On the Subject of Christopher Moore...

I was talking with Christopher Moore today, and he referred to himself as a "Famous Unknown Author". Well, says I, hardly. You are brilliant, talented, hardworking, witty and I am certain read by millions. How could you not be? Your books are wonderful! I love them, read them many times, you are so very in MY top 10, how could you not be at the top of the list of discriminating readers everywhere?

So my question: Do you know and love Christopher Moore's Books? Have you not heard of him? (If not, remedy that, and quickly. Seriously, you have a Feast waiting for you)

If you have read him, I know you like them, I know your tastes that well. I am no good at writing on why I liked a book, or what makes a book a good one. I only know I like this guy. He makes me laugh, and his books are so well thought out, plotted, his turns of phrase sparkling drops in a thunderstorm, his words put together like the sweet way Hagen Daaz does their Coconut/Pineapple ice cream, his sentences flowing in a steady stream that might well go anywhere, he's like some sort of Demonic Genius.

Ok, see? That may have come out out wrong.

Well, he reminds me of Eddi Izzards Comedy.

By that I mean, you know how well Mr Izzard does that thing where he has so many threads going on, like a juggler throwing balls into the air, more and more, until you have forgotten when there were only a couple and at the end, he brings them all back in, with a finish that is more that a Big Finish, the sort that leaves you in awe, cheering his stream of thought, which has the intelligence of Einstein, and the Madness of a poet? Never dropping a one and dancing all the time?

Ok. Better. That's what I think of Mr Moore's writing.

(We will have to see what Mr Moore, who is no doubt reading this and shaking his head, thinks of my rants on his work. Maybe he doesn't WANT my help singing his fame and praises to the world.)

What Christopher Moore books do you like best? I started with Practical Demonkeeping, his first, and moved on from there, and actually just started You Suck What is it exactly that makes them so good? At what point are you there with him, and not just visiting the book, but have taken up residence? Which did you like best?

If you haven't read him, I know the things these Fiends are going to say, will talk you into it. If I haven't managed to.

I am currently in charge of yet another teen gathering, (yes, it is getting to be a habit) and so have some time to chill here before heading home. I'd thought to take pictures of the New BenchCouch and talk on that. (made for me by my Neighbor especially for the Scream Porch out of Cedar, a wonder of brilliance and craft) but it looks like I will be home to late for that Blog, and so, since I have been thinking of Mr Moore's books all day..

We will speak on those instead.

Love and Great Writers,
Lorraine

It appears I am going book shopping this weekend....

Woo hoo! The bench is done!

At 20:24 Anonymous kali_licious said...

Bench made of cedar..oooo I bet it's pretty.

Sadly, I'm probably the only holdout when it comes to Christopher Moore. I tried reading his books (because I love love LOVE Tom Robbins, who has a similarly free-wheeling style) but I just couldn't get into them for some reason:/ Maybe I should try again..

I did get (from the library)the new Patricia Briggs (Bone Crossed, which I finished today) and the new Maria Snyder (Storm Glass) yesterday.

And I survived the Math placement test, finding out that I remember exactly nada about algebra.;P

i LOVE LOVE LOVE Lamb. i've read a couple of his others but they didn't have the impact on me that that one did. loved it.

At 20:28 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Ahhh, one of the many things I love about hanging out with Fiends - book/author recommendations. My library doesn't have any of his books, so now I will recommend them.

At 20:29 Blogger Chantrelle said...

I read your post thinking "of course i've read christopher moore...but which book" so went and looked at his books. Turns out that i haven't, just know the name so well i thought i had!

So i will :)

At 20:31 Blogger Fluffy said...

Kali - try "A Dirty Job." It's amazingly good and has a lot of heart and depth that sort of sneak up on you. He's like Terry Pratchett that way.

And Lorraine, tel us what you think of Abby. She's my favorite ever! I wish I still had that book to read!

Christopher Moore's Twitters are the funniest, most surreal things. He has a pet polar bear named Whitey who ate the maid and gets up to the craziest hi-jinks! If you ever have a chance to listen to him at a signing or whatever, do it.

At 20:33 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Ahhh, they do have 2 of his books -now requested.
Lorraine, you should tell him of your power - all these people across the globe who will be reading his books now.

At 20:33 Blogger Fluffy said...

Oh, and if you want to polish up your naughty slang, read his books. I expanded my vocabulary amazingly.

At 20:34 Blogger Fluffy said...

I drove down to Austin when he was signing "Fool," remember? He gave me a HAT! Because I drove so far!

At 20:34 Anonymous chuck said...

I recently tried Hagen Daaz Coconut/Pineapple ice cream, possibly the most disappointing experience of my life.

I read Lamb last year and loved it, but for some reason haven't gone looking for any more by Mr. Moore. must change that.

At 20:37 Blogger Lioness said...

So our library has many of his (and many Christoper Moores as well)
What should I start with?

At 20:40 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Hi Chuck, very sorry about the ice scram disappointment, but glad you like Christopher Moore.

I do remember that Fluffy, got me thinking abut him again.

I feel like I want to do a giant re-read now...

If I ever get home.

(WAIT. Boss has a couple libraries. I shall sneak down and steal some books. Actually, given the WII party, which is now being accompanied by someone or someone's on the piano, no sneaking will be needed. I could ride an elephant thru..)

I love Christopher Moore. Of my three favorite authors (Sir Pterry, Boss, and Moore) he's the only one I've never met.

My introduction was Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal, which we recently repurchased in a Bible-looking edition. I still have my old copy, does a Fiend need an introduction to Moore? Not sure my nephew is ready to appreciate it yet ;-)

Oh, I've been pondering what to get the sweetie for his birthday, I think introducing him to Moore is a good idea.. *wanders off to shop*

At 20:49 Blogger Fluffy said...

"Lamb" is the only one I haven't finished. And I need to acquire "The Stupidest Angel" because I understand Roberto the Fruitbat is a beloved character.

At 21:08 Blogger Beez said...

I loved Lamb. That introduction to Moore came via one of my student employees last school year.

At 21:12 Blogger Jess said...

I haven't, though I think I shall do do at some point. For now I'm still on that Gene Wolfe bender. I cannot. Stop reading. Gene Wolfe. I get like this with books: I get stuck on one author, and just suck up everything they've got; I won't look at anything else, for ages. I think I may be a Bad Reader.

At 21:15 Blogger Lynda the Guppy said...

I haven't read him, but he has loooong been on my list of Authors To Try, because he has what has to be the Best. Titles. Ever. How could you not appreciate someone who writes such titles as "Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove" or (my personal favorite) "Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal."

At 21:28 Anonymous CJ :) aka the crazy cocker lady said...

Lamb is definitely my favorite, followed by A Dirty Job. I still need to go get Fool.

My trifecta: Terry Pratchett, Christopher Moore and Boss.

Then I start reading old detective stories. :)

HOME!!!!!!!

Jess, I do that with music, I listen to someone and can't do anything else forever. Currently it's Thea Gilmour.

I got home to find my Alligator head, Maurice (Yes, the inspiration behind the Flash Girls Maurice and I) on the floor, across the room.

It isn't small, and WAS on top of a cabinet, Wondering what this MEANS, and HOW it got there..

I blame Christopher Moore.

At 22:20 Blogger Jess said...

I blame bengals. :D

At 22:21 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Well, there might be some truth in that, but it begs the question HOW and further WHY???

At 22:26 Blogger Fluffy said...

Because it was THERE!

At 22:29 Blogger Jess said...

...which covers why. But as to how: I would guess an elaborate system of winches and pulleys.

At 22:35 Blogger Beez said...

Maybe Maurice was just making a break for it. He wants a night out at the pub.

At 22:53 Blogger AletaMay said...

There have certainly been a lot of writers with the last name of Moore. What is that about?

I have not read this Moore but he is now on the list. It is becoming a long list and a happy one.

Jess and Q -- I do that with both music and authors. And maybe television shows as well. I like listening to my recommendations station on Last FM because it breaks me out of that a bit. Not that it is a bad thing, but I want to make sure I am getting beyond what I know from time to time, you know? But I do like getting really immersed in one persons work (film, books, music, visual art) from time to time because I think it allows for a really deep experience.

Wow. That sounds kinda silly. I think it is time for turning off the computer soon!

I assume Christopher Moore, like Sir Pterry and Boss and a number of other writers, is very good and much beloved by his readers, based on the fact I can readily find such writers' books in retail stores but can never find 'em in used book stores, my theory being, people buy the books and never ever part with them.

Will add Mr Moore to my to-find-and-read-this-summer list. (Just finished Caitlin Kiernan's Threshold and started Kelly Link's Stranger Things Happen.)

Fiends, I need to let off a tiny bit o' steam to you all who will "get it" I think -- my aunt-in-law here this evening exclaimed at me "There's something wrong with you!" for not caring much for the movie Twilight, and later went on and on about how she hates Dr. Who, even after my guy mentioned that I adore it. I am happy for people to love whatever floats their boat, in movies, music, books, anything. The world is only better for diversity, says I. Still I felt my blood rising a bit 'tho I tried to just smile and laugh it off. I know, if that's the worst interaction we ever have, we're golden. *takes deep breaths* Meh.

I just finished A Dirty Job and now it is my favorite.

At 23:52 Blogger Dragonsally said...

At 00:08 Anonymous Wendy Withers said...

I bought You Suck and tried reading it for so long that I gave up on it. I couldn't get into it. (Don't beat me!!!!)

I'll give another title a try, though, just because to me, reading is like breathing. And, it's good to get some different smells in some times? (That was a horrible metaphor and maybe didn't make any sense. I'm sleepy. Time for bed!)

At 00:13 Anonymous Christie said...

I also started with Practical Demonkeeping, long, long ago -- he's kind of a home-town treasure to those of us in the Santa Barbara area, and I have to say that last year when I finally met him (he signed A Dirty Job for me) it was the most Authorial Squeeness I've experienced (because I have not yet met your Boss.)

There is a DVD available from the Santa Barbara Writer's Conference (http://www.sbwc.org) of a talk Chris gave on being a writer -- it is just as funny and insightful as you'd imagine.

I haven't read Lamb yet, to my deep and abiding shame.

At 00:37 Anonymous Anonymous said...

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Christopher Moore!

I started with A Dirty Job when my mom was on hospice and I had a lot of time to read. It was the perfect respite in a terribly depressing situation. I've been hooked on Moore ever since.

Lamb is a must-read!

At 00:49 Blogger ChiaLynn said...

No one else is going to name Coyote Blue?

At 00:58 Blogger Ash said...

Lamb might be my favorite book of all time. And I'm basically a dirty heathen atheist, so it's weird, but I can't help it, the book is freaking brilliant. I've also read Practical Demonkeeping, A Dirty Job, and Fool (which is very close to Lamb on my favorite books list). Right now I'm very excited to be smack in the middle of The Stupidest Angel.

So no, he's not Unknown. Underknown, perhaps...but I know I spread his books around like so much hilarious plague, so I like to think I'm doing my part.

Oh dear Na- what is aunt-in-law, a 15 year old girl? (however, the 15 y.o. girls of Spawn's circle loathe all things Twilight).

Actually, I am speaking of her behavior more than her dubious taste in movies and such.

At 01:18 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Well I don't like coconut icecream but I find Eddie Izzard funny so might give those books a try. Even if they do seem to involve regular fantasy characters (eeeek).

I want to see that bench. Sounds wonderful!

And as to the "HOW and further WHY???" question, the answer to that might be "just because they can" and they are Bengals, after all...

At 04:20 Blogger Verity K Linden said...

I haven't heard of, but I shall abuse Amazon a bit, thanks for the recommendation :)

Aside from that, rather random question. Lorraine, you once posted about a cat toy that was Made Of Awesome. Extendible magic wand thing. I'm getting a cat (first time in over a year) in a couple of month, and am suddenly rather more attentive about potentially amazing toys for 14 week old kittens :) Do you remember the name / have a link?

At 06:57 Blogger Karen B. said...

Christopher Moore's books rock. I'd recommend The Stupidest Angel as a gateway book, partly because it's short and can give you a good taste of his style and sense of humor. My first was Bloodsucking Fiends, though (which maybe should be on one of those Summer Reading Lists for Fiends School).

At 07:45 Anonymous Denise said...

Chris MOore is my favorite. Seriously. I named my car "Whaley Boi" - a prius that for some reason has always caused me to think of Fluke and the Whaley Boys.

I have read all of his books, sometimes over and over again. When I'm bored and trapped away from home without a book, I re-read Fluke on my iPhone.

LOVE Chris Moore.

At 08:36 Blogger Phiala said...

I've read some Moore, but didn't make my tops list. Will tackle some more.

Jess, Gene Wolfe is number one on my "Authors I should like but loathe instead" list. Every so often I try again, but just can't do it. Very strange.

"I was talking with Christopher Moore today..." as one does...

I've read and enjoyed Practical Demonkeeping and the others are on my 'To Read' list. I'm also now following Mr Moore on Twitter, on your recommendation.

Cedar Bench sounds good.

Maurice - Bengals in collaboration with Moore?

At 09:31 Anonymous kali_licious said...

Maybe the Bengals were just trying to get Maurice to the Romance Room so he could serenade them?

;)

At 09:40 Blogger Marjorie said...

Oh, and Na, steam letting-off perectly justified - so rude and insensitive (and may I say, your also *clearly* have way better taste than she does!)

BTW, with all the book recommendy discussion, has anyone else read any Christopher Brookmyre? I think the Fiends would particulalry enjoy "Not the End of the World", although all are v. good.

At 10:06 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Hi fiends. Have some time here while I wait for the next meeting to start. Automated metadata! Woohoo!

Hope you are all doing well. It sounds like you're starting to feel better, Nathalie. Yay!

Today will be very dull, but I have dinner with friends I only see at conferences to look forward to. The other days will then have more interesting meetings. Plus, the Newbery Award dinner tomorrow! Maybe this time I'll actually meet Boss. But if not, I will at least meet Lyndynn. A FiendFest of two.

Bye for now.

At 10:20 Blogger Jess said...

Good morning, lovely peeps! (It'll be afternoon in 46 minutes, but never mind. Good morning!)

Phiala - Mr. Jess had the same problem with Wolfe at first-- he couldn't get used to the style. I had trouble with that too; it's sort of like picking up Virginia Woolf in that it takes some time to adjust to the language. (In my case, though, it was really more that the beginning of Shadow and Claw is awfully bleak and gruesome-- I really winced my way through the first few chapters.) Stick with it for a while, though, and there's much beauty and strangeness in it. The series really grew on me.

At 10:59 Blogger Fluffy said...

One of my favorite Moore quotes is a description of Las Vegas. I'll paraphrase, because I can't remember where it was - Coyote Blue, I think. He said that even though a turd can be covered in rhinestones it's still a turd.

My in-laws live in Las Vegas. Not a Norman Rockwell kind of place to visit Grandma for the holidays. We sing this little song: "Over the river and through the casino to Grandmother's house we go..."

At 11:25 Blogger Stacey said...

LOVE Moore! "Demonic Genius" is a perfect description!

At 13:12 Blogger Unknown said...

I started with LAMB and I think my favorite is a three-way tie between that, A DIRTY JOB and THE LUST LIZARD OF MELANCHOLY COVE. Been a fan of his for years - glad you're giving him some attention!

At 13:40 Blogger Na said...

It seems all of Moore's books have been mentioned here as a favorite by someone. Cool! And Marjorie, hadn't heard of Brookmyre. *adds name to ever-growing list*

Thanks, fiends, for the supportive words on my steam-letting. I was tired last night, too (another good reason to keep it light and laugh it off, try to remember, it could be just me)... then AIL came over today wearing a t-shirt that reads "I'm not mean. I just don't like you." Ah well. We get along fine. And she does like Firefly. ;)

And then realized, I was so excited to meet people in person at Fiendom Come, but in the middle of weekend suddenly felt shy. So silly, I know. Maybe just overload. At any rate, after the chat with AIL last night, realized how nice it is to be in conversation, whether online or in person when possible, with such a nice group of folks as this, who also dig so many of the same things in life. Just sayin'.

Should like to see this cedar bench.

At 14:09 Blogger Kate T said...

Love Love Love C. Moore - Lamb and Bloodsucking Fiends was where I started. Last one that I read was Biff. Tell him, when you speak to him next, of his fans in Chicago (I was given his books by a math teacher I know, and then found a a cadre of likeminded readers).

My excuse: I went to the Maul. Bought a pair of Nikes. Now I can run without screwing up my knee, like I did a month ago. (Man, I was fast when I was twelve. Why did I quit?)

Also pruned my spireas and planted two plants. Go me, with the gardening in 90 degree heat. Woot.

Well, I haven't read any of Mr. Christopher Moore's books. I just started Wilding by C. S. Friedman a few nights ago. I think it serendipitous that a good friend of mine was recommending his books to me just a few days ago. :)

Hi, Lynda the Guppy, Christie, siadda, ChiaLynn, and Zoe Right! Thou art now a Fiend! Though I suspect at least some of you already knew that. ;) Lovely buckled white jackets are available; do take one. You will also find all that you need to personalize your jacket. :)

Soon I may even post a link to instructions for making your own jacket. Just in case you wanted a more tailored look.

i'm sure i'd love going, but i'm such a noob in that world it is awfully intimidating. actually hearing ticia talk about being an author liaison sounded cool. i'd like it for sure if i had a purpose.

*happy dance*

I just happened to open the booklet for the Melbourne International Film Festival, and what did I find but a special screening of Coraline.

Squeeee. I now have tickets, printed out and ready in my wallet. That's nearly 2 weeks before it shows in cinemas generally here!

This is shaping up to be a fun few weeks -we go and see Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders live in 4 sleeps, then 10 days later Coraline. Oh, Lorraine, please tell Boss they didn't change the name as had been reported.

At 06:13 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Lucky you!
Apparently Coraline opened here while I was in Minnesota but I am stuck at home and can't go see it.
:(

At 07:19 Blogger Phiala said...

Sally, fun!

I'm disappointed that nobody responded to my George MacDonald fairy tale comment. Is it possible the collected Fiends have yet to experience this??? Go read The Princess and the Goblin immediately! (It's on Gutenberg for those electronically inclined.)

Fiends working on the Fit might be interested in walking to Rivendell. (Or running, swimming, etc - anything with a distance.)

At 07:28 Blogger Phiala said...

Hm. Nick just got up from the couch where he'd fallen asleep last night and went to bed. Guess I'm on my own for breakfast. (8:30am here).

First: the milk store. Then? What should I have??? Toast, oatmeal, cereal with blueberries, cold pizza? I'm too lazy/hungry/busy to make anything more complicated this morning, I think.

At 08:21 Blogger EmilyLady said...

Good morning from Rhode Island, Fiends ... this shall be a busy Sunday.

At 08:40 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Morning. Drinking tea and doing e-mails, sleepily. Bees today with Sharon!

But first, e-mail done, then hot tub I think. Perfect start to a Sunday!

At 08:51 Blogger Phiala said...

Morning, Q!

I seem to be having the kind of morning where even making coffee is too much work. The cat is very happy about this.

At 09:32 Anonymous Wendy Withers said...

I hate COPS but love Reno 911. Does that mean there's something wrong with me? Or just that I like fantasy more than real life?

How you feeling, Nathalie?

At 09:52 Blogger spacedlaw said...

guy.

I hope work tomorrow goes well.

At 10:28 Blogger Marjorie said...

Squeee! indeed, Sally, and what a lovely combination, to see F&S and then Coraline.

Phiala, I must have missed your Princess & Goblin comment, hence the lack of comment :-)

Vampi & Na, you should definitely meet up for ComicCon, next year if not this.

I have sadly come to the conclusion that I really can't go to Edinburgh for Boss's interview with Ian Rankin, and AFP's gig :-(

Shall have to tweet it so someone else can use the tickets..

At 10:31 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Ok, I know I have been really busy but exactly HOW did I miss the fact my friend Nathilie is BEDRIDDEN????

What's UP with that???

At 10:36 Blogger Jess said...

We're going to miss it, too. We're up there the following week. Ah well.

Nathalie, that's good. Frustrating to be stuck in bed though, I don't doubt.

Tell you what: t's not every day a girl is asked, Should I download the theme tune to Manimal? I must be extra special.

At 10:36 Blogger DataGoddess said...

Morning y'all!! I'm on my first full day of being *dramatic voice* all alone *hand to forehead*

Heh. Dan's just gone to Boulder for a week. I'm actually enjoying it, and have some social things planned for later in the week.

Fluffy, what kind of martini?

I would love to go to comic-con, but it would be too hard physically. If anyone goes, please comment, blog, and tweet about it!

Morning hot tubbing sounds lovely, you could even have your tea while tubbing, if you wanted to!

Nathalie, your thrombosis survival trumps my near-crash experience. :D Next time, we should go for less flight-oriented catastrophe.

At 10:48 Blogger spacedlaw said...

I doubt Cesare will let me fly again...

At 10:49 Blogger DataGoddess said...

Nathalie, how many more shots do you have? And are you being waited on hand and foot, as is appropriate?

At 10:53 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Let's see... 32. Still a looong way to go. And a total no fly, which might be good to avoid missions.

The service is deteriorating a bit as I am recovering, unfortunately. But I can't be bothered to put on a "sick and ailing" show.

At 11:15 Blogger Beez said...

Good morning Fiends who are up and at 'em and to all of those still in bed for whatever reason (myself included out of sheer indulgence).

Nat, I hope work...works. Just don't push it. Cesare should still be doing the hand-and-foot thing or else he needs to get you a cabana boy.

Farmers market day, so I'd best get my butt out the door. The Indian "Chefs Corner" has started doing mini donuts with garam masala. Fusion cooking FTW.

At 12:42 Blogger dabbler said...

Yikes, I, too missed the thrombosis story, Nat. Here's to much gentle dissolving and free flowing asap! And take your time getting back to work.

And I saw the George MacDonald comment, smiled and thought lovingly of Curdie, but didn't take time to reply. Been in the throes of in-and-out teens/young adults. Am now on the second day of trying to clean DDs room (I think, at 18, and given my general lack of cleaning prowess, this is the last one she gets).

And then a few days of usual job stuff, and off to Albany NY for a three day training. Always fun, but not vacation. I want a vacation. Last time I went anywhere just for fun? Ummm...one day to go to a weeding? Does that count? Shameful.

And Christopher Moore can't be doing too poorly. The least expensive used copy of one of his books is over $3.00 on Amazon. I like Lust Lizard, and have been reminded to try some more.

At 12:50 Blogger ariandalen said...

Cool walking challenge, Phiala! Sorry, but you can count me among the clueless regarding George McDonald's The Princess and the Goblin, though I have heard the title before now.

Jeez, Nathalie! I had gathered that getting home didn't go well for you physically, but DVT is serious stuff! Take care, and take it easy.

Yay, Sally! That sounds like so much fun packed within a week. :) I'm glad you're getting to go to two wonderful events!

Beez, garam masala mini-donuts sounds interesting. Let us know what it's like.

At 12:52 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Most of the thrombosis drama (in three acts and not a little bitching about) has unfolded on Twitter, actually, so it was easy to miss.

At 12:58 Blogger spacedlaw said...

In the mean time, has anyone news about Dan? Last heard of in the ER (not sure for himself or for one of his loved ones, though)...

At 13:07 Blogger Siri said...

Nat - just checked FB, and there was nothing new about Dan there - I believe it is his mouth that's had him in fits. I've been worried about your DVT, but you've not said much here - if only on twitter, it's easy for some to miss

Love George McDonald all round.

Will see what my current annual milage is for Phi's fit challenge; I'm at 16+ miles for the month.

Been reading CM causally - have the Fiends one now - bought it in Stillwater - seemed appropriate.

DG - you will survive this week and maybe be a bit put out when he's back - for all of 4 seconds.

DragonSal - you will have such fun - I thought of you this AM when the minister talked about it being summer - I thought "Sally is in winter. I wonder if it's a good or bad one for her. She's not said much recently." No, I wasn't paying much attention to the sermon. I was bored today.

At 13:22 Blogger Ticia said...

Back from the market. The veggies are gorgeous, but still no local tomatoes.

We had the mini donuts with the garam masal and it was very good- just a bit more oomph than the traditional cinnamon sugar. Also eaten with glee were samosas and cauliflower pakora and mango lassi to drink.

I love Sunday.

Okay, Beez. You have successfully made me jealous. well, at least of your farmer's market. Nothing like that at our farmer's market. The Waco fm is only open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings anyway.

DanGuy, I'm glad you're feeling better. I hope you don't need an apicoectomy. Not fun. Not fun at all. I managed to avoid one, but one of the office staff at my dentist's office had to have it done twice. Whatever the problem, here's to a quick return to good health!

The first Moore book that I read (and probably my favorite) was Lamb, introduced to me by an atheistic friend who knows that I am Catholic but do not take it quite seriously enough. I adore, adore, adore it. Now that I am thinking of all the things I like about it (which I will not list for fear of spoiling it for someone else who knows nothing about it), I must go read it again. Excuse me.

Toni - Chocolate Martini!

And I have to say, the idea of getting in a HOT tub is a bit, uh, nauseating. Just checked my little dashboard weather widget and it's 102F out there.

And I did not catch Nathalie's thrombosis thing either, and I'm not even a busy PA. Aaargh. Good thoughts being sent Eastwards.

Got to go put on some makeups to go to dinner (and bookstore-trawling.) Daughter is firmly ensconced at the URJ camp VERY near Ariandalen, and is doing Jewy, Jewy things with her Jewy, Jewy friends.* Which is a treat for her, seeing as how we live in the middle of The Buckle Of The Bible Belt, where Jews and pagans are thin on the ground.

And I dun know George MacDonald. Will check into this.

*Stole this from Lewis Black.

Yes gang, its a cold winter here. Not as cold as a MN winter, but cold enough for me. And I have woken up with a sore and itchy throat -grrr.

Off to Emily's blog!

Yes. ::nodding:: Fluffy, Jr. is just across a small lake from me. Maybe I'll hear them tonight as we're roasting marshmallows for s'mores. :)

Why, yes, we are crazy. Didn't you know that already? Just because our a/c is running all afternoon just to keep the house at 80 F doesn't mean we can't start a fire in the firepit. Actually, we told the girls that they could roast marshmallows while we were in Washington state, but it never happened. Though they did get to play in the snow in short sleeves on July 4th. :)

Fluffy, my email is rowane at hot dot rr dot com, if you want to get together when you retrieve Revelle from camp. :)

I love Christopher Moore's books and have pretty much read everything he has come out with. I think I started with Practical Demonkeeping also, but my favorite is probably Lamb. Growing up Roman Catholic and going through the whole Bible study stuff it kind of struck a chord.

At 20:50 Anonymous Anonymous said...

To me, Lamb is the truth about Jesus Christ. It is what I will have my son read in order to explain who he was and what he was all about. Thank you Author Guy!

At 21:04 Blogger Doug said...

The only CM book left for me to read is Fool and that is next in queue. For me, Island of the Sequined Love Nun sticks in my noggin as one of the best, with Bloodsucking Fiends and You Suck: A Love Story close seconds. I remember reading Fluke and getting to one point and saying WTF out loud. There hasn't been another story that did that. The Stupidest Angel had me laughing out loud in my office's lunch room, which got me some strange looks from the near retirement aged bitties whose gossip I interrupted.
Whatever he writes, I will read because he's that good. When he did a book signing in Cambridge, MA a few years ago, I was able to attend and got a 20-30 minute stand up routine out of it as well. Heck, he keeps me entertained during the work day with his tweets. Anyone who hasn't checked out his work, should do so.

At 21:24 Anonymous kali_licious said...

Chantrelle - Ooooooh pretty link!:)

Sally you're gonna have a great time..Coraline AND F&S. Sounds like a great solution for winter blahs.:)

Nathalie I missed the thrombosis story (my dreadful lack of twitter is showing) but I'm glad you're doing better. That is a LOT of shots.

Poor Dan. There's no pain like tooth/jaw pain, you just can't ignore it. Glad he got some better meds.

Beez, I have farmer's market envy..garam masala doughnuts sound so good.

At 21:28 Anonymous Lysandwr said...

Phiala--I *do* enjoy George McDonald (and more importantly, appreciate his influences as well) but have tended to read, of that circle, more Charles Williams. I'm not usually very into poetry, for example, but pretty much any page of Taliesin Through Logres will mesmerize me.

As for this Christopher Moore fellow...considering we are evidently from the same town (or he lives there now, I was a scosh confused) it amazes me that I've NOT read him before. When I left the book industry all those years ago, I really LEFT the Industry :)

SO glad to have the recommendations, though....seems highly likely that he will be most enjoyable to my reading palate.

No bee post, internet at Boss's died, and I had already downloaded pics there, but tomorrow for certain!

Nathalie, ack, DVT! Two friends have had to deal with that recently, and it's scary stuff.

Fishnet compression stockings could come in handy. With a bit of luck, we'll all end up old little ladies and might need them at some point (although varicose veins can also plague young people, they tend to be less common in younger folks).

I've had a hug from Ms AFP too - well, me and half the club post-gig. That was more because Ms AFP was being very, very kind to her fans. In Ms Q's case I'm sure it was due to her inherent fabulosity. :)

Fiends, a special request here. I am going in for outpatient surgery on my uterus tomorrow, as it has been giving me some problems, and appears to have some funkiness that needs remedying. This is not supposed to be anything to be fearful of (some may recall a tweet of a few weeks back saying they don't think its cancer), and I am quite confident that all will be well with both the surgery and the improved outcome.

But I'm nervous anyway! So if you'd keep me in your fiendish thoughts tomorrow, I would really appreciate it.

I'll tweet when I'm up and at 'em again (andrearundell), but have no internests at home, so you won't see me here for a few days at least.

Hello everybody! I can't tell you how nice it's been just to sit and read comments this evening, though I'm not and never will be close to caught up on all I've missed. I didn't even get back to say thank you to everyone who sent support after the flood, it meant a lot in what was a bit of a stressful time.

Ani, Nat and Dan - sending the good thoughts your way, these bodies of ours are awfully high maintenance really, aren't they?

hi ariandelen ::waves:: yep, I got my postcard today too and cried too and ♥ you guys too - basically what Sally said. Sal made me cry today too with her kindness, it's been a weepy day, but in a happy way. All the love is very, very welcome after the kind of stretch of Bad/Weird Stuff Happening that makes me wonder if I didn't accidentally piss off a malevolent witch. But today has changed the tide, I'm sure of it. It feels so good to be after too long an absence.
