Now More Than Ever...

I want to do a bit of a post tonight, and tell you everything about what a wonderful weekend it was, but it IS nearly midnight, I'm pretty darn tired, and there was too much to condense properly for my brain at the moment. Still, we shall try. (not sure who the WE is here, it's just me and these Bengals at the moment.)

Here's my favorite of the Derby pics from Saturday night, a Tom Klubens shot of Dora the Destroyer, which may well pretty much says everything that needs to be said.

(using Derby photographers photos for your own blog or art is entirely cool, as long as you, say, ask them. And give them credit. They're beyond cool like that, you know)

Speaking of not exactly great shots...

Or not exactly, but here is Mr Klubens wearing Joan of Dark's wig on the day after the night before. I, um, get credit for this one. And take full responsibility.

Me and Joan of Dark by another great Derby photographer Marc Lebryk. We'll try and get a proper Derby pic of his in here before the end of this, but I love this shot.

I loved being there for these Bouts this weekend, like coming home. It was a couple of my friends lasts Bouts, before retiring, Vonda's and Jane Ire's among others, which was a strange feeling, thinking, "how can you retire, I am only just starting" but at the same time, knowing, it's a circle, Derby is, there's so much love, and so much FAMILY, it doesn't end.

It doesn't end. And they'll be there with me, when I skate my first Bout. All of them.

I like that.

I love that.

I could go on, and I do believe on the way home from the airport tonight I went into fine detail to my very tired Boss about every last great move, and jam, and skater but it's after midnight and we have three hives of Russian Bees arriving in the morning just ahead of a Winter Storm (Yeah, I know, late April) and I am all done for the day.

Tomorrow: Bees. And practice, with new skates, (which I nipped into Roller Revolution and bought tonight LOVE this store, and the people who own it, huge thanks to you! Wish I'd gotten better contact info, Derby owned and operated, and yes, you love them too)

I'll leave you with a Marc Lebryk shot from Saturday, four blockers on a jammer.

Did she get thru? Yeah, I think she did, tho I don't recall the exact moment.

Know she did. There's always a way.

Because that's what Derby is about.

You do.

Love and Derby,
Lorraine

Great post (I really love that first picture).

Www, I so wasn't expecting a post tonight.
Really sounds like a wonderful time, I love hearing some of your Derby adventures.

And yes, rest now!

I do like that pic of you & Dark!
Glad you had such a great time. Sleep well now, I'm guessing 'wide awake' is the aim when it comes to tomorrow's bee-wrangling.

Okay, blogger is doing something really odd.

I just put a perfect link in my comment and it linked back to the blog.

Trying again...
Funny you should be getting those bees now, when I woke this morning I thought of you when I was listening to the news
and heard this

Skates and bees and snow and no sleep?

Just an ordinary day in the life of the Fabulous Lorraine.

Here it is rainy and I am tired and at work and as-yet uncaffeinated and completely swamped in things with deadlines.

At 08:19 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Bees!!!

Coffee.

Oh my.

Any day that starts with three boxes of Bees and ends with Derby practice is going to be a good one!

Or at least interesting.

At 08:24 Blogger Jane said...

New bees? And snow warning?

At 08:24 Blogger Jane said...

And tick

At 08:46 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Gotta go get covered in bees. Yup. Just another day in the office here...

At 09:41 Blogger Chantrelle said...

Yay Beeeeees!! I am so glad you have made me much more calm around bees because I can pass that calmness to Ben. I still think I'd squirm around a whole hive but when there's a particularly flowery bush full of bees, I know as long as ben treads carefully by, he's probably good and I've communicated that to him calmly without hiding the fact that I"m freaking out because I'm not...so thank you :)

Derby is so frickin' awesome. I knew it was but until watching our first match saturday, I really didn't understand. I already bought tickets to the next one in May!

Fab U Lous

I swear your excitement for the game makes me want to do it.

Have fun with the bees and remember to save me a tiny Russian hat!

At 09:58 Blogger D said...

Bees! Sweet! And that wig is fantastic!

Also, what kind of skates did you get?! I love hearing about peoples skates!

Nothing to see here...

At 10:38 Blogger AletaMay said...

Fablo, you have so found your tribe in the derby world! It is a beautiful thing to see.

I was so so excited to find out this weekend that my brother in Iowa is going to start keeping bees this year! I think he is getting his bees this week too. Can't wait to see them.

At 10:39 Blogger Jess said...

Woooo!

Tom Klubens *owns* that wig, I tell ya. The wig should thank him for the use of his head.

Quiche demands I ask why she stayed up half the night writing a lovely blog, yet no one's here. I see no less than eight avatars, not counting myself, so I assume she means that We Nine need to have a haiku battle. I'll start.

I dont know haiku
from my arse, my elbow, or
a hole in the ground.

She means to skate on the frames.
Surely won't end well.

At 11:48 Blogger spacedlaw said...

To be a poet,
You just need to know numbers.
Counting on fingers.

At 11:51 Blogger Jess said...

It's five syllables,
then seven more syllables.
Mention a season.

At 11:59 Blogger Cecily said...

Oh I know how to
I just don't like to do it
I think it's lame, summer. ;-)

In all seriousness, I think I was scarred by poor teachers/students whom would ridicule poetry that did not follow very specific rules. It took me many years to find validation to the fact that I was writing good poetry even if it didn't follow the rules of what ever type of poetry someone thought poetry had to be.

At 12:02 Blogger Cecily said...

And yes I know the last ling it 6 not 5...I had to throw a season in there and break the rules at the same time, because I'm a rebel...yeah you heard me...rebel.

At 12:14 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Actually the number of syllables is less important than the spirit of the poem. We (outside Japan) focus on the technicalities because we are incapable of grasping the evanescence.

At 12:56 Blogger Jess said...

I'd argue that we're not incapable. Just lazy. At least, I'm lazy. It's much easier to play with a syllabic structure than it is to unify that structure with an image and a feeling.

Of course we're just playing here, you know, Cecily. It's not like there's a prize. Just mess around! :)

Hmm. And well you should not.

At 15:24 Blogger Jess said...

OI. Get back here. This thread ain't dying on a Yoda-ku. *stab*

Sarah Jane has passed. I am sad.

At 15:37 Blogger Erin Underwood said...

Ouch! Jess!

Q is my skatin', rockin' bee covered hero. :-) I think I live vicariously through these blog posts!

By the way, I'm trying something that I heard on Q's blog... I think, I heard it here. If you eat honey from your local bees, it's supposed to help with your allergies. I've been eating local honey for a couple of months now (several times per week)....and my allergies aren't nearly as bad as usual. Maybe it's all in my head. I don't know. I just know it's workin' for me. Yay!

By the way, you guys have to check out Nathalie's awesome prose-poetry piece on my blog. I love it! I must share!

At 15:57 Blogger Cecily said...

Yes Erin! That is true. And I am glad it is working for you. Eating local honey will not get rid of your allergies but it will in fact help with it!

At 16:38 Blogger Marjorie said...

I think it's to do with decreasing your sensitivity to local pollens etc. Very cunning.

I have been out to dinner with friends - had a lovely evening, then home to see the sad news about Lis Sladen. Very sad. I hadn't even realised she was ill.

(Cecily, school had that effect on my poetry efforts too)

I issued a challenge on Facebook the other day - post a short video or audioclip of yourself speaking so we can all hear and see each other.

If you don't want to post it generally on Facebook, post it on Fablo's Fiends on facebook page...and if you're not on Facebook you could pop it on Youtube.
It has been fun!

Venus, Mim and Magic all went walkabout right before I left for practice. Venus and Mim came scampering back, Magic, not so much.

Poor guy must be really scared out there, it's raining and cold, and he has no claws.

Silly little F1. Venus and Mim are locked int he foster room and I propped the door in, but not sure what to do for him. I can't CATCH him..

Maybe a live trap tomorrow....

No clue here.

Good practice tho...

At 23:02 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Oh shit, I hope he comes home quickly and is alright.

At 23:56 Blogger Cecily said...

I hope you wake to find him either inside, or waiting in the yard for you.

At 00:08 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Oh noooo! Poor Magic! He can't even climb a tree to save himself!

At 08:08 Blogger Erin Underwood said...

Magic come home!

Marjorie, I know. I was really sad to hear about Elizabeth Sladen...though I can really only think of her as Sarah Jane. :-(

Cecily, after last year's allergy season, I was willing to try ANYTHING! Honey... well... it just seems too easy. :-) All of these trees are blooming and not a sneeze from me!

At 08:16 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

No Magic yet. No footprints in the snow even. This guy is GONE somewhere.

Really hope he finds his way home...

At 08:19 Blogger Phiala said...

Oh dear...

Is there someplace he could be hiding right around the house? Under/behind/inside something close, rather than having run off before the snow fell?

Of course, I'm sure you already looked in those places four or five times.

At 08:26 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Fingers, toes, and eyes crossed for Magic's safe return!

At 08:59 Blogger Erin Underwood said...

Has Magic gone outside before? Is he familiar with the area?

At 09:19 Blogger Jane said...

Hoping for safe return of Magic. Probably hunkered down somewhere and will pop up soon. Is that wishful thinking? I don't know.

Definitely a live trap, they work. Put a blanket around it like a cave and put it near bushes near house. Put his favorite smelly food in it and some of "his" things near it, something with his or your smell.

At 09:43 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

I don't know either. Going to write Bengal Girl aka Janet here and talk, but thinking live trap...

At 11:45 Blogger Becca said...

*calls upon Archangel Chamuel, the finding angel* Go find that kitty!!

At 12:37 Blogger hope said...

Dammit, Magic! They pick the best times to escape, don't they?

My Pirate Cat, Max, escaped yesterday, and as I was getting on my shoes to go capture him, he mrrrowed at the back door. I let him in, and he scampered by me with a huge fat raccoon tail. When I picked him up to make sure he hadn't hurt himself, he purred and purred and snuggled.

I suspect he ran to the side of the yard with the new beehive and freaked.

I send strong Magic-come-home vibes, please keep us posted!
