Honey Harvest....

It should be first noted that all pictures in tonights post were taken by own very own dear Cat Mihos, who Bee'd with the best of us today!

This is my favorite shot, we called it "Madonna with Bees" I think it will BEE my favorite shot of me for a long time.

Today was the Honey Harvest! That's where we go and take all the honey the bees don't need for the winter. Many times, you don't get much honey from first year hives, but we got quite a bit. More on that when we get to the Extractor Blog this weekend. I've got cheesecloths and buckets all over the kitchen.

The Bees were cold, out of their nice warm hives, and so tended to huddle, and look for warm places. Above, you can see Boss, with the makings of a fine Bee Hat and Cape going on.

The Green Hive was an ANGRY hive, not at all happy with us for going in, and well, stealing honey. I can see their point really. That's Boss there, covered in Bees! He wears a half Bee Suit, as it is easier to work in and more comfortable, and he is really comfortable working with bees.

It was at this point that Woodsman Hans got stung five times, and The Birdchick once. I missed it, having nipped up to the house for another feeder bucket. I returned to cries of "Suit up! Suit up! Angry Hive! Warning"

They weren't kidding. I have a huge hole in my beesuit, too and my pants were falling down inside the suit, and I had no shirt on as it gets hot in beesuits and well, that's a story for another time. Duct tape is your friend in so many ways.

It is at this point you start to think "I think the Bees are beginning to Suspect Something..."

Funky Comb! That's what we call it when the bees make comb in their own artistic way, and not nicely on the frames as they are meant to.

As I said, Kitty took all the photos on tonights blog. Even this one. She is very, very good. Having her out this week was such a very good idea, the both of us tag teaming assistantting is working beautifully. It's pretty hectic with China only a few days away, but we are making it work. And it makes me happy that she is here. We are going to shoot Bengals, still and video both, on Saturday.

Of course there is a Bat Hive. You thought there wouldn't be? (Thanks to Woodsman Hans, who knew we needed one)

And for those of you who missed it on Twitter, a little video of Boss shaking the bees off a frame we are stealing. It's pretty cool, they all sort of fall off. Bees are cool.

Love and Bees,
Lorraine

FIRST.

I have nothing to say - 10% across-the-board budget cuts at work. Not good. Life goes on. Honey Lives.

Night, Fiendom.

OK, I guess I just have to say it now....

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK! I don't know how you all do it. I can't even look at a bee without getting the shivers. Maybe I'd feel differently if I were wearing all that protective clothing...(do you think people would look at me weird if I were sitting in the park reading a book wearing beekeeper garb?)

But rock on with your bad, brave selves. SOMEONE'S gotta get in there and get the honey! I'm just glad it isn't me! :)

At 21:54 Anonymous Kate said...

"Something tells me that they're suspicious!"

"Perhaps they think that you're after their honey."

"It may be that. You never can tell with bees."

What an exciting day, bees, China plans, and all. RIP tea kettle bee.

Oh, Siri! Sucks big time. Hope things improve soonest.

Love the bee-ing pics. I think I'm glad to look at them online - can't decide if I'd like to watch the work in person. I like bees. I saw a new kind recently - a golden huge bumblebee - no stripes.

I guess if I wanted to see some live bee action I could call the priest at the Romanian Orthodox church down the street. They have dozens of hives right next to the church (on a busy street.)

Hand hurts. Obviously I have been working too hard! I think that's my cue to head off to bed with my faithful wrist brace. Good night all.

I'm with you Fluffy - love watching online, although I would watch at a safe distance. Maybe.

oh honey bees all,

Siri, take this chance to reflect. it could be great?

Q is quick like bunny.. whatta day!
yes Quiche went and left me with bees in the house and a hungry boss bear and a final touch, one of the lost bees, cold and shivery, landed on the hot hot halogen chandelier fixture, so Sharon Birdchick and I climbed up to photograph her last dying ember. i will post that sad RIP.
Merry Housekeeper, should you be reading this, worry not, we put down newspaper and it isn't as bad as Quiche reports. Quiche is quite quick with the extraction end of things, I will confirmation, quickdraw McGraw.
But really Q i think you should come back and get me.

I keep meaning to mention: I finished Good Fairies of New York last weekend. Wonderful stuff!

At 08:02 Blogger EmilyLady said...

I'll watch the video a bit later - when I have more time - but "Madonna With Bees!" That just about made my day.

At 08:03 Blogger Spy Scribbler said...

That is the coolest! I'm totally fascinated by this bee talk. How much honey do you guys make? And how do you make honey from honeycomb? And what do you do with the honey you make?

At 08:29 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Morning!

My inbox looks like a war zone. More tea is clearly needed.

Danguy, cool on Good Fairies of NY, Martin Millar is good. Really, really good.

He's finished a 2nd Lonely Werewolf Girl book, I hear. It would be far too early to comment on if he had let anyone read this yet, and what they thought, but if anyone had read it, I think they might say: OH MY YES!

Just thinking...

Hi Natasha, welcome! I am going to do a whole blog on the extracting soon, (soon as I have TIME) but we do both comb and extracted honey, and as to what we do with it, we eat it!

Jess, I fear this dirge, but will read it anyway. Was thinking I needed to write a song for this TeaKettle Bee. Ought to be remembered, poor dear.

OSS, Marquis is always just right, isn't he? I keep meaning to do some Mehitabel at some point.

Bees are really zen. Very calming. Not scary. Well, mostly not scary, but a little trail by fire never hurt anyone, now did it?

At 08:37 Blogger Jess said...

Don't fear the dirge. It's really lovely, actually. :)

Good morning, lovely people. I love the bee posts....and two new posts in two busy days!

Today's task around here is... take all the books off four medium bookcases and discover where the evil mustiness begins. Dust them, sort out the ones un-salvageable, and return to shelves. Perhaps it will turn out to be one of those more dreadful in prospect tasks?

At 08:58 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Hmm...Bee Dirge does seem to require sign up...Any other way to see this, Jess?

At 09:18 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Wonderful post and wonderful pics, Q and Kitty! I can see how all the awesomeness of you two in one place really makes the work go better :-)

I'm not sure if the sound the bees make would make me more nervous or less. I do know I wish I could help with the extraction, and be surrounded by that scent. Or maybe it gets cloying after a while?

Siri, sorry to hear about the cuts. I've missed your voice while I've been more away from the blog than not. Got to get that home internet connection thing solved!

Fluffy, how cool! Does the neighborhood complain at all?

Okay, to work now. Best of mornings/afternoons to all!

Sorry. imeem wasn't demanding signups the first time I listened to it. Should have checked.

I am not sure I would be bothered by beeing. Bees are fuzzy and make cute noises. Florida has yellowjackets, which can sting repeatedly. They can also bite. And, I've seen them EAT MEAT!!!! Oh, and sometimes they make their nests in the ground, so if you step on them you'll be covered in angry yellowjackets biting and stinging you, and you know if they're biting they're probably actually EATING YOUR FLESH!!!

Siri: I'm sorry. :( I hope things start looking up!

My friend, who I bought 'Blueberry Girl' for when her baby girl was christened a few months ago, told me today she's just bought lots of copies of it to give as gifts to all her friends with baby girls -that made me really happy! A whole new generation of Boss fans :o)

Hi, Natasha! Thou are now a Fiend! Look around, I'm sure you'll find a beeautiful white, buckled jacket just for you. Look around a little more for supplies to use to personalize your jacket. All Fiends love their jackets. :)

My mandatory government computer security training requires: 1. Internet Explorer; 2. Enabling JavaScript; 3. Allowing popups.

Security???

So I can't do it at work, because I need Linux to get my job done, so my computer is far too secure to do the security training.

Instead, I'm doing it at home on Friday night. But I can drink while I'm doing it! This is a vast improvement.

Have fun at the gig - wish I could be there!

At 17:57 Blogger Siri said...

Vampi - Love love love reading rainbow.

Thanks to all for the kind thoughts. Don't know anything yet about what will happen to staff in the agency - sure to impact us. Unfortunately/fortunately I have 30 years in, so won't be cut. Therefore, not such a good thing for me - I'll be one of the survivors, unless I take early retirement (I'm too young for that) and find something else.

It is just wearying to have to deal with the constant unknowns and emotions. Again. This is at least the 3rd time I've been through this. Danged economy.

At 18:01 Blogger Phiala said...

Siri, definitely sucks. My sympathies.

We went thru this last year - the entire lab was slated to be closed down. But we got lots of support before Congress, and got reinstated. Very nervewracking.

But then, if we were shut down, I wouldn't be doing this horrible computer security training...

I always have conflicting thoughts about when you do a bee blog. It's 'whooooah, COOL' and the Eddie Izzard Bee bit. At the same time. Huzzah for successful harvest!

Oh, and I saw RENT, and afterwards trying to talk to Adam Pascal, but he was talking to a friend of his, so I turn to the PR lady and go, "So, how'd you get into this? I think PR and PA stuff is cool. I follow Fabu... Lorraine, Neil Gaiman's assistant on Twitter."

She nodded at me, but I think she thought I was weird. Oh well. *shrug* Thought that might be cool to share. :}

I did at least get a trip to the farmers market squeezed into the morning. Mmmmm, apples and kale and squash, oh my!

Snow. Everything hurts. Head in a fog. Like some sort of bad hangover but I don't drink anymore.

This does not seem fair.

Must wake Kitty and see what she says about this!

She got some great video of Lear last night after we got home! Just cooked steak and we are going to shoot some more!!

At 10:47 Blogger Phiala said...

Q, that's no good. :(

I hope you feel better quickly and the snow melts immediately.

I am engaged in trying to organize too many things in too small a space. It isn't working very well.

At 10:57 Blogger Siri said...

Snow down here, too, Q - could be barometric pressure that makes you feel blech - or baseball - one of the two!

I'm hoping for 1", so we can break the record for earliest snow - if it has to be, might as well get a record for it.

Blinds in the living room down in preparation for the new patio door installation on Wednesday. Grandmother's chest fixed (wonkey leg for years and years - not what I planned for a Friday ngiht, but you go where the path leads you. Laundry today, and then rest and reading. Woo. Already walked and had breakfast. All before 11. Whoop.

At 11:03 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Kitty is awake and I brought steak up to her bed. Lear ate ON the bed from our hands! Got GREAT video!

I'll feel fine, it's just Rock, you hurt when you wake, but it goes away. All musicians hurt, brutal job.

Worth it tho. Tonight is going to be amazing!

At 12:00 Blogger dabbler said...

Wow. So not ready for snow. We still have mostly green leaves, and are hoping to delay turning on the furnace as long a possible. Woodstove for evenings, but not airtight, so doesn't work over night.

Phiala, most of what I do (repeatedly, or recursively, or eternally) in my house is try to organize too many things into too little space. Best of luck!

Just spent an hour with DH, going through the piles and piles of shirts that accumulate in front of the radiator all summer, to a repeated refrain of "Oh, I was WONDERING where that shirt had gotten to." Because we all know that clothes move themselves around when we aren't watching, right? And we all need 60+ T-shirts, right? But we also waxed the runners on his dresser, so the drawers move easily, and perhaps now some shirts will live in drawers, right?

So much easier to clean up some one else's stuff.

At 12:01 Blogger dabbler said...
