Blue Ribbon Honey At The Fair And Bell Jars....

Storms are popping up all over tonight! And we have a tornado watch, which means things might get interesting. Might not. But there's a chance. Cool. Had a great Weather Girl moment when I saw Western Minnesota covered in a tornado watch, and told The Birdchick I didn't get why we weren't too as it sure did FEEL like tornado weather, and an hour later, there we were.

Enough with the weather. Here's the Blue Ribbon Honey! We had a really fine time at the Fair today, The Birdchick and I. It was stormy then too, and we got into conversation with a sheriff's deputy who talked about the wall cloud that developed and the possibility of more storms (OK, so we are not done with the weather, what can I say, I like this stuff.) He said if it got any worse, he was going to commandeer the Mountain Dew Hummer, at which point I said he must deputize us so we could get in on that.

So he pulled out two "Honorary Sheriff Deputy" Stickers. Very cool.

Also I won a Kat Von D poster by shooting it with a Crossbow. Is this fair cool or what?

Our Fair has some strange things, as do most county fairs, I suspect. Here is a lovely lettuce. Third place. Don't know what beat it.

And 1/4th of an angel food cake. Not sure if it started out as whole and they needed to eat 3/4ths of it to judge, or if one can enter 1/4th of a cake.

This is the hive with the Bell Jar in it. There are three boxes, starting on the bottom, with brood and full of food and babies. As you move up, the two narrow ones are called Supers, and have Ross Rounds in them, for making comb honey, that will stay comb honey, in neat little circles. After that, the Bat Box and the one below it are for keeping the Bell Jar covered.

It's kind of hard to see here, but the Bees are starting to make comb in the Bell Jar, and will, we hope, fill it up. We watched them for some time today, and it was truly fascinating watching them carry wax and build. They haven't done much, but the Ross Rounds below aren't filled, so they are still working on filling that box, and then, will move more workers up as things get filled.

All in all, a fine day. I am hoping for cool storms tonight, and we will see what happens. It's so humid now my hair is curling. The Bengals had Tuna Night (always an event in the Spooky House) and are now sacked out. Underworld is on TV tonight which excites me, tho why I have no idea, not like I don't own the DVD.

But still.

Love and Fair, Weather, or Foul,
Lorraine

Well, we've got rain but the promised thunder storms have not arrived. However, the high today is 72 and the low tonight is 75 so I think some unsettled weather is headed in my direction.
Nice to see those blue ribbons.

we never have tornados down here...but be exciting/scary...

Congrats on the Blue Ribbons :D and can't wait to see the bell jar filled...
meanwhile, back to the dull translation work on neurosurgery :S nice for a Saturday night huh?

Dude, get in the basement! Huddle in the northwest corner, under a heavy piece of furniture! Pray.

*fears tornadoes*

Hurrah for champion honey! \o/ It's only a matter of time before Rival Beekepers, consumed with jealously, begin plotting against you. Watch out for white-suited men armed with jars of angry wasps.

So the bell jar doesn't just sit on top? Guess there would be too much light if you didn't cover it, actually. Bees like the dark, don't they.

Iceberg lettuce should not get prizes. It's mostly water, and contains minimal nutritional value. BAH!

Ally had tuna last night. She was delighted. Edie only sniffed. She likes the smell, but won't touch the stuff. She's weird.

act, i hate iceberg lettuce because it smells. yes it has a smell. yes, i'm weird.

the ross rounds are sooo cool.

congrats again on your spectacular honey. i was reading birdchick's blog about how heated honey tastes different from unheated fresh honey. i need to find some local honey so i can experience it. reading about it on your blogs makes me mouth water :)

Home on Saturday night. Spent much of the day fixing an electrical problem...same problem, several times. By the time we finished, the feed to the tent didn't work at all. Bah!

Tomorrow.

Ready for bed at 8:15 pm. Bah again.

It is awesome when beloved shows or movies are on TV, no matter whether one owns the DVD. That's philosopher Emily's tip for you tonight.

Tomorrow I will see the pictures you posted. Hopefully. They are not working with our new network.

Ah, the pictures work now.

as for Underworld, it is the randomness of it coming on tv versus walking over and putting in the DVD. good stuff either way

At 20:29 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Too true. And this Underworld has lots of commentary and behind the scenes. Very fun.

No tornadoes YET, but one can hope for storms.

I don not miss waking up to tornado sirens. Other than that, I miss everything else about living in Minnesota. Although, I did go to a crazy private liberal arts college there.

I especially miss finding a snowdrift, putting my hat and mittens on it, and then sending pictures home to Florida about me getting lost in a snow drift.

The fairs in FL are kind of lame. We don't really have baking and growing and honeying competitions, but we do have ag competitions, like who can raise the biggest cow, which will then, I guess, get sold and slaughtered. And, we have deep fried pickles and twinkies and oreos and coke and whatever else they can deep fry.

At 20:37 Blogger Uisge said...

I agree that celery, watermelon and lettuce have a smell. I like the way they smell.

Tornado reported in north of Mound.

Tomorrow is the big house/yard full of 5 yr olds and a bouncy house day. Getting things ready, chicken into marinade, patio chairs hosed off, mother in law roped in.

She is a lovely woman but she talks and talks and talks...even more than me!!! She just wants to help, which means she can hover looking for somethign to do.

The blue ribbons are awesomely huge and blue and grand-prizey! Yum!

Iceberg lettuce is high in vitamin K. My sister cant' eat much of it because of that (causes clots). i think it's water and K and that's it ;-)

Romaine ont he other hand is lovely and i must make a caesar salad out of it now.

Yay for five-year-olds!

Spent a night at Barnes and Noble. This of course is always always always a good thing. Oh right, take away one "always" for the occasional pervert, but other than that, what better way to spend a Saturday night? (I know, you are all thinking, this teen has no life. But tell me how many teens get to fly to Minnesota to see the Fiends, eh?)

At 21:02 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Yup. Tornadoes near Plymouth. Not near here, north of Minneapolis.

I think spending the evening in a library is a right fine thing. Did it myself as a teen. SO there.

I'm still recovering from bronchitis, and from the discovery of a HUGE miscommunication between my sweetie and me. It's a good thing we finally figured it out, but it's a hurty thing, too. Bah.

Wow, Lioness. High of 72 F and low of 75 F. Been a while since our lows were either of those temps. Oh, well, Fall will get here eventually. Maybe. Or maybe Winter.
Heck, I'd even settle for a nice all night rain. ::sigh::
I don't live in the desert. Really. Ask Fluffy.

Hope you meet more friends at Irish Fair tomorrow, Ms. Fabulous. :)

And hope you're feeling better and swigging some good syrup.

At 21:51 Blogger Lioness said...

ariandalen, we've had an unusually cold and rainy summer this year- we seem to be getting the Northwest coast's weather while they have had high high temps and sun. I wouldn't mind but my veggies aren't growing.

Bookstores have sleepovers too? Was there a special occasion, EmilyLady?

At 22:30 Blogger ariandalen said...

Ah. Yes, the Pacific Northwest has had a really hot summer, for them. My in-laws live north of Seattle, and we called to make sure they were okay a few weeks ago as they don't have A/C. It wasn't hot to us when we were there the first week of July, but we're in Central Texas. Plus, it still gets below 70 F at night there, even when the high was 90 F.
We're just trying to keep our garden from burning up. Lots of cantaloupe blossoms, squash blossoms, cucumber blossoms, and very little pollination going on. The heirloom tomato plants are still hanging in there, as are the bell peppers. It's also about time to plant pumpkins. We have a butternut squash vine that volunteered after DH threw one out last winter, I think. We're getting lots of butternut squashes.

poorly here, with respect to vacuum cleaners and Faires: no Faire for thousands of miles, and my vacuum cleaner is an i-don't-know-what i've had for over ten years, and prolly should have been replaced eons ago, but it still more or less works and oh-my-fods the things are expensive.

At 05:12 Blogger Marjorie said...

Good Morning All! I hope the storms and potential tornados limited themselves to being exciting to watch and did not go so far as causing any damage.

I love the Bell-Jar bees. Can't wait to see how that develops. Also, looking at the ictures made me realise I have never had honeycomb, only honey. May have to go looking for some to try.

Now, it's a beautiful sunny day, I have finishedthe essential chores and I have fresh coffee and croissants and strawberries... And my sister has invited me to joint them for a weekend's sailing next weekend. What could be nicer?

At 06:10 Anonymous kali_licious said...

I'm actually kind of jealous of all those lovely storms..we're at 90% humidity and under a heat advisory for the whole state of Indiana. (I know you Texans will laugh, but I'm a total wimp once the humidity gets this high..plus I don't have AC.;)

Lovely blue ribbons..that Ross Round did turn out some perfect comb.

I love the fact that the deputy had those stickers on hand.:)

Emily, I think an overnight in a bookstore sounds heavenly.

Toni I hope you're beating back the Evil Bronchial Ick. (and that the hurty subsides soon)

Sally - Good Try! I tell myself I won't get online all the time and I never make it that long.;)

Chantrelle - My Dad keeps trying to bait me on that subject but I'm just not gonna go there. He knows I don't agree with him, he just needs to let it go, but he won't.:/
There needs to be some kind of remote you can use to skip to a new topic when those kind of conversations start, IMHO.;)

At 08:47 Blogger Lioness said...

I have a friend who loves to argue about politics. I don't.
I vote. He doesn't. A remote would come in very handy!
We are getting a nice mix of rain and sun so far this morning. It's enough to keep me inside and cleaning instead of outside where I'd rather be. But the house has dust elephants.

At 09:55 Anonymous Wendy Withers said...

I love debating politics with people who respect my opinion. My ex thinks he's better than everyone else, so he makes everything personal. So, if he disagrees with someone, he will start to personally attack them (and he disagrees with just about everyone). My friend Patrick, on the other hand, is great to debate with, because he really wants to understand why everyone believes the way they do.

Last week, thieves stole a bunch of my money out of my bank account (all of it plus $200) so now I'm stuck without a debit card and get to scrape together change to get coffee on the way to my mom's house, because I was out dancing at the local goth-y type club late last night and now I want to burrow under my covers and go to sleep. (Don't fear, I have papers that prove I was hundreds of miles away from where my card number was used, so I should get the money back. All of the overdraft fees have already been refunded.) Oh, and yesterday I went thrifting and bought an awesome skirt for $3. It looks like a cross between a garbage bag and a prom dress skirt. That's my random ramblings for today.

At 10:26 Blogger EmilyLady said...

Actually it was not an OVERNIGHT in the bookstore, just an evening spent hanging out there. And it was great. I had a wonderful time. The only times I've spent long nights there were for Harry Potter books, which was one hundred thousand percent fantastic.

At 13:08 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

No tornadoes last night, they went north of us.. Ah well...We did get sirens tho.

Wendy, No Fun!!!! No fun at all!

Just picked up the honey at the fair. Looked for someone to show my claim ticket to, but found no one. They did chase my car down tho.

The lecture I got! It was pretty funny. I kept a straight face, but it wasn't easy.

I wanted to say "Yes, you've busted me. I am stealing this, and only this blue ribbon honey.."

Yay blue ribbon bees! Boo storms. I love them, I love the energy in the air right before a storm breaks, but it worries me that they can be so destructive.

Today I bought local honey at our farmers market (Local Oakland neighborhood honey and a small jar of Orange Blossom Honey as a treat) as well as cheese, olive oil, tuna, and any number of delicious fruits and veggies. The market is *dangerous*.

Chantrelle-- My mother in law was here for four days. Peter and I spent a LOT of the time biting our tongues to avoid just that type of argument. (I need to get back to you about the hoop in email, I know!)

Emily-- You are among friends (and fiends) who spent many an evening at the library and bookstores for fun, I have no doubt. When I was in school, I spent my break periods in the library shelving books. Know that life gets better and people spend less time worrying about the 'coolness' of your evening activities. :)

My bengals are restless.

And I think Blogger should watch itself, or Honorary AND Fiendish Deputy Quiche will throw it in the clink. And lose the key...

And the bell jar thing is TOO cool. I think Boss posted a link to someone else's awhile ago and it was amazing to watch the sequence.

And Sally, One Day At A Time! Next time, maybe you'll make it to 3 pm without the Interwebs. Do they have a 12-step group for this? Not that I need to know. *ahem*

Aline, that video is hilarious! I like how, when the cat got stuck, it went to get in another box. Sort of like trying to drink your way out of being drunk.

At 16:51 Blogger ariandalen said...

No, kali, I don't think you're a wimp. We may have been having 100+ degree days, but our humidity hasn't been anywhere near 90%. Good luck drinking your air. :P

There's a lot I could say about the HOT Fair and Rodeo. let it suffice that the General Manager decided to throw the baby out with the bath water when it was time to rework the categories for entry on the Fair side. He's much more interested in promoting the Rodeo.

My Sunday is so exciting. I've put up a load from the dishwasher. I'm also washing clothes.

So about that long s. Mostly, it was only used at the beginning or middle of words. Not at the end. Sometimes it was just the long vertical stroke, but it could also have the left half of the crossbar that makes it look like an f. More gory details can be found here.

Not much going on here. I've been working on the most boring of all boring data cleanup projects at work. Tomorrow I think I'll listen to music. It's that boring. But we have to finish it tomorrow so the collection can go live on Wednesday.

Ani- the aha! was fabulous.

At 20:05 Blogger Fluffy said...

Loved Ani's video. And the photos on the side!

Revelle had (has, akcherly) a migraine today - I keep trying every couple of hours to wake her in case it's gone, but no luck yet. She didn't even want chocolate! She did want me to read to her, so I did two hours of The Fifth Elephant before I tuckered out.

At 20:06 Blogger Fluffy said...

It just occurred to me I haven't read to her in quite a while, and it kind of chokes me up that it's what she wanted when she felt really bad.

At 20:17 Blogger Chantrelle said...

Had an awesome bday party yesterday. I had to share this photo. My 67 yr old mom in the
bouncy house! And the awesome star wars birthday cake.

Inlaws flew home today. I love them, but I am so happy to have my house back.

At 20:46 Blogger Beez said...

*laughing* I think I love your mom. Who's in the bouncy house with her?

At 20:54 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Can see where you get your energy from Chantrelle.
Yah for having the house to yourselves again

At 20:59 Blogger Chantrelle said...

Ben is on top of my stepdad!

I couldn't believe she got in, i ran so fast to get my camera :)

I stuck to the big slide. It was so hot we hosed it down so it was a great way to cool off! I can't bounce in there, it triggers my vertigo!!

At 21:18 Blogger dabbler said...

Ani, great aha moment...

EmilyLady, what show? Glad you didn't follow Marjorie's lead and really break your leg.

No brain. had other things to say...wonder what they were.

Ah. Uisge, I haven't seen an email from your friend Susan, and am particularly interested in not missing it by mistake. Please tell her if she emails and I don't respond, to try again...life is busy, spam is abundant, and I sometimes delete things I want.

Need to go to bed. Peaceful dreams to all...and peaceful days to the so endowed.

At 21:18 Blogger dabbler said...

Oh...and Aline, loved the cat video. So amusingly arrogant while foolish!

At 21:21 Blogger EmilyLady said...

Amazingly awesome birthday cake, Chantrelle.

Dabbler, we're doing "Jack and the Beanstalk". There were so few characters that most of us who did get roles were cast into the teensiest of parts. But I don't mind - last year was a play of flying colors; most of the kids and parents in the theatre group know me not as Emily but the Wicked Queen in Snow White. I still catch kids hiding behind their parents when they see me coming!

Andrea, your video was so marvelous.

At 21:24 Blogger ariandalen said...

It looks like a happy news day so far in Fiendom.

At 21:29 Blogger EmilyLady said...

You're right, Ariandalen. It does seem that way. You know it's funny how the Fiendom really does bring a big smile to my lips. I have a huge grin plastered on my face right now.

This: http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/07/19/japan.jellyfish/

Truly giant jellyfish.
Just because.

At 21:35 Blogger Dragonsally said...

OMG, those jellyfish are things of nightmares. Imagine getting caught in those tentacles. YUK.

At 21:41 Anonymous kali_licious said...

Ani, I really wanted to watch your video but my ancient computer doesn't like the file or something.:( I'll have to catch it when I get the new 'puter in the next couple of weeks. I'm leaning towards a Mac book..any recommendations, Fiends?

Sally, that is JUST what I thought of first when I saw the vaccine mentioned..teensy little syringes.

Marjorie, how awful! I always have been scared that that was going to happen to me..every time I've bellydanced on a little stage, I'm more scared of that than dancing.

Emily, you said Jack and the Beanstalk and now my jukebox brain is singing "Giants in the Sky" from Into the Woods. I think I listen to too much Sondheim sometimes.;)

At 21:45 Anonymous kali_licious said...

OMG, Dabbler those are scary! I don't think I'd want to go in the water anywhere near where those are.
Icky!

At 22:01 Blogger Dragonsally said...

great minds Kali!

Where is the Quiche? Has she been swamped with post-Hugo work?

At 22:23 Blogger ariandalen said...

I was wondering the same thing, Sally. I'm sure she gets swamped with requests for interviews and appearances for Boss every time he wins another award. That, and/or bad moon time.

At 22:47 Blogger Beez said...

(((((breathing space vibe)))))

For Quichie.

At 23:03 Blogger AletaMay said...

Great video Ani! Well done!

I seem to be needing much extra sleep today. Sleep is nice but not very productive.

Love Mom in the Bouncy House! Wonderful.

Sal is it you that made this big mess in my house? With your mind? Certainly couldn't be me. My mind is not that powerful.

Hoping our Quiche is keeping her head above water.

At 23:16 Blogger vampi said...

Ani, your aha moment made me teary eyed. *snugs* thank you.

kali, i do like my macbook, i don't know that i would recommend it though. mac does soem things really fan-freaking-tastic, and others drive me up the wall. take for instance the cd's i tried to burn for one sock short at fiendom, they are coasters. (oss, i'm still looking for my dvd's so i can try again) for non-windows operating system, i really loved ubuntu. there was lots of freely available software to do practically everything i wanted to do. wiht mac i find the software to be cost prohibitive sometimes. in any case, i would recommend a computer that is either a mac or unbuntu, i got nothing nice to say about windows, unless you are a gamer.

At 23:57 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Yes, it was me Aleta. Shame I can't use my telekinetic powers to clean my own home, instead of messing with the homes of my Fiends.

'Morning all. Awesome video, Ani!

Jack & the Beanstalk sounds fun! The time I fell off the stage we had a proper stage (blocks) having rehersed without. we were walking around a table, from the back to the front of the stage and I was on the outside of the group and got shuffled off sideways. I was 11 at the time. I have always regretted that getting carted off in an ambulance meant that I missed seeing 3 of out local farmers performing '3 Little Maids from School'in full drag...

I'm sure your show will be much more sucessful, Emily.

I see Boss has just tweeted a link here, for the honey, so no doubt there will be a few new fiends showing up.

Think sympathetic thoughts, fiends. I have to go to the dentist this morning. It's only for a check up, but I have a phobia about dentists...

At 01:53 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Ohhh -luck for the dentist Marjorie. Hope your teeth pass the test with flying colours

At 06:41 Blogger dabbler said...

Sorry, Sal and Kali, Didn't mean to contribute to nightmares.

They reminded me, a bit, of the animated short film 'Varmints' by Marc Craste from a book of the same name by Helen Ward. Powerful, disturbing and weirdly beautiful. Saw it with the Oscar shorts film tour this year. I strongly recommend it. The Jellyfish don't come in til the end.

And I do think those giant ones are beautiful...the same way tigers are. From a distance.

At 08:07 Blogger One Sock Short said...

At 09:17 Blogger Ani said...

Thanks for the happy vibes, everyone! I did have a lot of fun doing it, and my theory is if you're having fun and you have something to say, then it will be fine no matter what.

Marjorie you are very brave, I am terrified of the dentist!

Seems to me that the whole concept of trophies in general would be vastly improved if they were presented in popsicle form: cherry, grape, orange creamsicle, and fudgey.

Yeah, Ani, let me know what you've got, and what you like the look of.

At 18:19 Blogger vampi said...

oh i used to love the banana popsicles when i was little. now i can't stand them, the smell makes me want to gag.

also remember the super big flavorices you could get at lawsons? man i used to love those. and i am so amused that the lawsons is big in japan now and no where in america.

i would love me a flavorice award.

I still like those banana popsicles. But I didn't have them as a child...

At 20:31 Blogger ariandalen said...

I'm not sure I've ever had a Flavorice. Popsicles, yes. Honest to Fod Slurpees, yes. Flavorice, don't think so. I may even have had a banana Popsicle, but that would have been, oh, forty years ago.

Yup.

At 13:36 Blogger ariandalen said...

Phiala, who makes chocolate bunny grahams? Pepperidge Farms makes S'Mores Goldfish, and Nabisco makes honey graham honeybees, and I've seen various other sea creature cheddar crackers, but I haven't seen chocolate graham bunnies.

At 13:41 Blogger Phiala said...

Chocolate (and other flavors) of Bunny Grahams come from Annie's. And read this too.

At 13:57 Blogger louisa said...

I LOVE Annies. I miss Annies. They have the best mac cheese, I always bring a box back with me. I hope I never have to try and explain that to a customs officer, though I'm quite sure they get much weirder stuff smuggled in.

At 14:28 Blogger ariandalen said...

I don't think our big supermarket carries Annie's grahams. I've seen the mac and cheese, but not the grahams. Granted, my primary reason for not buying Annie's is the price.
It's hard to beat $0.99-$1.19 a box for HEB Buddy Grahams, though the bunnies are cuter than a cartoon full grocery bag.

Way to go Birdchick!

At 15:09 Blogger Adri said...

Ari-- thou shalt not mention HEB. I'm still in mourning. Only bad thing about leaving Texas so far!

On the way home from work today, Shakira's "She Wolf" came on the radio.

When she rhymed something with "lycanthropy", I thought, "Wow, her command of English is getting advanced!"

And then I realized she was probably using the Quiche School of Foreign Language Study: watching Underworld constantly.

At 17:26 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Very funny Danguy! And what is WRONG with watching Underworld constantly I ask you???

Hi Fiends, give me another to catch up and I will be with you again....

At 17:53 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Quiche! Quiche! We've missed you.

Stop with the talk of food already, I haven't had breakfast yet.

And yes, that boy in Kyle's photos is, ahhh, interesting.

Where can one buy the t'shirt Jess? It is all sorts of awesomeness.

Right, time to shower and get the day on the road.

At 18:57 Blogger Dan Guy said...

Nothing at all wrong with watching the Underworld movies constantly, or Milla J's oevre, IMHO.

I had a good friend, growing up, of whom that young man reminds me. This is him now.

At 19:28 Blogger Jess said...

Argh. Just went looking for it, Sally, and can't find it. Nor can we remember the name of the company. Do know that it was the only tee shirt on their website not for sale, because of copyright issues. If I find out, though, I'll let you know.

Dan, that man has the look of a developer about him. He's got the regulation haircut, anyway.

Hi, Quiche! :) Hope you're feeling better. Made Rat tonight. Am particularly proud of it because I couldn't remember exactly how to make your Rat recipe, apart from lots of garlic, tomatoes, and eggplant. Kind of made it up as I went along. It was good.

Ani - Blue Door (st Paul) and Town Talk (mpls) both have deep fried pickles. FYI

Spacedlaw - Love, love, love the tibetan anatomy paintings.

Dabbler - Susan's internet was down and just came back up today. I'll double check that she's emailed you.

Aleta - thank you for sharing that wonderful story.

At 06:20 Blogger Phiala said...

Uisge, there's a perfume that smells like old books. I have some, and it does. (Other places have cheaper small decants.)

And now, on to the next post!

At 08:17 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Uisge and Phiala - I've heard of the perfume, but never smelled it. But, ah yes, the sound! Nothing sounds quite like handmade paper. Though it's really the sizing that gives it that characteristic soft crackle. Imagine a room full of just that sound as a dozen people silently collate books.

At 21:30 Blogger Phiala said...

The perfume smells like an old leather-bound book. But unfortunately not the one I wanted it to smell like, but a different one. Still very accurate though.

What? Books smell different depending on binding, paper, age, storage conditions.

At 21:45 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Indeed. Red rot would probably not be a huge seller, I'm guessing...
