Bits and Pieces of Nothing in Particular....

Well, I don't want to do an entire post about how I feel THIS time of the month, but I don't have much to say tonight.

But, again, I did PROMISE you a new post, and ought to get to it and find something interesting to say. Still feel worn out, and not at caught up on sleep and food. Nothing is coming.

I could ask you some interesting questions, like why doesn't my TiVo record the new episodes of SVU, only the old ones, which having just got a note from Kitty talking about how great the last one was, is making me somewhat grumpy.

Or how one STOPS a series recording. Apparently, if you start recording something, you are there for all time.

I miss my horsie. He misses me too. I can tell. I am darn near ready to get Mel Horsetrainer to nip on out to him and put him on the phone. I'll see him Sunday, but I've gigs this weekend, (Hey come down! We will rock you...)and I don't like to ride if I have a show. Horses are way more work than you think. But I really miss that horse.

My biggest serious goal now is to lose as much weight as I can, so I don't hurt his back. Mel would never let that happen, but he doesn't need to carry any more, if you see what I mean. Great inspiration, love is.

Got the house back in order. How does it get such a mess when all I have been doing is lying in bed? There's a question that needs answering.

All Bengals are well. There has been a Cat Bed War going on with Venus and Mim. Mim had her nice bed, Venus had the couch. Until Venus decided she would show Mim. Then Venus got the bed on the dinning room table. (Isn't that where everyone has them?)

SO, (why am I telling you this????) I got Mim another, for the other end of the table. Yeah, Venus decided THAT was way cooler, so I got another for the top of the Halloween Town Shelf. Now Venus serially sleeps in all of them, and Mim prowls the Basement.

If I ever understand Bengals, I will truly be wise.

Love and Sleep,
Lorraine

Hey! Glad you're feeling better. That cat thing - who the hell knows what they want?

So far as the New episodes of SVU, click on the recording options (Tivo Menu -> Find Programs -> Season Passes) and make sure you've checked "First Run And Repeats" (or "First Run Only" if you ONLY want the new ones).

If that doesn't work, I'd delete the season pass (same place, different option), and get a new one by going to the channel on which the new episodes appear, and selecting the season pass from there.

Good luck.

I just wanted to say we appreciate your efforts. We really do!

And I'm sure Venus and Mim appreciate your efforts in providing them with all those bedding options. They're just showing it in a particularly Bengal-y way.

As for me, I'm finding that some days are just a bit more of a slog than others. Maybe it's because I overdid it at the office Christmas lunch (yes, already), and maybe it's because everyone else has skived off. :) Anyway...

Oh...and here's hoping you get some time with your horsie soon Lorraine.

Hmm. Reminds me of humans, come to think of it.

Why, good evening, Q. Nice to see you, to see you nice. We missed you.

I cannot answer Tivo questions. I live in a sort of perpetual year 1999: There is a PC, and internets, And even occasional episodes of Law & Order, but no or Tivo. There is a Creative Zen player, but we only use it in the car. So that bit of life is more like the present, I suppose. But the rest is, like, last century.

Nor can I say why houses get messy even when you're not doing anything in them. I think houses just do that. Even my nice young men in uniform from this morning couldn't fix it, so you are well ahead and doing fine, actually.

Cat beds everywhere sounds familiar. We're rolling in cat beds. And then they sit all over the furniture anyway, There's no place which isn't a cat bed.

I'm curious to know how horsie would respond to being on the phone, actually. :)

Should not have had two cups of coffee this evening. I've fallen off the wagon and will never get to sleep. Buzz buzz buzz.

At 21:56 Anonymous lisana said...

I can answer the Season Pass question for you.

1. Go to Tivo Central (press the TiVo button),
2. Select "Find Programs" from the list
3. Select "Season Pass Manager" from the next page

4. There will be your list of programs you've set season passes for, in their priority order. Scroll down until you see the one(s) you want to remove, press Select

5. Choose "Cancel this Season Pass"

and you're done!

Thanks for the TiVo help. It's actually a Charter DVR, not a Tivo brand, I call it that. And the old one I had from Charter had all that and worked fine, but I can't for the life of me find the Season Pas options for recording, deleting, ect...

May have to search the website...Ack!

Yep, you can add me to the Luddite crew. No cellphone. No computer at home (although I desperately want one - obviously not desperately enough!). No DVD doohickey. Not even a VCR.

And no, it's not down any deeply held philosophical beliefs. I just haven't wanted them enough to get them. Go figure.

How do you watch your shows with no DVR? They are on all times, and my phone rings all time. Need that pause option!

No, not twins or even related. Venus was from an icky breeder, since closed down, and Mim from a lovely one who still writes to me...

Very exciting Top Chef!!!

At 22:38 Blogger ariandalen said...

Sorry I can't help you with your Charter DVR, Ms. Fabulous. We have a TiVo, though not one with HD. As for Venus taking over all the beds...::shrug:: she was the first. ;)

I have a confession. I cannot be a Luddite. I now own two computers: a Toshiba laptop and a HP Mini. I also drank the Koolaid and joined Twitter. This makes me a twitterpated geek.

Hi, Damien! Welcome to the Fellowship of Fiends! Grab your white jacket and personalize it as you see fit, just leave the buckles. ;)

At 22:47 Blogger Ms T said...

Yeah, I know. I'm constantly missing TV shows that I want to watch. I tried to get a DVR earlier this year, but without photo ID I couldn't get a hire purchase agreement. Hey, I have a passport now - I could try again!

Like I said, I didn't consciously decide to be a Luddite; it just kind of happened. :) (Mind you I did impulse buy a digital camera at the airport duty free. As you do.)

Here's Reason Number Weird to clean your house: Guitar teacher now comes to the house for lessons, and after two weeks of trashy dining room table I got embarrassed enough to shovel it off. I might have frightened the poor guy when he came in to a tidy living and dining room.

Yar, not a clue about DVRs here, either. I wait for shows to come out on DVD. :D

Sweet that you miss your horse. (Is it okay to refer to horses and "horsies"?)

Belated HURRAYS for Calvin and family, and to Wendy, too!

Thinking a lot about the holiday re-thinking. Starting with questioning, like, what do I/we want? We'll be staying home for the first time in years. We can do (or not do) whatever we like. Inviting the monsters into the discussion.

Glad you're starting to feel better, Q.

Tybalt spurned the cat bed I bought him. He choses to sllep in the recycling box instead, and comes to complain when I let the cardboard stack too high in the box...Which reminds me, I need to go to the recycling centre.

No DVR here - Hulu and streaming Netflix take care of my minimal tv watching.

We can't talk to Grendel on the phone - he recognizes the voices and gets very upset when he can't find the actual person. I talk to the cat on the phone when I travel (Nick is a very silly boy sometimes), but never ever the dog.

I have a morning of equations before me. And coffee. LOTS of coffee.

Thank you for the blog post :) I like the story about the cat beds. In my room, I have one giant cat bed that they kindly let me share when it gets dark out and I feel sleepy. Blue-eyes likes to sleep on the pillow that has the divit in the middle (chiropractor recommended it for my neck).

Also, someone posted this on twitter this morning, and I thought of you, Q: http://twitpic.com/rvk4h

Glad you are feeling better Lorraine!

As for the DVR, it is everything I always wanted for my TV viewing pleasures. And I watch a lot of TV. Even when i am not watching TV it is on. I don't like the sound of an empty house. Within minutes in the morning my house goes from 5 people to just me, the sound helps. :-) I don't have time to catch up with all the already posted comments, so I hope I didn't miss anything and nothing else horrible has happened since yesterday. I am sooo ready for next year.

At 09:20 Blogger Cecily said...

Anna Banana- November has turned into hell month for me. Last year's November was probably the worst time period of my entire life. And I have had a humdinger of a life. :-)

At 09:27 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Still not caught up on comments in previous posts...

Most of the year I can't convince Phoebe there are other places to lay besides my lap. But on really hot days, she likes her box lid (the kind that reams of paper come in). I give her a new one every summer. When I was growing up, we had a cat who owned the ironing board. No other cat was allowed to lay on it. And it could never be put away.

I've become a selective Luddite. Laptop, smart phone, twitter - love 'em. But no TV and no microwave. If I hear a TV show is good, I wait till I can get it on Netflix. I miss PBS, but not enough to buy another TV.

Another morning of web conferences today. This last one had better be more interesting than yesterday's. If not, somebody wake me at noon.

At 09:32 Blogger vampi said...

i watch tv on the weekends and when i go to sleep. i like my dvr so i can record things like topgear, dirty jobs, and talk soup and not have to watch live tv. nothing is worse than when the dvr gets stuck on the kardashians or vapid housewives of < insert city here>

I don't think it's even fathomable that we be anywhere near Luddite. My husband is a Network Engineer and a gadget freak.

We have a microwave, but I avoid using it. I don't think foods altered like that are healthy.

At 09:41 Blogger dabbler said...

Hi Lorraine. Even with nothing to say your posts are entertaining!

I'm okay with November, whatever we want to call it. I love the light. Beautiful clear pale skies with all the lovely skeletal silhouettes of trees against it. It's the ethereal kind of light. Completely different from the same sky in January, though I never expect it to be. I sat waiting for P yesterday just marveling at all the individual personalities trees have against the sky, without their cloaks of leaves.

Ahem. I now return you to your regularly scheduled broadcast. And, sympathies, indeed for those whose Novembers have been brutal.

At 10:07 Blogger Phiala said...

Dabbler, the tree shapes are quite species-specific. When I was doing a lot of forest work, I could tell them apart from the Interstate. I'm rusty now, and can only get the obvious ones.

I have taken the organization step of purchasing a 2010 calendar notebook. (Moleskine monthly planner - awesome!). I do better with something I can make random notes in than trying to keep it all online, though I also use computer-based tools.

At 10:11 Anonymous Wendy Withers said...

I watch TV and movies through Hulu and Netflix instant play. If I can't figure out a way to get internet in N'awlins, I don't know what I'll do.

It's interesting how my plans to step outside and pick an orange to eat for breakfast resulted in a new plan to make orange garlic sauteed yellow squash with rice.

At 10:13 Blogger Jess said...

Heh! Saw that in the last thread-- Octoberer. I like that. :D

Cecily, you'll be comforted to know that microwave cooking is perfectly safe. Microwave ovens use a different method of generating heat than a conventional oven does, but not a more dangerous one; likewise, cooking in a microwave doesn't change the atomic structure of your food any more than conventional cooking does. It's honestly not like sticking your dinner in a nuclear reactor, or pouring toxic waste on it.

(And before anyone says anything about microwaves "removing some of the oxygen from water", I would point out that water molecules are made of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. If you removed the oxygen from the compound, you'd get hydrogen. Which is a gas. You don't get hydrogen gas by warming up a container of water to hot-beverage temperatures.)

Dabbler, that's the kind of thing I've been noticing, though the trees here aren't usually bare until at least December.

I'm going to sit over here (on this cat bed) while y'all discuss tv. I weaned myself off it a couple years ago. It lost me a position in the lunchtime discussions of shows, but ultimately I think it's for the best.

But Jess there is additional dissolved oxygen in water, and when you boil it, you lose that, which can change the taste. That oxygen is what you want when drinking from streams -- always get water from places where it's flowing over rocks. Think of the difference between stagnant water and fresh water.

We don't have a microwave either, but it was a matter of losing the busted one and not replacing it when we moved, because we have toaster oven! Love the little toaster ovens.

So, it's now cold by local standards. Currently -14C (7F) and there's a stiff breeze. Will be plugging in the car tonight. Boooo.

We have a 70% chance of snow tonight, I just read. And I'm actually glad - once the cold hits, everything looks much better with snow, 'cause otherwise it's just dirty bare gray and buff dirt and concrete.

Yay Wendy!! I can *SO* relate, and am thrilled for you. You're on your own w/the moving part, though (well, hopefully not actually)--I'm taking a break from *that* subject.

Snow--yes, actually we had several days of rain and up on M mountain it turned to snow. Last I looked (here, let me turn around and peek out the living room window--yep!) there is still snow dusting the north-east slopes and other odd crevices.
My favourite kind of snow--you can look at it...and enjoy the full moon glowing blue off of it...but don't have to wear it.

Q--dreams! They are such a process, esp (ahem) this time of the month. Between motrin, studying, red wine and odd internet reading......well, last night I was trying to square root and cube root My Little Ponies. WEIRD visual! The radical signs all looked like they were made of some heavy metal, and the radicands were all purple w/white blonde manes n tails.

oh...and thank you again, Fiends for your kind support. Fiends understand things that most fellow students are a bit young to appreciate. Though they *are* a loveable bunch of nerds, truly.

At 12:23 Blogger Jess said...

Na, I bow to your wisdom because you have the science degree. But surely what you suggest doesn't mean that microwaves turn fresh water stagnant, or make it unfit to drink. And I believe it's recommended in woodland survival scenarios to boil water before drinking regardless of its freshness. Hah! En garde! Mee-yow! ;D

Anna banana, is there room for two on that there cat bed? After a brief relapse, I finally kicked the TV habit for good about four years ago. Online Daily Show & Colbert Report keep me up to date with US news. I love going out to the cinema with friends, nothing like a good movie with a good audience, that sense of shared experience.

Speaking of movies, has anyone else seen The White Ribbon?

I am not an OCD* cleaner, as I am OCD* with many things. But I like the house to be clean. But that doesn't happen so much. Three kids and a very messy husband make my house in a constant state of clutter. *sigh*

As for microwaves...I don't have the energy to look up where I have found this information as I have been battling a migraine, and well, I don't want to. But most nutrition books strongly push never eating microwaved foods. I believe that there is an issue with some of the nutritional value being removed when it is microwaved, just like with boiling foods.

I have FMS (Fibromyalgia) and in all the things I have read about food and FMS, they all assert not eating microwaved foods, which was fine with me, cause I didn't like them anyway. They taste different, and not in a good way. But once I had facts in print for my hubby to read, he stopped cooking with the microwave, and we both had joint pain improvement within a week. But I am not one to have a rational conversation with about such things, because I tend to live by my gut. My gut says that the microwave is not good for you, so I listen. Since I was a teenager and started being exposed to foods with tons of preservatives and junk in them, my gut told me that those were also bad. And now there is evidence to show that too. Including but not limited too all of those unpronounceable words in foods being cause of migraines, triggers for FMS and I am sure other things. But like I said, not going to spend the time looking up back for those things today.

*OCD being used a description for my quarky behaviors, I do not actually have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

At 12:56 Blogger Jess said...

Oh, I think you're right there, in that they don't cook things evenly, so stuff doesn't always taste as good, and there's always the possibility of losing nutrients from overcooking. It's just not as dangerous as some people claim-- it doesn't turn food into deadly chemicals.

It does appear to turn My Little Pony into them, though.

Billy has a wonderful sketch regarding My Little Pony, if he can share. Mwahahahaha.

No, wasn't suggesting microwaves do anything to water, or didn't mean to anyway. Just meant the bit about the importance and relation to taste of having oxygen in water. I have been tempted to reuse water in the kettle, just to reheat it, but think now that tea tastes a bit better with fresh water each time.

And quite right about the water and treatment or boiling of it when in the wild. I was told to always take water from the tumbling parts of the stream to start with, to minimize the whatnots left for the pump or iodine to have to remove.

Touche!
