I Did What And Went Where???? A Day Off????

This post has absolutely nothing to do with Bengals, (HA! Take that fur butts!) but my neighbor took some pics the other night and just sent them to me, and as I am too lazy to take pics of whatever it is I am talking about, I thought these would serve.

I had a kind of day off today! Believe it or not. Handled all the morning e-mail and was done by noon, and having arranged Dog Care for the rest day, I went adventuring. Truly adventuring. I didn't even drive. Neighbor Mariska did. We went looking for garage sales in truly Bizarre small towns.

This is much more fun than it sounds.

Majorally scored. Strange china saucers for the Kitties to eat from, a plate with a MOUSE on it, not a picture of a mouse mind you, LOTS of old books, spider web place mats, a small Tombstone with 6 black cats (No clue, but I needed it.) A Small ottoman, perfect for Fur Butts.

And best of all, a floor length black leather NEVER WORN trench coat, and black leather, also never worn, pants, size 14 (which I am not. YET. Matter of time.) Still had their tags. $25 each. Kid you not. The little old lady who was selling then told me she had bought them last year, but her husband would not take her anywhere she could wear them. Since we were about 50 miles away from a town with stoplights, I kind of wondered what her plans had been.....

Kind of wished she had gotten to go wherever she had imagined wearing them.

Yes, I know. This picture is sideways. Nothing I do, despite saving my changes, changes that. But this picture of Magic is significant in that my Neighbor took it. I opened the door and called to him, and he came and looked at us and didn't run and hide, seemed interested even! So even tho it is sideways, I am still posting it as it was his first contact with someone other than me.

I really love that guy.

Love and Small Town Sales...
Lorraine

If my computer were working, I could enjoy your pictures. However, imagination shall serve me well.

Garage sales are definitely fun. Book sales are more fun. But garage sales rock.

Also, if Fiends are interested, I am now on Facebook. As EmilyLady.

Magic is just.SO.beautiful.

It seems like once his walls started coming down he just got more and more social- such enormous changes in a relatively short time.

Truly you were meant to be together.

Hi Emily- happy Friday.

Sounds like a great day Q.

Emily - I sent you a Facebook friend request. I hope it works.

Yay. Just... yay.

I'm out in the courtyard playing fetch with my cat. I toss the paper ball, he tosses it around, bats at it, and when ready, carries it back to me so I can toss it again.

Morgan is SO cute. :)

Garage sales are so fun. Small towns are too. Although in my experience I'd say more fun to visit than to live in. Some days anyway!

The leather lady sounds like a Garrison Keillor story waiting to be told. Can't wait to see you wearing them!

We are doing another writing weekend. I just started a new story that I am kind of excited about. Nice change of pace from the academic writing I have been trying to do this week! I am taking a break now.

Magic is so beautiful and that photo is all the more beautiful knowing it was taken by someone new to him. So Wonderful!

Emily -- I see you found Susan R. on Facebook. Perhaps you and she can have a cup of tea at some point during the June weekend??

Yay for good yard sales in tiny towns....Magic looking at someone else, and EmilyLady on Facebook.

Been a long week...tomorrow is set building for DD's Senior play (with 20 kids in the class, they need parental help as well) and then she goes off to the prom. The mother of one of her classmates has organized a whole picture taking thing at her house before the prom. I am so not in that world...but I'll be glad to have a picture.

And DS, off at college has had a busy week as well. Discovered that when you don't pay your electric bill, and it is in the name of the person who lived in the apartment three years ago, she cancels the account when the company calls to dun her.

Kid definitely has my Irish blood...and blarney. He managed to talk them into taking a payment, plus penalty and turning it back on before he even got his name put on the account. Now he just has to pass all three of his Physics classes, so he can graduate in one more semester, rather than two. Not my side of the family for the three Physics classes, for sure, that comes from his Dad.

I love the sideways picture!! Amazing.

Didn't know it was your day off when I sent you email so ignore that until you're working again ;-)

I love garage sales, i don't seek them out anymore but i stop when i see them. I really am trying to get rid of crap though instead of buy more!!

I volunteered at ben's school today and made alphabet soup with the kids. It went really well. I took ingredients that started w/ the first letters of their names and they had to come pick them up as i read the "Alphabet Soup" book. They all got them right! (all under 5 yrs). Then they helped me chop their ingredients and they all had soup at the end of the day. It worked so well! All the items (minus pasta, stock and canned beans) were from the farmer's market. :)

Ben's done w/ his quiet time...gotta go be a mom again!

Yard sales are awesome, and it definitely sounds like you found some great ones! I am planning one myself, I hope someone enjoys my old treasures. :-)

I have to second the plate with a mouse on it photo, I wanna see it!

And I admire you so much for the cat stuff. Often I have wanted to do something like that, but I know I don't have the right skills for it. I will probably channel that energy into adopting a teenager when my kids are a little older. Being a mom I am good at.

Aleta, Susan and I are planning on getting together! No point in my going all the way out to MN and not meeting her, is there? She was the one who sent the request! I had sort of had an account but never ever used it, and I guess she found me.

Hi Fiends, dropping in to say gidday from my brother's computer.

The wedding was brilliant - and am having fun catching up with family, including my latest great nephew Ryan, who is a year and a bit old.

Expect to see lots of photos on Facebook some time on Monday.

Enjoying the lovely tropical weather. Mmmm, warm.

At 19:36 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Glad you had such a great mostly-off day. That's quite the haul you got there. I too would love to hear the story about the leather trench coat and pants with nowhere to go. But maybe it's more fun to imagine the stories ourselves. Still, it's sad that she didn't get to fulfill her plans.

14 is a size I look forward to myself. I have a few size 14 skirts waiting for me to join them. Never worn, just bought (on sale mostly) with hope.

Treated myself to dinner out tonight, and ate sensibly. Me, eating out, sensibly. Wasn't sure that was possible.

Must work tomorrow. I shouldn't grumble, since mine hostess and many others here clearly work far longer hours than I usually do. That last cold caused me to run out of sick leave before I ran out of sick. Making those days up means I'll have the vacation time built up again so I can come see you lovely people in June.

That sounds like an awesome time! Can't wait to see pics of the coat. I have been looking for a coat of a similar nature... The search continues.

This does not sound big but my bedroom is tidier than it has been in, well, two years. I figured if no one was ever getting invited up there, what difference did it make? Although the raccoons eating peanuts in the shell on the carpet last month was just about enough. Still need to reveal top of bureau and bookcase but have hope.

The cats are amused by cleaning but bore quickly when no mice are revealed.

Fanfic is cheaper than therapy.

I love to see Magic looking your friend's camera in the face. He is so much happier, and so very beautiful. And I am glad Cabal innards are better. He has good dog-parents.

Today I learned some of the many ways in which people mail things to themselves.

Usually not by intention.

Wee, isn't this fun!!

Well, yes...considering the alternative.

I will now keep an eye out for matching leather pants and trench coat, attempting to take themselves out on the town. They might mail themselves to Albuquerque! And it would be sad if they didn't make it simply because of postage due!!

Speaking of alternative, though, I am convinced that Magic is an alternative kitty. Hence his existence along a difference axis than the rest of us.

There are of course ways to fix this, but why? We can always tilt our laptops :)!!

hugs....and now to sleep, because I am back to *my* batcave at 04:00.

But I will enjoy reading up on y'all's adventures come the morning, so go out and have rockin' Friday nights!

Erm, not really rockin' here, Lys, sorry!. We ate out this evening, to celebrate payday and being moved (no dishes to wash tonight), watched some of "The Two Towers", and I'm set to watch some more "Torchwood" if I'm not too knackered. oops. please excuse the huge yawn. knackered it is, apparently.

Yay! Magic didn't run when a new person looked at him! Sounds like a fun day, Ms. Fabulous. :)

Tomorrow I am off to Scarborough Faire by myself. This is due to neither daughter behaving well this week. No fun for them this weekend. DD2 would have gone with me, then she screamed at her sister for not playing with her and ignored doing what I told her to do, more than once. DH is not so happy to have both of them tomorrow, even though I did offer to stay home. Sunday we're supposed to have storms, and I'm an hour and a half south of faire site plus two sections of construction on I-35.

I do feel sorry for DD2; she had to have five vaccinations today. ::sigh:: I really wish the nurse wouldn't tell her that they won't hurt. Anyway, she's ready to register for kindergarten now. Actually, she's ready to start, but that won't happen until the end of August.

At 01:14 Blogger Lexocat said...

Sounds like you scored indeed, Q!

Nice. And I am trying to imagine that mouse plate but not doing so well with it.

Love the Magic photo!

Oh, and ariandalen, sorry to hear of DD2's vax marathon. It's too late to help her this time around, but would her doc consider an Emla Rx in the future? Our new doc just gave us one for my highly needle-phobic boy to have on hand for shots, blood draws, and the like.

Vampi, we had an earthquake?

Na, I'm late in adding my congrats but they're heartfelt!

At 01:21 Blogger Marjorie said...

Good Morning All! Is anyone still up?

Q, so glad to hear you managed to actually take your day off, and find lots of fun things. I like the idea of the mouse-plate. (Somewhere, I have a necklace with a teeny tiny china mouse, in a tiny cage - must go look for it!)
The picture of Sideways Magic is great, too - awesome that he has made so much progress, in what is, really, ssuch a short space of time.

Emily - I've sent you a friend request on FB.

I am feeling very virtuous right now - It's only 7.15 and have cleaned the hob and done some laundry already (Of course, one might argue I ought to have cleaned the hob right after cooking, but I'm choosing to ignore that argument)

Got up earlyu as I have to take the car to be serviced - it's a lovely morning so the drive over should be nice, and I may be able to go for a short walk while they are servicing it. Hopefully it will be quick and I will have time to come home & vacuum before meeting new houseguest/lodger of a train at 2.30. I haven't shared a house with anyone for years, so it should be interesting (and fun, hopefully)

Good morning!

Sideways Magic makes me laugh. He's so talented, defying gravity like that. :)

Hurrah bargain leather! We need to see the coat in action.

Sp they've moved the workshop into the kiddie room at the library today, because there's an arts and crafts thing happening in our regular room. I hope they'll let us use the Big People Furniture, or it's going to be awkward.

Though perhaps I ought to think of something to do with letter blocks. :D

At 09:42 Blogger Phiala said...

Hm. Pick random letter blocks, come up with a sentence using words with those initials, and then everyone has to use it as a story prompt. :)

At 09:54 Blogger Jess said...

I was thinking we could just use them to spell rude words. Question is: how do we tie that into a discussion of Grace Paley's short story "Distance"?

At 10:04 Blogger Lyndyn said...

Tell you what, Phiala: we should have played Letter-Block Swearword Challenge. One of my workshoppers brought in this fantastic scene she'd written, with this wonderful, funny, sweary dialogue in-- and she couldn't bring herself to read the sweary bits aloud. She bleeped herself! But it's true to the character, I told her. It's true! She's officially my favorite person in the group. :)

$30? These are indeed hard times, but how much did she want it out of her house?

Oh - another word to the wise - clean it before you let it into the house. I bought a piano from a woman once, and when the moving guys were getting ready to roll it up the ramp, I noticed the dead bird in the back of the piano. Very dead. Very old. Wouldn't have been nice, though...

At 18:12 Blogger Lyndyn said...

At 21:34 Blogger dabbler said...

Oooh. Organs..we once bought a Hammond B2 at a silent auction, because it was described as a 'parlor organ.' $25.00. Almost the size of a small room. It lived with us for awhile (none of us play, but instruments follow us home...)(well, some of us play some of them, some times...) and then was given to a friend who did play. That was definitely a case of someone wanting it our of the house. I bid on it, sure that someone would outbid me, ut no.

And we had the fugue from Tocatta and Fugue in Dm as our wedding recessional. Mark's elderly aunt (the one who had been, at that time, engaged for 20 years) came up to me in the receiving line and said "WHO picked that music?" "Um, I did, Aunt Ethel, why?" It was MUCH TOO LOUD!" Made me laugh.

I appear to be anecdotal today...

The Bengals will get steak for breakfast, if they are good, and you will get pictures of all these finds, including organ tomorrow night.

And , my dears, restrain yourselves. Trust me when I tell you I have HEARD the organ jokes.

Yes. We move my organ tomorrow.

no thunderstorms here, but sun, oh my yes, the sun! about 20 C today, supposed to be a little warmer tomorrow, that has to be near 70 F about. it feels like summer, but we don't even have flowers anywhere yet. so odd.

according to Phiala's info, we should get tulips (leaves are curled at the base). not going to try for anything from seed i think, but may buy some plants to put in with the tulips and hollyhocks.

fiends who are talented with thread; say someone has knitted but not for years. how hard is a beanie/stocking hat to pull off? i want something lightweight but in black that i can wear all summer, and am not finding it anywhere, so thought i might make one myself. and felt like wondering out loud at experts, apparently. ;)

hope the weekend is treating everyone well.

GOL

lovely you had a fun evening out with friends, Ms. Fabulous.

At 23:14 Blogger ariandalen said...

Na, you'll be working in the round, probably on 3-4 double pointed needles. It really shouldn't be too hard. Definitely easier than a sock; no need to turn a heel. Depending on which direction you start from, you'll be either increasing or decreasing, neither of which are difficult.

Go for it!

At 23:18 Blogger ariandalen said...

Cool, Ms. Fabulous!
Well, at least as long as you can fit it in the room. ;)

At 23:26 Blogger Ticia said...

I'm watching The Wrestler right now and one thought keeps going through my brain....

Isn't The Romance Room upstairs?

At 23:28 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

No, Ticia, you are thinking of the Forest Bedroom. The Romance room is on the first floor, kind of a Victorian Parlour. Tho less so now that the couches are in there, more cosy.

At 23:30 Blogger gaypet said...

I actually did restrain myself. :) I really did mean that I enjoy music from the instrument... Oh never mind.

Good for you. And that is all. Glad you had a nice night out as well.

At 23:37 Blogger Ticia said...

Oh good. I was worried for your backs.

At 23:39 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Uh?? MY back????? I didn't sign up for moving the thing. It's like really heavy. My horse friends volunteered and Woodsman Hans kindly agreed.

Not sure it can be done. But just as sure it will be fun doing it. I'll take pics.

At 23:51 Blogger spacedlaw said...

So strange. To me a church organ should have all sorts of very long pipes which I do not see fitting in a house (even the spooky house).

At 23:51 Blogger Ticia said...

::snort:: What was I thinking?

Will the front steps still need to be negotiated?

At 23:55 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Sadly, Nathilie, no pipes. The world is an unfair place.

My horse friend swears he can back a horse trailer up anywhere a car can back up, so we will try for driveway, and in on top of the hill.

If he is wrong, we will make the news as he goes over the cliff on the side.

(OK, small cliff, better word: retaining wall.)

At 00:00 Blogger Ticia said...

I think a video is in order. Oh to be a fly on the wall...

At 00:02 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

If it is anything like dinner tonight it will truly be some fun...

At 00:09 Blogger Ticia said...

Exactly. I bet there's tons of laughter and fun.

At 00:19 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Minus the snoozled (or whatever you called them).

At 00:25 Blogger AletaMay said...

Oh man. That organ sounds so so cool. It sounds very like the organ in the church I grew up in. So much fun.

Writing weekend is still going well. Now is time to sleep so that I can get up early in the morning and dive back in to it!

Oh tonight after writing we watched The Visitor. Has anyone hear seen that film? I must say I really loved it. Bittersweet, which is my favorite flavor.

At 05:05 Blogger Marjorie said...

An Organ!?! WOW. I too was picturing pipes; will look forward to seeing the pictures in due course.

And will now worry about Hans' back instead of yours :-)

At 05:25 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Hi Fiends
I'm home from my tropical break, and vurry vurry tired. Just went cross eyed catching up on posts and comments.

What a bargain winning weekend you've had Quiche.

Ugh. me brain dead. Off to sleep in my own bed -the very best bit of coming home from a holiday.

At 08:57 Blogger Ticia said...

Welcome back Sally!

At 09:19 Blogger gaypet said...

Good morning cats and kitties! Any other Twin Cities Fiends going to the May Day parade? M and I will be there. If I can get my act together. I have a few hours to work that out.

Happy Sunday all!

At 09:29 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Morning all!

What? SO everyone SLEPT last night or something???

Gayle have some fun! I'm not. Moving organs and all...

At 09:31 Blogger gaypet said...

Have fun today, Q! And good luck to the backs involved. :)

At 09:33 Blogger spacedlaw said...

If that's any comfort, I slept very little and have been active since 05:25.
I think I should be makign some tea...

At 09:52 Blogger Lyndyn said...

Good morning, fiends!

I slept late - though - it probably doesn't count as I was also up later than usual.

At 10:26 Blogger Marjorie said...

Morning Q - I didn't exactly sleep late, although I did stay in bed ...

Have been dealing with papers to get all my reciepts etc off to the accountant, so she can do my tax return for me. Such joyous fun, of course!

Also out for a short walk into town to show C (My new house-mate, who mived in yesterday) where things are. She has offered to cook supprt tonight, which will be nice.

I shall be giving myself a break from paperwork shortly in favour of cutting the grass and re-potting the christmas cactus, as it seems to have come a reasonably nice day.

At 10:29 Blogger Lyndyn said...

I broke down and cut the grass yesterday - but I hated to do it for LO! it was a riot of purple and yellow wild flowers. People are stupid to prefer short plain old grass over spring wild flowers. I could feel all my neighbors glaring at me all week...

As I cut it, I couldn't help but think of bees...and all of you, of course! :)

At 10:35 Blogger Marjorie said...

Lyndyn, My grass is very dull - no wild flowers at all - it's a tiny area - 2 patches, one about 6' x 4', the other 6' x 6' so I don't have a lawn mower, and even after cutting with shears it's is still longish. If it were wildflowers I think I would leave it, as I have an enclosed back yard it wouldn't affect the neighbours!

At 10:41 Blogger Lyndyn said...

Marjorie - you could plant something like vinca there - nice evergreen leaves and pretty purple flowers in the spring time.

At 10:43 Blogger Lyndyn said...

Or...I think there are some nice thymes that grow low and are fragrant...

At 11:14 Blogger Kate T said...

Good morning all! My sister had Toccata and Fugue in D minor play on the mighty organ as exit music at her wedding 25 years ago - great stuff

Congrats on acquiring the organ. $30! You could wear your new leather coat and look fierce. Ah, to have a romance room...

Gorgeous day - I'm off to the garden as soon as possible. Happy Sunday to everyone.

At 11:15 Anonymous Kate said...

Oh look - I appeared with full name -

At 11:19 Blogger Lyndyn said...

hmm...we should ALL have romance rooms! Hmm...I think I'm going to start living my life like a romance novel... :)

At 11:32 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Mornin'

Na - Hats are pretty easy. Do you have a specific pattern in mind? If it's been a long time since knitting, you might prefer ones that start at the brim, since you'll have plenty of time to get back into it before you have to do decreases. Go for it!

I was early to be, late to rise today, so not much else to talk about. Debating between an afternoon knitting group and just puttering around at home. Both sound appealing.

At 11:50 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Of course, you do realize we will be wanting pictures of the organ and the full story.

At 12:12 Blogger Jess said...

Heh. At what point, I wonder, are the filthy organ jokes on Twitter going to spill over to here? It's all fun and games, Fiends, till someone pulls their Bach out. Don't say I didn't warn you. ;P

At 12:17 Blogger spacedlaw said...

I worry for Hans.

At 12:43 Blogger Na said...

ha, Kate we see you! full name and pic. (says the gal with wings in her blogger pic.)

thanks ariandalen and OSS! precious info. no pattern in mind, just a simple beanie/stocking cap/toque. the only knitting needles i still have are straight wooden ones--i love the way yarn stays on them. so drat, i'll have to visit a store! ;)

not touching the organ jokes.

oh, oops.

At 13:02 Blogger DataGoddess said...

Organ jokes on Twitter? You must be joking!!!

But will there be tulips on the organ?

At 14:29 Blogger dabbler said...

Ow. Just, ow.

At 15:55 Blogger Marjorie said...

Dabbler, oh dear. Are you Ok. I would hate to think that your last act was an desperate 'ow' on thiws blog...

At 16:04 Blogger Na said...

dabbler, you can be glad you missed the twitter ones. although jess got a good start on a bodice-ripper story.

At 16:04 Blogger Fluffy said...

Fluffy here - the after-the-garden-tour-fundraiser party is being held chez here tonight, and there is a small army in the back yard putting up all fods knows what. There are TIKI TORCHES! WTF? In my yard! At least the rain finally let up. The yard is soggy, but the sun finally came out about 20 minutes ago.

I was very afraid we'd have to cram 60 peeps in my not-so-large house. Keep fingers crossed. It will be martini time in about two hours. Then, fajitas! Then, more martinis!

At 16:05 Blogger Fluffy said...

And what is ow-y? ((hug))

At 16:35 Blogger Marjorie said...

fluffy, hope it doesn't rain. If it does, I feel sure the answer is more martinis.

At 17:03 Blogger dabbler said...

Oh dear... the ow was comment on the organ jokes. Didn't mean to worry anyone. I'm fine.

At 17:05 Blogger Phiala said...

So... If I say that I'd like to go grocery shopping soon because I have things to do tonight, and Nick insists that he must have a short nap first, and that was three hours ago, then I'm perfectly justified in doing the shopping and only buying what I want to eat, right?

At 17:32 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

New Organ required complete re-arranging of Romance Room, whch spilled over into the kitchen, which now looks like a cross between a living room and Garden, but it worked, had to move the fridge, and briefly thought how perfect it would be if I could simply move it to the deck, but then thought about winter and canceled that thought.

Downloading pics now.
