Diesel Has A Chance, But Needs A Ridee....
I wanted to clarify my remarks on Twitter this morning, about never adopting a Bengal from a Pet Store. They were spoken without detail, and more in frustration. This is Diesel, a really sweet 9 month old Bengal who was bought at a pet store a few months ago. He has some severe upper respiratory problems, and needs about $1000 worth of vet care, and likely more, which his owner doesn't have.
We have a Vet in Michigan, Detroit area who will donate care, and if they suit, and Diesel lives, may adopt him. Diesels owner wants to do everything she can for him, but Diesel is in Evanston, IL. He needs a ride, or a plane ticket.
Anyone out there? We can save him if we can get him to Michigan.
This happens a lot in pets bought from pet stores. They are sick, they are not from a reputable breeder. NO member of the TIBCS (International Bengal Cat Society) would ever sell to a pet shop.
No reputable breeder of ANY animal would.
The exception to this rule about adopting from a pet shop, is places like PetCo (for one) who are holding adoption drives with a local animal shelter. This is a good thing, and should be encouraged.
The animal shelter is the best place to go to when looking for a pet.
If you decide you want a pedigreed pet of a certain kind, find a reputable breeder. I don't mean "Show Quality" , I mean a breeder who breeds and cares responsibly for their animals. Who makes sure they are healthy, spayed and neutered. Do your homework and find someone who is a member of whatever Association is in place for the breed. (Like TIBCS for Bengals)
If you want a Bengal, get this:
I can set you up with a Bengal RIGHT THIS SECOND for $150. We have them in Foster care. THEY NEED HOMES!
Bengals in pet shops were most likely bred from Bengals that were never meant to be bred. They may carry strains of illness, or indeed just be sick FROM being in the pet shop. They will sell for more than the going rate. From a breeder of good standing, that's $600 for a pet kitten. The Pet shop will sell them for $900 each, and will have likely acquired an entire litter for that one price. They will have no papers.
My wistful thinking says I wish we could make a STOP BREEDING ANY ANIMALS rule until everyone that's here has a good home. But we can't. Let's stop the sale of dogs and cats in pet shops tho. Nothing good can come of this.
There are too many animals in need of homes.
We have WAY too many Bengals alone in Rescue right now, and are very close to having to close to any more.
If you can help Diesel get to Michigan, contact me at email@example.com
If you would like to adopt a Bengal in Rescue go to the Great Lakes Bengal Rescue Webite
If you just want to help: Paypal to: firstname.lastname@example.org
Love and Thank you,
Pet shops are generally a bad source for animals, not just Bengals. Reputable breeders, ones you can visit and see the animals and the facilities. Breed rescue, plain old shelters if you aren't concerned about papers.
Pet shop puppies have the same kinds of problems (disease, overpricing, who knows what history).
If we were further north we could help with transportation. As it is, I've retweeted and posted on FB...
Making a donation right now.
Both of our cats were acquired from the street. Hubby rescued his kitty from a gutter outside a Nirvana concert in 1991. I got my late cat from a housemate who found him in a box by grocery store. Our local PetSmart partners with shelters and has a great cat setup....no bengals that i've ever seen!
Ben's over his horrendous stomach bug and back at school today. I seem to be suffering from that celebrity disease of "exhaustion". Coughing, sore throat, achy, sooo tired. Couldn't break down when ben needed me, now my body is saying "ENOUGH!"
Still have to get the house in order at least some. It's a wreck but the new wood floors are stunning!
Yes. And buying from those who are not reputable breeders makes it worth their while to carry on breeding unhealthy animals.
It's pretty much horrid.
Good advice about steering clear of pets from pet stores. Too many people don't care enough to do what it takes to ensure that the pet they are getting is from a reputable source.
marjorie hit the nail on the head, it's a self perpetuation disease as unknowing people purchase poorly bred/cared for animals, enticing the sellers to keep selling animals.
a real breeder actually doesn't make a lot of money on the animals because of all the time and resources that go into breeding and caring for the animals properly.
it might be worth reaching out to something like http://petairways.com/ and seeing if they will donate a flight or at least reduce charges and people can donate to afford the flight.
Unfortunately Pet Airlines doesn't fly into Detroit. I think car is probably the best way to get him there. With gas so high it does limit volunteers but maybe if we are able to pay gas it would work.
What about flying from Chicago to Detroit?
The Pet Airline flies into Chicago but not Detroit. I have emails into two of our fosters, one near Chicago and one near Detroit to see if they are willing to meet to get Diesel to the Vet if we pay their expenses. Will let you all know.
If someone *really* wants a 'pure bred' - most shelters offer a waiting list. A friend of mine & her partner adopted a bloodhound & a boglin - both puppies at the time.
Rescued & in a home where they are loved & cared for. The bloodhound had some medical issues but they were willing to take on the care needed. He's healthy now.
Thoughtful adoption/rescue is key.
Oh my - Diesel is here in Evanston. How soon does he need to travel? Is he at CARE or still at home? Did they buy from a local pet store? Hate to think that our local folks sold this little guy...
I might be able to find a ride toward MI but most folks I know travel to MI on the weekend. Do we need to get this kitty safe right now? I don't have the cat friendliest home, (big dogs) but I could provide immediate shelter.
Email me directly at tabor330 [at] gmail. I'll ask my Michiganders.
Oh,I hope Kate being right there means something can get done right away.
All of our 3 beloveds were rehomed...Razzie being purebred we found through our State's Dalmatian club. So many wonderful animals need homes, in countries across the globe.
Diesel is safe but needs medical attention. Owners have had him only a short time and want no harm to come to him but they just don't have the $1000 for testing that their Vet has quoted. So if he can get to Dr. Karen in MI she has agreed to test and treat as a donation as long as it is possible. Right now with no testing other than FELV/FIV we don't know what is wrong with him.
Off topic, but Marjorie - is Gordon Brown stepping down a good thing, or a bad thing?
I've got a shout-out to my friend who lives in Farmington Hills, MI, which is near Detroit. I'll let you know once I hear back from her.
fly by tick
Thank you! I'll keep you posted on Diesel, we are going to help him.
Had a great ride on Dim, FRISKY horsie!!!! He loves his new halter and purple booties.
Here's a pic from today, but you can't see the booties.
Nice Big Bang Theroy tonight. Laughed!
[Sorry for getting all boring and political here - blame Jess!]
On balance, I'd say it was probably a good thing. There's little chance the Lib Dems would enter into a coalition with Labour with him still there, and considering he got rejected at the polls, he really has to go. Coupled with the promise of electoral reform, I think this is a very promising development.
Of course, if you're a supporter of the Tories, it's probably not a good thing as they would very much want the Lib Dems in government with them. I don't think this is likely as the majority of the party (although not the current leadership) is idealogically quite a long way from the Tory position, especially on Europe. I can't see a coalition lasting more than six months.
Disclaimer: I waver between the Lib Dems and Labour, although I've not been able to support Labour recently. Personally, Brown's resignation isn't quite enough to bring me back but we'll see if some of the more authoritarian policies (ID cards and so on) go with him. If so, definitely a good thing.
No worries, Fiend in Law, chatter about whatever pleases anyone best.
Tho I don't blame Jess. She would never bother her pretty little head over icky politics!!!!!!!!
Au contraire. I've been watching the Conservatives run round like headless chickens all day. It's hilarious. :D
Oh, I don't know about that. You should hear the language whenever Dick Cheney is mentioned!
Fffft! Fffft! N'raagh!
Well, headless chickens ARE kind of funny, I admit...
NO ONE should get my Sister Tracy started on politics...
You have been WARNED!!!!!
I think I killed us...
I don't MIND politics...Don't exactly understand mind you, but don't MIND...
I've been watching the situation in the UK with some amusement. Since MMP was brought in here (that's mixed member proportional representation, which replaced a first past the post system) that's pretty much what every NZ election looks like - deals are made left, right, and centre. (Oops, unintentional pun.)
It gets really interesting when some of the minority coalition partners don't really...hmmm, how shall I put it?...get along.
And I should add that I'm not intending to criticise MMP.
In completely unrelated news, I sent off my first batch of flowers and leaves to the OutdoorKnit project. I might have to nip out to the Hutt on my next day off - I'm looking forward to seeing the light poles transformed into trees.

Diesel is such a handsome boy! I hope whatever is wrong is easily treated.
Great picture of you and Dim, Ms. Fabulous! Glad you got a chance to ride him. :)
Only one more dose of Clavamox to give to Tangwyn. Round 2 of uremia, even after changing his food. Right now, I just want him to eat more. ::SIGH::
this was quite an introduction to "big bang" theory.
Poor Diesel! I am willing to chip in for an airplane tickets since I can't drive him.
make sure you post photos Ms T.
I'm afraid I'd gone to bed so didn't see your question until this morning, but I see that the Fiend-in-Law stepped in - and I agree. From what I can gather, Mr Brown & Mr Clegg do not get on at all on a personal level, so Brown going makes a Lib/Lab pact easier - and I think that for a lot of people the election was a rejection of Brown personally, as well as the party generally, so his stepping down will probably mean more disillusioned Labour supporters will feel they can return.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed - lots of policies of the last government I don't agree with (ID cards, detention of 'terror suspects' Digital Economy bill etc) but I think that a Lib/Lab government is very definitely the 'least worst' option we have right now.
Moving on: I hope progress is being made in helping Diesel out (Query - is it just lack of funds stopping the current owner from keeping him? would funding the tests & immediate care he needs now be a first option before trying to move him?)
Either way, being to far off to offer driving help I've sent a donation, and hope to hear good news soon.
Sorry, not even politics can lure me away from my favoritest thing: Cats. I learned the hard way that a respiratory problems in Kittens can be something called Feline Herpes. I brought my baby Rio in from the back yard after having her tested for Feline Leukemia (negative), only to have her and the whole household full nearly die over the winter from respiratory infections. Don't know why it's called herpes, as it bears no relation to the human kind, but it's incurable and generally only affects the kittens, older cats and immune deficient. (I had besides the kitten, an OLDER cat, and a cat with IMMUNE problems). They've since recovered from the worst respiratory stuff but still get colds. One sure sign of feline herpes is ONE runny eye. Rio's has been bad for all of her three years and she has a big cataract over it now. She'll have it taken out at some point here. I don't regret the decision, my baby is 13 pounds now, but every night at some point she crawls under the covers with me and sucks her tail and purrs. I can't save them all but I saved that one.
LORRAINE, however, is well on her way to saving them ALL! YOU ARE FABULOUS!!
BTW, don't the Liberals AND Labour kinda dislike the current American government?? (Not that that has any bearing on what's best for Britain.) At least the Tories would be nice to us. (Which is funny and ironic coming from an American Historian:)
The LIbDems think that we should focus more on relationships within europe, and less with following US choices, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they don't like you ;-)
I think that across all political parties there is a growing feeling that the "special relationship" doesn't benefit as it may have done in the past.
If it helps any, I think we **all** like your cuurent President better than we liked the last one :-)
Marjorie, so do I!
As far as pet stores go, if any fiends are located in the Dallas area - we picket Petland every Saturday. The Lewisville store closed a couple of months ago so we are now focused on the remaining four in the Metroplex. I'll be at the Frisco store from 12:30p - 1:30p on Saturday!
Oh, I hope Diesel can get the help he needs. He's very handsome.
Loved the videos in the last post, by the way.:)
My daughter likes to visit pet stores to look at all the animals, but my husband can hardly stand to take her in because of the awful condition of most of the animals. Most of the shops around here are really bad.
Thought the Eddie Izzard fans here would appreciate this. Ben was asking yesterday what he could have for a snack...
Me: "Your choices are apple or banana."
Ben: "My choices are cake or death."
We have rides lined up for Diesel! Sadly, he needs unleaded. GLBR funds very low.
If you can send a fiver for Diesel, paypal:
We will save this Bengal!!!!!
Oh, and good on you Carol Ann!
OK. Noon. Barely done with the morning email storm. Now I must go to work.
I was telling my friends Annie and Jacques in North Carolina about you Lorraine. Your "No one dies on my watch" amazingness. When they lived in Greenwich village they took in every cat that crossed their path. At one point I think they had more than 20! They still have Dito who I met in 2003 in NY. He taught himself to pee in the toilet. They now have Buzzy who Dito taught to use the toilet!! They are awesome cats.
The fact that we can make a difference to animals we've never met in person is the best thing about the immediacy and connectedness of the Internet.
*Sigh* We now have David Cameron as Prime Minister.
Please send chocolate.
Since Detroit gets no respect yay for that vet who is so generous!
Wow, you all did it!!! We have enough now to get Diesel to MI. Will let you know when the play is firm. Thank you all so much and Lorraine, thank you.
Yay! Thank heavens! for tax returns, and an IRS who for the past two years has been refunding me MORE than I ask for when filing.
As soon as this pesky school stuff wraps (24-48 hours) I can get back to proper web support for you, Janet, and the shops -- instead of just donating.
/end happy dance, back to salt mines
