Two Large White Dogs!
I promised last night I would do a lovely blog on our new House Guest, Pearl, who is, like Cabal, a white German Shepard, but I ended up at the barn tech'ing horses for Melissa (I know that's what we call it in music, no idea what they call it in the horse world, you know, getting horses, grooming them, saddling, lunging...) and got home with enough energy to feed Bengals, but not myself, and fall into bed. No blog.
My Boss however, was more on the ball. (Not unusual) Here is his BLOG on our new friend.
I know this first picture is Venus hiding in the Tube that Kitty From Neverwear sent her, but you didn't think I could possibly start with DOGS, did you????
Venus hides in there when she doesn't like her food. In protest. Venus is there a LOT lately, despite my best efforts.
Pearl is lovely. She belongs to my friend Melissa, and is only visiting for a while, until Melissa moves to her new place. Her manners are perfect, and she is sweet. I think Cabal likes her, but as my Boss said, is slightly confused.
They do spend time locked in what they have come, Cabal anyway, to call Doggie Jail. In the Kennel. Not all the time, it would be cruel to keep them locked away all the time, with no room to run around as they were meant to, in such a small space. Heh.
Yeah. The Ritz of Dog Kennels. Pretty SURE they aren't suffering.
Pretty sure I am liking having her around. And just as sure, on nights when there are meant to be storms, that I will be camping out at my Boss's, while he is away.
Speaking of camping, I do have something to tell you, so you can get used to the idea. Those of you who know me well know that "Camping" for me means waiting for room service at a hotel in the morning, but this summer, I am going to go REAL CAMPING.
Yes. In a tent. With the horses, and my horse friends, who apparently know how this works. No cell phone. No internet. No INDOORS! I worry slightly, but it is time to do new things, and this is one of them.
(Ok, re-reading that, let me be clearer: I do not believe the horses will get tents, not sure where they spend nights, but it will NOT be in my tent)
Love, Two Dogs and Adventure,
Lorraine

Tick now, come back later. When I stop seeing double.
Hey, camping should be fun. I think you'll have a lovely time in the sweet beautiful outdoors. Just, ahm, watch out for spiders, mmmmkay?
Loving the Cabal and Pearl pictures! They are gorgeous dogs!
I've never been real camping before. I just don't like the idea of no bathroom. Perhaps I'm just a wimp.
Ooh, camping. With horsies. Could be lots of fun:-)
and the dogs are gorgeous
Camping can be fun. Esp with experienced campers.
Poor Venus...wonder what's going on with her?
I just read, in the Cornell vet school's cat newsletter, that cats have a bad reaction to lilies, as in eating the plant, any part of the plant, can cause kidney failure. Even the pollen appears to be harmful!
They recommended the following site for more info.
http://www.noliliesforcats.com/site/view/169877_Home.pml
Was gonna say, A dog tunnel? And then I realised it was a cat face peeping out. Order and sense restored. Phew.
That's, like, white-collar Doggie Jail. What are they in for? Dog license fraud? Treat embezzlement? Bath evasion? (No, I know. I'm not laughing, either. Hey, not all my jokes can be winners. The important thing is, I tried. Right?)
Camping adventure! With horses! You will have fun. And I will enjoy reading all about it from the comfort of indoors. ;)
When I was very little, we used to go camping on the beach in Delaware every summer. That was kinda fun, actually: you walk up and down the beach all day finding stuff, sit around the bug lamp at night. Wake up with laryngitis from the sea air and do it all over again. :)
tick-a-doodle-do
time to make the donuts.
I hate camping, more work than normal, conditions aren't the best, you feel dirty all the time, bugs both flying and crawling, but hey, that is just me who did a lot of camping as a kid and young adult. But you have fun now, hear!
And hopefully horses aren't scared of storms the way Cabal is...
Spiders don't scare me. BEARS scare me.
It will be, uh, different. Never done it before. We will ride all day, then go back to the, uh, tents at night. Where DOES one use the bathroom??? How about BATHS? Where does food come from???
Jess, actually, we DO have a dog tunnel. Will try and Kitty to do vid next week of it. They love it.
And I thought your jokes were funny.
Thanks Janet, for your ringing endorsement of this, lol.
And Nathilie, it is NOT GOING TO STORM OR RAIN while I camp! The very thought. And there will be no BUGS in my woods.
Well, I know how to ward off bears, but spiders are unavoidable and I might possibly be the TEENIEST bit arachnophobic.
FabLo, I have to say, as support for camping, that there is something very lovely about the quiet. Away from all the noises we don't even notice. Takes me some time to wind down...but very peaceful. And, camping with friends....bet there will be good food, and lots of laughing. Like most things, the discomforts are there, but so is the fun. And accomplishment!
DOGS!!! So cute!!
tick
No bugs? What type of plastic woods are these? Besides, from what you told me, there should be at least mosquitoes, so take plenty of repellent.
Odd looking big white dog in the first picture
Did a lot of camping in my late teens...actually spent the summer traveling and living out of a Ford Ranger. Ah, the good ol' days. (right!)
Not so into camping these days but we'll do it with ben in the desert somewhere w/ a telescope. Seems like so much work when there are these hotel things now.
Depending on where you're camping, sometimes if it's an official campsite, they have "facilities" but otherwise you're squattin' in the woods baby!
We're lucky my dad has a cabin near Yosemite in the Sierras so we can "rough" it without really roughing it. It has no power but it has propane lights, stove and hot water heater :D
Dabbler, I agree. Real quiet and real darkness, it's so peaceful! It's amazing to just lie on your back wrapped up in a blanket in the dark and look at millions more stars than you can usually see, and count satellites and shooting stars. I was so lucky to once see the northern lights from a campsite in Wales :o)
*shudder* camping. I hope you have fun...
Nice that Cabal has a friend to play with!
This comment has been removed by the author.
Venus needs specially time with Mummy methinx. Where she gets to play with Mummy on her own, and is maybe given some chicken and is told she is the speshulest of them all. (just my two bits of kibble worth)
Two white dogs are fun!
Guess I was a bit negative. Ok, you can have lots of fun camping with great fiends. The cleanliness won't be a problem cause you will all smell the same, outdoorsy, horsey, and sweaty. You can take a mini-bath using a basin and water in the tent. You and the bears will have potty habits the same as in; do bears sh*t in the woods? Make sure you check the ceiling of the tent as that is where the critters like to hang out. But with fiends all negatives turn out positive.
Yes. Remain positive. Do not, f'rinstance, let Birdchick tell you about chiggers before you go. Watch something like Snow White instead. And remember to take one of those pocket mirrors! For making flashy signals to the park rangers if you get lost. Learned that one in Girl Scouts. (Bear in mind that all of this is coming from the one Girl Scout who could not make her horsey go.)
Has Venus been to the vet yet? Did we find out anything?
Dog tunnel! This I must see. :D
OSS, seeing double does not sound good. You okay?
Jess, they use dog tunnels in agility training. Grendel used to do that when he was young and his hips worked - but he liked climbing things better, and going down the slide was the most wonderful thing ever. No really. I have pictures.
Chiggers are a southern problem. Camping is fun. Camping with horses sounds FUN. Tents are good, and the rest of it takes a bit of getting used to but you are going with good people and will cope just fine.
I suppose I should put a shirt on before I go down to the bar, shouldn't I?
On the one hand, I might get free beer.
On the other hand, my boss is probably down there.
Shirt. Definitely.
Oh, er, that seeing double thing was just my lame joke about the dogs.
I've gotten chigger bites in Iowa.
I am way too fond of indoor plumbing to be a camper, but your trip does sound like fun, Lorraine.
Oh, okay. Did I mention I've been out in the sun all day???
Poor Venus hides from scary food.
What are chiggers?
I love camping...but we have wombats not bears. Wombats won't eat you but they will barrel though a campsite at times. Spiders and snakes? No problem (yeah, right)
Chiggers are tiny red insects that get under your skin and then you itch. Didn't know they were a Southern thing - I thought they were universal!
Camping can be great for many things. There are conversations around campfires, in the woods, in the quiet after a fun and tiring day that do not occur anywhere else.
Well, IMO, anyway. Feeling sort of nostalgic about my camping days. Don't tell Steve, he'll think that means I want to go :-)
It seems to me that a gaggle of horses might keep the bears at bay. That's my idea and I'm sticking to it. Plus, camping with people who know what they're doing sounds just fine.
Poor Cabal and his inhumane jail... Is that, what; a half acre of lovely soft grass and a doggy-climby-thingy? Oh, the vulpinity!
And Jess, your jokes made me laugh out loud. Bath evasion... hee hee...
I ordered myself some lasers for a Mother's Day present. I couldn't find an actual ninja, so they will have to do...
The itching from chiggers is because they lay eggs under ones skin. Disgusting, but true..
Just back from the Barn and pretty darned tired. I may be sleeping already. Sometimes I do type in my sleep. Even Detective Benson is not going to be enough to keep this girl awake..
the bengals need an ipad to help with the world domination... ipad v cat
Fluffy, you slay me--"Oh, the vulpinity" hehehehehe.....
Q--Camping? W/Horses? Got two words for you:
Handy Wipes
Trust me on this one. Mass quantities. With aloe is good :) But check ahead of time to find out which one works best w/your skin.
And some quart size or larger ziploc bags. At least one to put the used handy wipes in, for example (um, I'm talking about giving oneself cat baths here, people. Stop w/the disgusted faces!)
Have a grand time; you will get great riding experience methinks.
Oh yes, Lys. Lots of handywipes, the kind in the single-wipe foil pouches. Great for hands. You can also get full-body size ones intended for bathing - originally a military product, now available at camping stores and even Walmart. Better than the little ones for a cat-bath since they're bigger, and formulated for that purpose.
I can't think of anything else really crucial. Your friends will have a list, probably, since they know where you're going and what conditions will be.
Chiggers are actually grosser than that, but I'll refrain unless anyone is actually interested.
Ya'll are putting me off this camping thing. Might have to rethink. There could be a REASON I have never done it..
I am going to a rodeo in a week too.
I am seriously getting myself into some strange things lately...
No, no... ignore all those curmudgeons who don't like camping.
Horses! And friends! And riding outdoors!
It will be all kinds of fun.
G'morning, by the way.
Camping is like many other things...rescuing Bengals, PAing, learning to ride well...It's hard work and sometimes you get dirty, or even bitten (!) but it's SO worth it in the end.
And good morning to you, as well! And Phiala.
Off to drive 5 hours and send my brain to the cleaners for the weekend.
Morning, then!
Well, for better or for worse, I am kind of committed and must do this. I adore my Horse People Friends, and trust them to take care of City Girl.
Which is funny, as Kitty calls me Country Girl, and is trying, along with another Assistant Friend, to get me to come out and DO some City for a weekend.
I should do them consecutive weekends, for comparison purposes.
I do need to get out more. Mim turned on my, uh, back massager, last night. Worried me to no end. CLEARLY I need to get out more.
HeHe. Or stay in more ;-)
Maybe you should do the City & the Camping 2 weeknds apart, so you have a weekend in the middle to appease leopards who have been Cruelly Abandoned.
That is a point, Leopards are not going to approve of me being away.
However, if you do the camping, you will know how to survive when the apocalypse comes. ON A HORSE. Think of that.
Hey, remember when I said a thousand years ago that I'd wander round my parents' and find some plants that might work in your yard? I think you might could grow a Lenten Rose. They like shade, and damp, and they get this dusty purple flower (there are pink and white varieties, too). That might be something interesting to try.
This Checkerboard Lily is cool, too, but hard to keep happy, to hear my folks tell it. This is the first year it's looked this good. Likes a lot of sun, too.
Camping might not be too bad if it's for only one night and you have transportation to a good hotel in the morning if things don't work out. I went camping once - for one night, when I was much younger. We didn't have tents, so I lay awake all night wondering if animals would walk across my face. Now I have cats, so it's no longer something I'm afraid of. It's good to be able to say you tried it. Maybe you will love it.
Have you checked that this is just a horsies & camping trip, and not Armageddon in which you are classed as one of the four? Has Boss run out of tea, and decided to bring about the apocolypse instead?
I am a non-camper as well. It's not the outdoors I don't like, or the bugs. It's the lack of walls and a door that locks. I feel too exposed sleeping in a tent. But if I could do it for 17 days, you can do it too. You'll have fun!
Phiala--oh, yeah....definitely tub-size container. We didn't ever waste our time (or increase our waste) w/the wee foil wrapped thingies! :)
Q--oh, you will have a grand time! As you said, it's an adventure based on trust. Besides.....you stayed onsite at Arizona RenFaire at least once, right? How bad could it be?
Back from my trip after Adventures. No time to recount now, but adventury. No camping tho.
Lys, I do both. The little foil-wrapped ones (wet wipes! sheesh!) go in my pocket, camera bag, whatever, for cleaning hands as needed. I also take a pack of the big bath-type wipes. Those come in a big tub.
The foil ones are very convenient and don't dry out over time.
Okay, must dash!
'No cell phone. No internet. No INDOORS!'
It's too dangerous. No good will come of it. Don't do it.
Lots to catch up on since my computer has deaded.
Hope your camping trip goes well! I agree with Lys about the necessity of Handi-Wipes. They just make life better when camping. Bug spray is also good. And if there's a chance of rain, a tarp for below your tent and a tarp to cover it with is also a Good Thing. I also suggest an air mattress because the ground it is hard, especially after riding all day.
I'm gonna see Boss tomorrow:) Yay!
Not going to try to catch up with comments, but thought I would drop it...as I have been absentee all week. Hubby and kids home sick most of the week. Everyone doing much better now.
I think Pearl and Cabal look so sweet together. And the doggie jail is more like the "house arrest" that people like Martha Stewart do for sentences. :-)
Camping should be so much fun! I can't wait to hear about it. We are going to go camping this summer sometime too. Here. http://www.knoebels.com/family-vacation.asp
Damm freaking VOLCANO.
Sigh.
Martin, no, really, tell me what you REALLY think of the idea????!!!
(Actually I am kind of with you on this one. Trouble will come of it.)
Yes, I am still working. (Boat, she mutters. Looking for boat.)
Boat. In Iceland? Saw the satellite photos - LOTS of ash headed to Europe.
I'm trying to go to bed. Quite sleepy - just checked the radar loop. As per spec, there are thunderstorms over Abilene. Human barometer, me. Nighty-night, Fiends.
I love camping. Hope you find you love it, too.
Oh, and the corollary for 'tech' may very well be 'groom' as the groom did/does all the things you mention.
Heard a journo talking on radio here this morning Quiche - he was getting back to England on a cargo boat. Apparently even places on cargo boats are at a premium.
Had that idea. Checked every cargo ship possibly leaving Iceland. Amanda has an AMAZING tour manager who is finding paths I didn't think of. If it can be done, it will.
How long tho, does this Volcano GO??
The article I read said it could affect flights for months. :-\
well, no flights are going from Australia to Europe until the middle of next week when they will look at the situation again.
Shame she can't go on a cargo ship - I imagine Amanda would have a ball with that.
Now I have this vision of Amanda entertaining sailors with her ukulele on a huge cargo boat...
I wonder if Jason is stranded as well (he could fly the other way around the world, I suppose).
And according to Hera, the volcano will go until all Iceland's debts are cleared. It could take a while.
Isn't it the best image Nat?
I'm really envious, because AFP met up with one of my fave Aussie women, Marieke Hardy in Iceland. I would have just loved to be there.
tick. :waves:
Looking at Pearl and Cabal again, Cabal seems to be saying "Hm, she is a real dog. I should be a real dog. I don't know how to be a real dog ffs, I am a writer dog, this is all very confusing, I wonder what George R.R. Martin would make of this..."
PS I LOVE camping. It always seems really awkward when you are there but when you get back it seems like you've had the best time EVER. Go. Experience new things.
As someone who actually camps outside for a living, I can offer you a few bits of advice:
-On the Bears: Bill Bryson "A Walk in the Woods". All you need to know.
-Chiggers: Nope. They don't lay eggs under your skin. They inject an enzyme into your skin to liquify it so the larva can drink you. No worries there.
-If a skunk comes in your tent looking for a snack, do NOT jump around screaming. Just go outside and wait for it to leave.
-Bathrooming: Wipes are a Good Thing. Make SURE you do not have Vicks Vaporub Tissues. Big Mistake. J.Henderson Artifacts (.com) makes handy devices known as chamberpots so you can have your own bathroom right in your tent! They can be decorated with skulls to scare away the snakes and spiders. Oops, did I say snakes and spiders? That's TOTALLY wrong, you won't run into those I'm sure.....
-Bring LOTS of socks. It's not a towel you need to travel the Galaxy, it's an extra pair of warm, fuzzy socks.
DRY, warm, fuzzy socks.
I will add to Sister Tracy's list:
-They make neat little shower stall tents, which are fabulous for the port-a-potties. (Not so great for showering, unless you can manage to get the solar water heater bags to work...but I wouldn't know about that.)
-Band-aids are a must, and some of that band-aid rinse stuff can be damned useful.
-Assuming you are packing light because you are going by horse, try to find those compact instant inflate sleeping pads for under your sleeping bag, you'll thank me later.
~As for the bears, speak in low dulcet tones, do not run, make yourself big, and never shoot a bear, as it will probably still maul you before it feels the wound.
~As to the spider and snakes that you will most certainly not see...keep you tent flap zipped at all times. Get in and out quickly and always keep your tent flap closed.
Shake out your shoes before putting them on! Scorpions might be inside. I do that one all the time, whether I'm in the woods or not.
I am glad no one is flying home through a volcanic ash plume. You don't want to be on a plane in that stuff, given it might stop flying.
Zippers on tents??? They make tents with zippers? Mine is a piece of canvas thrown over a couple wooden poles. I suppose zippers might help with the skunk problem too.....
BTW, making yourself BIG helps with Mountain Lions too. Get the kitties to show you how to poof, they are experts.
We even got neat 8x8 tents that you can attach to each other in any pattern you want making little tent row houses so you can go between them without getting rained on.
Was thinking of Q as I read a movie review for "The Eclipse." It says the movie (set in Ireland) will make you want to board the first flight to Dublin.
And I predict the airlines will fire up those supercomputers and find some safe routes (maybe not SHORT routes) very soon, or they will be majorly hurting.
Camping is sounding more and more interesting!
Speaking of interesting (for a given value of interesting,) I'm canceling my session at the Apple Store today, putting on some bug repellent and going out to plant about a gazillion plants, as we are sposed to get rain the next two days.
PG, I love the "writer dog (ffs!)/real dog" thing!
My sister is strange. In a good way, and I love her dearly, but it IS an odd life she leads, says the pot, calling the kettle black.
Fear camping now.
Tired today. Much work tho, and horses tonight.
Yes, wipes! Excellent. I was once an avid camper and backpacker, but only discovered the magic of a Tub o' Wipes when doing field work much later.
Occasionally we'd hike into some remote wilderness, and after a day or two of this 30-lb-pack-on-my-back thing, and here come a team of horses! And those folks never looked as dirty as I felt (although I didn't mind that dirt, it's much nicer than, say, dust rhinos, or cleaning your stove).
I always thought that, when encountering a bear or a mountain lion, the thing to do is say, in a voice one reserves for one's cats "who's a lovely bear/cat then? yes, you are a nice nice bear. there there lovely bear"
Do you mean to say this technique does not work?
We're going to go camping in Joshua Tree in May so ben can see stars w/ his telescope. Too much ambient light around here. We've been talking about doing that...Q reminded me to plan it. I will not hold her responsible if it sucks though ;-)
I will hold her responsible for me going to see Christopher Moore tonight though! He's doing a signing/talk at Kepler's which is where I met boss oh so many years ago. Love that store.
HA! Q's sister is strange? Well! Let me introduce you all to my sisters: The (Reasonably) Good Witch of the North and the Wicked (actually now more Annoying) Witch of the South.
And then there are the Four Hopeless Brothers, only one of which, thank Fod, has reproduced.
The spouse is going on about dinner. Wtf? If he wanted dinner he should not have given Madame Floofie the vodka. Hm.
Went to dinner. Ate tortellini. Killed the thread. Vodka wore off. Bought some books at B&N.
You didn't kill the thread, Fluff. I did. Just now. I kill all the threads. Watch:
*stabs*
I'm sitting in a bookstore waiting for christopher moore. Joyous evening!
Thanks for introducing me to his books Q!
OUCH! that hurt jess.
It's not dead, yet!
You will have a good time camping, Ms. Fabulous. You might decide it's not for you, but you will still have a good time.
Hi, Pirate Alice! Welcome to Fiendom! Here is your white, buckled jacket. The supplies for personalizing it are around here...somewhere. Have fun, and keep commenting. :)
Hmm. Must've put the darned thing in reverse.
*bats*
OMFG (to quote how he signed my copy of Bite Me), Chris Moore is so incredibly hysterical!
I asked him to do a FoodPorn interview...he didn't seem into actually going to a meal w/ me--maybe you can vouch for me Q ;-)
But my face hurt after his talk, he just talks about stuff--not a reading, just stuff. SOOO funny! He speaks just like his books read. No disconnect there.
I'm sleepy but first food. I dind't have time to eat before the signing...grumble.
Zombie thread!
Not quite dead, not quite alive yet (only got up half an hour ago)...
Robyn, I drove down to Austin last year to see him when he was doing the "Fool" tour and he was incredibly funny. I was quite sad he passed Texas by this year.
Did he mention Condi Rice's junk? In connection with NyQuil?
Oh Fods, this was weird -
dream last night - I was (one of) Boss's assistant in an exotic city. He lives in a small apartment in a tall building and I live in even smaller apartment couple of floors down from him.
He never says anything but I have a distinct impression I'm doing this wrong - like bringing him coffee in the afternoon (when it should be tea and maybe I'm an hour late with this thing).
His apartment is messy and I'm wondering what happened to the Housekeeper. In all this I am wearing Ugg boots and a bath robe (I hate ugg boots - what was I thinking?!)
Anyone has Any idea what my subconscious is trying to tell me?
Weirdness.
Sounds like the sort of dream I used to have about going to school in my pj's...
Have you perhaps been drinking too much coffee?
heh Sally, doesn't everyone go to school in PJs at least once?
No, not coffee but I did have a completely unnecessary Smirnoff ice yesterday. that could be it.
So, who's watching Amanda Palmer's gig in Glasgow at on ustream ?
The sound isn't terribly good.
I'm trying to, but the sound is bad & keeps cutting out entirely.
No, sound is bad for me, too - better for speech thanusic I think...
It's so quiet, i thought maybe i missed a new post!
We're off by ourselves to dinner and a hotel tonight...va va voom! Ben's having a sleepover next door. We're going to Manresa. I've been wanting to go for ages!
Have a lovely rest of your day/night/weekend. I'll check back in to see what trouble you fiends have caused tomorrow ;-)
Camping will help you appreciate home all the more.
