Your News Today....
In very exciting news today, I just took delivery on a Bobcat, or Skidster, as Hans calls it. I have no idea WHAT he is going to do with it, but it has a CLAW attachment, AND he is going to teach me to drive it up and down the driveway, engaging the claw in a Monster-like manner, which ought to make for some REALLY fun video.
I think he has a Plan. Seems to involve moving many trees, and some digging. More on this as it develops, as it were.
News Report on the Teen Party last night has no one dead, no ir-replaceable artwork (or any artwork) damaged, one Epic Water Balloon fight, a Slip-n-slide adventure and one small lesson learned, (at the expense of part of the ceiling downstairs,) about just how much water it is ok to use in the sauna.
Seriously, these are GREAT kids. They were frantic when the water came thru, and tried so hard to help anyway they could, and apologized many times over. It's my belief that getting upset and yelling at kids for something that they sure didn't mean to do, and was an accident, when they are already clearly sorry and upset and coming to you for help, would only teach them NOT to come to you when something bad happens.
I want them to come to me. If something bad happens, COME to me, and I will help. I want them to know they won't be "In Trouble" they will be getting someone who will help fix the trouble. A water spot on the ceiling can be fixed. Kids hearts, maybe not.
Small news today, if anyone in the Twin CIties has been wondering about Paul and I and Gigs, they start back up again in September. Just taking a bit of the summer off, to do summer. We've been playing pretty straight for three years, and it seemed like a nice time for a bit of time off, which isn't a euphemism for Band Trouble, really, just the cards fell that way, and we played them.
The big news for today is I've been asked, and agreed to be, a Guest at Octocon 2010! That would be the National Irish Science Fiction Convention, if you please. They had made some inquires about my Boss and as I was being the Princess of NO, I asked why no one ever asked long time Personal Assistants to come, as we were the ones who knew all the good stuff anyway. (Just trying to soften my NO, as they wrote a really great letter and seemed very nice, something which Boss confirmed when I wrote to him asking about this Con)
Apparently, they thought it over and decided I might well have a point, and now here we are, off to Ireland next year! (Hi Louisa! Finally we meet?)
I am wonderfully excited about this and can't wait. Handy me playing Irish Music all these years too, eh?
We're going to Ireland!
My ancestors would be proud. Not that they were Irish, just I think they would be proud.
Love and news of the Day,
Lorraine

wOOt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! seems FAR too mild a comment! TOtally excellent sweet and shiny news, my dear. I am so pleased for and proud of you. You will do your profession/avocation/calling proud, I am sure.
And have a ton of fun doing it. Perhaps there should be a Fiendom Come Mark the Next over on the Emerald Isle? Just thinkin'
......
Er. So the ceiling's water-stained, but still there, then?
What a friend Maddy has in you, she is so lucky!
Ireland - woohoo. So appropriate for you too.
Bobcat driving will be so much fun - make sure you get a video to share with us all.
Well, that was entertaining! We crashed blogger for a few seconds there, what w'all wanting to talk at once. :)
Whoo, Ireland will be so fun!! Lots of pictures to share, please :-)
And it sounds like Maddy's friends are a good bunch of kids. And, hey, it's not a party until something gets water-stained ;-)
You are a very brave and wise woman who thoroughly deserves to go to Ireland. I am so happy for you!
P.S. Think you'll have room in your luggage for a stowaway?
I LOVED Ireland when I was there. Fantastic country, with amazingly friendly people and the scenery breaks your heart.
I can't wait to go back.
Eh. Nix the stowaway idea. Weight limits, ya know. Now yarn, on the other hand...
NOW you read my Blog?????????????????????????????
Ireland! How cool is that! I have never been there. We keep going to the UK instead, for some reason. Maybe 2010 is our year. I can say things like that, because the Mister isn't reading over my shoulder. Heh heh heh.
Panel on Assistanting! With violins. Using, ahem, a cello bow. Ahem.
Agh, not ceiling leaks. Water shouldn't come out of ceilings. Stuff of nightmares. However: excellent kids. And hopefully a simple patchy job at the very worst.
I feel your house and water woe: the deck guy is here, power-washing. Looks great, but we're trapped. Can't go anywhere. Aieeee.
Oh look, a new fiend. Hello. :D
he he... timing is everything...
Now, about that ceiling.....:)
So you will be rockin' Éire next year? How perfect is that?! WOO HOOO!!
Driving a skidder is much much fun, just be careful if you get off of level ground- they get a bit tippy.
Sounds like quite the project ( I may know what it is, but I'm sure many Projects occur).
>>>notes the concerned homeowner in the #2 position<<<<
The ceiling is probably still up. No worries.
Really.
I love your attitude with the kids, it's one for me to try to keep in mind. I have gotten better about such, but the eye-rolling still gets excessive in spawn's view.
waterstained ceiling < poking eye out.
Could have been worse, right?
Seriously, we are laughing .... but I *do* trust the lovely house is only mildly, cosmetically put out.. Or none of this would be funny

Awww, I do so wish my own mum had taken that approach to my various clumsy shenanigans when I was growing up ;)
Ireland = super keen! :D
So lets see - we shall get you to the best bars for music, bring your own instruments, you can join in..
Best places for wool - check
Good food- check
Great views - check
Accommodation - ask the Boss for at least 1 and we will source the rest for you...
Kinsale Kate
*laughing*
Too right Lys. Probably nothing that a little sheetrock and mud can't fix.
There. Boss has been written with Full Story and all is well.
SOmeone once told me about kids, "Will it matter in 5 years?" If not, roll with it. It's stupid to get upset about little things, or haircuts or clothes.
Another wise man once said about teens "Once you are arguing with them, you have lost, they aren't listening"
I am very excited about Ireland, and yes, I will be needing places to stay. The Con said they would help me out there, but the more the better, as I want to travel around for a week or two as well!
Thank you!
And Welcome, Antiqueiet and Lynda, tho I think I remember Lynda..
I could not agree more about the "when they come to you for help you help so they learn that it is good to come to you for help" thing. Most things have natural consequences I think.
Ireland! Yay! Of course you should be invited to cons. Assistants would make a great panel and assistants with violins would be heaven!
Bobcat. Fun!
Technically I have been here lots but probably not with the commenting..
Places to stay will be easy (almost too easy). You can ask Boss about me - I currently have a guest room, though who knows by 2010 but certainly can get you places to stay in 3 main cities....and at least 1 small town.... (Including Cork for Jazz Festival if that interests you, as tweeted...)
But I think your boss has enough Irish contacts to keep you accommodated here for a month :-)
Q, that sounds most excellent!
And yeah, great time for Boss to peek at your blog... *grin*
Just passing thru, see you all later.
you know, i think your theory on kids should be a theory on dealing with people, full stop. i wish i had someone like you around when i got into shenanigans.
ceiling are over-rated anyways.
i've always always wanted to go to ireleand. i've always wanted to go to a con. hmm.... and i think that's freaking awesome that they wanted you to come, because what you do is truely amazing and fascinating.
Well, it isn't until a year from October, plenty of time for planning now, eh?
This comment has been removed by the author.
Yay, congratulations!!!!!
I have to say I did get that feeling from you - that you will help kids who need help. You're awesome.
Have a fabulous time in Ireland!
You're such a great and understanding person. My mom had friends like you, which is probably why I'm still alive these days. I especially remember an incident with my mom's pool and a short metal pole that resulted in me locking a door behind me and calling my mom's friends to try to keep her from grinding me into dust.
I will echo what has already been said, that is an excellent way to handle problems. Probably with people of any age. We are big talkers here when it comes to issues. I like the 'will it matter in 5 years?' rule. I am so scared of my kids becoming teenagers.
Also, I wish I had a bobcat to play with too!
And finally WOOT! on going to Ireland. Which reminds me, I have GOT to get my passport.
My parents weren't like that. I keep thinking of things and thinking a hug and it's ok, would have made me feel so good, rather than being yelled at.
It's not the kids that need the right attitude, it's the adult.
Went leash walking with Venus and Mim, which was clearly overdue. All concerned had a fine time.
Ireland! How cool is that? ...and speaking of PAs speaking at cons... if the NADWCON folks didn't edit it out, Quiche is mentioned in the description of one of the programs. Terry Pratchett's PA, Rob, is giving a panel on "What It's Like Being Terry's PA." So I put in the description that he'll answer burning questions like whether he and Lorraine, (explaining that she's Boss' PA) are best friends.
I think stars are aligning in some weird way.
Now we need a "Where's Quiche" section of this website - Dr. Wicked?????
Where is this Con - I need to go back to Ireland, too.
OK, I'll talk to myself - I do it all the time - the Con this year is in Dublin, but I couldn't find if it is there all the time. So, Louisa can see Q for sure, and Marjorie, if she has the time, and I'd bet Nathalie could make it up the coast. Or coasts. And Martha from Middle Europe and I'm sure several more I've not thought of. Fiendfest in Ireland. It becomes International, indeed.
My mom's like that now, but she wasn't like that at all when I was an angst filled teenager and freaked out about everything.
I keep thinking I want to get harnesses for leash walking my cats, but I think that might push them over the edge. I have a feeling the harness would freak them out and they'd lay down and not be able to function if I put harnesses on them.
See? Told you. Stars aligning.
Time for bed. Doctor tomorrow. They are actually going to let me see my weight and hope I don't try to kill myself if it's above where I wish it to be. I won't. I promise. Cross your fingers for ... well, whatever you think should happen.
In that case, I cross my fingers for you always seeing yourself as the beautiful person you are, inside and out.
Can't wait to see you at the con! :D (I be one of the organisers!)
And to Siri: yup, should be happening in Dublin in 2010, too! We were in a place just outside of Dublin for a few years, but it looks like we're back in Dublin for a few years to come! We'll be announcing all of the specifics veeerry soon...!

Just got myself some goat's milk to try, because doc said it would be okay.
Threw it straight up. yuk.yuk.yuk.
hope I don't have the same reaction to the goat's cheese I got, or it will have been a very expensive experiment.
W00T!!!!!! Ms. Fabulous is Ireland bound!
Okay, it's not for 14 months. Still. IRELAND!
Glad the Maddie Homecoming Party had only a minor glitch.
Hi, Antiqueight and Danielle!Welcome to Fiendom! If you look to your right, you will find a lovely white jacket with lots of buckles. To your left are supplies for personalizing your new jacket. :)
Lys: In answer to your question from the previous post, yes. :)
Emily, you are far too lovely to be obsessing about your weight. There are far more important things to worry about than a number on a scale. Another thing to remember is that muscle weighs more than fat. And how on Earth did you remain conscious with a reading that low?!
Thanks, ariandalen! I'll certainly look in those directions very soon! It does appear to be 5.17am and my neck says no to moving. eep!! :o
Dragonsally:
Goat cheese is my favorite food. It is awesome when you melt it and eat it with tomatoes. (I don't know if you can eat tomatoes. :( )
SiriP......:)
THANK YOU!!!
runs out gleefully giggling....and sniffing... oh, and YOU TOO miss Fluffy!!
w00t!
That is awesome!
And once in Europe... Just saying. There are so many great places to visit. :)
WooT!! I Liked Dublin, I want to go back there. And I think I've just decided when to go :-)
If you're coming all the way over this side of the Atlantic, shall you have time to stay and visit for a while?
Also, yay for great teens and parties and not getting mad over accidents
Awesome news about Octocon! Glad they wised up. ^_^
oh oh oh oh oh Too. Excited. To. Breathe.
Breathe, Louisa!
Ariandalen, I have no idea how I managed to stay conscious. I should have been either throwing up, having a seizure, almost dead, or one hundred percent dead. So. I say, go me.
Thanks for the tips about weight, everyone. You all rock.
And when I say tips about weight, of course, I mean support for getting past the tough stuff. I actually did have one man tell me, "Yeah, you should lose weight, here's how! Cut out dairy products! Vegetables will fill you up, you don't need anything else!"
Breathing (thanks Em!)
Much to comment but not wise to wish customers away, back soon as I can
Thank you guys for the welcome - the white jacket with long sleeves ad lots of buckles is lovely and fits just fine but I don't look good in white so if you could just help me untie this.....
and Lorraine - it is never too early to start planning especially if we are going to get everyone in place (including favourite bands)
8-)
Tired.
Now fortified with donuts, and unusually large quantities of coffee (for me).
Still tired.
Too much going on, couldn't sleep last night. Too hot last night to do anything useful, which didn't help with the to-do list or raging deadlines.
Can I move waaay out into the country somewhere all by my self now please?
You shouldn't have to move too far for that, Phiala! You could walk there. :D
You know where I always wanted to live? Centre Hall. Really cool little town.
Jess, you do have a point. I can be standing in the middle of a large cornfield in under a ten-minute walk from my house, and out in the woods somewhere in well under an hour.
But that's not nearly far enough away. Daydreams of running away from home are profoundly unsatisfying if that's all the farther you get.
True: I'm going to Boalsburg and never coming back doesn't quite have the same appeal as I'm going to the Yukon.
See? My point exactly.
Someone in California threatening to run away to Boalsburg, that might mean something. But someone in State College? Not so useful.
I'm about to run away from my desk to a secret location (read: break room) to work on the annual report with coffee and without interruptions. So Boalsburg sounds kinda exotic by comparison.
Chicago, California... both far enough away.
Though honestly, I'd rather be in Boalsburg right now too.
I miss NYC. Oh, and Minneapolis. Two places I miss a lot.
That is SHINY news-of-the-day! I'm with Lysandwr on this one--let's all go meet Louisa!
Morning!
Hi Danielle, you may be getting more than you bargined for hee-hee, I wonder how many of these Fiends are going to follow me over?
If someone can talk the Oysterband into playing Dublin while I am there, I may never want for anything ever again. I love that BAND!
Tuesdays are my least fav morning. WHY to garbage men come at 4:30AM? What is UP with that? I am the only one on this block who uses this company, am going to canvass the block and find one who comes LATER. I can hear one out there now, will see who it is..
And you're totally right about kids, Q. Non-blaming, focus on fixing the problem responses keep their trust, keep those lines open. And teach them how to be responsible people and good friends and colleagues, for that matter. I know several people whose first reactions to any crisis are "must fix the blame! on someone else!" then, "not my problem." Its so counter productive, and just makes any problem bigger.
Yes on meeting Louisa! And everyone else! SO many new fiends for us! I am loving this!
I've been trying to explain this about kids to a friend of mine who is having trouble with teens. I watch her with her kids and think how easily she could have diffused the situation, don't argue with them. LISTEN to them. If you set up a power struggle, you will lose.
Be the safe place for them. Be the love.
Right. E_mail is done and I am for cooking a Bengal steak and then off for a ride before work.
It's fall here. No more AC. Fire this morning. SIgh.

Let's try that again.
Heard an interesting program about the discipline issue the other day on NPR, actually-- how yelling and smacking can negatively affect cognative development in young kids. The show was actually about the Baby College program in Harlem.
Where is it... Ah ha. Here.
Please send a little of that cold here, Lorraine. I am badly dehydrating despite the huge amount of tea.
What a wise and exciting post! (Even for Boss, apparently.)
Dublin... in 2010. Hmmm. We went to Worldcon in 2005 in Glasgow as a family. It was wonderful.
But I can't find the Ostocon 2010 dates on their lovely website... Undoubtedly I am missing it in my bleary eyed, just slept for 10+ hours search.
Must contemplate possibilities. And lottery tickets :-)
Err. Nathalie, tea is a diuretic...won't help AT ALL with hydration. Try plain water, or orange juice, or one of the many sports water things.
Having the attitude that when things go awry, the need is to find assistance and figure out how to fix them, rather than run away and hide while pointing at some one else as the cause would be a refreshing change for many adults and institutions as well, wouldn't it!
Whew. What a sentence.
And Phiala and Jess, my experience, at least in Eastern PA, is that moving to the country doesn't last. We did it 27 years ago. And now we live in the suburbs. In the same house.
Total threadkiller, me. I'll be back.
Bobcat! They're so cute. (I mean, compared to the huge scrapers and dump trucks and all.)
Everything else I was going to say has been said. :) But I'll say it again anyway - w00t! for Q going to a con in Ireland! w00t! for this approach to kids' accidents, and definitely, applies to youngsters of all ages.
Doesn't Boss get a Special Jacket? He could dye it black.
And hey, if anyone's going to the Yukon, we're right on the way for most folks, y'know. I think it's the only thing we are on the way to...
Na, I think if Boss gets a fiend jacket it has to stay white, just because...
I'm all excited, Husbeast's adviser just made him first author on his first paper! he's been working his tail off on it all summer, changing his Master's thesis to a journal article, but normal practice is for the adviser to be first author. I'm very proud of him :-)
Oh, Fods, I want it to be fall. I love fall. It's been too hot and sticky to think, breathe or sleep for three days. and the AC is broken. Send fall to Toronto? Anyone? A nice, long, extended fall of cool, just-below-room-temp sunny days and not a lot of rain?
In my parents' house, if there was any rule to remember, it was: Do not lie, and do not try to hide it. It will only make it worse when we find out, and we WILL find out. If it really was an accident, it's fine, we'll figure out how to fix it. Remember that time Dad took out the power to a small shopping plaza - including a bank - with a Bobcat on a Friday afternoon (speaking of Bobcats)? These things happen. They're just likely to be bigger as you get older. Everyone alive? All limbs attached? OK, then...
*grinning at the exchange with the concerned homeowner* Ah, the timing...
Woot! Go DG's Dan! :)
Hang on - all our jackets are white? It's just that white's not really my colour. I prefer earth tones.
I couldn't see the 2010 dates on the Octocon website either...
OK, now, that is exciting!!! Ireland? Wow!
I think that the only good thing about me staying here another year will be going to Stillwater for shows. :) Looking forward to it.
Glad the ceiling is still in tact. I agree with the "in trouble" bit. Kids will learn to be sneaky if it is required.
Off to a busy day. Did you get my email, Q?
I thought it was the people who came to put the jackets onto us who would be in white coats. I've always imagined mine in an unbleached-linen kind of shade...
...and I'll be happy to see those nice young men in their clean white coats, and they're coming to take me away, ha ha!
And... today continues to not go well. Time for a lunch break or something. Or maybe just to hibernate until tomorrow.
Huh. Zombies and a bizarre attempt at personal name authority control.
Vampiress! to differentiate me from other vampiresses on the internet.
mind you, i did enjoy the south park with robert smith where everyone always refered to him as "robert smith of the cure"
south park
Rant! Rrrrg. I'm upset with my cell company. (like that is news) Last Weds, my cell phone started giving me error messages when I send texts to sms "short codes". Like Google and Twitter. So my messages aren't going through (or just a few are, intermittently), and TMobile is telling me I don't have this service at all.
I have spent a good two hours talking to 6 different service people at TMobile trying to get it resolved. Ridiculously, I have had to explain to EACH ONE how using an sms code to Twitter from your phone works. Like *I'm* the expert?
Finally, yesterday, the last customer service person tells me that TMobile does not support Twitter's sms code, or Google's. They aren't on the list. Basically, "we won't put the text through to that number." So to her the weird thing is not that I have trouble Twittering from my phone now, it's that I was ever able to do it. And there's nothing she can do about it.
I changed my cell plan with them and got a new phone for the purpose of making use of this capability. I researched the stuff to get what I needed.
Twitter's web help pages for cell phone twittering include a list of just which cell companies they have sms text support agreements with. It includes TMobile. ??
TMobile's help pages do not include anything about Twitter, though they have a lovely "Follow us on Twitter!" widget prominently displayed. Someone remind me why they want me to follow them on Twitter when they won't allow me to use THEIR SERVICE to access it?
::insert vulgar language of your choice here, be creative!::
OK. Breathe. Rant done. Breathe.
Andrea, I think in the circumstances that is quite restrained!!
i wonder whether a Tweet (or more) mentioning it and including their twitter address would get a response? (A helpful one, I mean)
Sock - Dr. Demento?
Gayle - you're staying another year?
Bridget - it's fall here, in Edmonton. At least, we've got a windy, warm fall breeze, and I just realized today that the leaves are starting to turn, although I suspect that's something to do with having had a very dry summer, too. Still. Breezes. Cool nights. Leaves falling. In August. This should not be allowed...
Hello Fiends,
Hurray and congratulations on going to Ireland, Lorraine!
And I completely agree about not yelling at peoples for accidents; when my kids were teens I intercepted a lot of drama because I was the one 'rent who didn't freak out when Something Happened.
Have fun with the Bobcat! Wouldn't it be great if it had actual bobcat colors and patterns?
The Bengal-Bee alliance has sent me a bunch of honey plants for my new yard--wild balsam-apple, lauristinus and fireweed. Oh, and a teeeny baby Italian plum tree, about as big as an unsharpened pencil.
So sorry about the cell phone crap, ani!
hey.. I am another octocon organiser. We are currently finalising our 2010 dates, which is why they are not yet up.. But we should have them shortly :o)
Hi Tayto! And nice to meet you too! Welcome!
Riding: Oh my yes!
Work: Yup.
You are such a wise woman! "It's my belief that getting upset and yelling at kids for something that they sure didn't mean to do, and was an accident, when they are already clearly sorry and upset and coming to you for help, would only teach them NOT to come to you when something bad happens" Yes! Of course!
Na, I am. Things fell apart about 3 weeks ago. I have had my freak out and am now trying to figure out how to survive the cold and isolation one more time.
The up side is that I have made arrangements so that the move next year is less dependent on other people. And WILL happen.
{{{{{Gayle}}}}}
@Lorraine: Heehee, I can't wait to see, that's for sure! Either way, it's gonna be a total lovefest from the looks of it! :)
and RE: dates for 2010...
It shall all be announced sooon. :) We just need to finalise a couple of things and it shall be announcable.
We'll make sure Lorraine has the dates for all of you when we have them!
xxx
Non-stop today, fiends, NON-STOP! Good to be home.
So was I the only one who fleetingly thought "She's taking in Bobcats now? Aren't Bengals enough Wild for her?"
Fourteen months to prepare? I dunno, that could be cutting it close! I might gently suggest to the lovely con organisers (::waves:: to Danielle and Ickle Tayto) that they push for a late-October date so you (and this includes YOU sitting at home thinking a trip to Dublin wouldn't be so bad) could be here for Oiche Samhain, a real Halloween! Think about it, how much fiendish fun would that be???? Lys - mark your calendar! Lynda - you're on your way back already! OSS - lots of lovely yarn here. Jess - Mr Jess will be made very welcome, honest, speshly if he's wearing his cool t-shirt! Vampi - two birds, one stone*, perfect! Siri - you already have us half organised so you have to be here. Marj - you're a given, yes? I want to meet you too, Andrea! Dabbler et famille, it's a five year thing, obviously!
Do I get the record for most !!! in a comment??? It's all quite exciting!!!
Q, you'll not be short of a bed, however long you stay (does this mean you're TAKING A VACATION?????) I second Kate on the Cork Jazz Fest, great craic, and Kinsale is gorgeous, well worth a gander.
Sal - what's the verdict on the goat's cheese? Can be a bit smelly but yum with walnuts & pasta.
Now I need to go take a photo which, if it works, I'll post here later.
*no birds were harmed in the writing of this comment
Must remember to check the show listings for Octocon '10. There're so many amazing musicians/performers every week in Ireland, you've gotta keep your eye out!
@louisa Octocon can be any weekend of the month, so keep your fingers crossed! ;)
Halloween's on Saturday, so Bank Holiday Monday to recover from con.... sounds good to me!
Hmmm. Will the Princess of No have her own entourage? Time will tell.
Louisa - Definitely!! I have been thinking I want to come back to Dublin, and Ireland generally, and the chance to see Q *and* you again, and maybe some other fiends... (and if it's not Hallowe'e'n, maybe it will fall around my birhtday - not *quite* so good an excuse for a spooky party, but we could make do :-)
Didn't I say we should have the next Fiendom Come in Europe?
It's ALWAYS Halloween where I am, don't forget that, my dears.
Yes, it does seem to be Europe! Very Exciting!
When I, somewhat tentatively, floated the idea to DH, he said "Sounds good to me." Of course, that leaves me to organize and plan and figure out how/where the money comes from, but I'm game.
And thanks Danielle and ickle Tayto...wasn't trying to be pushy on dates, just curious. I well know the number of details that must be wrangled before announcing such bits.
Does ickle Tayto= little Potato? That's what I hear in my head.
Always Halloween! Cannot get cooler than that.
I want to embroider that on something.
@dabbler No probs! Didn't seem pushy at all. I'm just in a total trance today with insomnia and a long day! :) (and I think it does =little potato, but I'm sure she can confirm...!)
Tayto is a chip brand name(crisps in Ireland) - they are made from potatoes after all
PLEASE don't timetable octocon for the same weekend as the jazz festival - we can't make both... (or have I been made a saint and achieved bilocation?
But Louisa is right - on all counts but especially on the gathering for Halloween!!
Fluffy - we should totally start Fabulous Lorraine's Fiendish Cross Stitch Collection :)
Boss does have stellar timing to read the blog huh?
You are a chatty lot. I'd like to go back to Ireland but feel like I'm done w/ Dublin. I'd like to explore the rest of the island though!
Ben's done w/ school so I don't have preschool hours to catch up on things. Just have to bargain w/ him and occupy him w/ stuff and try to accomplish anything during that time!
Haven't read all comments, will try later!
Hi,ickle_Tayto! Welcome to the new Fiendocracy! The standard color of all our jackets is white/off-white, though feel free to change that. That's why we have all the lovely supplies for personalization. :)
My mother remembered when "They're Coming to Take Me Away" came out on the radio. It was pulled due to...okay the exact phrase escapes me right now...potentially upsetting people who suffer from a mental illness. No Joke.
I now return to the happy home with chirping birds, and bees, and flowers...
Robyn!! I've been wondering how you were.
Hey, I have a great idea for a loooonnngg Fiendfest. WorldCon is in Melbourne in September. Everyone should have a 2 month holiday. Come here, tour around Aus a bit, go to OctoCon and tour around Ireland a bit. Oh, and in between we could do Italy with Nathalie and England with Marjorie.
Hmmm, I'm kind of imagining FiendWorldTour here.
Oh, and Louisa - I'm not going to touch the goats cheese after the milk reaction. No way. My poor abused tummy is still protesting.
Certain kitties were very curious with what I brought home this evening. Siri you're the best ever, it could only have been better if Lys had hand delivered mine too!!!
Gayle, hope you're finding the strength to do what needs to be done to get you through ((hugs))
And ((hugs)) for you too, Sal, you're right that goat cheese + dodgy tum = bad idea
Oh and Q, we'll have to get you out West on the Connemara Ponies, nothing like racing down a Clare beach with a dozen horses.
The witching hour has begun here, time I was sleeping. Night all.
Lys and Louisa - Glad things got where they needed to be - and I'm sensing in one piece - that was the scary part.....
Hey, now....if you pack 'em *that* well, we can manage to not destroy them :)
Besides, it had a certain undead quality about it...like an aura....surely acted as a sphere of protection.
Ponies on the beach? Sign me UP!
Mim was going nuts and finally I went out and got the Poop Wheel and brought it in to the Scream Porch. THAT'S more like it. She wanted to run. No poop so far.
She really wants to be outside, but that's simply not possible off leach, poor thing. Poop Wheel on the porch tho, that's cool. The mewing has stopped.
I am going to hot tub and try and stay awake for another hour. Horse and work took it out of me today.
Oh, and Louisa....
I'll hand deliver something next year...in October, perhaps? :)
I always wanted to see the ponies on the shore, too!!
I think some of you might relate to what I'm doing. I'm looking at the clock. It's 8:30. I'm thinking about just going to bed right now and it's making me feel really happy!
I do know what you mean, Fluffy, and I wish I'd done it when you had. But I'm going now. 9:41 is early for some, she said, with a vague, singsong poeticism.
Return of the Poowheel! YES! \o/
Ah, I don't think Ireland's in the cards for us. Not if we want to be with the overseas relatives for Christmas next year, which we do. Can't afford both, so Christmas wins. (But we'll wave when our plane flies over Dublin next week, Louisa. :) )
9:47 is a better bedtime than eleven? Nah. Doesn't scan at all.
Thinking I might could do Dublin! Still want to do SDCC, too, but that's with the whole family and several months earlier. Dublin on my own... been daydreaming about it on and off, all day.
I'm imagining all Mim's talking was, "Hey! That thing there! I want THAT! Hello? I can haz poowheel?! Why won't you get THAT THERE POOWHEEL!?!"
So um, Lorraine, how alarming would it be if some of us followed you all the way to Dublin? ;-)
That's definitely if wishes were fishes territory for me, so there's little risk there. But I was beginning to wonder if the entourage idea was about to make you consider a sort of witness (er, PA) protection program.
I don't mind if you all follow me to Ireland if the Irish don't....
Hot tub. Good.
We welcome The Followers of Lorraine with open arms. :)
This could be the start of something very beautiful...
If wishes were fishes I'd be asleep right now! Or something like that.
On to Plan B: 10:30 p.m.
Hurray for fiendish gifts from Siri!
Wow. Ireland next year would be great. I'll start buying lottery tickets tomorrow!
As lovely as it would be, this Fiend will be in Texas during October of next year. We did good to make it to Minnesota this year. I know that everyone that gets to go will have fun! :)
It will be fun watching plans take place. :)
Between riding this bike and reading all of the comments, I feel like I've run a marathon.
I have a 16 1/2 year old, Lorraine. That's exactly how I've raised her.
Gayle - I can send you lavender periodically through the winter....
Sal - I hope you're feeling better now.
I know there's more. I just can't remember.
I love you all.
I'm thinking following the fiends to Ireland would be nothing more than a daydream for me, but it's a nice daydream! My alma mater offers an Ireland study abroad trip I've always wanted to go on, and it makes me sad I didn't get to go on it.
Serious Black got out tonight and when I found him, he was sniffing a possum and trying to make friends. The possum wandered off into my yard jungle. :/ He definitely has some mental issues. There were no possum sized chunks taken out of his hide. I guess that since Kitty has made her disdain for him known, he's trying to make friends out in the nature.
My old cat, Ki'Ten, used to let the raccoons eat all his food (he was an outdoor cat who lived in the woods) and Kitty used to run outside, run them off, and then she would eat his food. I think I'm a Kitty enabler, and none of my other cats have a chance at a normal life.
Congrats- As someone who seriously has a jonesing for a decent small bobcat- you are my hero. I have cleared my 30 foot driveway by hand - it sucked.
I commonly ask the kids to just put one in their pocket for me.
No time this morning to read all the comments, but hello Fiends. For anyone who's wondering, since I mentioned it, my weight was a lot higher than I wanted it to be yesterday, but not too bad - and no higher than I expected. Anyway, it's good to finally KNOW, so that if I feel I have to adjust, I can do it in a healthy way. When the doctors don't tell you, you have no idea whether you're doing something wrong, or doing everything right; whether you're eating too much, not enough, AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH.
An Irish adventure, how excellent! Dublin is great, and only a short hop for me from Manchester too :o)
Ooh if it was Halloween weekend it would double as a birthday celebration for me - I was 4 hours short of being a halloween baby!
Bobcat driving, why do I just picture Lorraine saddled up on a giant mountain lion and galloping around the garden?!
Discovered date for 2009 Gourmet food festival in Kinsale (9th -11th October)
Clashes with Octocon this year but who knows about next since I don't have the dates for either
Can you tell I'm shilling the south coast in October?
I love the Serious Black stories...What a great name for a cat.
Just after 9 and I am up dressed, steak has been cooked, Bengals fed, litter done, and all the morning e-mail.
Going to ride shortly, then into work. More secret project. I'm keeping a day to day log of the thing, so you can read it at some point. (here's the nutshell since you know who is busy now and won't be looking: Books. LOTS. No Order. Had idiot help over the years. Chaos. Google: Delicious Monster.)
Hmmm. :)
Not a secret project, but if you google ferocious monster instead, my cat is the number one hit.
Ah ha! :)
Or, if you prefer, Ah haaaaa.
Oh, how I covet being part of that project! Based on what turns up in the writings, it has to be a fascinating collection. If you ever need a cataloger-on-call....
http://s12.photobucket.com/albums/a212/howlokitty/?action=view¤t=n5028845_40819539_7698745.jpg
He is my Super Serious Gothic Superstar.
I'm grumpy today because my old, crappy roomie broke my washer, and now I have to try to go into the metal casing and turn the knob with pliers. After 15 minutes of that today, I'm about to have a hissy fit. And, I still haven't succeeded in starting the washer. I want clean clothes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In my despair yesterday I actually thought "A million girls would kill for his job" which is only funny if you've read Devil Wears Prada...
Oh, that sounds like a BIG project! I mean I think we have a lot of books in our house, but that's only 3 bookcases full!!
Now I want to ask a million cataloger-type questions, but will spare you and everyone else. Back to writing very dull reports about cataloging instead.
Counting down the minutes til the end of the working day now, and all I can think about is having a very early night.
Went to a concert on Monday (Pearl Jam - reliving my teen years!), going out on a 'school night' seems to wash me out for the rest of the week these days - who stole all of my enery and where did they hide it?
My ears hurt. Badly. Why did my mother have to get that drum set for Will?
I would love to help with such secret project but I would be more than useless. Leave me with a pile of books to sort and I would HAVE to start and read them all to make sure they are put together in the right sections.
With a collection that size you might never hear or see me ever again.
Oh, and that software looks awesome. Must try it out sometime.
I wouldn't kill, but I'd catalogue.
Hey, that ought to be a tee shirt.
You are right, Jess! We need more Fiendish t-shirts.
And Fiends, please forgive any unusually egregious spelling errors - I got my first pair of contacts yesterday and am wondering if the doctor's strategy will work. She's trying to give me bifocal vision, and so far I just have bugger all up close, fuzzy everywhere else, and double vision to boot. I'll give it a week and see if the dominant eye thing works. Apparently my left eye is the ninja of the pair.
If you're really going to be in Dublin 2010, I will just have to get organized to be there as well. The 2010 Reunion des Fiends could be in Ireland. Then maybe N. would be able to join as well. We'll have to discuss i8t with her.
Well, Fluffy, you spelled "egregious" right. The ninja eye must work.
Yep, that's a five-dollar word.
I just went into a Tim Horton's for the first time to buy donuts (request from my ailing guy). Felt like some sort of rite of passage here.
And my son is at a friend's house for the evening, his first sleep-over, and today we got a letter from my daughter's soon-to-be Kindergarten teacher.
So maybe it's not just Tim Horton's what feels like rite of passage.
Evening all, and a nice mild one it is too.
Delicious Monster? Delicious indeed, my idea of heaven on the seventh floor.
I've just been catching up with Mr Izzard's shenanigans for the day and thought that just in case there's anyone here who doesn't know that he's in the middle of a super-human charity "run" (makes it sound like a 10k effort) it's worth checking out his YouTube video diary, his blog and/or his tweets. So far he's done 21 marathons! As if there was ever any doubt, the man is a god
Not a mild evening at all. Tornadoes all around here. Very exciting. Currenly under a tornado warning, meaning heavy rotation, but I don't see it coming down.
Watch until midnight.
Weather Girl is strange, but I love this.
How do tornadoes affect the bees?
Well, if one hits a hive, think Dorothy. If a tree falls on it that would be bad too.
Otherwise they just do indoor chores.
OK I now have an image of all the bees wearing shiny red shoes and clicking their heels together!!
Had a chance to look at the software. Now have a million +1 questions...
You can always e-mail me...
My image was of bees in Stepford Wives getup..cute.
Is there a PC version of Delicios Monster? I need it.
Wendy, Serious Black is very cute.
Q wasn't kidding about the tornados in her area
See this
But if a hive Goes Dorothy lands on someone, do the bees start humming "Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead"?
That's when they're not humming the Song of the Volga Boatmen, of course. Which they do if they're Russian. Which...your bees aren't. Why am I even following this train of thought? Half a bottle of shiraz, that's why.
I think it would depend on who the hive landed on.
Wild weather day was exciting. Nothing happened in my immediate area but some wild times in one of my old neighborhood.
Ah shoot. I forgot to buy a lottery ticket today.
Yumm... Delicous.
Louisa, all those red shoes would keep lots and lots of leprechauns very busy.
Just saw District 9. Go see it. Just. Go. See. It.
Hooray for Ireland! That is just awesome!
Boss sure did pick a heck of a time to start reading, didn't he? LOL
Fluffy: I'm not sure how long it takes to adapt to that kind of vision, but once you do you won't think twice about it. For many years (9th grade to about age 32ish) I was near-sighted in only my right eye. Because I didn't wear my glasses, my eyes just adapted to my right one being dominant up close and my left one dominant far away.
When I was tested for eye dominance to determine if I would shoot left handed or right handed it shocked the heck out of the folks testing it. They came up right eye dominant, but my right eye couldn't see the targets so I had them back up 10 feet or so and retest. Sure enough, my left eye came up dominant then!
~the Other Sharon
Ariandalen, I think you'll find that leprechauns are lazy, good-for-nothing, gold-hoarding tricksters that leave all the hard labour to the poor elves, simple wee folk who haven't quite got the concept of labour exploitation. There were rumours of them starting a union but the devious shoemaker quelled that pronto with the frankly paltry offering of shiny new clothes. It doesn't take much to distract an elf.
Will the 237 pictures I took today fit all on my hard disk?
Suspense...
Suspense...
Suspense...
Yes!
I might have to delete a few things in order to be able to access them, but that is another thing altogether.
Victory!
Picture spam is near!
Yay! I very much look forward to picture spam from you!
Woohoo! \o/ Spam me, baby. Spam me.
With all the talk of tornadoes, last night I ended up dreaming there was one outside my window. The dream ended up being a romantic comedy that took pace in a root cellar. Maybe my dream life is trying to tell me I need some actual romance in my real life.
In a root cellar? Something is bound to sprout...
Processed 50 pictures from San Paolo Fuori le Mura and uploading onto Flickr...
Shall start on the processing of the Vatican museums pictures after dinner I think. Or tomorrow. Or both.
OK, completely off-topic & slightly cheeky enquiry addressed to th eexpert knitters amoung the fiends:
I would really like to be able to get a pair of these as a gift for my mum.
The problem is, I can't knit (unless what you want is a neverending scarf with holes in) and my mum can't any more as it hurts her shoulder, so getting a kit wouldn't work.
So, is there anyone who would be interested / have time / have energy / have knitting skills to knit them for me, if I bought a kit? (Obviously I'd neeed to pay you for your time & effort)Ideally I'd like to be able to give them to her as a christmas present but they could be for her birthfay (May) if there's no time
(So as not to clog up the comments too much, maybe anyone interested could send me an e-mail / Facebook message or DM me)
Thank you :-)
Marjorie, I have two of the four qualifications - you guess which two. :)
And I do want to make a pair of those sometime. But if I did it there is absolutely positively no chance they'd be done by Christmas. Unless maybe you meant 2010? Or possibly 2011?
I'm answering here so anyone else potentially interested can see my reply, btw. If nobody has all four of the qualifications, let me know and we can talk about it.
Also answering here, for the same reason as Phiala. I have three (or maybe 2.5) out of four, and would definitely build on that fourth one by making these. But December 2009? Nuh-uh. The May birthday is perhaps possible. Also willing to continue the conversation.
Want a heating pad and mellowness. Have a 5 yr old and swim class.
Luckily he's sweet and brought me my tea earlier when I had left it in the dining room and was curled up on his bed. He also read me "Click Clack Moo"....sweet boy!
Motrin can kick in at any time now.
Re: socks...I'm none of the four, but have several friends who might be at least 2. Want me to inquire?
Those are awesome socks...both in the way they look, and the way they
reference the Nine Tailors!
delurking just to say OH MY. Isn't the sauna properly insulated, then??? While it was being built I sent Boss some bits of advice & sauna lore I thought might be interesting. And now I feel somehow responsible :-D
Hi Johanna! And welcome.
It is built right, not sure why the water came thru, but I suspect that there was a LOT of water involved.
Our builder is checking things out....
Writing a new blog now. A sad one.
