On Booking Hotels...

Now that I have a bit of time, and am feeling better to boot, I thought I might do Part 2 of the Travel series. Airlines being Part 1. So, once you fly somewhere, you will need to stay somewhere, which brings me to: Hotels.

Obviously, what you want is a Five Star hotel, complete with Limo from the Airport. Once there, you will have very few problems, in fact, there will be an entire fleet of people whose only desire is for you to be Very, Very Happy. Those are easy to find, you go to your handy Zagut Guide, or Amex Platinum Concierge or if you are going this route, more than likely Someone will have already taken care of this for you, and all you have to do is look for the Guy with your name on a sign at the airport.

For most of us tho, lovely as it sounds, there is a little more work to it than that. I'm here to help.

First of all, don't call the hotel, ask for reservations and take what they offer you. That is SO five minutes ago, people. This applies however, for the most part, when you are looking around an area for the best deal, and are not set on one particular hotel. Even then there are things you can do.

If you want a specific hotel, look online for the website. Many will have "Internet Only" rates. I stay often at a Sofital in Minneapolis, when I need a hotel, and they have such a thing. Calling gets you $385 for the night. Online, it is much lower, going on down to this Internet Only deal. Last time I paid $79. Kid you not. They want to fill rooms. Now, when you book this, know your card is charged then and there, and if you have to cancel, that is so sad, no money back. Make sure your plans are firm, read the fine print.

One of my favorite sites is Hotels.com. Simply fill in what Star hotel you are looking for, what area you are looking for, and up comes a list saying "We will get you a room in this area for this much money at this Star quality hotel." You don't get to know WHICH hotel, but they haven't failed me yet. You agree, pay and then find out. May not be refundable, or the best room, but once you are THERE, you can upgrade for very little $$. Of course, best be sure you are going to be there.

Hotels want to fill rooms. I have gotten four Star in Manhattan for under $200 a night.

Check your airline site for Hotel and Fly packages. Check with the travel sites for the same. Search them all.

You can also Google "Hotels in the Boondocks (or whatever city) area. Then start looking at websites. Look for key phrases. In the list of features "In room temperature control" should not be on the top. In fact, it shuld not BE there, if the place is at all decent. That, along with say, Sheets, ought to be a given.

Read the customer reviews. If one person says, "Well, the loud music from the bar down below kept me up all night" well, that's sad. If 50 people say it, look elsewhere. Watch for trends, see what people are saying. If 25% of the reviews say the staff is un-interested in customer service, they most likely aren't.

Saving money is a good thing. Don't get me wrong. If you have to stop on the highway, well, you might have to, say stay in a roadside hotel. Sad but true. But even there, spending a little more, will make a LOT of difference. And trust me when I tell you it WILL make a difference. If it is a horrid place and you can't sleep, why are you there?

If you are going on a Holiday, re-think what you can spend, and spend a little more. You don't want to end up somewhere un-comfortable, there you are , having fun all day, looking forward to tomorrow, and there you are back in your hotel (with the in room temp control) finding out they also rent by the hour.

Live it UP a little. Share with a friend. Treat yourself well for a change. Comfort is so well worth it. I've done both. Better IS better.

Basically, do the research. If you are going to save money, don't spend $75 on a crap hotel. Spend $100 on a nice one.

Good Hotels want to fill rooms. The deals are out there. People get them.

And aren't you worth it?

Love and Travel,
Lorraine

Good advise and information.

Knowing how to get a deal is always a good thing!

Fiends should check out my friends' (Spacenat's friends too!) magazine here. Actually one half of the team that puts out this publication has delurked here a time or two.

There you have it Gayle, way to go!

Thanks Aleta, will check this out.

I thought it might be a good time to talk hotels, June coming and all...

At 23:26 Blogger ariandalen said...

Nope, Gayle; you are, indeed, first. :)

Not even April Fool's Day yet.

We've used Hotel.com several times with pretty good results. Be careful of additional charges that may be applied, like parking.

The cleanest, friendliest hotel we've stayed at in the last year was the Dinosaur Valley Best Western in Glen Rose, TX. Cleaner and in better repair than the four star Sheraton in downtown Dallas. Not only did they have a breakfast bar that was included in the price of the room, but they had freshly popped popcorn at either 2 or 3 PM and nachos at 4 PM. They also had coloring pages of dinosaurs for the kids, which when finished were put on the wall in the breakfast room in frames. They also had board games available for use in the same area.
And, yes, we did make sure they knew we enjoyed staying there. :)

Excellent advice indeed - I managed to get internet rates for the place I'm staying when I go to Townsville for my niece's wedding. Made a difference.

Thanks for the expert hotel advice. I had no idea. And 6000 entries? Thank Fod it wasn't me judging.

I had a funny story about my commute, but blogger ate it. I'm too tired to recreate the wheel... So I'll make it short.

I commute with a guy I work with. We've commuted together for years. Sometimes we get bored. This week we've been getting very competitive with the "spot the out of state license plates" punching (okay it's really a tap) game. Blackberries (the fruit) went flying. What can I say... Fun is what and where we make it.

Nighty-night fiends!

At 01:52 Blogger spacedlaw said...

I sleep badly in hotels (and foreign places in general) so my requirements are down to clean and fairly quiet. If there is no room to swing a cat, no problem (and the cat is happier for it) as I use it only for sleeping and I don't move THAT much.

Glad you are feeling better, to boot! Loved the winners. Some made me laugh out loud, too.

Yes, I am up too danged early, so I'm treating myself to some fiends.

Q, thanks for the offer of a better hotel, but for 1 night, I'm fine - my treat is the Water Street Inn for 3 nights - I would have stayed there 4, but there was no room. I'm cool, even if you think I'm a Lady. (hehehehe)

Oh. Happy April!

At 06:19 Blogger Jess said...

Excellent tips! (You mean in-room air control doesn't put me in control? Like a weather goddess? :D ) I usually always call the hotel to book, because I like to talk to a human. I shan't do that in the future. No more humans!

Speaking of which, Aleta - swarm robotics? For tending tomatoes?! We're doomed. They'll be pruning us next.

I keep looking and looking for the joke story on the BBC, but can't find it. Everything seems plausible. Am I that gullible? I must be.

At 06:27 Blogger Phiala said...

Jacuzzi rooms rock.

And Google is your friend in this: you can use google maps to find hotels near a certain destination, and it will even bring up reviews. I've found lots of very interesting local places that way. It's generally more fun to stay in a non-chain, as long as you can tell from the reviews and website that the hotel you're investigating did not feature in either Psycho or The Shining.

At 06:36 Blogger Marjorie said...

i can't find one on the BBC either, Jess - such a let down after last years flying penguins. The only one seems to be ont he kids page about a kind of 'American Idol' for kittens, and that's a bit pants, frankly...

You don't suppose this whole G20 thing is a rally elaborate multi-nationsl April Fool, do you?

At 06:52 Blogger Jess said...

I saw the kitten one, and the sad thing is I nearly believed it. That's how quick-witted I am this morning.

Manwife says they may have taken it down, as it's traditional to remove the joke stories after 12:00 pm. But I didn't see one up last night, either.

There is that thing about them not being able to turn Obama's limo round in front of Number 10, but frankly it wouldn't surprise me if they'd considered that actual news.

Which is supposed to ensure good luck for the month if said first thing on the first day of said month.

So far no fools here. DD and her friends are still sleeping (spring break...two weeks) and I have yet to discover what nefarious tricks have occurred. Perhaps they forgot.

Great hotel tips, Q. Looks like I am not going to make it to Minnesota in June...that's the same weekend as the Old Songs festival in NY state, which we have attended for years as our non working fest, and family sentiment is heavily against my absence. I need that 'two places at once' mod, darnnit.

At 09:47 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Good Morning!

Yes, Martyn, that IS the way to do it, the best one really. I didn't want to mention it as it is tricky and takes great skill to manage. Those who do tho, are most favored!

Jess, book with a human at the Water STreet. Small Boutique hotels are the exception. Unless you SEE a deal on the website, call them direct. Get friendly with them.

Oh, Book NOW at the Water Street. June is wedding month and it fills FAST, like NOW. When you book, mention you are coming to see Paul and I. If you would.

At 09:52 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Yup. 6000 entries. Haunted indeed we were! Must go check the Neverwear Blog, are they up yet?

I've been with Magic all morning, here on this snowy, YES, snowy day. I think he needs a picture blog tonight, he has been coming to the window when I come home, and mewing once I am in. I think he is lonely for me when I am gone.

Well, Siri, glad to hear it! I was worried about a hotel that promised to "Leave the lights on for you" and Motel 6 is just not so good.

Offer still there tho, you tell me how much you are paying, I'll get you better for the same price. Or try.

At 09:57 Blogger spacedlaw said...

The winners are up both at Kitty's and Neverwear's sites.

At 10:06 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

I was just there! Fods, they are funny. Almost I forget how hard it was choosing. Almost.

At 10:27 Blogger Jess said...

I love this one. Bonus points for subtlety!

Q, you read my mind-- I nearly asked that question (about small hotels and web prices), then didn't. Fortunately for me, I've been booked for like a week already. Woot! Big tub here I come. In fact, you guys may not see me. I think I'll stay in the tub the whole time. ;P

Siri, I'm beginning to feel guilty about taking you up on that ride into Stillwater from the airport on Friday. I'm not sure I want anyone staying in a Motel 6 on my account!

Holy crap-- big thumpage somewhere in the house just now. Either the cats are going mental, or the roof's imploding. I can't tell.

At 10:40 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Uh, Jess. Didn't you get the memo? Anyone booking a room with a hottub, must make that tub available to any other Fiend at any time upon request....

Sorry. Thought I sent that out.

Prius seems to be encrusted with snow and ice. Off to turn it on with heat up high to melt them come back and finish tea/

At 10:43 Blogger Phiala said...

I'm currently enthralled with this and its sibling.

At 10:55 Blogger Jess said...

Look: I'm getting in that tub Friday, and I'm not coming out till Monday. And while I like all y'all a whole bunch, I don't like you enough to let you get in with me.

Phiala, stop it! I'm exceptionally impressionable today! :D

At 11:01 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Tip Jess: Ask for the room over the Pub, then you can listen to Paul and I.....

At 12:17 Blogger ariandalen said...

Good afternoon, Ms. Fabulous and fellow Fiends!

Jess, I have a riddle for you.
If it takes a hen and a half a day and a half to lay an egg and a half, how long does it take a rooster to lay a brass doorknob?

At 12:19 Blogger Marjorie said...

I have booked at the Inn (Fri, Sat & Sun nights) I think I get a 'double whirlpool' (sounds ominous...)

Jess & Siri, which rooms didya get?

When I sent my reservation request I said I was booking on your recommendation, Quiche ;-)

ncidently, although it is a single room (well, only one bed) they did say a rollaway bed can be added if required - so if Emily (or any other single fiend) needs a bed and is willing to take a rollaway one let me know, we can work something out.

Dabbler, sorry to hear you might not be able to make it :-(

Its nearly 6.30. I should probably go home now.

At 13:00 Blogger EmilyLady said...

Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you.

I also have to get down to business about a Guardian Fiend; my mother is concerned about somewhat meeting me at the airport and so on. And then I will get you in touch with her ... I know some of you have volunteered (and thank you so much) but I am not sure how to go about this!

I haven't had a real April fools joke pulled over on me yet. Ben's preschool posted a sign saying "school closed today (no refunds)" but none of us fell for it ;)

I didn't even tell Ben about today, he's been so into tricking lately who knows what he would've thought of!!
But I'm sure he'll learn about it at school and my afternoon and evening will be interesting.

We've got our travel dates nailed down for June so I can book our flight to go visit the in-laws in Chicago first then come up to Minneapolis to see friends a couple of days before heading to Stillwater. Woo hoo!!

(I love that my voice software got "woo hoo" right but then again it told me I was putting away my virtues.... it's so confused)

If it takes a hen and a half a day and a half to lay an egg and a half, how long does it take a rooster to lay a brass doorknob?

I was going to say it depends on how many drinks the doorknob has had.

Isnt it weird how you can get excited about a movie on TV? I was just flipping around for something to type to and found UNDERWORLD is on in a bit. My first fav EVER.

Love this post!(just getting on with back reading)
Something to note though..
When I am booking a hotel online I check normally 4 to 5 different websites, INCLUDING the hotels personal website.. Here's why..
One lovely time I was making reservations for a romantic getaway and after checking all the deal finding websites, I decided(for a laugh) to see how much the hotel itself was charging for a room... and it turned out to be about $100 cheaper(even after taxes and an upgraded room) Which after booking through their site afforded me to add little luxury packages I thought I couldn't afford originally and still ended up paying less than the discount site wanted me to pay..
