Happy Day!

Happy Easter All!!!

I have always been a bit confused about Easter. I mean, is it a Christian Holiday? A Jewish one? An Egg one? Seems to involve a lot of chocolate, which is always good in my book. But it MOVES. Never the same day every year. Weird, eh? I didn't know that years ago when I double booked my Boss, thinking all he has is an Easter Event, and that is in May....At least it was the year before.

I did good on the Easter Basket front this year, judging from the smiles. I really like doing the Easter Basket for Small Girl Growing Larger. Used to be dead easy when the coolest thing ever was the Ultimate Barbie and some shoes for her. Now I have to ponder a bit. Sunscreen. Check. Postit notes. Check. New Twilight DVD. Way check. Lady Gaga cd. Oh yes.

The gig last night got a bit strange. First set went long and rocked and rolled and was all one could wish. Second set, not so many people, but they were into it. Then we took a break. And they ALL left. No one came in. No third set. Huh?

Here's the coolest thing. All Irish Pubs have TV, and they all play Sports. No one much WATCHES them, but they seem to have to have sports. Sigh. Boring. (Except Kips in Minneapolis, they had so many TV's they could always be counted on to put something good on for me on one of them)

The only time I put my foot down is wrestling. Nearly naked men rolling around on the floor together? Ick. Guys, in the privacy of your own homes, go for it, hey, whatever. But I can't play and watch it.

Last night the sport ended, and no one noticed. The strangest show EVER came on. Seemed to be a Hero, who had lost all his clothes except for his tight pants, who was captured by a villain, clearly evil, who was a 6 foot blond women in a leather catsuit and corset. And there were two really hot dark haired ladies, clearly good, who wore sort of Camelot type dresses, and camped out with an army, which included a Wizard Type.

I think the Evil Lady took over the mind of the Hero, and when one of the Dark Haired Ladies tried to come save him, he had to fight her, clearly struggling with his mind about this. I think there was some sort of Evil Burning Wand as well.

What the heck WAS this show? I have to know. This was some quality entertainment. Survivor was on after it, and I think it came on around 9 or 10. Cable channel 45, here anyway.

(Yes, I know, why am I watching TV while doing a show, but some of these ballads go ON...Can't help it.)

Today is as lovely as a Spring Day. Heck, might well BE a Spring Day, and I found some more frames with honey on them to extract, so I think that is my Plan.

Hope yours is as nice...

Love and Easter,
Lorraine

Happy Easter to you as well! Can't help you on the strange TV show, but I will look into it.
Good luck with the honey!

Happy Easter! No clue on the TV.

Am on my way out of the house, but will have to make more hot cross buns later... you're all invited over for buns. I'll make lots. :)

At 12:13 Blogger EmilyLady said...

Congratulations, Jane.

I don't like wrestling either, but I have seen in it a different light since watching "The Wrestler."

I like Easter. Very much. Singing at church this morning was marvelous fun; and how could Easter itself not be fun with a seven-year-old brother?!

At 12:20 Blogger Adri said...

Good morning, Fiends! Or, you know, afternoon... >_>

I really feel that this Easter morning calls for a mimosa, but I lack a key ingredient. Woe!

At 12:21 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Some show! It sounds like some cheesy action movie from the early seventies.
So weird that everyone left. Maybe because of Easter?

At 12:25 Blogger Phiala said...

This is magnificent.

MORE THAN YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE DATING OF EASTER:
Easter is a) a good pagan holiday, which was probably about the Vernal Equinox (which is a solar calendar thing).

b) The Jews took some pagan holiday about wheat and stirred it in with their Exodus holiday and said Passover would take place the 15th of Nisan,(the 15th of any given Hebrew month is the full moons). Jews have a LUNAR calendar, not a solar one, so they don't mesh. And every so often they

(and the Muslims, who also have a lunar calendar, which is why Ramadan moves around)(the Asians, too, which is why Chinese New Year moves)

have to stick in an extra month because they want the holidays in the right season.

c) The Feast of the Resurrection, the Christian one that got the old Pagan Anglo-Saxon name, recalls an event that happened just after a Passover in a place with a lunar calendar in an empire with a solar calendar.

d) In later years, the Christians got all upset about whether the Feast of the Resurrection could take place _before_ the Jews' Passover, even if they thought the Jews had missed the boat.

So you have the Eastern Orthodox saying it's the first Sunday after the 15th of Nisan, whenever those zany Jews say Nisan is.

And the West (Roman Catholics and European Protestants) saying that Easter takes place the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal Equinox.

But we in the West outnumber them in the East.

Or you can Google it.

Phiala - thanks for Susan Boyle. Amazing.

Happy happy! I'm just hangin' round my parents' house, waiting for the ham. Mmm, spiral-cut pig.

That show sounds like...something which should have been on much later than 9:00. I'm not even gonna ask about the Burning Wand.

happy chocolate and bunny day to fiends everywhere. even you lurking ones, you know who you are.

At 13:42 Blogger Falada said...

Happy Easter and good extracting! Easter IS a strange holiday. I think it started as a Jewish one (Pesach), which depends on the moon calendar somehow (which explains the shifting date). And since Jesus' crucification & resurrection is said to have happened just after Pesach, it became a Christian holiday. Which in turn got mixed up with lots of Heathen spring rituals about fertility - hence the eggs and bunnies...

These were my 50 cent about Easter. But I have NO idea what that TV show might be... :)

Cheers,
gammawaves aka Falada

that show sounds fantastic, is Susskins correct?
i want to check it out..please advise...
and Q, that sure is a strange the mass exodus.
please dont' take it personally.

Drew has gotten addicted to frisbee golf, so he is out doing that this SUnday morn. then he leaves for Coachella in the morning, a week in the desert.
Leonard Cohen! MIA! and so many more...Throbbng Gristle, even. I thought they were long broken up.

At 14:06 Anonymous Kate said...

Please tell me that it's The Legend of the Seeker! My twin 12 y/o daughters have been addicted to that show and have been asking me to watch with them. It's at an odd time here, so I'm usually up to my elbows in something. Will have to drop what I am doing, if...

We do the whole Pesach/Easter excitement here. I'm making a noodle kugel (leaven - so sorry) and HAM - perfect, don't you think??

The bunny arrived today bringing rubber wellingtons in assorted garish colors and much chocolate. Good bunny.

Back to the kitchen - I just paused long enough to say hi and grab my iPod. Must have cooking music.

At 14:33 Blogger Siri said...

Adri - it's OK. You can make mimosas without orange juice..... ;)

At 14:44 Blogger Siri said...

Susan Boyle is bloody marvelous. Us old fat broads can rock this world!

At 14:46 Blogger dabbler said...

Um. Q, my experience with that show is, if you have to hear the dialogue, you'll regret it. But visuals only, while singing all the verses of cold, windy rainy Night, or such, might indeed be diverting.

The first book of the series, by Terry Goodkind was okay. But by the fourth or so, it was simply slog to get through far too many plots/subplots/religions/ blah/blah blah. And too much playing with the idea of pain/pleasure for me.

Obviously all opinions are mine, and need not be shared at all....

much my take on the Robert Jordan sage, as well.

At 14:47 Blogger dabbler said...

And now that Blogger has decided to let me post... Many Happy Sunny Spring holiday of your choice to all. We have take MIL and SFIL out to brunch and will not need to eat for the rest of the week. MMMmm roast lamb with whole cloves of garlic. I loved it, but at least one other table in the room was not so happy!

At 14:55 Blogger Adri said...

Kitty-- my partner is going to Cochella as well, for the weekend (he leaves here on Thursday). Music fests are so not my thing (especially ones in deserts), but he loves them.

Goodkind and Jordan turned their epic fantasies into personal, TMI fantasies way too often for me to keep reading.

At 14:56 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Legend of the seeker,! Yup. That was it. And I did suspect that dialog was going to do it no favors. Perfect tho for diversion on a slow night. Beat basketball all to heck.

LOVE the cat suit corset women! Really, sometimes that's all I need in a show....

There are TONS of bees all over my frames, hurrah! WIll wait to go and ge them and extract, I am thinking.

At 15:00 Blogger Na said...

Siri, :snort:

Great summary, LauraJ. I think I've read all those bits of info at one time or another, though not so neatly put together so.

Pondering whether I'm a good or mean mama - the EB hid eggs, 'twere filled with mini-oreos, teddy grahams, and youghurt pretzels, plus one Caramilk (caramel-filled milk chocolate) egg per dragonet. And I'm reading 'em seasonal stories from various myths. That's it for this holiday for us.

Legend of the Seeker, new to me! Sounds good. I was thinking Q's description sounded like another one I've caught a few time, with futuristic warrior women in space, but can't remember its title, something like Cassandra 2000 or something... anyone got a clue? (Pretty sure I don't mean Andromeda)

At 15:24 Anonymous Lysandwr said...

Oestre blessings upon all Fiends everywhere!

and much thanks, Phiala. She is my new icon for "just do it." Not to mention the pleasure of hearing that sung properly.....sniffle....

off to rescue all the new planted and transplanted gardening bits from the 40+ mph gusting winds. Weeee! Who knows what we may find out there!

Q--you overclocked on your rockin' bus, and used up the audience in the first two sets. Perhaps sending out a round of redbull next time? Or audition a sturdier class of audience? Just sayin'

hugs to all.....trying to keep up here....

At 15:31 Blogger AletaMay said...

Phiala -- You made me cry. Thank you.

At 15:36 Blogger AletaMay said...

Sobbing got in the way of the ticky box

At 15:39 Blogger Lexocat said...

Phiala, wow! Thank you. It's not everyday one gets to watch someone change her life in under 10 minutes. (And the Susan Boyle who walked on stage was most assuredly not the Susan Boyle who walked off.)

Re Easter dating, there's actually one more ridiculously complicated bit involving Paschal Full Moon and Ecclesiastical Full Moon dates, because the Vernal Equinox definition doesn't technically work for the Southern hemisphere (otherwise Easter there would be in, er, September?)

As a practical matter, though, it's almost always the first Sunday following the first full moon after March 20.

At 15:43 Blogger Siri said...

Not only was Susan Boyle different, hopefully every pre-judging, only looking at the face of things, sanctamonious Simon Cowle in the audience is different.

('scuse the misspellings - not using a dictionary today - it's a holiday!)

I got beaten to it ... definitely sounds like an episode of The Seeker I saw a couple weeks ago. Plot description is at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1218974/synopsis.

All that being said, Happy Easter and many more lovely spring days!

At 17:38 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Hi Andrew, and thanks for your link. I think I will start Tivo'ing it, but might not watch it with sound, looks like it might be better that way..

At 17:42 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Oh, and thank you all for the What the heck is Easter info...Falada, welcome, My fav fairy story when I was a kid had a horse named Falada who could talk, and I named my bike that, as I was deprived and did not then have a horse...

At 17:47 Blogger Siri said...

And now you have horses galore, and not a one named Falada (which I first typed Falala, which isn't a bad name for someone with your musical talent).

At 18:02 Blogger Phiala said...

Wasn't Susan Boyle just magnificent??? When I got to the bit with the judge's faces, I made Nick come watch the beginning over again, and then of course the rest. Hooray for her!

My friends in NM used to call me Falala (privately) for a long time because they couldn't remember Phiala. Was years before they admitted this to me. :)

Having a friend over for light socialization and more hot cross buns.

At 19:13 Blogger Siri said...

I do!! I do!!!!

At 19:24 Anonymous LauraF said...

Yeah, that's definitely Legend of the Seeker. And while watching it without sound would maybe be the most intelligent thing to do, I think it can be appreciated that much more because it's got such bad dialogue. It's just so entertaining, in a painfully bad sort of way...

At 19:46 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Oh My God, Phiala I am so glad you posted that. What a voice...and singing that song.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who teared up.

At 20:07 Blogger Jess said...

Hallo. Just driving by for a box of ticks. Ham has occurred, and so has my mom's pepperoni bread-- which goes up to eleven, I'll have you know.

So this Britain's Got talent thing is definitely a clip I want to see, and not one of those cringetastic freak-pointing episodes? I can't bear those.

At 20:11 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Jess, it is a sensationally good clip

At 20:22 Blogger Siri said...

Jess - the ones to point at were the crowd and the judges.

She is my new idol!

At 20:40 Blogger Dan Guy said...

No one's mentioned it here yet, but because one hears it a lot around Easter, and because "American Gods" contains a wonderful gag concerning it, I will point out that the alleged connection between "Easter" and a pagan holiday honoring Eostre (or Ostara) has been pretty well debunked in the last fifty years.

The first recorded time a goddess Eostre is mentioned is in the early 8th century by the Venerable Bede, in his De Temporum Ratione. In it, he spends two lines speculating that there was once a goddess Eostre who was honored at the time corresponding to the Paschal month. Given that no record of Eostre has ever been found, modern scholars believe that this was wild conjecture.

The German version of the rumor is that Easter comes from a pagan holiday honor Ostara. This was first conjectured in 1835 in Jakob Grimm's Deustche Mythologie. Once again, there is no record of a goddess Ostara ever existing.

At 20:49 Blogger Phiala said...

Jess, and anyone else who was unsure (esp after the first minute) - keep watching! It is so very worth watching the whole thing, turly.

At 20:51 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Do you know what I loved about the clip - the way beauty shone out of her as soon as she started to sing...she glowed!

At 21:02 Blogger Phiala said...

My fave bit was the look on the judge's faces when this "dumpy old unemployed woman" started singing.

Closely followed by her happiness at the end when everyone loved it.

At 21:04 Blogger Adri said...

Susan Boyle made both me and my partner tear up. Such an incredible voice, and such an amazing turnaround from the crowd.

You know her whole life she was told she was too big, too ugly, and probably for the past 30 years, too old, to be a singer. I think she's lovely, and so saucy.

At 21:32 Blogger Siri said...

I'm sayin' - she struck a blow for us fat old ugly broads. Whoop!!!

Great song choice, too.

At 22:08 Blogger Ticia said...

Happy Easter all!

Phiala - I got goosebumps. And I agree with Sally. She glowed. Such an incredible voice. Just beautiful.

Okay, gotta go...

Oh, can anybody tell me how to un-link twitter from facebook? I'm failing...

At 22:19 Blogger vampi said...

ticia, where did you link them, from twitter or from one of your apps that you twitter with?

i'm assuming either way there is a facebook app working with twitter. on the lower left of facebook is the applications menu, click there. then click on edit. you can navigate in there to find twitter and remove permissions. i don't have them linked link that so i can't tell you exctly what app to look for.

i use ping.fm to post at both and i'm pretty happy with the service. i have one place to go to to control how i post across all of my social media.

At 22:23 Blogger Bridget said...

Sally, I noticed the same thing. When she sings, she is... radiant. Shining. So many times I've heard that song, I've never heard it better.

Phalia, thank you so much for that.

Susan Boyle...Wow!

Sometimes the producers and judges of shows like American Idol, Britain's Got Talent!, America's Got Talent!, etc. need to be reminded that a woman's voice isn't fully matured until she's in her fifth decade. I think Simon and Piers, and everyone else, just got reminded. :)

Now, to catch up on everything else. :)

Brilliant. Marvelous. Thanks, Phiala. Here's wishing Ms. Boyle bounding success with her dream of singing. Skål!

We've had a very mellow day here. Then an invite late in the day, to come over to a neighbor's house (same folks who had us over for New Year's Eve) for their first bonfire of the season. So we sat around the fire for a few hours visiting, watching the lingering sunlight, the dragonets occasionally asking, "What else can we burn?"

Happy day/evening, peeps.

I'm up at an ungodly hour (my normal ungodly hour, unfortunately) and I just wanted to wish everyone a glorious day.

So, to all I wish a day of wonder and enjoyment, even if it's only for a moment, because it's those moments that light our way on the path of life. The blazing bonfires are magical, but it's the little sparks that burn low and bright and are small enough to carry and not be burned that sustain us.

Of course, the mine hasn't had much tea yet...

Magic REALLY liked me this morning! Several licks!!!!!!! Then he bit me!!!!! This is so cool!!!!!!!!I didn't act like prey when he bit me, I just stayed still, so he stopped biting and hissed, before going back to breakfast!!!!!!!!!!

Such love...

I'm beat from the week of spring break mayhem but have to stay awake tonight because Ticia and I are going to Leonard Cohen! Hubby has to get work done so she has stepped in once again as my concert buddy :D

Must clean house now, it's a wreck.

My boss of 16+ years commented when I came back from lunch "Your desk was so clean I was afraid you weren't coming back after lunch." I replied "Two weeks before inventory? You'd be a writhing mass of twitching nerves on the floor if that happened." a pause, then her response "Well, somebody would be."

I burst into laughter and so did she. Aquarians and Scorpios, what a great work mix.

At 17:48 Blogger TommyB said...

OMG- Susan Boyle is FANTASTIC. As someone who's spouse actively discourages him from singing (trust me- she's right) I am always sort of in awe of anyone who can carry a tune- but wow- that woman has got "it"- whatever "it" is.

On the Easter thing- I've always been intrigued by the idea that what amounts to an appropriation of Passover traditionally involves ham. Them early Christians were certainly sarcastic!

Although the best way to get my brother-in-law to skip temple is a bacon sandwich, so maybe it was a recruiting tool.

At 17:49 Blogger TommyB said...

oh- and don't worry- I sing plenty when she's not around.

No booking of flights, looks like I'm driving to Minneapolis in June! Dropping kids with the guy when we get there, he has a cousin who lives there, so I'll mostly ditch them all for a couple days to come play with fiends. :D
