skulls painted on your face.

At 16:56 Blogger Ticia said...

Oh goodie! I can get onboard with that!:-D

At 16:58 Blogger One Sock Short said...

I'll add my reassurances, Emily. I doubt if I could *do* wild even if I tried. That whole spinster librarian thing, ya know. For me alcoholic drinks are all about flavor anyway. One or two glasses of wine or beer because they taste good. That's pretty much it. I suspect most of us joke about drinking much more than we actually drink.

At 17:25 Blogger EmilyLady said...

Sorry, guys, and thanks so much! I feel a lot better now. Who could ask for better friends than Fiends?

June is officially here today, by the way. It's coming. I can hardly believe it!

Cant' believe it's june! Yay!!

Are we going to have anywhere with a kitchen? We had been talking about renting a house or something but i don't know if that materialized.

At 18:11 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Lousy day. For no good reason. But I've been chomping on grapes instead of all the garbage I thought about picking up on the way home. The post-fat-salt-sugar rush would just have made things worse anyway. Now to make something good for supper. Probably greens. I have no ambition tonight.

At 18:28 Blogger Beez said...

Emily, no worries. I don't drink, our Fearless Leader doesn't drink, there will be at least one kid as Mom Chantrelle said.

Yeah- The Wild Bunch, that's us. *falls over laughing*

Aaaaand I don't think any of us are that easily offended, so deep breath and relax.

Kitchen? I hope so. Cooking with Fiends would be a blast!

At 19:06 Blogger Jane said...

OK, I am finished with all those feminine products; may I still have some of the special chocolates?

Q miss your comments - hope you're better soon.

For those of us who won't be at the gathering, will you all be tweeting and commenting all the way through?

At 20:44 Blogger EmilyLady said...

Thanks so much ... Robyn, your comment was particularly reassuring .... So after all we've heard about Ben, I can finally get to meet him? Wish I could bring my brothers, but a trip alone won't hurt. Ah, no Axl Rose blasting through the house ... no unbrushed hair flying all over the bathroom (and living room and kitchen and family room) ... no wild drumming on the walls keeping me up at night ....

(sob) I'm going to miss it! Whatever am I going to do when I go off to college?

At 21:38 Blogger Beez said...

Emily, if you're going to be living in a dorm, trust me- it will feel very very near.

At 22:18 Blogger ariandalen said...

I'll have my 7 and 5 year old daughters with me, as well as their father. I don't drink much in public, and DH probably won't be drinking anything alcoholic as he's looking down the Type II diabetes barrel. He's currently coming off adverse reactions to Prednisone and Bactrim, and has a doctor's appointment scheduled for after we return home.

Yeah. It's been real fun around my house the past couple of weeks.

At 23:14 Blogger AletaMay said...

Just to be clear and make sure expectations do not turn into disappointments... there is not a hot tub at the Water Street Inn. The rooms do have whirlpool baths but there is not a big party size hot tub.

I do not think that anyone has gotten a place with a kitchen at this point. I believe someone said they were going to look for such a place, but I have not heard of anyone actually finding one.

Emily. What everyone else said. Seems to me that there is a very good mix of Fiends who might want to have a few drinks and fiends who prefer not to. You will be in a bar, of course, when listening to Paul and Lorraine, but I really think you will feel comfortable there. Food is served and I have often seen families with younger kids there.

I will be sending emails out this week re some of the details for the gathering.

It really is coming up quickly. Yicks.

At 23:25 Blogger ariandalen said...

Breathe, Aleta. It will all come together.

And if it doesn't, we'll wing it, and still have a good time.

:)

At 23:31 Blogger Beez said...

Psshhh, as far as the hot tub goes, I was mostly kidding, but we can be pirates and raid someone else's *koff*quichie*koff*

Ariandalen's right- even if we do it on the fly it'll be great.

At 23:54 Blogger vampi said...

i've been to several meets like this.
as we will all have different interests and priorities, i think having a list of possible activities is the best way. then people can break off into smaller groups and do their thing, and come back together for concerts/dinners.

i think the most important this is a name/mobile list. this way people can hook up and see what others are doing

also by not hard planing it, we are flexible if the weather becomes blah. we can substitute indoor activities.

mm whirlpool baths :)

so i'm geographically challenged, is the city far from where we are? because i'd love to see some of the city.

I have the card/story game "Once Upon A Time" that I will be bringing. I may go to my local game store next week to see if they have any add-ons for it. I know that a supplement is out for unhappy endings, but I don't know what other supplements may be out, or if the local store has any. Will just have to wait and see.

It's a fun game, but can take a big chunk of time to play. Think group storytelling, but you are trying to use all your cards to get to your ending (another card). It helps to have a really good background in fairy/folk tales; not that I think that is lacking in anyone here. ;)

I'll be off soon to go to an eye exam. New glasses will almost certainly be ordered. I hate choosing new frames. I'd like to get something different. I've been wearing variations of the same style for years and years. But it's so hard to choose when I can't see myself. There's also that "gahh! different!" reaction that's difficult to tell apart from genuinely recognizing a bad shape for me.

Pity the people in the shop...

At 13:50 Blogger Fluffy said...

Well, someone mentioned chocolate and alcohol, which, strangely enough, is my specialty. Chocolate martini. Mmmmm. Dessert that bites back.

And re: excessive drinking, I DO avoid a seriously drunken party - safety issues aside, it's bo-ring when you're the sober one - the jokes just aren't as funny... And as far as ME drinking, I probably would imbibe enough to get goofy if I didn't have to drive, and if I didn't have my 14-year-old along. But I will so I won't. Sigh. Being a mommy is hard.

Just kidding - I wouldn't have invited Revelle along if I didn't like her company. she's seriously funny and she doesn't even drink!

It looks like we will have a full complement of Younger Fiends (or is it Fiend Trainees?) at the gathering. I'm going to try to rest the next three weeks so I'll be refreshed and ready. Woohoo?

Also, is ANYONE interested in some retail therapy? Daughter must go to the MoAmerica and I will be driving. She is a Fashion Fiend.

Emily, no worries, no worries.

I don't reckon I need activities on this grand planned weekend, I'll be delighted just to visit with folks. :) Although a hike with birdwatching, or really anything in nature, would be lovely, too.

Will there be Web casting? Agree there must be pictures posted and twittering and such, to include the fiends not attending this time.

so i want to see:
Science Museum of Minnesota, 120 W. Kellogg Blvd, Saint Paul, 651 221-9444, [7]. Open 9:30am-5pm M-W, 9:30am-9pm Th-Sa, 10am-5pm Sun. The Science Museum overlooks the Mississippi River and has a permanent exhibit devoted to the river. The museum also has a dinosaur fossils gallery and an experiment gallery with various hands-on activities. The collections gallery includes several quack medical devices from the now-defunct Museum of Questionable Medical Devices.

Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, Walker Art Center, 725 Vineland Place, [10]. Open daily, 6am-Midnight. The Sculpture garden is an outdoor exhibition of sculptures from many different artists, including the famous Spoonbridge and Cherry.
Mill City Museum, 704 S. 2nd St, Minneapolis, [11]. Open 10AM-5PM Tu-Sa, Noon-5PM Su. This interactive museum, an arm of the Minnesota Historical Society, recounts Minneapolis' history as the flour milling capital of the world. The eight-story "Flour Tower" ride describes life in the mills, and leads to an observation deck atop the Washburn A Mill, formerly the world's largest flour mill.

Eyes have been examined and stronger glasses ordered. No bifocals yet, but could still happen in a few years. I did, in fact, succeed in getting different frames. Very different. I sure hope I like them when they have lenses I can see through. At least I can't chicken out and not wear them. I need the stronger Rx too much.

At 16:39 Blogger dabbler said...

OSS, I've often thought someone should invent a way to upload a pic, and try different frames on it on the 'puter. Then we could look at it with our glasses on, and from a better perspective than my inch-and-a-half away from the mirror. Could market it to all these glasses places in malls, maybe. Danguy? Dr. Wicked? DG, adrianalen? Other tech wizards?

I'm sure DDs would want to see the dinosaur exhibit. DD1's obsession with dinosaurs is. . . pretty bad. The kids in her class and on the bus use it to provoke her. Her father and I are both tired of the over-excited response dinosaurs elicit from her; however, we're not above using it to show all the things she'll need to work at in order to become a paleontologist.
