I Rode A Horse Up A Hill Today....

I went for a trail ride today. To be more accurate, I went for two. I hadn't planned on even the one, and had even brought my camera so I could take pics of the lesson on long lining with Dim, but my Horse People Friends tend to follow the wind as it were, and I got to the barn to find AnnaMontana waiting, with two other horses, and since it was just the three of us, had to assume plans had changed.

They do that.

But it was lovely, a bit in the ring, and then out for a lovely trail ride around the farm, thru the woods, talking and relaxing.

Then they mentioned they were going to another friends for another trail ride, and would I like to come along? Well, sure, I thought, I can do this again.

Little did I know (Yes, I have always wanted to use that phrase in a sentence) I had not yet, ever, been on a TRAIL RIDE.....

Think about the difference between biking on a paved bike path, and say, Mountain Biking in Colorado. The Bunny hill and a Black Diamond, in Skiing. Jogging a mile and the Boston Marathon.

Uh-huh.

They don't mess around. They were very nice, and picked me a lovely mare named Channel, that's her in the picture above. They kept talking a "Hill" and saying how it really wasn't so bad, so many times I said "Are we talking a little trial by fire never hurt anyone here"

Uh-huh.

Yes, they said, you're going to learn to swim. (And not in the kinder gentler manner, more the "here's the deep end we are throwing you in" kind of way)

The thing was a small mountain. I couldn't believe one could get ANYTHING up it, let alone a HORSE. My friends were really wonderful and there are no other three people I trust more riding (Heh. They said) but they are Adventurous riders.

I am now too.

I got up it. And down the other side, which wasn't as bad, and even ran up yet another hill. Thru the woods, (and let me tell you the TRAIL part of Trail Ride has a wide interpretation,) until we got back to the bottom of the flip side of the Bloody Monster Hill.

Bad feeling.

Yeah. The Big Hill we came UP? Well, if you go at it the other way, it goes DOWN.

It's a lot like it was being covered in Bees for the first time. Sheer terror and disbelief, that one could GET ones self into something like this, followed by a strength, exhilaration and total new sense of, um, Superhero Power. I wouldn't have taken this ride a year ago. It took everything I had in my mind and riding ability to take it today.

I am sure there are any number of metaphors about Climbing Mountains and finding yourself, I can't seem to think of any just now, but I know they are out there. And like the first time being covered in Bees, I am not the same person.

I want to do it again. Only we will run up it this time, like two of my friends did.

We went to dinner afterwords in an old Schoolhouse Bar in, well, I have no idea where it was, as was proven when I got completely lost trying to leave the place, only got home because I accidentally FOUND it again, and went back and made them actually go outside and show me the darn road, but that's bedsides the point.

Had the best meal ever. (I think it was a cheeseburger)

And I rode a horse up a hill today.

Love and Mountains,
Lorraine

Marvelous! Aches tomorrow perhaps, but worth it.

I just watched 7 high school students fill our stash of hundreds of plastic eggs for the annual egg hunt. It, too, was worth it.

Have a beautiful evening and day tomorrow.

Hee! I love your horsie post. Up hills aren't so bad, it's the down that get me. Down hills = half halts. I remember riding in the Va mountains once with my BBF on one of her 4 YOs {Lance's uncle who was 18h BEFORE his forth Bday!} and a 3 YO she'd just imported from Germany. As we trolled around the mountain side all could think was, if I get dumped there is no way I can get back on this mountain {meaning horse not land} and we're insane and both likely to die. LOL Glad you had fun!

Sounds like you had a truly awesome day. I'm with you vinity2, going down is harder, and I haven't gone down a montain, just little hills and very steep irrigation channels.

What an awesome day! Happy spring!

At 00:23 Blogger Cecily said...

You mention sayings having to do with mountains and all I can picture is an old Ziggy cartoon where in he climbs a mountain to ask the wise man at the top what the key to life is. His answer.

Keep breathing.

Your day sounds adventurous and awesome and like you will be mighty sore tomorrow!

Night night time for me now. (actually several hours past really) ;-)

Wow, sounds like it was a fun Adventure!

Wonderful!
Your experience reminds me of climbing sand dunes. You'll be feeling muscles you still did not know you had by tomorrow but it is all well worth the pain. And it shows how much fitter you are now.

ooh sounds like fun:)

Sounds wonderful! What good be better than spending a day doing new and exciting things with trusted friends?

I'm at EasterCon this weekend - lots of fun, and for those of you who haven't yet seen the new Dr Who, I recommend seeing it in the company of around 900 SF fans, if you can manage it. Although it may get a little crowded behind the sofa!

At 06:39 Blogger Lioness said...

What a great time this sounds like it was! I guess you have to hope the saddle was put on correctly? :-)
Learning to ride was one of those things I always wanted to do but at this point, probably never will. So it's great to read of "Lorraine's Adventures in Riding"

Marjorie, looking forward to the new Dr. Who but it's 2 more weeks for us.

Wonderful. :)

Superhero power indeed. Whoot.

At 07:40 Blogger Jess said...

Woot! Next: running up the hill bareback, with bagpipes. Or violin. And wearing a big cape.

Lioness, YouTube is your friend. Your best friend.

Ooh, I want to start throwing around favorite lines but I can't. It was ace though. Will not disappoint. Apart from the new opening theme, which did. But I figure from now on I'll just plug my ears and hum along to the old version really, really loud. It's a trifling sacrifice to have to make. David who??

Hooray for Lorraine! At least YOU made it. I did that uphill ride once, the saddle thingy that goes under the horse thingy broke and I ended up in a tree. Seriously, it was like a cartoon, slamming into the tree and sliding down in slow motion. But cartoon characters don't generally end up at the chiropractor.....
I couldn't find the bookmark for your blog today, seems after reading your blog on bengals and keyboards, I left the laptop open and SomeBody sat on it. I found it under faiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllooooooooo. And needless to say it didn't go to your site anymore. At least SomeBody didn't email anyone this time:) lv, T.

Morning all!

Actually I'm not sore at all, except a bit in my hands of all places. Perhaps I was gripping the reins and I know I didn't have gloves....

It was pretty darn cool. LOved it. You know that feeling you get when you push yourself and do something you think you can't? That's it.

Forgot to mention my friends near fell OFF their horses when I did run up the littler hill. I, um, kind of yelled the same word over and over.

My sister Tracy really did end up in a tree riding. But she has other skills. (Very funny about the bookmark. Does this mean your kitties want me Bengal blogs?)

Lioness, if you want to, do it. It's never too late. I remember Mel had a client who was 85 years old, he's always wanted to ride, and darned if he didn't.

Considering various Plans for the day. Seems fairly open. Odd.

Stretching your body, your spirit, your life. All good.

At 10:07 Blogger Na said...

I so love this post!!! And friends who take you on expected adventures? Golden. (but not in a been-touched-by Midas/Goldfinger way, of course.)

New Doctor on already!?!?

I am proof-reading a (gorgeous marine science) textbook these days. It's going to be ugly schedule for another week or so.

But it's relatively nice out today, so I'm taking some hours to pry myself from the computer and go for a picnic and hike with the family. Elder monster has an interest in birding, so we're taking the binoculars, list, and guidebook, too. With luck, we'll see some bison, too!

The Benagls are having a liver I cooked for them. It was totaly gross but Magic and Lear loved it. Venus thought it sucked. Mim is the only one who is actually making it into an EVENT tho.

Had there been any possibility that liver had still been alive, she would have made sure it didn't live LONG...

What an exhilarating feeling to find yourself in an unexpected place, expected to achieve more than you thought possible!

For a brief moment, I, too was with you riding down that hill, feeling the wind and the fear and doing dam-all anyway.

Thanks for sharing.

Today I got my kid to fill out his application for art school. A number of similarities to your mountain ride...especially the uphill part.

At 14:12 Blogger Chantrelle said...

That sounds like an amazing adventure Q!

At 14:23 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Thanks Bill, and welcome! It was the most amazing feeling, having done that. It carries over, doing something that intense that you fear.

Like I can do or handle anything.

I HAVE THE POWER!!!!!!!!!!

See? Cooked liver today. Never did THAT before either.

At 15:51 Blogger ariandalen said...

Yay! Though, having been on a trail ride at a dude ranch when I was 12, down the hill is scarier in my opinion. Still, once you're on top of the hill, you have to come down it before you can go home. Great adventure!

Liver is good! I grew up on smothered liver and onions. Yum! Unfortunately, most places you get liver and onions, the liver is fried beyond recognition. :( I like chicken liver, too.

Hi,vinity2 and Bill Peschel! Glad your inner Fiends decided to join the rest of us! Grab one of those white, buckled jackets over there, any of the supplies on the nearby table, and have fun personalizing your jacket. :)

At 17:31 Blogger Siri said...

The Easter sermon this morning was about taking advantage of 2nd chances - not letting them pass you by.

I think Lorriane is living her second changes. Good example for all of us.

(The main 2nd chance in the sermon was about liver, too, but in the sense of getting one donated to an 18-year-old, so he can continue living. There was no frying, and no onions.)

At 18:11 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Let's be clear here: -I- do not eat liver. The Bengals do. It is CAT FOOD.

Lovely ride today, just exactly perfect. Not an ADVENTURE RIDE, JUST RING WORK AND A GENTLE TRAIL RIDE. Oops. Caps lock.

Me and the Bengals are having chicken now. Even Venus admits the chicken doesn't suck TOO badly. AT least she is eating and heck, it's cheaper than cat food.

Any Fiends in Athens? The Fiendmap seems to be not working. I will check into that.

At 18:51 Blogger Beez said...

Well, talk about taking the best advantage of our Very Early Spring.
Hurrah for hills and trails and woods and doing things you didn't think you would/could!

Hurrah for liver!

....that does seem a bit wrong somehow.

At 19:32 Blogger Fluffy said...

'Hurrah for liver?' Yes, that does seem wrong. Of course, that may be due to my deep-seated dislike of organ meats. Heh, heh. Organ meats. Sorry.

My philosophy, stolen from someone far more clever than me, is that if it filtered or thought, I'm not eating it.

Oh, goody. Tomorrow is half-off Easter candy. A chance for all us heathens to celebrate!

At 19:46 Blogger Na said...

Go Lorraine, go! I've reread this post several times; Not sure why, but finding it particularly inspirational.

Speaking of uphill, we found one of those magical trails today - you know, the kind that is bewitched to be all uphill, no matter which direction you're going on it. And quite cold but sunny weather, but it was just nice to be out in it.

At 19:46 Blogger Jane said...

No fiends in Athens that *I* know of, but I do have an aunt and a few cousins there. Fun place, what I have seen of it.

At 19:46 Blogger Laura B said...

What a fun adventure!

All of this talk of liver is bringing back bad childhood memories of choking down liver smothered in mustard.(I had to block the taste somehow)

At 19:54 Blogger Chantrelle said...

My sister lived (and almost died) in Athens but she's not there anymore. If you get sick while there, I highly recommend Athens Regional Medical Center. They saved her life. She had systemic MRSA, they admitted her right away and got her on the right antibiotics. Had to replace her heart valve. It was crazy. I was pregnant w/ ben at the time, had to drop everythign and fly out there, they didn't think she was going to make it another day. She was in a coma 5 weeks and woke up on Easter (2004). She is RISEN!!! ;-)

But, no, don't know anyone in athens now! (how's that for a long answer to a question you didnt' ask!)

At 19:58 Blogger Fluffy said...

Madeleine, I smothered my compulsory liver in ketchup and A-1 sauce. Cut the liver up tiny enough that I could swallow it without chewing. Mom made me eat it because the family doctor told her I was anemic. I begged for iron pills, to no avail.

At 20:16 Blogger Laura B said...

Ugh. I did get to take iron supplements when I was anemic, at least. My parents just always had this rule that we had to eat at least a small serving of whatever was for dinner, even if we hated it. I still can't eat liver and canned peas.

At 20:27 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Parents who MAKE their kids eat things lose, hands down. The kid won't, they have a bad memory of it and dinner is no longer fun.

I always told mads, when she freaked seeing something new, heck try it, you don't like it I'll make you something you do. Took all the pressure off, and let her actually SEE if she liked it.

I have horrid memories of some things my parents tried to make me eat....

I'll make it for the kitties now tho. Maybe once a week.

Been feeding Magic with a spoon, and giving him little pets while I do. Ssssllloowwwwlyyyy...We will win him.

I still need to go back thru the blog for Bengal posts. Have a Call in the morning.

At 21:04 Blogger Dragonsally said...

*shudder* thinking of all the offal I haven't had to eat. Many years ago a friend had a dinner party, and we'd all eaten informed us that we'd just had brains. Never forgave him for that and I don't think we ever ate there again.

At 21:12 Blogger vampi said...

i will generally try something once as long as you tell me what it is, except for brains, tongue, liver, intestine.

i am pretty damn sure i don't like liver, so i will no longer try that anymore.

and why doesn't anyone understand that just because i may eat bacon once or twice a year, i do not like pork chops or ham, 2 totally different meats from the same animal. (i don't really like bacon either, but i won't be rude when it's made for me)

i am the only one in my family that doesn't like liver, it's bitter and metallic, i guess it's the iron. ick ick ick.

At 21:19 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Sometimes I eat bacon BUT I HATE PIGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

REALLY REALLY HATE PIGS!!!!!!!

Not kidding.

At 21:22 Blogger Na said...

I really like Fluffy's "if it has filtered or thought" rule. I also prefer meat to be as removed from its original form as possible.

Me' mum was forced to eat fish every Friday, and vowed, when she had us, not to ever force anything on us, no way, for which I'm so very grateful.

I've had blood pudding. Was sure it was something I didn't want, but my Swedish host family persuaded me to take "at least one bite." Eeeek! I did. They told me. Eeeek! Then one of my host-brothers came in and snarfed down a huge helping. Eeeek!

At 21:53 Blogger Laura B said...

I used to like bacon, but I can barely eat it now. Gives me sick headaches. I think it must be something to do with nitrates.

At 22:11 Blogger Fluffy said...

I looove bacon. And really, if I hated pigs (and I haven't ever known any well enough to say...) I would consider bacon a just revenge.

Tomorrow. Half-price chocolate. Ahahahahahaha!!!!!

At 22:12 Blogger Fluffy said...

Ahem. I'm not deranged. Really. I have a note.

At 22:29 Blogger ariandalen said...

I haven't eaten brains, that I know of anyway. I like liver, calf fries, tongue, and I'm fairly certain that I've had sausage that had traditional intestine casing. I've also eaten beef heart and blood pudding. Wasn't sure I would like it when I tried it, but I ended up liking blood pudding. If you have eaten hot dogs (non-kosher) or bologna, you've eaten various pieces/parts of (usually) pig.

I've also eaten pickled quail eggs and liked them, but I'm not sure you could convince me to eat Thousand Year Eggs, or bird's nest soup. I like shrimp, even after hearing them described as "cockroaches of the sea" and realizing it is a pretty accurate description. I grew up eating lots of catfish and buffaloe (a type of fish), and I know that catfish are bottom feeders.

My parents didn't force me to eat anything. If I didn't like what was on the table, I went hungry. Guess what? I didn't go hungry.

After all, mushrooms are fungi.

At 22:59 Blogger One Sock Short said...

I think Mom's rule of having to eat one bite worked well for me. I still feel obliged to try a bit of avocado once in a while. Still don't like it. I also absorbed her advice to just get the foods I don't like out of the way so I can enjoy the rest of the meal. That sometimes gets me offers of seconds of something bad, because I must have liked the thing I just ate up first.

Though it sounds strange coming from a vegetarian, I loved Mom's liver and onions when I was growing up. She was careful not to let me see the uncooked liver until I was older though ;-) I also loved chicken gizzards. They used to be super cheap, so we had them a lot.

Now any kind of meat seems gross to me. Poor Phoebe, without even the chance to steal some from my plate.

At 06:42 Blogger Phiala said...

Packed: knitting, book to read (Palimpsest by Cat Valente, started at Fiendcon and never finished, not because it's bad but because it's dense and I hadn't the brain. Nor sure I do now either!), computer, toothbrush, camera. And wallet.

That's all I need, right?

I was just reminded to always know where my towel is, but I'm not sure they allow those thru airport security any more.

Just need to finish my tea.

And tell you all that chocolate is good for you. Medically as well as psychologically.

At 08:26 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Good luck Mistress! Safe travels. ALl I know about Athens is a lot of great music came out of there. Might still be around.

Seems early.

Well, to be frank. It IS early.

Seems a lovely day tho, and there is a ride at the end of it. Which is good.

At 08:39 Blogger Cecily said...

Madeline, it's not easy to find, but I get the bacon with no nitrates or nitrites. Still just as yummy, but not nearly as bad for you!

At 09:56 Blogger Na said...

I'm a fan of turkey bacon. :)

My day is shaping up to include several conference calls. This is unusual. And mildly irritating. Not a serious complaint of course: I am very happy to have work.

Half-price chocolate, now that might make it all better... shall have to investigate... (too bad it doesn't apply to all the yummy organic stuff...)

At 12:32 Blogger Unknown said...

You know, I was just thinking that I'm not living enough (as in living it up enough, or doing things that scare me often enough) and then I get confirmation - I cannot say that something new "was just like the FIRST time I was covered in bees."

Must go and become covered in bees ASAP.

OK, want to go to House on the Rock for halloween.
Have to convince hubby.

We can go see his folks in Chicago, head to spring green, either back to chicago or up to see you Lorraine? I can make frittata ;-)

Last (and only) time I was at House on the Rock I ran into Neil in the cafe. Most surreal experience EVER.

Doing stuff that scares you is good. Two years ago went to my first ever con, and last year to Dublin to meet Louisa, and then of course to MN to meet so many fiends - both turned out really well:-)

for anyone who is interested (and not following me on Twitter) I've been at EasterCon all weekend, and have blogged it @ here just finished last panel, and waiting for food before crashing for the night. It's been great fun but I think I have only had about 12 hrs sleep in total in the last 3 days!

At 14:51 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Holla, Vampi. Any House on the Rock possibilities will have to wait till I know if I can go to a conference I've requested funding for. It's in mid-October, so I couldn't do both. If I can't go to the conference though, HOTR might be possible, and would help make up for the disappointment of not seeing PA Fiends. If the uncertainty is okay for now, I'd love to be considered a potential roomie.

At 15:01 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Artful, well, yes, there is that, but if you CAN get covered in Bees, it's a cool thing.

Regarding House on the Rock (I take it it has been announced then?) I am going to be working, and Fod knows how many guests the Boss will end up with.. Fun as it would be to see/host Fiends on their way thru, ain't going to happen...I love you. LOTS, but I gots to work.

I'll see you there tho!

And, no, not at all cruel, since it's my 1st choice too. As fun as the HOTR thing sounds, the other combines professional development in a much-needed direction with Fiendish goodness. In other words, a very responsible good time! But one couldn't ask for a better Plan B ;-)

At 15:58 Blogger Precision Grace said...

Oh Fods, how much do I want to go to the house on the rock thing?! LOTS. That's how much. I hope all the tickets don't sell out while I negotiate the sale of my kidney to fund this fun.

Oh and also - yay Q for getting up the metaphorical and literal hill and so sorry for not being able to help with Bengal search - the time has literally just DISAPPEARED from me and now I have to go to sleep and to work :(

Is this no fiends allowed anywhere near the house set in stone? Not even for 30 minutes just to see the Bengals you don't even have to talk to me - kind of thing ;)

Aaargh. Lost the post. Was thinking "No," for the HOTR thing until it occurred to me that A Bunch O' Fiends = A Very Good Time. Anyone know what the registration limit is?

Forgot to get chocolate on sale today but will go to Walgreen's tomorrow. They don't sell out as quickly as Target. On the plus side, I got more yard work done - fertilized all the acid-loving plants and raked and weeded.

i booked us at the resort, too, just now.

The person I spoke to said there are about 30 rooms left at the resort and she said she's been busy since she got to work at 3p, booking rooms for this event. Amazing response, she said, given that the notification went out today.

She hasn't read American Gods yet but is going to get right on it - can borrow a copy from her boss.

Jane! Thanks for the info - it got me motivated to reserve a room. Got one. Now to contact my friend in Kansas to see if she can make it. Then I guess I should mention it to Dennis?

Steve made me do it - the rooms are going to be gone and you're going to miss it, he said. Glad i gave in and OMG am going to meet some fiends (I mean in addition to Ticia).

And of course the event itself, can't ignore that!

Oh, yeah. There's an event!

Do you think you could all put together a collection and fly me over for the HOTR thing?
Seriously guys, I am full of envy right now.

And Animal Planet? O.M.G.
That is awesome

Many thanks for the extra information, Chantrelle. I actually never finished American Gods. It was the only adult novel of his I didn't finish, but I didn't really like it.

I know that sounds blunt but I figured it MIGHT be okay to admit ...

I liked American Gods a lot - it was a big, sweeping kind of story, but I was grossed out by one or two parts. My favorites are TGB, Stardust and Anansi Boys, so far.

Anyone know if Himself will be doing any signing?

I am partial to Anansi Boys. No sale. But I also love The Graveyard Book. So for me it's Anansi Boys (again, NO SALE), The Graveyard Book, Coraline, Stardust, and Neverwhere. Of course there are all those fantastic short stories as well.

My comment got so long I did a new post!

And it is UP!

I'm sort of with EmilyLady - LOVE some of the short stories most of all. Not to knock anything else but the best stories are just marvelous (hoping for more in the future).
