Adventures and You and I...

Something bad happened a long time ago,
and we've never really gotten over it,
You and I….

Some Adventures make good telling, on winter nights, by the fire,
We could Talk Stories, stories that started,
Do you remember the time?
They'd go on in glory, and in challenges met, demons vanquished
Hearts won, and hearts victorious, having come thru the darkness, to freedom.
We were young, and strong and had never thought of failure.
Safe, warm and together, we could laugh, and say again, do you remember the time that,
You and I…

There are Adventures that are told in the sun, the ones we made up,
as they went along, not knowing, at the time,
they were the stuff that legends are made of.
We were just having fun,
going where life led us, and didn't it all seem like a good idea,
at the time?
We dreamt, we believed...
A Castle, a Rose, or two, A Charm? A Forest?
Madame, I was ready,
We knew what was in there.
We've lived in interesting times.
You and I…

But there are tales that are not Adventures at all, but simply Tragedies,
Which are, one supposes,
Adventures that didn't quite work out.
The ones where you fought and burned brightly, carried a sword,
And never never never gave up, except...
You lost.
These are the ones you don't forget,
written onto your soul, they are,
For this lifetime, and the next….
And on until, you meet again, and can only look at each other and wonder,
If you can ever get it right, knowing no matter what,
You could, given, only: One. More. Chance.
It could happen, with,
You and I….

Never ask your future. Never forget what you know.
Never play with hearts or leave the one you love, because
If you forget for an instant, make one mistake, and,
You find yourself later, forever later, wondering, what it was,
You did wrong,
The village on fire, the children crying, handcuffed in irons, and sentenced to be hung?
You'll ask yourself who was to blame, and then know,
It doesn't matter now.
Oh, we knew the rules,
And we knew what was in there.
Only, it's just, we never never never thought…
We'd lose.
You and I...

But once we mattered,
You and I..

Love and Poems,
Lorraine

  1. Tragedies are adventures that didn't quite work out...fods that's good.

This makes me want to be in front of a bonfire with marshmallows, mullled wine and old friends.

  2. That's beautiful. And true.
    Especially the lines;

"The ones where you fought and burned brightly, carried a sword,
And never never never gave up, except...
    You lost."

    That really got me.
Thank you for sharing (and you're right. Much better here than FB!)

  5. Thank you! Glad you liked it. I like hearing which bits hit people the most, and hearing your thoughts. I like poems where you kind of fill in the blanks, -I- know what I wrote it about, but it might mean something different to some one else.

(Actually, quite SURE it will, hee hee!)

  6. Yes.

(I did say the odd ones tend to be the best ones: because they come from a place you never planned to go.)

  7. Yeah, Stalker-wife, it sure did THAT allright!

    I like the line:

    "But once we mattered,
    You and I.."

Because I'm guessing it will always matter.

  9. I have the house to myself this weekend.

Good; desperately needed a bit of quiet.

I already did the shopping, and will spend the rest of the weekend puttering in the garden and cooking and writing.

But first I will clean a bit, so that I have a welcoming space to do those things it.

It's supposed to start raining this afternoon and not stop for the rest of the weekend, so not as much gardening as I'd like, but much more scope for cooking. Just as long as I get the front lawn mown before it starts.

    Very beautiful. Just a correction:

    *hanged

  12. I've only read it twice, so no comments yet (except multiple readings are a comment in themselves) but why isn't this in the night garden, too?

    Hmmmmmm??

  13. This made me cry.

I'll admit it does not take much these days, but this hit that particular sweet spot dead on.

Broke my heart right from the first line:

Something bad happened a long time ago,
and we've never really gotten over it,
    You and I….

I've been spending a lot of time trying to work out what to do with the tragedies of late. You've captured how that feels for me here. This is a good thing.

  14. Awww, tears! The highest praise. Thank you!

Hanged vs hung is an ongoing debate, but hung is certainly correct for the time period the , er hunging, was about to take place ;)

  15. So you're saying it's well hung?

    *ducks*

  16. If Quiche wishes to contribute it to the Night Garden, it will go in the Night Garden. She has not contributed it as yet, however. I assume that's because while it says things both beautiful and true, it's really more a personal meditation than a poem about things which come to a garden at night, or what may be found there, or what might happen there. Which is the project's remit, as well we know.

I hope Quiche will make an Art for the project one day. It only bloody started with her. I remember her saying, aeons ago, that she wanted to write a song.

No, no heavy-handed hints here or anything. :P

  17. I have just watched Doctor Who.

    That is all.
    ;)

  18. I did, didn't I? Ought to do that. I wrote the poem so I didn't have to work on an article I have due WAY too soon, could stick a song in there, one suspects..

Ah yes, it IS a Dr Who day, isn't it?

I am off for my end of season Derby Meeting and Party. Can't imagine THAT will be dull as the night goes on...

  19. It is. You know, I think the bloke who wrote this ep could have a future as a writer.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah, what was his name again? Nel Gurgle?

Everyone knows that the best way to meet a deadline is to drop everything and write a song! Go for it, Q.

  21. I am about to watch The Doctor...

I don't think I need to say enjoy your night Quiche - you will anyway.

  22. That gave me chills.

I hope to heed this advice: "Never ask your future. Never forget what you know.
Never play with hearts or leave the one you love..."

    So beautiful.

Somehow it's 9am and i'm just crawling out of bed. Oh, I love the Wii babysitter on weekend mornings.

  23. So, it's not actually 9am here anymore, that post didn't post this morning!

Since then I've frozen my butt off at a beach wedding, gone grocery shopping, picked up 10lbs of fava beans, and started making Soba Noodle in Dashi for soup night tonight when I will see our dear Ticia :)

    Lovely day so far.

  24. Okay. I've watched the episode now - that man can write. And Fods how I love Matt Smith. ♥

  25. Home from my Party, and loved every darn minute of it, I can't wait for you all to get to know these girls!! They are SO us, I love them all so.

Being a part of them is so beyond anything I have ever done, or rather, on a par with the best things, music, you, writing, all of it.

I so need to see this entire episode of Dr Who, I've seen bits for some time but never the entire thing.

  26. I don't think this will spoil anything but it sums up my issue w/ Dr. Who....A bubble attached to the universe is stil part of the f'ing universe.

I enjoyed the episode, it was funny and was fun to watch but I"m not a convert.

OK, on that note, good night. :)

  27. Huh, I hadn't thought of that Robyn.
The episode will be one of my favorites Quiche, and not just because it was penned by the bloke you work for. There was so much in it for a lifelong Doctor Who to love.

I'm glad you had a wonderful time at the party.

  28. I absolutely love this, Quiche!

  29. There is a lot in your poem, Ms. Fabulous. I like the way it could be to someone else, or yourself. Like Siri said, that's just from the first reading. :)

  33. Oh, very well done! Got that bitter bite under the eye taht comes just short of tears a couple of time. Thanks for reminding me to come look at this now that I have the headspace for things besides the book again.

Okay, I JUST caught up to this -- and I LOVE it. A lot.

"Never ask your future. Never forget what you know." That line stuck with especially. Beautiful poem, Lorraine. Thank you kindly for sharing it. ~Ali

OK, that one made me cry and is putting me in a very reflective mood about regrets, the worst kind of regrets -- the kind that involve things you don't know how to change even if you had another chance. The kinds of things that made so much sense at the time or that seemed to have no other option, that they seem inevitable. I try to live life to have no regrets but some things just haunt you, especially when it seemed there was only one road, one option to take.
