Here I Am....

Morning All! Here I am back, and very sorry to neglect such wonderful fiends all week, but sometimes one has to curl up and take care of onesself. Migraine , then bad Moon Time followed by a solid 24 hours of puke. What the heck? Stress? Body wacked out? It's still hard to eat, nothing feels right, anyone know anything?

I kept up on work, and Cabals and Kitties, but didn't have energy for anything else. Still don't have tons. And many thanks to Paul for finding a Dylan to play with this weekend, and for the Dylan! I owen you guys! Really kind of wish I had ben there to hear it.

This week the Birdchick is off birding in a country whose name I won't begin to try and spell, and the four Italian Hives need to be fed, checked for brood making and comb making, and all. We apparently need more entrance reducers too, so the Queen can't come out. And the Russians come! Not sure exactly WHEN but very soon.

And we may be building my screen porches! Which would be wonderful. I know some kitties who would be way into some outdoors.

And it sure is time for the garden to go in....

So, I'm back with you! Tell me every little thing...

Love and better,
Lorraine

Good morning! So glad to hear (see, actually :)) that you are feeling better. Things are much better here as well (though the only one puking, in all honestly, was the furry butt. And that was from too much grass....yes, grass DOES grow here. Sporadically)

Anyway. Russian hives. I am fascinated by this. Does it mean that the lineage of the bees is Russian, but they were born in the US (Citizens!!) or are they shipping all the way from Russia??!

Having dealt with my second set of chick boxes (they sleep all night until the trucks come, then cheep like crazy as if to say "take us NOW!!!) I am becoming less surprised at anything sent through the mail these days....

But from RUSSIA??? hermm..ps.....Happy Mother's Day to all you MOTHERS!!

Every little important thing? Well, let's begin with the important stuff: glad to have you back!

At 11:46 Blogger Marjorie said...

Welcome back sweetie. So sorry you've been having such a rough time, but glad you are starting to feel more human again.

I was wondering about the bees, too - are they actually insects with originated from different countries, or just named becasue someone thought they looked at bit russian?

At 11:48 Blogger Marjorie said...

Hello Morrica! I like your icon.

At 11:51 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Thanks All, Morrica I like yr icon too.

The bees originated in Russia, and were considered very hearty, so they are now bred in the US. They are coming from Tennessee , not Russia.

Every little thing? Well, I saw a show called "Predator and Prey" yesterday, and one segment was about bees vs wasps. It showed a European honeybee hive being decimated by wasps (made me sad), compared to a Japanese honeybee hive that beeballed the scout wasp. And I thought, Japanese bees? How might they get along with the Russians and Italians? :) It also explained how a beeball works; kills the invader by cooking it. Bees rock.

Hey, Q! It is good to see you about. That sounds like a bit of a stomach bug to me. Poor you. :( Keep the food bland and easily digestible, and make sure you drink water. Don't get dehydrated-- the pukiness can do that to you. Replenish those electrolytes! Rest.

Every little thing: not much on my end. Just celebrating the spring writing workshop being done. Yay, now I get to write! (Or at least obsess about seemingly being unable to do it as handily as I teach it.)

Ewww, Na, that's, like, death by friction heat! Scary.

Glad to see you are back. Happ-Bee Day from Mother Russia, right?

It turns out that all this time we have been speaking about bees I have forgotten that my parents keep bees, and distribute hive-boxes and have done so for over 10 years. Ha ha. It is on such a small scale that I had forgotten it. They have bee boxes for Mason Bees. They are very early season pollinators and very gentle. I had totally forgotten about them. My parents drill holes about 6 inches into wood blocks and the bees spend the early spring filling them with young and pollen. The deep part of the holes are filled with female young and then the male young fills in the rest of the holes. My parent give a few away to friends to help pollinate their yards. No honey... no messes... just a bunch of boxes of wood with holes filled with bees and pollen. Apparently some people open them up in the winter, pick out the mites, and put them back into the fridge to wait for spring. That isn't exactly what I would expect to find in someone's fridge. Neat huh?

I will read the post. Later. When I get to a computer screen that does not conceal a full half of it. I am in the reference section at the library and their computer can be a little strange sometimes ... perhaps I should move on up to the Young Readers computers. I only have so many years before I'm not allowed to use them anymore. Sob.

Ahck, does Moon Time just do that to you? This doesn't seem to be the first time it's happened to you. What a nightmare.

In the Young Readers section now. I like this computer, except it does not let teens spend time on Facebook - there are those who have to be pried off. MySpace is also unallowed, but I don't use MySpace ...

Not much going on here of late, other than getting into RBS (it's buried in there among the 300 comments ;-) ). But in two days, my nearest and dearest friend comes to stay with me overnight, while her husband is interviewing in the area. It sounds like it might not be the right job for him, but dang! it would be great if they moved to Chicago. I have to hope for what's best for them though.

Hope you feel all-the-way better very soon!

2) Washer repair guy came and spent 15 min. here fixing washer - small bill, all better. Yeah!

3) With all the attention paid the washer, the dryer decided to disconnect from the wall vent to show me. BFF's husband (my handiman) came over and did the crawling on the floor and guiding the vent to the vent while I pushed. I'm back in the laundry business now.

Lorraine said: Migraine , then bad Moon Time followed by a solid 24 hours of puke. What the heck? Stress? Body wacked out? It's still hard to eat, nothing feels right, anyone know anything? My friend Julie lurks here and sent me this, since I suffer from migraines as well. I do not have a "trigger", they simply come with my cycle. I have tried Midrin, Imitrex (shots as well as tablets), Zomig, Maxalt, and Frova. Oftentimes, each medication becomes less effective over time/with use. I have had to go to the ER also, and they have found that a combination of Dilaudid (pain killer, cousin of Demerol!)used in conjunction with Toradol (an adjuvant) plus Zofran (for the nausea) plus fluids (IV) works. Sometimes.

If I have not "caught" the migraine early enough, then, the worse I feel. You know exactly what I mean, Lorraine, (and anyone else who suffers these terrible headaches). NOTHING feels "right" at all, and you cannot imagine ever feeling better/well again (even enough to eat!) Cannot keep down food or even water. Terrible feeling, that.

So, I have now found a medication that (so far, fingers crossed) works wonders. It is called Amerge. It is quite expensive ($38 a pill!) but it is quite effective. First, you can take it at the onset of a migraine, or in the midst of one (ever just woken up with one???) Second, it does not make you drowsy, so you don't lose as much of your day sleeping/fighting the loopy-medicated feeling. And third, it works as a "blocker" as well, to ensure no rebound headaches occur within 48 hours of taking it!

I have also learned that (as all of us migraine sufferers know) that a dark and quiet room, lying still, a cold compress or hot water bottle, and rest, work fairly well. Also, a physician's assistant recently reminded me, VERY importantly, to stay hydrated at ALL times, since being dry can cause headaches as well. I drink quite a bit of water every day, but I believe that juices/liquids in general is what he meant.

I wish you the best of luck in figuring out what works best for you, and pray you feel less pain and more well in these upcoming days!

P.S. Sorry for the lengthiness of the comment!

Will I be ostricized if I don't go to Star Trek? I mean, I was there at the beginning, and it just feels wrong to see another person in the role... of any of them.

It is hard to "replace" the characters. i loved them so. i think i can deal as long as they don't try to be word for word remakes and go on their own way. i do want to see more from the characters, so hopefully they stay true to the characters. tough job to make the characters their own and still stay true to what all of the old timer trek fans love so much. i'm a doctor, not an escalator

At 20:35 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Also, (and I will try to keep this one short!) I have Googled information on migraines, and have found a number of good forums where sufferers share their experiences with what meds worked/or didn't work for them, as well as other ideas on how to alleviate the "onset" symptoms that some have. One poster stated that simply exercising (who knew?!) helps, since it creates endorphins, a "natural" painkiller!

I have also read that some migraine sufferers (only the women, in this case) can experience worsening migraines as they age due to hormonal/estrogen fluctuations. Some forum chats have discussed low-dose birth control, while others suggest a full hysterectomy (FAR too extreme, if you ask me, since there is no going back from that!)

Again, take good care of yourself, and visit with a practitioner to find what works for you!

(Darn. Still too long!)
Apologies!

I have found that caffeine helps a lot with Mygraines. I make sure to have at least a cup of tea every day to stave off withdrawal, and take it in tablet form if the Imitrex doesn't do the trick by itself. (Ask your doctor if Caffeine is right for you. Caffeine may have side effects, including...) I found that when I'm really headachy I can go to sleep no matter how many milligrams of it are in my system. It's like the headache makes me a bottomless caffeine sink... It will wake me up or keep me awake all of a sudden when the headache goes away. Weird. And the throwy-up thing - yuck - I have Compazine for that, which I take if the headache gets to that dire "can't move" stage - it works but it will knock you out.

Ah, what fun.

Speaking of fun, I deadheaded, pruned, weeded, weeded, and more weeding, as well as transplanting volunteers to more favorable locales. It WAS fun, especially since it was cooler this weekend (was in the 90's a couple of days ago.) I'm hoping my order from Goodwin Creek Gardens comes this week. New lavender plants!

Got good news on the family front, too. Eldest brother finally got a new job. Seems times are hard for truckers, too. I want to see the new Trek. It got an interesting review in the Fort Worth paper.

I read that the author of P&P&Z is following up his success with "Abraham Lincoln - Vampire Slayer." Hoo!

And this week reminds me of one of my favorite movies: "The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!" Great film.

Good night!

hi Sue! fun to read you here again.

thanks anonymous one for sharing much info. i've experienced migraines, and it's great to read advice on how to avoid/tame/minimize 'em. thank fod i experience them infrequently, tho' the infrequency means i never think to learn more about 'em.

the ST links are hilarious. i have enormous fondness for the original Trek. not unfair to describe some episodes as Bad, though. ;) and i am truly not trying to talk Siri or anyone into seeing the new ST movie (fiends are entertained by zombies, but we are not them, yes?), but i gleefully declare, one reason it thrilled me was how very well it connects to and plays on the original show and characters.

hope the weekend is winding or has wound up nicely for everyone.

I'm a chronic migraineur (once or twice a month down from twice a week) and I can tell you from experience it'll take at least 24 hours to feel normal again. I'm a big fan of post-migraine cheerios to get the body functioning again, accompanied by lots of water.
If you ever have a more-than-24-hour migraine go to the emergency room. Even though there seems to be a law that ER carpeting must be in the most nauseating pattern available, the doctors can give you the "good drugs" and hook you up with an IV to fix dehydration.

Feel better!

Yeah. Cheerios are tasty and fortified with Win. :)

By the way, Dan, Mr. Jess would like to know if you'd be interested in building a TARDIS-like contraption which is essentially a pub. That way, instead of asking his brother, "Would you like to go down the pub?" he could say, "Would you like the pub to come round?" and then get there before he said yes. Because the answer's self-evident. Asking's really just for comedy purposes.

Doable? For glory if not money? Because we can't really afford to pay you.

At 09:03 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Jess - What a great idea. I bet it would be pretty easy to take up a collection for that. A timeshare time and space traveling pub would get a lot of subscribers.

At 09:15 Blogger Phiala said...

Didn't Spider Robinson already put one together?

Thanks, Nathalie. I should know by now that the Universe is totally set against the idea of me having a whole day to Get Things Done. It was certainly lovely to see my friends, and I'm glad there were no hard commitments that would have prevented that, but the visit was not as relaxing as it would have been if the little voice in my brain weren't busy with "You are supposed to be doing this... and this... and this."

And now I'm at work, and though I'm sneaking in commenting, I can't work on any of the stuff with deadlines because they aren't for this job. It's all very complicated. Of course.

It will all get done, though, and all will be well.

Kitty Cat--"behind on everything...ahead on cat petting" is exactly the right ratio for happiness, in my pet-centric opinion.

Erika--"chronic migraineur" sounds much sexier than "writhing in agony and puking every several hours once a month." It makes me want to get a red velvet chaise lounge.

Which may happen soon! As my house sale must happen by next Wednesday! Went for a long walk in my hopefully-soon-to-be new neighborhood and discovered to my squealing delight that a neighbor 3 blocks away has many many beeeee boxes! I must cultivate them and seduce them with baked goods and Adorable Dog Tricks.

So sorry about the under-the-weatherness, Lorraine! Glad you are feeling a little better!

After some scheduling difficulties last week, today is finally the day to make the world a better place, one new knitter at a time.

Hope - maybe if you casually mentioned that the baked goods would taste oh so much better with honey.

At 11:48 Blogger Phiala said...

Score! The lunch meeting people ordered twice as much pizza as needed, so I made off with a couple slices.

OSS, the world can always use more knitters! I'm not a great one to teach the basics, because I have to think really hard to knit Western instead of Eastern, but I teach lots of other fiber arts to make for it. :)

At 11:52 Blogger vampi said...

phalia, i'd love to know the difference between western and eastern knitting. i struggle so muh with kniting, i wonder if the other way would suit me better.

At 12:10 Blogger Phiala said...

Vampi, there are two dichotomies in knitting:

A. You can hold the yarn in your left hand or right hand. This makes no difference to the final result, and you can follow patterns as written. You sometimes see this described as English or Continental.

B. You can have the stitches on the needle sloped like this \ (yarn in that stitch comes from back to front), or like / (yarn comes from front to back). The first of those is the normal way to do it, as shown in (nearly) all knitting books, regardless of you hold the yarn. I do it the other way. There are pros and cons, but you cannot follow patterns as written because increases and decreases are backwards.

Trying the opposite way of holding your yarn might help, but I wouldn't recommend fiddling with stitch orientation until you are competent with the basics of the regular way. For one thing, you can ask any knitter for help if you get stuck.

At 12:21 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Vampi and Phiala - Switching which hand you hold your yarn in can indeed help (dichotomy A). I was ready to give up on knitting till a friend suggested I try the left-hand carry (Continental). For some reason that felt so much more natural to me. Handedness does not seem to have much to do with this preference among knitters.

Re: dichotomy B, I've sometimes done a combination for straight stockinette to make the yarn go a little further, also a suggestion from the above-mentioned friend.

One more reason to look forward to meeting you, Phiala! I'd love to learn about pure-Eastern.

At 12:27 Blogger spacedlaw said...

I've found your thief of time, Phiala.
The silly thing was trying to do away with the rosemary too (on account of the thyme in our garden not feeling really up to the competition standards set by sage and mint)...

At 12:52 Blogger Phiala said...

I'm fairly ambidextrous, and carry the yarn in my left hand most of the time. I can do it either way, and can do that weird thing where you have one color in each hand, though not well. :)

OSS, I intentionally left out Annie Modesitt's combined knitting - complicated enough already!

And finally, oh, THAT'S where it went. I should have known there was a poppet involved. My three have been hiding in a corner plotting.

for some reason, people think you make money selling animals. they look at the several hundred or event $1000 price tag and think that's a way to make some simple money. well, you don't make a whole lot breeding animals when you factor in the food, vet bills, shots, medicines, time off as animals always pick an inconveinet time to have their brood.

ugh i am so angry to hear about the mistreatment. Much happy loving thoughts to you Janet, i hope the kitties are able to find love. Bless you for making a difference and trying to help.

At 16:00 Blogger Marjorie said...

I suppose it comes down to whether they see tham as animals, or as a way of making money. *sigh* I'd rather believe it was just ignorance, but I doubt it.

Thanks Louisa for the Captain Hot-kilt link. Hee.

Reckless animal breeders, surely going to a Special Hell. Meanwhile, perhaps a special jail cell? Grrr.

Well. I got an eviction notice today. I thought the landlord was going to work with me but I guess he changed his mind. I am kind of freaking out. Sorry to bring the room down. I have a place to move to so that's good. I don't have anyway to move my stuff. And I am feeling like I will never get another apartment with this following me. Ugh. Things feel a bit dark.

At 18:27 Blogger EmilyLady said...

Oh, Gayle, I'm so sorry to hear this. Fiend Power is with you.

At 18:30 Blogger Na said...

Gayle!!! You're not bringing the room down, you're just letting us know to send you loads of {{{{hugs}}}}. And I'm certain you will be able to get apartments in future. Wish I were there to help you move, I would do so in a flash, you know.

At 18:51 Blogger gaypet said...

Thank you dears! I am going to go outside and play with M. Best distraction! :)

I am going to try to stop worrying so much about the future. Right now. M wants to play with Moon Sand. That's what's important.

At 19:11 Blogger Ticia said...

Gayle- ((hugs)) I wish I was there to help you move.((hugs))

At 20:10 Blogger Phiala said...

Oh Gayle, that sucks!!! I'm glad you have somewhere to move to right away, and I'm sure that help will turn up for the actual moving of stuff. As for getting an apt later, *so many* people are having problems right now that I think that allowances will be made in the future.

But coming out okay in the end does NOT make it less stressful right now, so feel free to come here and get support or unload. Honest.

At 20:33 Blogger Fluffy said...

Gayle, Phiala said exactly what my thoughts were (probably better...) Hope it all works out for you ASAP. And it will get better, I'm sure of it.

In fact, I may make a sacrifice to the martini gods in your honor. Since I didn't on Mother's Day. I'm forgetful.

I weeded more today. Yay me for finally getting back into the gardening groove.

Hugs to all who want one.

At 20:35 Blogger Ticia said...

Phiala said it perfectly Gayle. That's how I feel as well.

At 20:36 Blogger Beez said...

Quichie- glad you feel better. That's a real one-two (and a three) punch.

Gayle- ack! Message sent via Facebook.

*hugs both*

I gave notice at Werk II. I had just hit that service industry WALL (people come in, you don't even know them but you hate them on sight and you just want them to go away) and I need a break. That is a bad bad frame of mind to be in, so it was time to go.

At 20:47 Blogger gaypet said...

Fiends, um, you ROCK! :)

Thanks for the encouragement. I think that one of the things I am struggling with is that I feel like I now have a big "FAIL" stamped on my head. Ya know? I know it's not true and the fact that I lost my job does not speak to my character, BUT...

So, thanks! It means a lot. Off to read stories to M. Sendak tonight, I think.

At 20:51 Blogger Ticia said...

Beez ((hugs)) I know you made the choice, but change is always stressful. I'm proud of you for recognizing when you'd had enough.

At 20:53 Blogger dabbler said...

Gayle,
Have fun in the Night Kitchen, and consider that your landlord is making a poor choice. Surely he would be better off with a tenant willing to work out catching up, than looking for someone else to rent to. His loss. And there will be other apartments in your future, fer sure! better ones....

At 20:55 Blogger dabbler said...

And Beez, been there, congrats on your liberation. Hating people as soon as they walk in is a real drain on your soul... deep breaths of freedom.

At 21:06 Blogger Jane said...

Been reading to catch up - Gayle, have faith that your life will work out and that bad things do happen sometimes that are not because of anything you have done.

At 21:23 Blogger AletaMay said...

Gayle -- what dabbler and everyone else said. Message via FB. Maybe we can get coffee some day this week.

I just got home from godchild's Middle School Band Concert. Wild. It was fun actually.

At 22:05 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Huge hugs for Gayle and Beez.

Just got home from my fructose malabsorption test...ye hah. I cannot have fructose anymore. NO honey for me ever again *sob*
No wheat (no loss) no onion, or asparagus, or...oh the list goes on.

Watch the weight fall off me as I take fructose out of my diet.

At 22:12 Blogger Fluffy said...

Wow. I didn't know fructose intolerance could be a problem. Hope the weight DOES fall off you. That'll show that "natural, simple sugar" who is boss!

At 22:14 Blogger vampi said...

what?! i leave work with a headache and craps, and all hell breaks loose.

Gayle, my thoughts are with you, as is anything else i can help you with. don't think of this as a fail, think of it as an opportunity. it's a new path, but hopefully one that opens previously unopened doors

Dsal, what is this odd dietary restriction?

At 22:17 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Vampi, here is an article...

At 22:21 Blogger Na said...

Thirding or fourthing or somethin', what Phiala said.

Beez! {{{hugs}}} and more power to you! Smart move. Hard to do, but so smart.

And Sally! more {{{hugs}}} best wishes with the adjustment. :(

Here's to tomorrow; may it dawn brighter and bearing solutions for everyone having to Deal with Stuff.

At 22:21 Blogger ivenotime said...

Gayle, hugs!!! never feel like you shouldn't let us in on what is a difficult time- what are fiends for? day by day, thankfully you have a place to go. beez, hugs and congrats on liberation! and wow, bengals in flint? sigh, what a horrible thing to do, those poor cats.

At 22:25 Anonymous Kate said...

Oh, my everyone - good thoughts for soft landings, good friends, feeling better, satisfying employment, bengal love, good health, and fiendom.

Thanks, louisa, for the delightful link to Capt Mal in Leather - very shiny

Kitty Cat - I too am a fan of the old Star Trek (40 years almost) and LOVED the new film. Saw it Saturday as an early Mother's Day matinee.

Must read (and annotate) Pride & Prejudice & Zombies. Quick, where did I leave my sword!??

At 22:40 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Goodness! Must be the moon, so much going on...

Gayle, sent you a note..Beez, good on you!

Keep this thread going, but do it on the new post, all about PEE. (Seems appropriate, lol)

At 22:42 Blogger vampi said...

dsal, wow. from what i understood, it means you can't eat anything fun anymore. i'm so sorry. well i hope this new diet treats you well and makes you feel better.

At 22:56 Blogger AletaMay said...

I didn't comment on the Bengal thing in Michigan yet. Very sad. I hope the surviving cats find good homes. People. Damn.

At 23:05 Blogger Dragonsally said...

thanks Vampi - I think it will, once I get over not eating my (formerly now) favorite foods!

I'm printing out pages and pages of info, so I will be well informed shortly.

At 09:31 Blogger DataGoddess said...

Gayle - am running behind as usual, but wanted to add my {{hugs}} too. You do not have a FAIL stamp, shit is happening that you didn't cause, and your landlord is a fool.
