A Thought About Being On Fire....

This wasn't meant to be a blog, it was meant to be a comment, but it got too long, so what the heck. I have thoughts, and feel like I want to get them out here.

The new gym schedule is out, is my big news!! My trainer is teaching a lot more, and at times I can make it! I will take any class Little Evil teaches, which is good as her new classes are STEP classes which I hate. She has promised to use good music tho, so between that and the fact it is HER, I ought to be able to deal with the things.

It doesn't matter what she is teaching, I want to work with her.

We talked about it last night, she and I, and the difference a teacher can make, which I think translates to anything. It's like in music. Someone can get on stage and be technically brilliant but if the passion and LIFE is not there, boring. Or in writing, you can have a lot of information, or a good story, but if you aren't passionate about it, it ain't there.

It's about putting EVERYTHING out there when you do what ever it is you're doing. Every minute. Doesn't matter if you are doing it on stage, or in front of people, or alone in front of your computer, or what ever. If you aren't doing it with passion, if you aren't on fire about it, it is not going to burn. It's not going to be anything more than ordinary, at best. And if it isn't your best, why?

And the difference it can make to you if you are the one learning, the one sitting in the audience, reading the story. If someone throws that spark out there, you can catch it and light a hell of a fire.

There's nothing you can't do if you're on fire.

And if you're on fire, you can make a huge difference to someone else. Throw it OUT there.

Little Evil is like that. There's never a moment when she is teaching a class, or training someone when she isnt giving everything she has to it. Poetry is like that when we ride. Amanda and Jason come to mind on stage, my Boss when he writes. My Derby Friends when they Bout, and when they practice. Giving everything, all the time. Sparks FLY.

I want to get back to living like I am on fire. Not intermittently, but all the time.

There. That's my thought for this morning.

Burn. Brightly.

I think that GK Chesterton said it quite well, in his poem: The Great Minimum, (my personal favorite poem ever) Listen, and read:

It is something to have wept as we have wept,
It is something to have done as we have done,
It is something to have watched when all men slept,
And seen the stars which never see the sun.

It is something to have smelt the mystic rose,
Although it break and leave the thorny rods,
It is something to have hungered once as those
Must hunger who have ate the bread of gods.

To have seen you and your unforgotten face,
Brave as a blast of trumpets for the fray,
Pure as white lilies in a watery space,
It were something, though you went from me today.

To have known the things that from the weak are furled,
Perilous ancient passions, strange and high;
It is something to be wiser than the world,
It is something to be older than the sky.

In a time of sceptic moths and cynic rusts,
And fatted lives that of their sweetness tire,
In a world of flying loves and fading lusts,
It is something to be sure of a desire.

Lo, blessed are our ears for they have heard;
Yea, blessed are our eyes for they have seen:
Let thunder break on man and beast and bird
And the lightning. It is something to have been.

Love and On Fire,
Lorraine

  1. There's a whole lot wrapped up in that.

    Finding what you burn for.

Taking care of yourself so that you can sustain the fire.

Knowing when to take a break so you don't burn out.

  2. Two of the people I consider my teachers moved away in the past year and it really became clear how much I depended on them. And miss them.

    And good morning!

  4. Wow. You are (both) right about the difference a teacher can make.

And I love that poem, too.

i could leave a novel in reply to your post, but i'll keep it simple and just say, IAWTC.
i love that poem. definitely saving it for my scrapbook.

Most likely Dressage would be a foreign word to me without having met Becky Oram. From the second she handed me her old Stubben saddle, I knew.

When I first started my weight loss journey I did a ton of STEP classes. Was totally the youngest one in the room, and wow did those older ladies kick my ass in the beginning. I agree, having a positive modivator/trainer/teacher can make all the difference.

A note about longevity and burnout. Make sure you are doing things for yourself that help you recharge. Massages, accupuncture, chiro, reading time... I often make the mistake of feeling like if I'm not always doing-doing-doing I'm wasting time. But scheduling down time to recharge (even if it's a walk in the woods) will do wonders for your and your burning plans... ;)

  15. Fantastic! Fabulous! I hope you don't mind if I translate parts of this to quote in my Swedish blog about being a teacher?

Thank you for being so increadibly inspiring all the time!

    Merry Christmas

  16. I bake. I cook. Those are passions for me. Having battled weight & finding my way closer to FIT... Food is important.

If my energy isn't right - I don't cook or bake. What you put in, is what you get back. Time to recharge is important.

Teaching & finding the right teachers stokes the fire.

Thanks for sharing your fire, Lorraine. You are inspiring!

  17. Wow. I love the beauty you bring to my life Lorraine. I want to frame that poem and read it daily.

Before I got to the part of the post when you mentioned Jason, I was thinking of just that. We went to sushi last night, I talked with him for FoodPorn for an hour or so. He is lovely and sweet and wonderful and a little shy. Then he steps on stage and brings down the house...or really, brings together the house. He had us all up on our feet tickling each other...I mean, who can get a room of adults to do that! FIRE on stage!

The Monsters of Accordion show was full of fire, wish you all could have been there.

I am so happy to have each of your flames warming my life.

  18. Thanks for posting that amazing poem. I'd never read it before. And thanks to Allie Gator for the thoughts on reading and walking in the woods to recharge.

  19. HO! (as in the Native American recognition of a TRUTH, rather than ho-ho-ho, as in the seasonal greeting....)

Thanks, lorraine. i need reminding that I don't have to do it all myself. Pretty arrogant of me, actually! Teachers are good.

Good Advice, Allie, as always, my thanks. YOU are a huge part of my inspiration, you know.

Morrica, translate away, what ever you like!

I had a HUGE breakthru riding this morning. I felt like I was actually riding for the first time in my life.

It really IS just sitting there, and when I think how many hours I have put in to learn that....All abs, all abs, it's the CORE. (Something Poetry has been TRYING to teach me for months.

Well, I got it now. Ready for NEXT!

Actually, to be truthful, I am ready to go home, and if not be on FIRE, smolder for a bit.

  26. Hi everyone! Great blog Lorraine!

Been recouperating, so my fire has been embers of late, but fire...real Fire (well, not pyro fire, but soul's fire-you all know what I mean...)is the goal for 2011. Re-kindled, and all that.

    Midwinter greetings to all!

  27. I guess your theme song could be that poem, with a tune added to match the words ... yes, I still have my sights set on this theme song thing. I picked songs for Ben and Jack, you know, just some popular rock songs for their theme songs. And they refused to choose one for me. I was extremely hurt and have not forgiven them.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think her theme song should be ass tanka set to music.

    More ass tanka!

but for all you folks On Fire, i'm happy for you and grateful for the light and warmth.

  32. My Theme song. I can't wait. If I had had more coffee I might be tempted to suggest a few...

    GImp, Beez? I missed what?

Hi Martin!!! It's a great poem, but just to be clear, it's not MINE, you know. I'm not in CHestertons league, not sure ANYONE is.

    SNOW??? TOmorrow?????

Oh my no that is NOT in the PLAN!!!! I am flying out to Indy and my Derby Family for the weekend!!!!!!!!!

    This is NOT happening!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Exactly HOW am I meant to be a Fearless Leader if I have NO FIENDS????

Are you , like, all on Holiday already?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Quite the opposite, O Fearless Leader. Frantically trying to get through a project that needs to be finished before the holiday weekend. In fact, I shouldn't even be here, so pretend I'm not.

    ReplyDelete
  35. On holiday? Hardly. I'm at work, wrestling with something I THOUGHT I WAS DONE WITH. *grumble*

Leaving at noon today, though, as long as this project is under control.

Home until Christmas morning, then off to the land of no internet until Tuesday.

Do you think I can write half a novel in 5 days?

  36. I'm at work with coffee and chocolate. Also, I checked my grades for last semester. All A's, and I have a 3.857 GPA between all of the classes I have taken at UNO.

Well, my Ass is going to work now. Then I have a 2 hour Death Workout with my Trainer, which is good because I am so excited about leaving tomorrow morning the only way I will be able to sleep tonight is if I fall there unable to move.

  47. We got there all right. Worst bit was only having about ten minutes to get from Kings Cross to Paddington and on the train. And then having to stand all the way to Peterborough because they ditched all the seat reservations to make up for all the cancellations the day before. #notbitter

We are having shrimp scampi and fettucini for Christmas dinner. Haven't decided about dessert.

Something light on Eve as Spawn will be at his dad's side of things and I will have worked all day. I think it's going to be all fun munchies like baked brie and bruschetta and and..stuff.

Is your Fine Ass on it's way to Indy yet?

  61. I'm here but not online much. My dad and stepmom are here today for early xmas. Tomorrow we have our major present opening day so we can play wiht all the new toys before we get on a plane to Oz on xmas day. Hectic craziness trying to cram everything in before we leave!

Good news is that hubby has an extra laptop so i'll get to be online there even if he's at work :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. Braised lamb shanks tomorrow night.

Christmas dinner will be cafeteria turkey at mo-in-law's retirement community, but it makes her happy at 82, so who am I to complain? She will be making the rutabagas and creamed onions necessary to the event (in her head) because they aren't supplied.

And then lasagna with the whole in-law family the day after Christmas. I'm making dessert. Guess I should figure out what.

And finally, hubby and kids are doing something for me on Monday as a late birthday dinner.

    TOO MUCH FOOD.

    ReplyDelete
  63. creamed onions?

yes too much food. we are only 2 and have a small kitchen. i'm still planning my meal, but i am loving hearing what everyone else is enjoying.

    trip to oz, how exciting!

    ReplyDelete
  64. She killed me. Not sure where I got the idea "Hey, two hours training with Little Evil, what the heck, sounds like fun"

I really, really need food. But it's very far away. I know if I get up and try I will never make it to the kitchen.

    Help!!!!

On the upside, I feel great in my head. Very powerful.

On the other downside I left the steaks I bought for the Bengals this weekend on the counter, while I went and worked out.

    Steaks are now GONE.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'm not surprised the steaks are gone...clearly the Bengals decided this was an early homage to them.

Our local radio station is getting kids to ring in with jokes.
I just heard this cute one.

    heh!

Just in case Fiends are heading out early, safe travels and have a great weekend.

Giftmas Eve lunch: leftover chicken curry.

Giftmas Eve dinner: unknown food at my friend's house.

Giftmas lunch: cold kosher lunch (probably different salads, tuna salads and fish, and bread or bagels).

    Giftmas dinner: kosher Chinese food.

Hi, Butcherbaby, Holly Abbie, and Jamilah! You are now Fiends! Here are your very own white, buckled jackets. If you'll look around, you'll find whatever you need to personalize your jacket; it needn't remain white. :) Don't be afraid to leave more comments!

Ms. Fabulous, your ass is absolutely callipygian. :) Have an uneventful pair of flights, and have fun with the Indy derby gals!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I don't really know or care. Something fishy in case Cesare do care some.
I have some scallops in the freezer and zucchine that need eating, so most likely this will turnout as
roasted scallops on a bed of creamed zucchine.

  69. ACK!!!! It's , well, yucky out there. Nothing I can't handle or drive thru, but does NOT make for any fun. Hmmph.

And what is this about a possible New Years Eve BLIZZARD here????? Early predictions say HUGE storm. Here.

But today? Be careful, have fun!

Well, no, not quite. I'm in my robe and need to shower and have more coffee. But SOON!!!!
