Kidnaping Road Crew and Covering Them in Mushrooms, Bengals and Bees...

Mr Drew and Adriene, friends of ours (Mr Drew is in fact ENGAGED to Miss Kitty) are out on the Conan O'brian Tour just now, and as it almost never happens, they had a day OFF as they came thru Minneapolis.

What could I do but kidnap them? Fate, I say, fate.

Much fun was had. By all. We visited Bees, and hunted the wild Morel (successfully I might add, Mr Drew turned out to be good at it) played with Dogs and hung out with the Bengals (Adriene is a Cat Whisperer, kid you NOT)

I got a little nervous at the Bees, wished The Birdchick or Boss had been along. The first hive we went to, I call it the White Hive, as it is, well White, was a nasty hive. Those were some PISSED OFF bees. Didn't want us in there, even tho our only goal was to give them another feeder pail, they buzzed, and bonked and basically told us to get the HELL out of there.

I did. Bees don't have to tell me twice.

They other hives were more mellow, but angry bees un-nerve me.

In the evening we lit off some fireworks Mr Drew had managed to acquire on the way out, including one with an army guy who came down in a parachute. Very fun.

Adriene has a WAY with kitties, and the Bengals SO responded to her. Especially Lear and Mab. Mab was nearly cuddly! Kept coming up and wanting to be petted, Lear ate from her hands. It made me SO happy to watch, to see them loving and interacting. She would make a wonderful home for them, were she not on the road so much. There hasn't been anyone except Miss Kitty, and maybe Spooky Cleaning Teen who have had any luck with him before this.

As much as I love them, especially Lear, if they could have one person who would be exclusively THEIR person, and was the right person for them, I would give them up. Five Bengals is too many and a LOT of work. I try and love and work with them all, but three would be plenty and I can't help thinking Lear and Mab would thrive and become true pets, if they had the kind of one on one, all the time attention that I don't have time to give them, that someone like me, who loved them like me, could.

We also took Venus and Mim out on Leashes, which was fun. Mr Drew said afterwards, it had been a good day because he had done three things he had never done before: Seen Bees up close, hunted Mushrooms, and Walked a Cat on a Leash.

(DO I know how to PARTY with Road Crew or WHAT?)

The next night Woodsman Hans, Non-Birding Bill and I went down to see the Conan Show and visit our friends at work. I had never seen Conan's show, and I didn't know him or what he did exactly, and wasn't sure how a talk show host could turn that into a three hour show.

I'll tell you how he did it: Brilliantly.

Amazing show. Comedy, music, video. Did you know Conan played music? Yup! Sure as heck does. Loved the show, kind of one of those that you really, really didn't want to end. Timing was perfect and spot on, pace was great, acts well written, and he is simply a wonderful performer. His improv is right there and very quick. Loved the way they worked Minneapolis specifically into the show. These people can write, and they can perform.

I am sure there are proper reviews out there is you want to read about who was with him, and who did what ect. I can't recall names to save my life, but go and google it and if you can, go and see this show.

He's great. I love him. I support him in whatever it is he ever wants to do.

I hear tell also, he is not taking the $$'s from this tour. He is doing it for his band, his co-horts, his writer, his crew who otherwise would be unemployed just now until his new TV show starts.

Guy is huge thumbs up in my book.

Fine argument for Rockabilly too.

And at the end, a little movie Adriene took of King Lear the Huge eating.

Love, Friends on the Road, and Conan
Lorraine

AHHHHH, I just accidentally deleted my comments.

Lear looks so gorgeous coming up to be hand fed.

I said more than that before.

thank goodness you didn't post that one of Boyfriend looking like a total loon at the fireworks store..
but i do enjoy the loony bee dance he is doing in the hive yard.
so SO glad you got to see the show and part one of our diabolical plan to get the Royals to go live with the Original Lioness is completed.
She will Not be on the road forever, and they are really meant to be California Royals, like HRH the Princess Kylie.
thanks for taking such good care of the crew!
only thing missing, The Birdchick. xoxo

i keep watching that movie of Leary.
he is such a big worry face head.
i LOVE him.

At 18:27 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

He is a Big Worry Face Head! Adriene would do well with him, told her to think on it, they can stay as long as they need to, but if she goes off road, they will love her forever.

I didn't post the Demonic Boyfriend with Fireworks pic. It was a BIT too much.

Sure did have fun pyroing with him tho!

At 18:37 Blogger vampi said...

i must say, lear is looking fit in that video. has he slimmed down a bit? his look of fear is fading as well, it was cool to see him so active and coming up to others. you are taking the doom and gloom right out of him. <3

At 18:41 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Please to forgive my ignorance but, who's who in pic #4?

Lear acting all tame(ish)! A wonderful sight!

Ok, comments are getting weird, says there are 6, showing three, and nothing coming into my email..

What a cool life you have!

Love the Lear video.

Back to eye Dr, retinal specialist today. No permanent eye damage, not quite out of the woods yet but signs are good and still heading off for a week in UT tomorrow.

Packing, argh..

At 19:40 Blogger Jess said...

Weird. It says ten comments on the main page, but there are only four comments here. Internets weirdness, I s'pose.

Lear's got a sweet face. :)

Wondered what show you were seeing last night! Didn't know Conan was on tour! Or that he played Rockabilly. Or that he no longer had a show. Or did I? Color me clueless.

Feeling a bit down today: someone on an internet forum Mr. Jess and I frequent was killed in a car wreck. No sympathies needed-- I only ever spoke to her twice-- but how is it possible to feel so sad for someone you never actually knew? She was young, too-- only 26. The world is a strange and unfair place. :(

At 20:32 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Comments are really weird...Is anyone else seeing anything?

At 20:34 Blogger Jane said...

My comment is not showing up.

At 20:34 Blogger Jane said...

Oh, now that one did.

At 20:44 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Wow, I see what you mean about the comments. Blog is only showing 4 yet I've had heaps to my email.

Jess, of course its possible to feel sad. Not only is it unfair because she was so young, but you'll be feeling it for her family and friends. And car smashes are so senseless and undiscriminating.

At 20:45 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Huh, according to my emails there are 15 comments and only 5 showing up on the blog. This makes the 16th.

At 21:33 Blogger AletaMay said...

Happy times! Great video of Lear. So cool to see him interacting that way.

At 21:38 Blogger Ms T said...

Hmm, I'm also noticing some numerical freakiness with the comments.

But now I'm here...I just wanted to say that it did sound like a very good day (Bees! Mushrooms! Bengals! Excellent!), and that the first picture looked a little like "We come in peace. Now take us to your leader."

Right back to work. (It's Budget Day here. Interesting things are happening to the tax system.)

I must say that Miss Adrienne has a lovely smoky voice and I would take steak from her hand anytime.

Jess, it always reminds me just how previous and fragile life is. So sad, no matter how well you knew them.

Quiche, I love what Drew said. It's a very special day when you can do 3 things you've never done. :)

Okay, here's a sentence you won't hear me say very often... Nighty-night, fiends. I hope your dreams are filled with magic and your tomorrows are filled with dreams.

Ooh...spooky...invisible comments.

(Let's see if this one gets through, since my first one didn't.)

At 22:45 Blogger Ms T said...

Aha. Blogger is selectively eating comments. I swear I left one about 30 seconds ago - I saw it appear at the end of the list and everything.

I wonder how long this one will last? (They also seemed to be preceded by "processing errors". Are the comments giving blogger indigestion?)

Yay for little parachute guys.

So, is there any way you could give up the Bengals? Do you have any idea how you would go abotu that?

At 08:59 Blogger Phiala said...

I at least got to EAT some morels, but didn't find any this year, and here it's too late.

I've been in New Hampshire working 13-hour days so we could come back early and miss the rain, which turns out to be a good thing as one of the techs is now in the hospital having his appendix removed.

I was talking to a friend last weekend. She'd taken in a stray, and after it became apparent that the owners weren't going to show up she took it to the vet for shots, neutering, etc. He looked at it: "You've got a Bengal!"

I started laughing.

She's had some adventures, of course, and was very interested in the idea of a cat wheel. I offered to put her in touch with Q if she needed advice, but it sounds like she's gotten her new Bengalified life figured out... *grin*

At 09:44 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

HEY! The comments are back! Cool.

Lear, big happy kitty, woke me really early this morning. Can't ignore the Bengal Head Butt.

Mistress, that's so cool about the Bengals and your friend. WHO lets one out tho?? They ain't cheap.

At 09:47 Blogger spacedlaw said...

No but maybe he was too much of a handful and so the owner might have let it "escape".

At 09:52 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

That's very sad. Obviously they don't read my blog and obviously they didn't do their homework and read up on the breed first.

Emily, I wouldn't just get rid of Lear and Mab, but if I found the right home for them, I would let them go. If Adriene stopped touring, and was home, she would be a good home. It would have to be someone I knew, and was SURE understood what they were getting. They would need to come and stay with me a bit, so Lear and Mab could know them too.

At 13:37 Blogger dabbler said...

Hugs to Jess, and big worried face Lear, if he'd let me...he looks so much less anxious, though.

Good morning, Fiendom! It's one of those mornings in which I pick something up and look at it blankly for a minute (or two) before I get on with what I was doing.

Jess, that is so awful - of course you should be sad. I am, and I never knew her.

I just decided, on another subject, we all need to write our congresspeople and have them enact a federal law that anyone even thinking about getting a Bengal must read Q's blog. Or face very severe penalties, possibly involving the angry beehive.

Today's local weather forecast calls for "moderate" air quality, a high of 90 and Glenn Beck replacing Abe Lincoln in all Texas textbooks, even the math ones. Thank goodness the offspring has already been brainwashed here at home. Our rabbi told us that any teen who actually listens to NPR on her own is going to be okay.

Oh, and here's good news. The next North American Discworld Convention (complete with Sir Terry) is scheduled for July, 2011 in Madison, WI!!!!! (Pratchett fans note the exclamation marks - five of 'em!) Oh, boy. Some Fiends are BOUND to be there. Right? right? PLS? Last year's was a blast. We had a lot of our UK friends show up, and Terry said it was the best convention ever. AND Jennifer Brehl, who is VERY funny, bought me a chocolate martini. Woo! I can't believe she is the editor for Boss, Sir Terry AND Chris Moore. Amazing. She even dressed up in a cool costume for the final banquet.

Sorry. Will shut up now.

At 10:21 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Hi Fluffy! Picking something up and looking at it blankly... I hear ya.

Discworld?! With Sir Terry?!! In the state next door?!!! Hmmmm...

At 10:33 Blogger DataGoddess said...

OMG! Discworld in drivable distance! I'm so there!! OSS, Dan and I can pick you up in passing...

And how cool is it that my favorite 3 authors have the same editor. She must be one hell of an editor!!

I am on stronger pain killers than I usually am (can't take NSAIDs before surgery, because they can cause blood clotting issues) so my doc gave me some narcotic painkillers to get me through.

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

(fairly minor surgery on lady parts next week, nothing huge, but I will be put under. Don't like that part.)

At 10:40 Blogger Fluffy said...

Best of luck with the "procedure" Toni. And enjoy those meds in the meantime. I got some after my c-section and they came in very handy when I had less-than-helpful houseguests. I called them my Mother-In-Law Pills.

Woohoo! My friend Jon is the co-or-vice-chair of the con. He did all the artwork for the last one - he's an animator. It should be tres cool, not to mention a bucket of fun. You-all who are going to the Thing On The Rock will meet my friend Cara, who will be staying with Binky. She and I have bunked together on Pratchett-fan trips. She's very cool and teaches ESL in a college in Kansas. Ohboyohboyohboy.

I was going to go SCA camping this weekend, but now we're staying home. Which is fine with me, since I have GOBS of things to do, except that we're staying home because Nick was in an accident on Wednesday and is kind of battered. Nothing serious, just stiff and very sore. He was riding the bus, and it got clobbered by a pickup that ran a stop sign. All would have been well if he hadn't been standing up to get ready for his stop in half a block...

At 12:15 Blogger vampi said...

oh my! i'm glad it's not serious injury, but still scary.

At 12:23 Blogger ariandalen said...

Oh, Phiala! I'm glad Nick wasn't hurt any worse! Definitely a good reason to stay home. Hope he mends quickly, and that you get everything done you want to get done this weekend.

At 12:30 Blogger Marjorie said...

Eeek! Glad Nick is not badly hurt, but a nasty experience altogether - hope he feels less-shaky soon.

Discworld con sounds fun - especially if there are many fiends. What with that & HOTR you WI & surroundings people will have lots of fun..

This weekend I will mostly be not going to Bristol Comic & Small press Expo, becasue I left it too late and the tickets all sold out. *sigh*

I will stay home and experiment with cooking instead.

At 13:27 Blogger Jess said...

Phiala, yikes! Glad Nick is okay.

Marjorie, I won't be going anywhere either. Apart from grocery shopping. Sigh.

Have been talking to A Contractor, who lives just down the street from me. May get several things done this summer, possibly for an arm but hopefully not a leg. Woot!

At 14:32 Blogger dabbler said...

Sympathy to Nick...battered and bruised and sore is no fun. Here's to ice!

I'm all abut not going places this weekend. We'll see if I can pull it off.

And, hmmm...Discworld in Wisconsin in July 2011. Got to buy Sir Pterry a beer at Worldcon in Glasgow in 2005. Might be time again.

There will be a nap later today.

At 11:01 Blogger Jess said...

Today is a good day for naps. It's all rainy and that.

Yesterday my Dad built a partition wall. It's only a small partition, for plumbing, and will be hidden when everything's done (sometime in 2025, the way my luck runs). In theory it should have taken him an hour, but took most of the day in fact, because nothing ever lines up squarely in my house. It's all askew. It's a Rhomboid House of Skew.

I'd say that you had to be here, and it's all very interesting really, but Mr. Jess would disagree. So let's just say I'm yammering, and leave it at that.

(Mr. Jess keeps asking, by the way, when all the Fiends are planning to go back to Stillwater...)

Today is for planting the plants I bought 2+ weeks ago and discovering that I have many more plants than planters. Also finding that my clever plan to have the teens+ in my house dig holes and put the dirt in my trashpicked kiddy pools (read, raised garden beds) has failed utterly.

Well, the planters are done, at least. Off to the antique book and ephemera show, where I plan to look but not buy. Really.

Tomorrow we go see a local repertory company production of Gossamer...a totally wonderful Lois Lowry children's book. we managed to sneak in teckets for the very lastyt performance.

Rock and Ride on, Q! Any what a productive bunch we are.

Jess-am so WITH you on the rooms askew stuff. Houses built in 1970 in NM also have ... interesting ... dimensions. :)

Ticia--sadly, it doesn't appear that the folks I wanted you to meet are going to be there; another very cool and friendly chica is only going to visit today (though she recommends the seminar on lock-picking!) Looks like the people-matching is a fail this time.

At 17:04 Blogger Marjorie said...

All these irregular angled homes! The house I grew up in was like that - not a straight edge, rightangled corner or level surface to be found, but it did have the excuse it was 200+ years old & had no foundations... My present home is fairly predictable, except in the areas where the previous owners practises their (non existant) DIY skills. But hey, who needs cupboards to open the whole way? It just encourages you to put stuff in them..

At 17:26 Blogger Phiala said...

Nick and I are both fairly competent at DIY stuff - I can put up, tape and spackle wallboard, shingle a roof, and do basic plumbing repairs.

All I was planning to do today was put track shelving along one wall. Three-hour job, tops.

Hah!

Turns out this interior wall was once an exterior wall, and the studs are all in odd places or nonexistent due to doors and windows formerly being present.

So I ran out to get a stud sensor. Which doesn't work on our wall. Or rather, it works on every wall in the house except the ones to which I'd like to attach things.

At 17:29 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

I have shelves.

They have no books on them because I bought the wrong-size brackets this morning. Tomorrow I will exchange them for the right ones and put books on them.

And other stuff.

And I am very very tired. Just so you know.

Did you know that houses, and other buildings, deteriorate faster when no
one lives in/uses them? 'Tis true.

::sigh:: For the third Saturday in a row, Don has left the alarm clock on. This means I wake up at 5:26 am for no reason. I even moved the covers, sat up in bed, and almost got out of bed this morning before realizing it was Saturday and I didn't have to get the girls out of bed for school.

Welcome back home! Fiends make **Everything** better. Did you do the (early) Birthday song for Aleta?

At 01:39 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

AH, no, missed it was nearly Aletas B'day!

Venus was chasing something odd and when I went to look, discovered it was a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup. WHERE she aquired this, I have no clue, haven't bought one in a LONG time, and would have thought, had I bought one, I might have eaten it..

At 01:40 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

And why exactly was she chasing it? I mean, they aren't generally aggressive, are they?

At 03:18 Blogger spacedlaw said...

They can be fairly taunting, though.
Cheeky, even.

At 04:33 Blogger Marjorie said...

Tybalt hunted and killed a ball-point pen, this morning. Not sure whether it started out on the floor, or whether he was first On The Table Where He Is Not Allowed.

At 08:29 Blogger Ticia said...

Marjorie, Marjorie, Marjorie... "The table where he is not allowed" had me rolling on the floor.

Cat's House, Cat's Rules.

I'm impressed that he stays off it while you're around...

He's obviously up to something...

Quiche - I'm glad last night rocked.

At 10:11 Blogger Jess said...

Well, hey, I would chase a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. Just sayin'.

Yay rock!!

So a squirrel came zooming out from under our porch this morning-- which is nothing unusual in itself. The unusual bit was when Mr. Jess turned to me and said, "You can train them with peanuts."

Have to say that squirrel training is not among my ambitions.

At 10:31 Blogger vampi said...

maybe your angry bee box was having a nic fit?

bees attracted to nicotine and caffiene

At 14:20 Blogger Marjorie said...

Jess, what does Mr Jess want to train the squirrels to do?

At 14:51 Blogger vampi said...

that would be telling

At 15:13 Blogger Jess said...

Marjorie: dunno. To take letters to the post office? Might be useful.

At 16:21 Blogger Marjorie said...

Perhaps you should investigate. After all, how does he know they can be trained, unless he has tried? And yet he has, until now, said nothing. Perhaps he already has secret squads of ninja squirrels poised to obey his every command...

Plus, if the TV ads are to believed, small woodland animals are good at housework and washing up, which would come in handy.

Um

I'm feeling a little tired. Maybe I should shut up & go to bed now.

At 17:50 Blogger Dragonsally said...

So, how many peanut trained ninja squirrels has Mr Jess sekretly trained and stationed under your house?

Do they find the fabled missing socks perhaps? Gather nectar for addicted beeses?

And could he send one to me? I could handle a squirrel trained to feed the cat in the small hours of the morning so she doesn't wake me.

At 18:01 Blogger Fluffy said...

I have secret squads of ninja squirrels living in my attic. And moles in the yard. And grey foxes, which I hope might reduce the rodent population. The foxes poop all over the place. I decided that if the moles persist, I'm going to start dropping the fox scat down their holes. A hint that other nearby yards might be less fox-poopy.

I had a Nanny Ogg moment last night at supper club. There was an apparently interesting conversation happening at the other end of the table, because in a lull, one of the ladies said quite clearly, "Well, they make great sex toys," to which I added, "So very many things do." I think it's a mild form of Tourette's. Or possibly the Gin Rickeys.

At 18:11 Blogger Jess said...

There's not a secret squirrel army under the house. I'd know about them. I go into the basement more often than he does.

At 18:32 Blogger Dragonsally said...

oh dear, my poor little brain was scrambled then trying to imagine ninja squirrels as sex toys...bad Sally.

Well Jess, I am disappointed for you. The idea had so much potential.

At 18:45 Blogger Phiala said...

Oh my dear fiends, I am very tired. But I have dug a new bed and planted things in it, and built bookshelves and filled them with books, and weeded, and dyed things, and done piles and piles of laundry.

I have not done everything that was supposed to be done this weekend, but I may have done as much as humanly possible.

At 19:01 Blogger Fluffy said...

"I have not done everything that was supposed to be done this weekend, but I may have done as much as humanly possible."

At 23:13 Blogger Ms T said...

Today's fun work conversation (apologies to Monty Python):

Ms T: What's a disquisition?
Boss: A forcefully delivered speech, usually longish.
Ms T: OK, this one is short, but I can imagine it was forcefully delivered.
Boss: Yep. Think of an inquisition but with a speech instead of questions.
[pause]
Ms T: So...no one expects the Spanish Disquisition?
Boss: *headdesk*

Happy beginning of the work week fiends!

At 23:34 Blogger spacedlaw said...

That's a great moment, Fluffy.

Been watching Hoarders this evening. Not sure that makes me feel superior to anyone watching Lost...

But I do have this to say: If the Hoarder film crew is AT YOUR HOUSE FILMING, your house is not "Kind of cluttered" or "A bit messy" and yes, it really DOES have way too much stuff.

At 00:07 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

(And why is Mr Jess training squirrels again? Taking over the world?)

At 00:16 Blogger vampi said...

the real question is are the squirrels allies or foes?

At 00:28 Blogger Ms T said...

Vampi, having never actually encountered a squirrel (or fox or mole for that matter), beyond those I've seen in books, I couldn't possibly comment. :)

Sigh. Such exotic wildlife. Wetas just aren't quite as entertaining.

At 00:33 Blogger Jess said...

He isn't. He's just confident they can be trained with peanuts. And I have to admit, peanuts are pretty good. I like the honey roasted kind a lot.

At 01:02 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Ms T - that is perfect. I must try to remember not just the word, but its meaning...

and I'm with you on squirrels and moles sounding like something out of a book.

At 07:50 Blogger Hellie said...

There are definately ninja squirrels in Manchester - I used to watch them from the window of my old flat, they would regularly ambush the pigeons! They didn't seem to have a reason, just used to leap on them then run away laughing.

Mrs T, I liked the wetas when I visited! And the Keas are pretty entertaining!!

At 09:57 Blogger louisa said...

So Jess, does that mean we could train you with peanuts?

At 10:00 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Hard to imagine squirrels as exotic. I guess I assumed they managed to spread themselves everywhere.

My grandmother fed peanuts to the squirrels in her yard. If she was late bringing them out, one squirrel would scratch at her door. Who trained whom?

At 10:21 Blogger Jess said...

Louisa - Possibly. Just possibly.

At 10:57 Blogger Beez said...

Now I wonder if I will be able to get caffeinated honey for my tea.

Hullo Fiends, I miss you all. Currently working 3 actual real (ie: taxes taken out of paycheck) and 1 side landscaping gig (which does not) so I am here rarely.

....but there are squirrel sex toys! I miss so much!

Discworld Con in Madison? I want to go, especially since HoTR isn't financially do-able.

Money for winterizing house- bah!

What I REALLY want is to see the Drew pyro-dance pictures.

Towel day? Ooh bugger, I knew I forgot something this morning. And I could even have multitasked because I do have a lilac microfibre towel. :)

Actually, a towel wouldn't go amiss at the moment - it's persisting down outside. This morning's satorial choices came down to what would dry best once I got to work.

Hellie, glad the keas and wetas kept you entertained! That's NZ - big bugs and birds. Apparently when we split from Australia they got custody of the interesting marsupials and venomous thingies. I'm not sure who won out on that deal.

At 21:23 Blogger Dragonsally said...

I think you may have won on that custody battle Ms T. On balance, the interesting marsupials lose to the nasty bitey things.

missing my monsters, but sad to be leaving this lurvely, lurvely So Cal climate, and the family, fiends and assorted acquaintances wot live here.

also, saw a pelican up (very) close yesterday. cheeky bird.

and now for sleep - have to go to LAX in about six hours. :P oh carp! i haven't shoved my clothes back in the suitcase yet. i will click links and read more about squirrels taking over the world when i get back to that place i reside.

On what tho????

Found out my Roller Derby Team is coming to MN next April, but that seems early...

Any ideas on what to write about????

At 11:37 Blogger Jess said...

Tell us about, um, about, er, a thing.

I can't even think what to put in this comment. I could gesture, but no one could see it; I could go "Bluh," but that doesn't mean anything. Either way, that's about the level of helpful I am today.

You hung out with the Shondes. Tell us about that. There was coffee, wasn't there? Sounded like something dangerous was about to happen. :D

(And why oh why oh why oh why will Blogger never take my comment login the first time? Argh.)

At 11:47 Blogger Martha W. said...

Tell us more about your garden and your yard, and maybe how you are surviving in the heat. I was very excited last night, taking control of the lawn mower and making the blade go as high as possible, so I wouldn't have a skinhead lawn for a change. It looks pretty good, lush without being disgracefully unmowed.

At 11:51 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Tell us a story.

At 11:55 Blogger Fluffy said...

Jess, I have found that Blogger will always take my comment login if I copy the comment first. Just a little insurance.

Lorraine - is anything blooming in yer yard? Anything... purple?

At 11:56 Blogger Fluffy said...

Skinhead lawns. Very scary thought. Brrr.

At 12:17 Blogger Jess said...

It always takes my comment the second go, and rarely loses the text, actually. It just always comes up with a little error message the first time I try to post, if I'm not logged in. Could log in first, but what a faff. Though it's a faff either way. But still.

A story! Once upon a time, there was an Assistant, climbing a towering mountain of email. Then the phone began to ring.

What? It's Realism.

At 13:07 Blogger Fluffy said...

Oooooh, realism. Scary. I just got off the phone with the insurance company! Wooowoooooooooo... I was redirected three times and misdirected once. Only took 20 minutes to do something simple.

Now I need to do the medical questionnaire for Insurance Company Number Two. We have been playing phone-not-tag for three days at this point. They were sposed to call at 9 am...

At 13:18 Blogger Marjorie said...

Jess, I find that a lot with Blogger, too. I think it just does it for attention.

Q, I think a Shondees blog would be good, or more garden & cats and dogs. Those are always good.

Does anyone know a good way to discourage ants? I have some in the hallway and have no anti-ant stuff in the house. I really don't like ants. At all.

At 13:29 Blogger Fluffy said...

I generally use diatomaceous earth, but it's not exactly a household item.

At 13:56 Blogger Beez said...

Ground cinnamon. Ants hate walking over it. I usually lay some around doors and windows in the summer when the ants population gets restless for a taste of indoor living- the house smells nice too.

If it's outside and gets wet (rain, oh rain) you need to reapply it, but hey, you have to do that with diatomaceous earth too.

At 14:01 Blogger dabbler said...

Cool. i have just noticed ants in my kitchen this morning (a yearly occurrence) and hate having poison around. Love cinnamon, though, and have lots. I shall experiment.

At 14:09 Blogger Marjorie said...

Ooh, thankyou, Beez, I have cinnamon. (well, it's actually mixed spice, but more cinnamon than anything else) I shall try that.

There aren't masses of them, but I have a near phobia about ants - I can bear it if they stay outside, but in the house I start to freak, so anything that discourages them is good. Especially when it smells nice, too.

At 14:09 Blogger Chantrelle said...

Peppermint oil works against ants too. And makes your house smell like a big candy cane. It's less messy than cinnamon. I've taken a cotton ball or qtip, soaked it with some peppermint oil and then run it along the baseboards or whereever they're getting in.

At 18:57 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Is the fountain for outside, or the cats?

You know, there are times when I regret buying a front loading washing machine...like when you realize you've forgotten to put something in, and you can't add it to the wash because the water level is too high. *grumble grumble*
yeah, I know its more gentle on the clothes and uses much less water but...
