Bobcats and Bengals...

I do want to write about the Royals tonight, but first I thought I would share with what HAS to be the best cure for PMS ever. Yes, the Bobcat. Or Skidster as it is called. This thing has POWER and with it one can destroy just about anything!

I didn't, er, destroy anything. I, after a lesson from Woodsman Hans, just drove it down the driveway. We have it rented for him to do some serious woods clearing, and he knew I really wanted to give it a try, so when he was done today, he brought it up and said "You know you want to" Sure did! I wanted to drive it into town, clearing anything in my way, and perhaps stopping for groceries, but once IN it, I thought down the driveway was perhaps enough.

The Royals, King Lear the Huge and Little Queen Mab are doing mostly great. They are loving their newly expanded rooms. Lear jumps on the bed when I am there, generally early in the morning, and comes up for pets and scritches. I found out what THE BENGAL HEAD BUTT really meant this morning. I'd thought I had known, but the gentle head butts of Venus and Mim were not in a league with the WHOLLOP I got from a Lear wanting his breakfast.

Nearly 20 pounds of WHOP with the head. I guess I am glad it wasn't the Claw Swipe, but I can tell you, it wakes you UP.

The one trouble I am having, and need advice on, is as you can see, Lear is HUGE. Mab is a good sized Kitty, but he is HUGE. And starving. All the time. I can't give him as much Fancy Feast as he can eat, it's not good for him, and his stomach gets upset. (Wake up #2 this morning. Didn't come out the mouth, get my drift)

I am going to try mixing ground beef into his bit of fancy feast, to make it more and see if that helps. He also gets free choice dry, which he doesn't much like. Loves steak, but hard to afford cooking steak every night. Tho is costs the same or less than the canned.

I want to make sure he is getting the right foods, and enough vitties and such, and can try ground turkey, and boiled chicken is always good, but I can't fill him UP. Who has Bengals? What do you do?

Any ideas? How much should a cat eat in a day? We've always done free choice dry and been fine, but these guys want MEAT.

I am loving having them for all time. Mab is so suite and loving, and mews for pets. She won't eat anything but dry and seems happy, once in a while she will have a little canned, but it's lard as she won't leave Lear when he eats, and Lear can eat a can in less than 30 seconds. No kidding there.

Both of them run to me when I come in now, and love to be petted, but are still timid. We've made a bit of progress having Merry Housekeeper feed them at the bottom of the stairs, which if she doesn't come into the territory, Lear is ok with. As long as she has steak. But no one else, and she had best not come UP.

They are both sweet and a joy, and even if it has taken some getting used to, having them for real, not sure I would trade it. Miss having Venus and Mim, but I can always sleep down in the Romance Room some nights, I suppose.

There. I drove a huge Thing With Claws, and am trying to feed five Leopards. Not life for a timid girl, I am thinking, but it works for me.

More adventures coming soon!

Love, Bobcats and Bengals,
Lorraine

You have a claw theme today, between the bobcat and the Royals :-D

This is the recipe given to me when Tysie was diagnosed with diabeties, to make up.
960g raw muscle meat
300g raw heart
150g liver
1 1/2 teaspoon of ground egg shell OR 640 g of pet mince (which is ground up carcass, ie bones and meat)and one level teaspoon of taurine (buy it from online pet supplies)
Make up and freeze in meal size portions. It has all the nutrients a cat needs AND because of all the meat and ground bone/egg shell is filling.
It is suggested to use your own meat grinder for the best results.
It has everything

And you look like you are having way too much fun in the bobcat.

The neighbor across the street has rented a Bobcat. I have no idea what he's doing with it, ultimately. He's destroyed all of his lawn, so far.

Now I'm tempted to sneak out and take it for a spin.

At 19:10 Blogger turtlesong said...

if his majesty can stand it, i would seriously recommend having him checked for diabetes and other endocrine abnormalities. it is definitely not normal for him to be wanting that much food. it may be his thyroid. . . .

At 19:12 Blogger Unknown said...

That Bobcat looks like a whole lotta fun. I'd love to see you (or attempt it myself) drive that through traffic. What a hoot.

Lear and Mab look Fab!

He doesn't look skinny to me, if anything, a little podgy, so has no real reason to be so hungry all the time.

I'm not a Bengal person, but I do have a cat that loves his food (fatLouie) and is always stealing everyone elses. We have been told by the vet that he runs a risk of developing diabetes if he carries on like this. Yikes!

So, maybe Lear's food issues are psychological rather than nutrition related? Maybe he is comfort or boredom eating? (cats can be like humans in that respect)

I definitely find that my cats (who have constant access to three - count them- varieties of dry food at all times) will finally give up and eat even the dry food they didn't seem interested in if I refuse to give in and open Yet Another pouch of Felix wet food (which would have been harvested for jelly and the meat left half uneaten)

I don't really know how it goes for indoor cats. Mine go out all the time and run about so get hungry, but are also prone to getting themselves a snack on the outside too.

Good luck, I hope you sort it out. Mine also love Dentabit treats and sometimes just a few of those is enough when they fancy a 'snack'.

Also, I give them grilled chicken and fish (we have half, they have half) and they love that. They don't seem to like red meat at all.

Well, I've said it before and I will say it again: my mother could never handle even one Bengal. Yay for the Bobcat cure. That's great. I'm glad you're back!

Ever tried a really high quality grain free food? Like Evo or Instinct? A lot better for your cat, and easier than feeding raw. If you do decide to supplement with a lot of meat PLEASE do research to make sure you are feeding a balanced diet. Everyone has a different opinion. I did it for 7 years and my cats did wonderful on it. I think a vet visit is in order any way you go though.

Happy Huge Things With Claws Day!

That last picture is the first one where I could really see the size difference between Lear and Mab. Wow. I've got nothing on the advice front. I've only had a sedentary, indoor-only kitty who is usually pretty happy with the light kibble the vet recommends. But it sure is great to hear how at home with you they've become.

At 20:21 Blogger Unknown said...

i've got 3 bengals. 2 of them could eat constantly, one only eats when we're near. i've found that, like us, they want to eat when their bored. so when they're crying and herding me to the food place i'll pick up toys and play instead. and by play i mean Tug O'War or toss-n-fetch. any game that gets them jumping and running and attacking. then, after all that they typically crash out instead of begging for food. basically i'm just redirecting their energy/attention.

also that head butt thing and then you do something (action/reaction). be careful it doesn't turn into some Alpha Attitude.
personally i ignore mine when they push me around. i'm the boss and i only ACT not REACT. ymmv

missed your posts...

That BOBCAT looks sooo fun to drive! We would have a blast Deva. Looks like you did. Good thing I wasn't there. We would probably have gotten into a little trouble. How fast does that thing go anyway? NOT FAST ENOUGH!
Love you all!

I love it! I want a Skidster! I think I like the name Skidster even better than Bobcat. In fact I think we should start calling really cool people skidsters!

The Royals are beautiful. Seems like lots of good suggestions here. I have nothing to add.

I am having a mostly good and busy week. I have to say that I mostly really enjoy my job... but sometimes people are silly. Just that.

At 21:19 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Welcome new people! And many thanks for the advice. I am doing research, and talked to long time EG Bengal owner, Adri for a long time tonight.

I don't think he is sick. I think he may be more comfortable around me, and his home now, and is making up for lost time.

Everyone ate the hamburgher/fancy feast tonight. Venus and Mim and Magic were suspicious, but Lear and Mab loved it. I was able to get a small serving to Mab and she picked out the burger bits.

I am going to try the Evo, mixing it in with the current brand, and I like the re-direct to play idea.

I way don't react to Lear, I can only imagine the pattern if I started getting up to feed him when he did that!

Danguy, you need a skidster. Really. The world be a different place if Danguy had a skidter.

Hi Malena, been a while! I don't know how fast it goes, once you are driving it for the first time, speed isn't what you are after, slow is enough!

Next time we are all gathering, we'll rent one, just for some fun, yes?

Hehe, I used to work for Caterpillar, and I would often go out to the equipment yard and play with the little skid steers and mini excavators. Fun and cute! :D

I'm with Pink--a low residue food sounds in order. The Fancy Feast may well not be getting properly digested, and has to push out somewhere/somehow. It's really nasty when what they regurgitate looks like it could have come out the other end.... That was one of the signs the vet told us to watch out for, regarding Angus' chow.

They get Avoderm for dry food, and Limited Ingredient Diet (there are several brands) for canned....

But the raw meat supplement has made ALL the difference. Angus does a lot less "comfort eating" since we started with the meat.

Bought frozen from a Natural Meats store in Albuquerque, I give him about an oz or so a day. It is a blend of Beef and Turkey, with innards (like Turkey heart, for example) ground up/shredded up with it. I wouldn't purchase this kind of stuff from any place where I didn't SERIOUSLY trust the butchers.

We don't add any more taurine and the like, because he seems to get enough of those from the other commercial foods.

My mom pointed out (I read her your post! :) ) that Angus used to hassle her by begging when she took her vitamins and supplements---he stopped about a week after we started him on the raw meat and now only does it if I run out and it's a few days before I can drive up to ABQ. Odd little fellow. And before the rest of you ask, NO she doesn't share her Devil's Claw and the like with him! :) (too expensive, for one thing)

Okay, back to homework. This studenty thing is kinda fun! Friday we are being FORCED to watch Forbidden Planet. sigh.

I don't have anything to add to the Bengal advice but hope it works out. Wonderful to see Lear & Mab out and letting you take their pictures, rather than hiding in a closet.

At 01:37 Blogger Na said...

Yeeeha!

For the skidster driving, that is.

Critters! Sounds like Lear is missing something from his diet, some crucial wee ingredient that nothing else makes up for.

Also, considering his size, I flashed on a memory of watching a lion at the Austin Zoo go after what looked like an entire side of beef...

I have no advice for Bengals and I think I should stay away from operating heavy machinery right now. Once I get some sleep though, that Bobcat looks like a fun ride. *grin*

Joy to behold! \o/ Now: dig a big tunnel from your house to Boss's. It'll make the winter commute easier.

It is great to hear that Lear and Mab have settle in so well, and are happy cats.

I'm interested in the low-residue food idea. I wonder if it'd help my cat. She started puking up her food this morning; she's got a delicate stomach and it happens once in a while. Usually goes away after a day or so, and is often hairball related. (She's on antibiotics right now, too, so it could be partly that.) But it can't be comfortable. Maybe the food I've been giving her is hard on her stomach. Hmm.

At 10:42 Blogger libwitch said...

Could you try mixing in stage 1 baby food, either chicken or turkey? Its cheap, and if you look at whats in it, its just meat and well, gravy.

I know when my ferrets are sick (and they are built to be meat-eaters after all), we feed them a "duck soup mix" which is made with:

either high quality canned (feline td) or dry cat food (if its dry, add enough water and crush until its mush).

baby food

ferretvite (its a supplement).

Its high cal, high protein. And they love it. But the baby food is popular and high protein and a hit when mixed in with regular food, too.

Morning!

Lear has started to PURR!!!!!

He has never done this since I have had him! It's LOUD.

This makes my heart very happy.

No one liked the ground beef fancy feast really this morning, tho everyone but Venus ate it. Will try chicken tonight. I mean, it's a bird, that's what they like being cats. DOn't tell the Birdchick I said that.

At 11:23 Blogger Lioness said...

You look HAPPY in the Bobcat! Heavy Equipment Therapy. Might be an idea whose time has come.

I am interested in all the info about adding meat to their diets. Our Binky is a bit fat, so I might go with some of the Fiendish advice.

Good luck with Lear's food. He doesn't look overweight to me in the photo. And how cool is it that he purred? Well, very cool, akcherly.

At 15:32 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

No, Lear isn't fat, in fact, he is kind of thin, thinner than when he came, and he wasn't overweight...

We'll see what getting meat does. He ATE his breakfast today, like a cat does, not inhaled it in 20 seconds like a starving demon.

Cleaning out the office, Fod help me, looks like somebody shook the thing. I may be making non-progress (Congress?)

At 15:34 Blogger Hera said...

Helloo! yes bobcat looks like lots of fun! I drove a forklift once and almost dropped a big crate of onions ;)

I've forwarded the question to a vet-nurse friend of mine and hopefully will be able to send back something useful.. they are just so much more than housecats..

Brjánn won't eat human food.. just not interested.. even mince (but he loves the fancy feast..) he once ate some nice blue cheese with me but that's it..
*actually, last week he ate his food a bit fast, and vomited in the perfect shape of a heart! I took a photo.. it was widely pixted around.. *he must be happy since he's vomiting love!

And...expanding the little family and getting another sphynx! a little girl to keep him company.. (I feel guilty when he's home alone, will be nice to snuggle up with someone and I was told sphynxes get along well with other sphynxes.. so fingers crossed...) She will be here in november/december!

Wow this is getting long.. I think last here time I was talking about the video? it's up and online on youtube now, for anyone interested it's 'the devil and me' and slightly evil ;)

Much love to you and hope I can update with something useful ;) xoxoHera

At 15:40 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Hi Hera! That's wonderful news on the new Kitty! If I didn't have Bengals, I might well have Sphynxx . You and I really DO win the freakiest pet contest I am thinking!

Good luck on your show today too...

And uh, thanks for sharing the vomit in the shape of a heart story. I don't THINK we've heard that one before...

hehehe.. ok this is NOT on twitter, only posting this here (and do not go to this link unless you really want to see heart shaped vomit) http://twitpic.com/h8a8r
(still sort of looks like catfood)

I have been told Brjann is a bit podgy.. his belly is a little bit wobbly these days, so instead of leaving food out for him always, I have to start measuring now.. *will also be better when new kitty gets here and they'll have different foods while she's a kitten..

ah the wonderful joys of cats :) xoxox

No matter what, he will find the barf with his sock-clad feet, even if the Minion and I have walked through that area several times already.

Gotta be magic - wonder if there's a market for it.

(And no, he won't clean it up. Instead he hops around on one foot, cursing and complaining. The cats are completely unimpressed.)

Is it wrong that I'm glad my cats do most of their puking outside?

Oh and what Indy said about head butting! I didn't realise that was a dominance thing! I thought that was just affection and so I started doing it to them and now they don't do it to me anymore and I was real sad but they probably figured I was asserting my bos-ness. LOL!

When moving my cats from a dry to all wet diet I used these sites for reference:
http://www.catnutrition.org/index.php
http://catinfo.org/index.htm (also, at this link, best advice ever? Rubbermaid boxes as cat litter boxes. Finally my big boys had enough room!)

Some people also supplement with raw meaty bones or raw chicken bones for cats who like to gnaw on something. No cooked bones for cats!

We haven't gone raw yet. All three of my fat cats dropped a pound or so and are much healthier and happier. We do give them a little Friskies treat now and then, added to their regular food. They get kind of stupid for it.
