My Illicet Affair....

The first thing I need to make clear in this Horsie Post is that, yes, as some of you have commented, Illicit Affair IS thin and not looking his best. He was injured some months ago, and only recently acquired by HorseTrainer Mel.

His back was hurt, but he is getting the best care from not only Mel, but Vet and Horse Chiropractor (Who knew?) and he is expected to make a full recovery. He gets lots of arena work on the floor, but no one is currently riding him.

Horsetrainer Mel (@melhorsetrainer on Twitter) has been my friend for a LOT of years. I've gone in and out of riding, and followed her from Stable to Stable, finally ending up with her at her current place, which I must say is the BEST ever. I love the people there. No Snoots, which, as anyone who has been around show horses know, is a hazard of the trade. At this Stable, there is no attitude, if you are kind and love horses, you're in.

Mel is one of the people in this world who has found out EXACTLY what she is meant to be doing, and is doing it. Like Boss with writing, or AFP with music. There simply isn't any other option. She's that good, REALLY that good and the horses she owns, and the ones she trains kind of won the Horsie Lottery.

I should mention too, that I don't own my horses, they are all hers. They come to her. People give them to her, so they will have a good home and care. I pay a lease fee monthly, and ride whomever Mel feels I am ready for. She has taught me everything I know. I've wanted to ride since I knew there were horses, and never had a chance before I met her.

I've been thru a few horses now, with her, especially this past year. I've been fond of them, I love riding, being around horses, stables, and the people, but I always had this nagging feeling that I wasn't connected with them. The horses, not the people. I didn't LOVE them or feel the passion that horses people feel for their special horses. Always sort of had the thought that they were nice, but they sure as heck weren't BENGALS, and didn't have that same depth of feeling or communication.

Until I met this guy.

First horse I have LOVED. No idea why, start a few weeks ago. Noticed him right away. He noticed me. He comes right up to me when I go to the pasture for Anna Montana, my current horse. He tells me things. Not kidding. About how he is feeling. What's going on. That he is really happy to see me. I don't know if it is HIM and he is like that with everyone or not, but it got my heart. HE got into my heart. There's a spirit to him I haven't felt before.

His call name is, sadly, Spot. I've already told Mel that NEEDS to be changed, and she needs to pick out something better. I can't be in love with a horse called SPOT. It's NOT him. Like Bengal Luka, (Formerly Lear) wrong name.

He can't be rode yet, and certainly when he can be rode, it will need to be with someone a lot better than me, (and lighter, talk about diet INCENTIVE) to start with.

Doesn't change anything.

The heart knows. And I sure do love this horse.

Love and Horses,
Lorraine

And, now, unfortunately, sadder stuff. The local SPCA and a no kill shelter groups called PALS (www.palspets.org) just took 115 cats, mainly purebred, from a woman about two miles from me. See the story here:

http://www.philly.com/dailynews/local/20091112_115_cats__2_dogs_seized_in_Montco.html

Don't know if there were any Bengals, but I will find out.

I know exactly what you mean. There's just a connection. The exact thing happened to me. I had to wait, too, because my horse had been mistreated (he was a rescue). He needed a lot of work and care (the poor thing didn't even know what a carrot was). By the time I got to ride him, we were quite bonded, and he'd do anything for me.

Thanks for sharing, Lorraine! :-)

He is a pretty boy, love his ears! And I bet you're the only one he comes over to and talks to, because he knows you're a good listener when it comes to animals, especially those who have had challenges in their past.

Can't wait to see him blossom!

Love in all ways, wonderful to hear about it.

At 12:05 Blogger Precision Grace said...

That's wonderful! I'm personally very weary of horses but they are so sociable and always want to come over and talk when i pass by (lots of paddocks around where I live). I met some horses recently when their owner was exercising them and the big mare just took shine to me and every time I pass she comes over and wants to talk but I'm never sure I know what she is saying. She always strikes me as a bit upset with everything. This last time I actually offered her my hand to sniff (usually I keep my distance) and she huffed into it but didn't seem interested in letting me pet her. Don't really understand horse language but what interaction I've had, they strike me incredibly people like.

Yay for people who care about horses and all animals and specially your friend who found her true calling and Q finding her special friend.

Happy to hear you have found your horsie-soulmate, Q. And it sounds as though he has finally found the right place to be, too. All horses need someone like Mel (and cats need someone like you)

I hope he continues to improve and thet you and he enjoy getting to know each other better.

It's been a wild a stormy day here - lots of trees losing branches, and it's been far to wet and wild to go out (except for brief time this morning, to walk down to the Dr to get my piggy & 'normal' flu jabs.)

going to see JoCo & Paul & Storm tomorrow eveinf - getting very excited about it now.

Love the picture of Mel with the horse.

Awww, the poor kitties, Dabbler!

He's so lovely, and very lucky to be there. I've loved horses since I was very young, even rode before I was born (via my mother riding while pregnant, lol). Even with all the horses I've met, ridden, trained, healed and loved, very few have completely captured my heart. Its a breathtaking thing, so I totally get how you're feeling about IA, and it warms my heart to hear about it.

The barn sounds lovely. I know what you mean about people being snotty & whatnot.

I was thinking that the call name Iago might be interesting, since it combines the first two initials of his name. Of course, he was a deceptive bugger, but also a good soldier - two sides to every coin.

Well, keep us posted as to his recovery and name.

Cheers,
Renee

You have an incredible connection with animals. I am continually amazed by it. Looks like he may be your Horsie-Magic!

There's a state park/ranch here where you can hike, bike, etc but it's still a functioning farm and ranch and has the old farm-house and everything (recently restored). They have HUGE draft horses that are gorgeous, majestic creatures. If you ever come this way, Lorraine, we'll have to go say Hi to them.

Hung out with Amacker at the radio station yesterday and she interviewed me about FoodPorn on-air. It was so fun! Almost forgot people were listening, we were just chatting w/ mics in our faces. We have so many overlapping circles of friends! It's crazy. She said she'll get that zip line installed ;-)
We'll probably do another interview before Christmas to talk Christmas-Foodporn.

I guess I should head toward the shower at some point...lazy saturday. I made frittata and told ben it was almost ready and he said, "Not frittata! It's not sunday!!" Heh...can't go to food church on saturday?

Horses, like cats, choose you. At least when they are left free to do so. I am convinced of this. Good fortune to IA (Ianto, maybe? For us Torchwooders?) in his healing and all around future.

Chantrelle--slap me! I TOTALLY meant to ask you to pass on Holas to my evol twin. Yesterday became a "school is my world, and my world is school" day. Required gin upon coming home. Then sleep.
So....no note to you. Darn.

That said, glad you had such a good *and* productive time (one of her superpowers--making productive time seriously entertaining) and btw how about you try to get a transcript and post it on FoodPorn for the rest of us?

At 12:44 Blogger Chantrelle said...

I just emailed Amacker this morning asking if it's ok if i post a transcript on foodporn (it should be but i wanted to make sure)

At 12:54 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Thanks all! IA is a pretty special horse, I do love him. It has kind of opened up a whole new thing for me. Very different.

Mel is the best. I am pretty darn lucky.

Dabbler, that is very sad, that someone with the best intentions ended up so badly.

Chantrelle, glad you and Amacker had fun, but I am not CONVINCED what Boss needs in his life is a zip line.

At 12:56 Blogger Chantrelle said...

LOL! I'm not convinced she'll ever actually get it installed! She's mentioned it almost every time I've seen her the last few years.

I got jokingly razzed for my lack of content on my Lebanese section of foodporn. Anyone have any recipes I could try out for that page? http://www.foodporn.com/lebanese/
I'm a famous radio-star now, i need content ;-)

At 12:59 Blogger Jess said...

What a sweet face he has. Not Spot is a lovely horse! And everyone knows what a lovely horse calls for. ;)

Hee hee, Chantrelle! Food church.

Had one of them thar Tiny Readings last night. It was a good one--great group, really friendly atomsphere. Mercifully, and for the first time, ever, no one shouted at me to speak up while I was in mid-sentence. Mr. Jess also came to listen for the first time, which made me nervous but happy. He gestured for me to speak up a few times, but he didn't yell. So that's all right. He also smiled a lot while I was up there, which made the whole night worth it.

Happy Saturday!

Nothing to do with horses, sorry.

Phiala, is this to be a bigger version of the medieval dinner thing?

At 16:14 Blogger Phiala said...

Jess, the medieval dinner thing was test-cooking a few of the recipes on a small scale. The real thing is food for a weekend, Friday dinner thru Sunday breakfast, with 110 planned for lunch on Saturday and a full medieval dinner for 70 on Saturday evening.

You see why I'm freaking out a bit about it, right???

At 16:16 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Phew, I feel exhausted just thinking about that Phiala.

At 16:18 Blogger Phiala said...

You and me both, Sally!

This is the seventh time we've run this weekend thingie. Usually, there are 3 people in charge:
Class coordinator: me
Reservations and site supervision: someone else
Head cook: someone else.

I can do jobs 1 and 2 simultaneously, though it's a lot of work. This year I'm stuck doing jobs 1 and 3, which is insane. And yet... it was that, or cancel the whole thing.

At 16:33 Blogger Jess said...

If it were closer, I'd definitely be there. It's really just the 3 hours from home thing. And the part where I'm incredibly focused on this weekend and haven't made any plans beyond that.

At 18:57 Blogger dabbler said...

Love that last picture with the big soft brown eye....

Phiala, you so need help. Can you at least shanghai lots of sous-chefs, and provisioners, so you don't have to do all the shopping and schlepping? When does this go down? I'm figuring you're stuck with the two jobs because you are good at them, always dangerous in a volunteer organization. Perhaps dramatic waving of Nick's elegant cutlery might help convince other to assist? Of course, it won't work for the armored ones.

At 19:03 Blogger rayvyn2k said...

He is gorgeous! Does he have Arabian in his genes?

So very jealous! I wish there was a place around here where I could ride.

Thanks for the pics.

At 19:08 Blogger Phiala said...

Dabbler, I have some help, hopefully enough. No provisioners - I'm doing all the planning and shopping. I should have prep help on Thursday and Friday, a couple people on Saturday, and some dishwashers Saturday evening.

I planned a simple menu (no really!). It can't be that simple if you need to make 70-100 people happy. And quite a bit can be done ahead of time.

Still.

Lorraine I totally understand what you are saying. I have owned three horses, and been around them since I could barely walk, my first ride was at 2 or 3 I think.

Sometime I will blog about my horse phase and why it came to an end and about my show Highland pony.. I loved him dearly.

My sister breeds horses and had 2 foals this year.. so I love your stories and hers.

Cairo comes to mind. I don't know why.

Oh Shantra. I feel like that's his name. As soon as I read that it clicked.

At 20:38 Blogger Na said...

Phiala, I think I have you to thank for a used-bookstore win: George Macdonald's The Princess and the Goblin, with illos by James Allen. I came across a copy, the title/author rang a fiendish bell, I brought it home, and ohmyfodsit'swonderful! My dragonette loves it, too.

At 21:04 Blogger Phiala said...

Hooray, Na! I think MacDonald is sadly neglected, and I'm so glad both of you are enjoying it. There's a sequel, but it's been so long since I read it that I honestly can't tell you if it is as good.

At 21:53 Blogger Phiala said...

Also unrelated to horses... I saw a most excellent t-shirt today. It said:

At 22:09 Blogger Na said...

Oops - illos by Alan Parry (not James Allen - who's that?). Just read three more chapters, both kids listening now. Yay! Whether the other book (just googled; The Princess and Curdie ?) is as good, seems worth seeking out more of his stories, to be sure. Yay!

I tried reading a version of Robin Hood earlier this week to the kids, but had to explain/translate too much. Maybe in a few more years.

I liked "Cairo," too, for Not Spot: an Illicit Affair in Cairo. Hee.

Happy weekending, all!

At 07:07 Blogger dabbler said...

NA, 'The Princess and Curdie' is also wonderful. We also loved 'The Light Princess' and 'At the Back of the North Wind' Though the North Wind begins and ends in a very sad-to-modern-eyes Victorian place, as I recall, so it may depend on your comfort level with that.

And, I just read Boss's recent blog including some quotes from a Kenneth Grahame work I didn't know at all, and will have to wait to find until the popularity inspired by Boss's readers dies down, no doubt.

How old are your dragonet/tes?

At 08:09 Blogger Siri said...

Anything by George MacDonald is special. The Kenneth Grahame books are available - I got them in the last few years - try Bas Bleu website - I think that's where I got a very nice edition of both The Golden Age and Dream Days.

Sometimes I'm amazed at what books I already know about, here in the middle of the country. How did they find their way here?

At 12:57 Blogger Kitty Cat said...

why do horses scare me?
was i once killed by one, or something?
or was a mean horse owner, afraid of payback?
i'd sure hate to think that.
thank goodness you love horses so much Q, maybe you will burn my horse karma for me.

At 13:01 Blogger Chantrelle said...

Aren't fears a strange thing. Why do clowns scare the holy living crap out of me. I mean I seriously freak. Even just a picture. Hubby will say "Don't look left" so as to avoid me screaming...Ben will say "heyyy mommmm, look at thiiiissss!" And show me a picture of a clown, evil child.

Wherever these fears come from, they can be very deep seated. I also don't like going underwater. I must have been drowned by a clown.

At 13:17 Blogger EmilyLady said...

Now that we've begun this discussion, I had repetitive nightmares as a child of being completely unable to draw breath in small wooden spaces. Buried alive? (And face-down, I take it, since the pressure on my lungs always came from behind.)

At 13:19 Blogger Chantrelle said...

Freaky Emily!

I had a dream last night that Angelina Jolie is really an alien. All her facial features are just fake constructions to pass as human. Her nose is really in her hip. Only Brad Pitt knows the truth.

At 14:01 Blogger Na said...

Thanks for more Geo. Macdonald and Kenneth Graham titles, gals. More to keep in mind while seeking book treasures. :D

dabbler, my little'ns are nearly 5 and nearly 9. I begin to think Macdonald might be a little past attention span of the nearly 5, but she keeps asking me to read it to her, so I do.

Chantrelle, my nearly-9 beastie boy does something similar to me, gleefully pointing out pics or toys or, in the museum's Bug Room, live cockroaches. Gaaah.

My recurring nightmare features poltergeists.

Hmmm. Think I saw Creepshow and Poltergeist as a youngster? gaaaaaa!

Lazy, chilly, gloomy Sunday here. Another 5-6 weeks of shortening days and lowering sun. And since last winter, I've seen Let the Right One In and 30 Days of Night - gaaaaaa!

Okay, out into the thin winter light for a bit.

At 17:35 Anonymous kali_licious said...

Oh he's so pretty! He's gonna be a knockout once he puts some pounds on. But he shouldn't be called Spot...Cairo sounds good, as long as it isn't "KAY-ro." Don't know what it is here in the midwest that makes us take perfectly good place names and totally mispronounce them. (My personal favorite is Peru, Indiana, which the locals pronounce as "PEE-roo.")

Phiala: I'd be freaking out too if I had to cook for that many! Too bad I live so far away, I'd volunteer for kitchen prep slave since I used to help a friend cater.

Robyn: Fattoush? Tabbouleh? Falafel? I would say Shawarma too, but it's a meat dish.

Crowds and heights are the worst for me. Both of those situations make me hyperventilate and panic. I'm scared of spiders too, but not the kind of abject panic that heights and crowds does to me.

At 17:53 Blogger gaypet said...

Best mispronunciation around here:

New Prague = "New Pray-g"

I was going to say something about fears or recurring nightmares but I am writing an annotated bibliography and that is frightening enough!! Wish me luck. If I ever get this paper written I will finally have finished my BA.

from a really young age (like 2 or 3) I had a recurring nightmare of a disembodied hand, dripping blood and goo coming down some stairs to get me. The thing is, as a child we never ever watched any television which would have contained anything like that, so where did I get the idea?

Sally, your nightmare sounds like the early '80's horror movie "The Hand" starring Michael Caine. Spooky!

I don't have recurring dreams per se, but I tend to have the "someone-is-chasing-me-and-trying-to-kill-me" dreams when I get really stressed out. When I was younger it was always nightmares about falling.

At 00:19 Blogger Dragonsally said...
