First Day Of Derby!! Among Other Wonders.

This weekend had a whole lot of wonderful going on, and I am nowhere near recovered enough from it to do a proper post, but the bit that was most wonderful for me was the Skating. Specifically: Roller Derby. With Real Roller Derby Girls.

In this first picture, you can't SEE that I have skates on, but I can tell you, yes, I do. I am thinking Charlie's Angel's. This was the First Skating Ever, in the parking lot in front of House on the Rock, which as first places to skate ever, is not a bad place to begin.

This is Joan of Dark on the right, and Kerrie on the left.

Safety is important when skating Derby, I am learning. And having people who actually CAN skate, NOT in skates holding your hands, is a good way to start. This will be helpful for both you, and the innocents around you.

If you survive Day 1 at HOTR, you may be lucky enough to move onto Day 2. At a proper Roller Rink, where you can skate AFTER the real practice. After watching the real practice for a couple of hours, you know, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that you are not yet ready for that. Your goals become your own. Mine were simply: Get the skates on, and skate without holding an Rollers Girls hands. (May have been working against myself on that one.)

Got the gear on and am feeling pretty tough. Yeah, I do do this all the time. (That's Jane Ire on the left.

It's important to Plan stratagy. And rest. Often. Becuase your calves are going to be screaming calves of doom. They will hurt. A lot. It is Derby, and there will be pain. Best to understand this up front. I didn't much get hipchecked, skated upon, run over, punched or hit. Just skated around. Painful enough.

Here's Madison's Allie Gator showing me how when you think you are going to FALL on your, say ASS, crouch down and get LOW. Oddly enough, this works. And you feel really cool doing it.

I love this. I want to skate. I grew up a figure skater. I can learn this. I can get FIT enough to do this.

Watch me:

(No, literally, get it???)

Almost as Magic as Derby was this: My Boss brought Me, Joan of Dark, Danguy, Pat Rothfuss and Tom with him on the Carousal at House on the Rock.

Which is not something anyone will ever forget. Are we smiling like the phrase "from ear to ear" was just invented?

Why yes, we are.

Love and Derby,
Lorraine

  1. Wheeeee. You are having FUN.

Your ice skating skills should transfer over to roller skating really well shouldn't they?

Took me a while, but I finally spotted you on the carousel. My Fods, that is an awesome thing.

I'm glad you had such a wonderful weekend.

  2. Looks absolutely delightful. I tried skating last year sometime, and was just dreadful at it. I used to do it as a child and never got the hang of it. But as a teenager I got blades, and did that quite regularly. So at the rink, I upgraded to the blades and very quickly became the queen of the rink. I love my some roller blading. Skating...not so much. But it is nice to see you have such a lovely time!

  3. and here i worried that HotR would be all work and no play for you.

    enjoy skating again!

i discovered last weekend that ice skates are way more affordable than i imagined, and so think perhaps this is the winter we find more ways to be outdoors. the city has a lake, after all, on which everyone can skate, and most neighborhoods have outdoor rinks. i would expect the monsters to be literally skating circles around me in no time.

  4. Awesome! Looks like a great weekend, even if much work.

My bunch that went to HoTR have LOTS of pictures, some of you and Boss and the gang on the carousel. Your faces are all lit up like little kids.

I'm still suffering a case of the sads from not being able to go. A bunch of my crew were flying out of Minneapolis today, so at least I got to see them last night- and feed some of them breakfast today.

  11. Wait, Maurna, I met you this weekend, didn't I??? I kept trying to figure out where I knew that NAME!

Hit me over the head with it next time, I wanted to hang out some!!!!

This is full of so much awesome. Those roller derby girls kick ass. (Also, LOVE the pink striped socks.) One of my good friends from college is a roller derby girl in PA/NJ. If you're ever around the area, let me know.

And OMG, that might be the coolest carousel EVER. Yay for having such a great time. :-)

  13. Yes, the carousel was AMAZINGLY orange. This I can see despite not being there. I mean that is a HELL of an orange carousel. Whoa.

  14. OMG!! You got to ride the Carousel!! It's so beautiful. I would have spent the entire time just staring at it. It's so amazing.

You were kicking ass on the skates! I'm so impressed. I would be on my ass the entire time.

  15. What Sally says, wheeeeeee! Wow you are a fast learner, looks like you're getting to grips with skating already!

Yay you did get to ride the carousel - it looks amazing, just as magical as I pictured it! HOTR is definitely on my road trip itinerary (one of these days....)

I did another ghost tour this weekend. Not as fun as the Dublin Ghost Bus, of course :o)

  16. I bubbled my way back through Minneapolis and home again. Think I told everyone (flight attendant, concierge at hotel, waitresses) I met they need to go to HOTR. Most of them had never heard of it. Of course, if won't be the very-special-once-in-a-lifetime-event when they go, but....still.

MeDeadly, those skates look easy when you do it. I know that ain't so!

  17. Oops, sorry. RED carousel.

Waiting waiting waiting waiting for election results! GO CHAFEE GO!

  19. Ain't easy AT ALL, this Roller Skating. Rather very hard in fact. Going again on Friday.

I brought Kitty to ZUMBA tonight. A Steph class, figured she may as well start hard and fast. I think she liked it. AT any rate she had energy to cook dinner for us when we got home.

    I didn't.

Did I tell you I did flying lead changes on Monday? I did. VERY cool. You do them on a horse, and sort of, well change leads while cantering.

And on a horse as big as BIG AL, you get really powerful cantering straight.

    Good to be home.

Missing my Joan of Dark and Jane Ire, and Karrie and Dill tho. They all went home today.

I may be sleep typing here.

  20. I was grinning from ear to ear just reading that! :)

  21. This election has me in a certain degree of pain. [O_O]

  22. I am noodle now. Just hottubbed with Kitty. That hot tub has so saved me. Again. And Again. And again.

    ReplyDelete
  23. We have no hot tub but ... I layer my shirts at night to stay warm ... and ... nah, that ain't gonna compare ...

    My gubernatorial guy won! WHOOT.

  24. Slowly catching up on the world.

    Or not.

Glad you all had such fun!

  25. Skating - yay!

Well, I missed HOTR due to a week long hospital stay. But I'm home and recovering, so that is all good. But still sad to have missed it. And given $$ to the airlines :-(

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh no! What happened? Sorry, I clearly have catching up to do.

  28. Quiche! On skates...awesome! It brought me back to my teenage years and the local rink and the speed team. I had sooo wanted to be in Derby, but by the time I was old enough its popularity had fizzled out. Boo! You'll pick it up quick enough...become one with your skates and the next thing you know you'll be flying round the floor doing circles around the others! (I so love watching you try/learn new things.)
PS: That carousel is magical and divine!

  29. Yowzers, Jane, that's really nasty stuff. Glad you are okay.

  30. Jane- Get better!

Some good and bad stuff going on in New Orleans.

    1. Dresden Dolls Show coming UP!!!!! I'm pretty much rolling around on the ground from the excitement.

It is confirmed that I will be teaching at least one class next semester.

I am registered for my classes for next semester.

I am going to see if I can get into a writing workshop in Scotland this summer.

My mouth hurts. I'm not sure how much longer I can ignore the fact that one of my wisdom teeth is crumbling away, but I cannot afford to have it taken care of. I'm going to have to look into my options. Lame.

  31. oh, and nice twirl on skates

  32. Good Morning!!!!

That's it for me. Late-ish for work. I mean, I have BEEN working, but I need t be AT work.

Apporopos of nothing: It is FREEZING here.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Morning! Raining buckets here, all day, they say. Doesn't matter, cause I get to be in the office for 11 hours, with a couple of breaks....

Worth it to have had the days off for HOTR and Minneapolis, though.

  34. We got home last night. What a wonderful week. I'm still in a bit of a daze about it. That is the first time I've seen Kitty, Quiche and Boss together. I didn't think it was possible. I made Ben's teacher insanely jealous this morning by first describing HOTR to her then telling her there were also derby girls there (she just had to retire her skates due to knee injury).

I just uploaded my pics from the week. Lots of dark, blurry, red-lit pictures but i love them nonetheless.

Back to "normal" life now here too. '

It was good to see you, however briefly, Lorraine!!!

  35. Great photos...and I have to ask, has Ben had a growth spurt? He seems bigger.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ben is growing like a weed. He's 4' tall now. It's crazy. According to those calculator dealies, he'll be 6'3" when fully grown. (my cousins are 6'4" and 6'5" so it runs in my family)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm glad my eyes weren't deceiving me. He's looking good!

  38. I feel like such a prodigal fiend. Been away too long. Uberwhelmed, I guess.

That first photo really shows off your FIT Lorraine! Fantastic!

  44. The most unique way to celebrate Friendship Day would be hold a gathering for your favorate images, quotes,hd wallpapers, messages, pics, photos and many more... Be that as it may, this thought needs a touch of arranging and exertion as you have to choose where to post(facebook, whatssapp, twitter, instagrame etc..) Once that is done, ring your pals and simply have your indulgence !
