On the Subject of Christopher Moore...

I was talking with Christopher Moore today, and he referred to himself as a "Famous Unknown Author". Well, says I, hardly. You are brilliant, talented, hardworking, witty and I am certain read by millions. How could you not be? Your books are wonderful! I love them, read them many times, you are so very in MY top 10, how could you not be at the top of the list of discriminating readers everywhere?

So my question: Do you know and love Christopher Moore's Books? Have you not heard of him? (If not, remedy that, and quickly. Seriously, you have a Feast waiting for you)

If you have read him, I know you like them, I know your tastes that well. I am no good at writing on why I liked a book, or what makes a book a good one. I only know I like this guy. He makes me laugh, and his books are so well thought out, plotted, his turns of phrase sparkling drops in a thunderstorm, his words put together like the sweet way Hagen Daaz does their Coconut/Pineapple ice cream, his sentences flowing in a steady stream that might well go anywhere, he's like some sort of Demonic Genius.

Ok, see? That may have come out out wrong.

Well, he reminds me of Eddi Izzards Comedy.

By that I mean, you know how well Mr Izzard does that thing where he has so many threads going on, like a juggler throwing balls into the air, more and more, until you have forgotten when there were only a couple and at the end, he brings them all back in, with a finish that is more that a Big Finish, the sort that leaves you in awe, cheering his stream of thought, which has the intelligence of Einstein, and the Madness of a poet? Never dropping a one and dancing all the time?

Ok. Better. That's what I think of Mr Moore's writing.

(We will have to see what Mr Moore, who is no doubt reading this and shaking his head, thinks of my rants on his work. Maybe he doesn't WANT my help singing his fame and praises to the world.)

What Christopher Moore books do you like best? I started with Practical Demonkeeping, his first, and moved on from there, and actually just started You Suck What is it exactly that makes them so good? At what point are you there with him, and not just visiting the book, but have taken up residence? Which did you like best?

If you haven't read him, I know the things these Fiends are going to say, will talk you into it. If I haven't managed to.

I am currently in charge of yet another teen gathering, (yes, it is getting to be a habit) and so have some time to chill here before heading home. I'd thought to take pictures of the New BenchCouch and talk on that. (made for me by my Neighbor especially for the Scream Porch out of Cedar, a wonder of brilliance and craft) but it looks like I will be home to late for that Blog, and so, since I have been thinking of Mr Moore's books all day..

We will speak on those instead.

Sadly, I'm probably the only holdout when it comes to Christopher Moore. I tried reading his books (because I love love LOVE Tom Robbins, who has a similarly free-wheeling style) but I just couldn't get into them for some reason:/ Maybe I should try again..

I did get (from the library)the new Patricia Briggs (Bone Crossed, which I finished today) and the new Maria Snyder (Storm Glass) yesterday.

And I survived the Math placement test, finding out that I remember exactly nada about algebra.;P

Christopher Moore's Twitters are the funniest, most surreal things. He has a pet polar bear named Whitey who ate the maid and gets up to the craziest hi-jinks! If you ever have a chance to listen to him at a signing or whatever, do it.

My introduction was Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal, which we recently repurchased in a Bible-looking edition. I still have my old copy, does a Fiend need an introduction to Moore? Not sure my nephew is ready to appreciate it yet ;-)

Oh, I've been pondering what to get the sweetie for his birthday, I think introducing him to Moore is a good idea.. *wanders off to shop*

I have not read this Moore but he is now on the list. It is becoming a long list and a happy one.

Jess and Q -- I do that with both music and authors. And maybe television shows as well. I like listening to my recommendations station on Last FM because it breaks me out of that a bit. Not that it is a bad thing, but I want to make sure I am getting beyond what I know from time to time, you know? But I do like getting really immersed in one persons work (film, books, music, visual art) from time to time because I think it allows for a really deep experience.

Wow. That sounds kinda silly. I think it is time for turning off the computer soon!

Fiends, I need to let off a tiny bit o' steam to you all who will "get it" I think -- my aunt-in-law here this evening exclaimed at me "There's something wrong with you!" for not caring much for the movie Twilight, and later went on and on about how she hates Dr. Who, even after my guy mentioned that I adore it. I am happy for people to love whatever floats their boat, in movies, music, books, anything. The world is only better for diversity, says I. Still I felt my blood rising a bit 'tho I tried to just smile and laugh it off. I know, if that's the worst interaction we ever have, we're golden. *takes deep breaths* Meh.

There is a DVD available from the Santa Barbara Writer's Conference (http://www.sbwc.org) of a talk Chris gave on being a writer -- it is just as funny and insightful as you'd imagine.

I haven't read Lamb yet, to my deep and abiding shame.

I'd recommend The Stupidest Angel as a gateway book, partly because it's short and can give you a good taste of his style and sense of humor. My first was Bloodsucking Fiends, though (which maybe should be on one of those Summer Reading Lists for Fiends School).

Phiala - Mr. Jess had the same problem with Wolfe at first-- he couldn't get used to the style. I had trouble with that too; it's sort of like picking up Virginia Woolf in that it takes some time to adjust to the language. (In my case, though, it was really more that the beginning of Shadow and Claw is awfully bleak and gruesome-- I really winced my way through the first few chapters.) Stick with it for a while, though, and there's much beauty and strangeness in it. The series really grew on me.

Thanks, fiends, for the supportive words on my steam-letting. I was tired last night, too (another good reason to keep it light and laugh it off, try to remember, it could be just me)... then AIL came over today wearing a t-shirt that reads "I'm not mean. I just don't like you." Ah well. We get along fine. And she does like Firefly. ;)

And then realized, I was so excited to meet people in person at Fiendom Come, but in the middle of weekend suddenly felt shy. So silly, I know. Maybe just overload. At any rate, after the chat with AIL last night, realized how nice it is to be in conversation, whether online or in person when possible, with such a nice group of folks as this, who also dig so many of the same things in life. Just sayin'.

Should like to see this cedar bench.

I suspect its dropped down from the roof via nice crack that goes all the way along the edge of the ceiling.

I just happened to open the booklet for the Melbourne International Film Festival, and what did I find but a special screening of Coraline.

Squeeee. I now have tickets, printed out and ready in my wallet. That's nearly 2 weeks before it shows in cinemas generally here!

This is shaping up to be a fun few weeks -we go and see Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders live in 4 sleeps, then 10 days later Coraline. Oh, Lorraine, please tell Boss they didn't change the name as had been reported.

And I saw the George MacDonald comment, smiled and thought lovingly of Curdie, but didn't take time to reply. Been in the throes of in-and-out teens/young adults. Am now on the second day of trying to clean DDs room (I think, at 18, and given my general lack of cleaning prowess, this is the last one she gets).

And then a few days of usual job stuff, and off to Albany NY for a three day training. Always fun, but not vacation. I want a vacation. Last time I went anywhere just for fun? Ummm...one day to go to a weeding? Does that count? Shameful.

And Christopher Moore can't be doing too poorly. The least expensive used copy of one of his books is over $3.00 on Amazon. I like Lust Lizard, and have been reminded to try some more.

We had the mini donuts with the garam masal and it was very good- just a bit more oomph than the traditional cinnamon sugar. Also eaten with glee were samosas and cauliflower pakora and mango lassi to drink.

Why, yes, we are crazy. Didn't you know that already? Just because our a/c is running all afternoon just to keep the house at 80 F doesn't mean we can't start a fire in the firepit. Actually, we told the girls that they could roast marshmallows while we were in Washington state, but it never happened. Though they did get to play in the snow in short sleeves on July 4th. :)

I think I started with Practical Demonkeeping also, but my favorite is probably Lamb. Growing up Roman Catholic and going through the whole Bible study stuff it kind of struck a chord.

For me, Island of the Sequined Love Nun sticks in my noggin as one of the best, with Bloodsucking Fiends and You Suck: A Love Story close seconds. I remember reading Fluke and getting to one point and saying WTF out loud. There hasn't been another story that did that. The Stupidest Angel had me laughing out loud in my office's lunch room, which got me some strange looks from the near retirement aged bitties whose gossip I interrupted.
Whatever he writes, I will read because he's that good. When he did a book signing in Cambridge, MA a few years ago, I was able to attend and got a 20-30 minute stand up routine out of it as well. Heck, he keeps me entertained during the work day with his tweets. Anyone who hasn't checked out his work, should do so.

I'm not usually very into poetry, for example, but pretty much any page of Taliesin Through Logres will mesmerize me.

As for this Christopher Moore fellow...considering we are evidently from the same town (or he lives there now, I was a scosh confused) it amazes me that I've NOT read him before. When I left the book industry all those years ago, I really LEFT the Industry :)

I am going in for outpatient surgery on my uterus tomorrow, as it has been giving me some problems, and appears to have some funkiness that needs remedying. This is not supposed to be anything to be fearful of (some may recall a tweet of a few weeks back saying they don't think its cancer), and I am quite confident that all will be well with both the surgery and the improved outcome.

But I'm nervous anyway! So if you'd keep me in your fiendish thoughts tomorrow, I would really appreciate it.

I have had the sort of nonstop workday that makes my neck hurt, but am now home, gnawing on smoked spareribs, followed by mini peppermint patties. (They're meant to be used like chocolate chips, but I'm just eating 'em.) Amazing how good it feels to gnaw on bones after an aggravating day.
