Rest In Peace, Pod.....

It is with great sadness that I write that Pod, one of Boss's Library Cats, passed away last night, at the age of, more or less, 17.

She and her friend, Hermoinie, have been old for a while, and had some troubles but yesterday Pod wasn't moving much at all. I thought perhaps things weren't good and called the vet for a house call, and called the Boss to let him know. I had thought about taking them into the vet last week, but it is such a traumatic experience for them, I put it off.

Being nearly 18, there isn't a lot one can do. It was her time, and I am glad to say she got to die at home, with her friend curled near her. I said all the things I wanted to her before I left last night, and petted her. I told her we loved her, and she had been a good friend, and it was ok to go on. She put her head in my hand, and gave a little mew.

Pod and Hermoinie came from a New York City shelter shortly after Boss moved to the Midwest. They were always a little fearful of people and didn't like the large space of the house. Pod really didn't like it, and so we put her in my then bedroom and she lived with me, which we both liked. I had a bed with a high headboard which she would sit on until I moved while sleeping then POUNCE! Hours of fun, if not sleep.

After Maddy came along, it was clear Hermoinie did not approve. (We noticed this as she would poop in Maddy's bed.) We decided to give them their own space, where they could be alone, except for visits.

They became the Library Cats.

This made them very happy.

The vet came this morning, to look at Hermoinie. The good news is, tho old, she is a fine old lady, and we made some changes for her, to be more comfortable. She is really going to miss Pod.

I think, one of the hardest things I have had to do was picking Pod up this morning and taking her from Hermoinie. I won't forget that look in her eyes. She knew.

Her real name was Nocturne. We called her Pod until she might grow into it.

We had a thing, Pod and I. I know it was time, but I miss her.

RIP Pod...

Lorraine

Poor Pod. She was so cute (and a tad diffident of strangers). She was also the one you had to give shots to, if I remember well.
Hermione is going to feel lonely now, without her companion...

Aw.

Poor Pod, and you, and Boss and family. And particularly Hermione.

But I have trouble picturing a better life for a rescue cat than as a library cat in that house.

I'm sorry for your, and especially Hermione's, loss, but what a wonderful long, happy life Pod has had.

You and your Boss and the whole family have been such saints for cats. That's good work that you do.

Hugs to you, and ear scritches to Hermione. If Hermione is like our Adventure, she will become more people friendly after this loss.

And watch for ghost cats. Every so often I seem to catch a glimpse pf one of our departed pusses, sidling through time and space, just passing through.

Very sorry for your loss, but it sounds like things went as well as could be hoped - she was surrounded by those who loved her, not alone, not afraid.

I'm so sorry to hear about Pod's passing. She did live a good, long life in a loving home--and that's wonderful.

Losing a beloved pet is never easy. This I know. It's good that you were there, and that it happened at home.

Many hugs and good thoughts...

It is good to hear she didn't have to leave all that was comfortable and familiar to her at the end. So important, for a cat especially.

Warm thoughts for you all, Hermione in particular.

A Lady always knows when it is time to leave.

It makes me smile to think of Pod and Hermione wandering around stacks of books, on the hunt for warm sunbeams, or the occasional mouse.

I think missing dear departed pets is a wonderful legacy that somehow transcends the pain. I hope that the pain eases soon for you, and you can just sit and smile at the thought of being pounced on in the night.

Rest in Peace, Pod.

I am so sorry for your loss, my dear... a gentle way to pass, for Pod, and that at least is a not bad thing. But sadness for you and Hermione, afters. Angus was so bereft after Archie went that we had to get him his own kitten. So I, too, think Hermione might need more scritches....attention....et cetera from you now.

Hugs and snuggs for both of you.

At 18:48 Blogger Chantrelle said...

Oh Q, so sad :( Our last kitty is 18 and moving more and more slowly. He's an outdoor kitty and has been wandering in the house a lot more lately, not a good sign. So this hit close to home. We've been talking to Ben about how Johann will be going away sometime in the nearish future :(

Our former housemate's cat just passed 2 days ago too. He showed up at our place when we all lived together. Hubby named him Heimlich because he always had his tongue sticking out like someone squeezed him. The name stuck. Housemate would yell out the door everynight, "HEIMLICH!!!" to get him to come sleep in side.

It's a sad week for the kitty world.

*Hugs* to you and the whole family (human and feline).

I am sorry for the loss. I hope both of my kitties live to be 18 and happy. I think the highest gauge of my success will be whether or not I can have a creaky, rambling old house full of cats where they can all have their own room to move about.

At 07:10 Blogger elfgirl said...

Oh, Hermione. I'm glad she was there when Pod crossed. It's very hard on kitties when companions simply vanish. Good journeys to Pod--hopefully there's a corner of the Summerlands that won't be too big for her. A nook of her own, as it were.

I am teary. Thank you to you and Boss for giving a home to two difficult shelter kitties. You're no stranger to prickly kitties, but most people just don't want to make the extra effort. We are currently catless because of health issues. So, for now, we donate time and money to Good Mews, until we have the ability to bring a pair home again.

This is something that has never happened to me in a restaurant.

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. I know how devastating it can be. You and Boss & family provided her with nothing but the best--love, care, attention. Sometimes, it's really hard to express how much they mean to us.
Our Ragdoll, Sophia, died four years ago today as a result of an allergic reaction to a rabies shot. The vet that gave her the shot treated us as though we were overreacting when on the 23rd, after all the oxygen therapy & epinephrine, benadryl, & lasix injections performed on the 22nd about two hours
after she got the shot, she still wasn't "herself." Later that night, we had to take her to Vet. Hosp. of the Univ. of PA. She went into cardiac arrest on the night of the 24th and we got "the phone call." I'll never forget my boyfriend saying, "Just let her go."
(I'm crying as I write this.) She has a Rainbow Residency on RainbowsBridge.com. and her ashes are still in our bedroom.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, Boss, & family, and especially for Hermione.

i gots questions.

how did you get into playing violin? are there other instruments besides the pipes you want to learn to play? how are you going to top the 3 bow masterpiece? do you read music?

i played viola in school, but haven't in ages. it did ruin my ability to read music, because viola uses a different clef. i can figure out notes on the treble clef, but it's not intuitive anymore. (i am an orch dork. i was a band hag but couldn't wrangle the 2 instruments on my 2 mile walk home so dropped band)

Ooh, questions. Let's see. How do you manage to look so awesome in pigtails? I could never ever do that. Ever. Not even if they were a purple.

A purple. Oh please. I really just meant purple.

Don't beat yourself up, Emily. We all make odd grammatical typos at times. I know I've made my share. :)
Questions, questions, questions...do I have a question?

Ah! I do. :)
When do we get to read the next Night Garden entry from you?

Hi, Q. If you're taking requests, I'd love a cat update. How are they liking the summer with their screened in porch? How's everyone adjusting and getting along?

Sorry if I'm asking for repeat, but I've been out of touch taking care of my mom. She's starting chemo next week, which she's looking forward to. Hopefully, it'll help her feel a bit better.

Thanks. Erin

Erin, has she had chemo before?

William is watching Coraline again. It is really so unusual for him to watch one movie over and over and over. He loves it.

And it's funny, he asks all these philosophical questions about it; I can't always answer them.

Woot! New blog up! Finally! Didn't answer half the questions!

But it was fun...Even if I over Bengaled a bit.

No such thing as over-Bengaling.

I just read the news about Bill Nighy's latest role. Too cool! Viktor, Slartibartfast, Rufus Scrimgeour, Billy Mack, and now whoever your illustrious Boss writes for him.

You totally have to get him on the phone and pretend you're talking to Viktor. ^_^

Thank you so much, Beez. You made me cry (again) remembering my girl who was with me for too short a time.
