Mostly Mim's Pee....

I feel kind of bad about that last Tweet saying I was the poster child for YOU DON'T WANT ONE OF THESE CATS! So I thought I ought to take some pictures and talk about how wonderful they are for a bit.

Because they really are. As long as you understand what you are getting.

Mim is having Pee Issues. Only it seems, on ME now, tho. I don't know what's up. I am the expert. She's not sick, been to the vet. We go for leash walks, she has a cat wheel we play on, LOTS of toys. It started pre-Magic being out, tho it does happen MORE now. Daily in fact.

She seems ok with him. She likes her food. She gets as much as she wants to eat. She has access to SEVEN litter boxes in different parts of her territory. All cleaned daily, with unscented litter. I hide little balls of tin foil all over and buy her Mousies. I give her attention.

And love.

I have Feliway diffusers and spray. Anti-icky-poo to clean up the pee. She's peeing on me every night. Beyond me. There is a calming collar one can get, which works like the Feliway, mimicking the pheromones of a Happy Contented Kitty. May try it. She has two Screamed Porches now, and a fountain. Six Cat Trees. And curtains to climb.

And I really love her.

I love them all, even if five Bengals is too many. The Royals have come so far, I haven't done as many pics with them, mostly as they are harder to shoot. King Lear the Huge comes up in the bed with me for what are nearly cuddles now, and both of them LOVE when I take baths. Queen Mab is so shy, and so sweet, but braver than Lear.

I do kind of wish they had their OWN person, and if the right person came along, I would let them go. Be hard, but if they had their ONE who loved them like I do, it would be worth it.

They have so much love to give.

Bengals are really smart. They are highly active. They are beyond funny. And they communicate at almost an eerie level. I think Mim is trying to tell me something. I don't get it yet tho. I know she wants out, and am building an outdoor cat area for her.

They have hearts that will bond with YOU, and only you.

There is nothing like having one trust you, especially one that's never trusted before.

You've never known that love, maybe.

And so ends another episode of Living With Leopards.

Love and Mim's Pee,
Lorraine

this is probably a stupid question but is she trying to tell the others something and not you? is she trying to let them know that you are hers?

Sure hope the Mystery of the Pee is solved soon. For all of your sakes!

At 22:12 Blogger DataGoddess said...

I hope you figure out what she's trying to say, or she finds a better way to communicate besides pee!

At 22:13 Blogger Jane said...

Pee with love, that is a new one.

We love our Abyssinians, They're not Bengals, but they seem to share a lot of the same characteristics. They're so smart and when they bond with you, there is definitely a feeling of being "chosen".

But along with the wonderfulness comes the OMG the cat is ALWAYS in my face and what the hell does he/she want NOW? There is the down side (not to say the dark side) and if you don't want that type of cat it's good to know going in and steer clear.

So IMO poster girl for you don't want these cats may not be a bad thing. It may help to prevent bad choices and unwanted pets.

And we get our new Abys in 2 weeks. Wonder how they're going to be?

At 22:14 Blogger One Sock Short said...

That last picture is especially good. Venus and Magic on the couch (I think), watching a silhouette of Mim (I think) go by.

Very odd sort of pee issue. Not one I've heard of before. I hope you find a solution soon.

The last couple of days have been exhausting, as I've been attending a local conference. No travel, and everything in one hotel, and yet I'm wiped. This does not bode well for going to ALA in D.C. in two weeks. That will be all meetings, all day, *and* schlepping around D.C. I may just collapse at this rate. A good wake-up-call for me to focus on the FIT, I guess. Today I spent much of the day sitting next to a Library Rock Star. I tried very hard not to be an idiot, but I'm not sure if I succeeded.

On the bright side, I had the first class in the Graphic Novel seminar to go to tonight. This is the same one that has been canceled twice before for lack of people signing up. I'm glad it finally got off the ground. It should be a good seminar.

To bed with me now. I've another day of this conference to get through tomorrow.

Hope everyone is well, or soon will be if currently ailing.

And tick, because for some reason, Blogger is not letting me tick the first time.

At 22:17 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh, do let me know if the collar works. I have peeing issues also and one who sprays. {so he stays outside cause he's little Hitler with the others}

I'm sad. The Vet and I are pretty certain my Spook kitty has cancer :( They did biopsy today and we'll know in a few days.

Dimle. Dim. What the heck did you name him?

Want pictures of him with his pretty summer coat.

Sometime. When you get to it?

At 22:30 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

You may be right Turtle, at that.

OSS got it in one, Venus and Magic on the couch with Mim walking by.

Vin, that's very sad about Spook, been thru that, no fun. AT least Spook has YOU.

There is a very much feeling of WHAT DO YOU WANT NOW?? They aren't interested in leaving you alone, they want to do what your're doing, or they want you to do something fun with them. All the time. If that's not what you want, this isn't the breed for you.

Beez, I am not even dignifying that with a remark. Laughing, yes, remarking, NO.

At 22:34 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Oh Vin, that is tough...fingers crossed things work out.

At 22:34 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

your bengals have some kinky fetishes :D

At 22:41 Blogger Jess said...

I think turtle's on to something, there, too. Mim sounds like she means to tell everyone else who's King. You put your smelliest smell on the food-getter and cuddle-giver, that makes you King in cat terms.

I dunno how you get around that. Cats don't establish a pack order like dogs. If Mim's decided she's King, that's it-- unless someone argues with her. You prevent the argument by washing off the smell, so she keeps trying. Makes sense, from her point of view.

Might be useful to try to establish when she decides to put her mark on you-- like after Venus or magic rubs you, or after you've been upstairs. There may be something there that triggers it.

Poor Spook. :(

At 23:27 Blogger spacedlaw said...

She's out for your attention, I think but for what? Maybe she needs more you time?

At 23:28 Blogger Ms T said...

I don't think I quite knew what I was getting into with my Aby-cross (or cross-Aby if I'm not doing what he wants me to do), but I can't imagine having any other cat now. Besides, he's finally got me well-trained. :)

He's very affectionate, but definitely not a lap cat. More a lap-shoulder-table-other shoulder-draped across your chest-then back down to your lap to writhe in ecstasy cat! How could I resist?

My goodness you are thorough! As you were describing Mim's behavior I started assembling a list of potential causes. But as I read through you covered every one of them - except one. :) It may not be the most likely, but I'll offer it FWIW.

Clearly the most obvious cause for peeing on you is that she's communicating a health issue. (Even if she's testing healthy, keep an eye on her weight, just in case). But if the vet has given her a clean bill of health, move to emotions. Especially with these!

It could be she's marking territory, claiming you. But it could also be insecurity or nerves. Pee is a very powerful communication tool for a feline. Could she be anxious? Or mad that you went camping? My mother had a siamese that bonded closely with her. She was a flight attendant and constantly on the go. Meese used to get so mad at her for leaving she'd pee in my mom's suitcase! Then, when she came back, she'd pee on my mom's pillow. Half the time with my mom on the pillow - just so she had NO doubt that Meese was miffed. But also anxious. That was her person, and it was hard on Meese when she left.

So that's my offering, FWIW. If it's an anxiety issue, the calming collar may do the trick. Lord knows, it seems you've tried everything else! Best of luck, please keep us updated.

At 01:59 Blogger Frounette said...

Peeing is marking of territory, right? It sounds like she's making sure that you and the other cats know that you are primarily all hers - her very own human first and foremost that the other cats can maybe borrow occasionally.

At 05:03 Blogger Precision Grace said...

Um, I am no Bengal expert but I do know about cats.
Have you considered the possibility that Mim is just being a spoiled little madam? Have you told her off for peeing on you (nicely)? , i.e. when she is about to do it, say "Mim, stop it, that's very rude, we must not pee outside the litter box." and take her to a litter box and say "naughty girl! mummy is going to be very cross if you carry on doing this." (and mean it)

Another Crazy Cat Lady.

PS. Yes, I do talk to my cats like that. They are superbly intelligent and we have conversations. They will occasionally try and be difficult because...they are cats and it's what they do.

At 06:31 Blogger LihuaEmilyP said...

Did you just say you have time to clean SEVEN litter boxes?!

At 06:37 Blogger Phiala said...

Hugs and scritches for Vin and Spook. :(

Lorraine, you make me want to move to MN and adopt the Royals. Even with the pee options.

At 08:30 Blogger Phiala said...

The good part: Nick is going away for a long weekend. We have houseguests tonight, but they're leaving late morning Saturday, then he's leaving, then I have the house to myself until Tuesday!!! I so rarely have large chunks of time to myself.

I'm going to move the iMac into the living room and spend the whole weekend writing.

Which turns out to be absolutely essential, because my mother has decided to use up her use or lose vacation time by coming to visit for a week or so, and she thinks I need to go to Connecticut for a few days with her. Which would be fun, and I'd love to have her visit, but oh Fods the deadlines!

This means I have until the 19th to get everything done, instead of the end of the month for most of it. Panicking just a bit. Okay, a lot.

At 08:42 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Thanks Lisa, and Frounette, and all. I may take her to the vet again as somthign that didn't show six months ago might now.

But I rather think anxiety too.

I am trying to watch her more closely, and head it off. I've ordered more feather sticks, they love those. I think a puzzle box too, so she has to work to get trats out, anything to keep her DOING things.

She's just a high strung Bengal.

This may be TMI but she is RIGHT there, comes running , when I go to the bathroom. Jumps on the sink, MEWS, rubs...

At 09:02 Blogger DataGoddess said...

Hmm, maybe she's marking you because you now smell like 3 dogs (I can't remember, did her peeing on you start before or after Lola's arrival at Boss's house?) or maybe because Magic is rolling in/on your clothes (the bra picture comes to mind) and you smell too much like him?

Just random things that popped into what passes for my brain :-)

Was trying to decide how I was going to Garden with Beez today and ride at the same time, ride my horsie with Bucking Jen.

The weather forecast is helping this amazingly:

"Possibly hail, damaging winds and tornadoes"

OK!!!!!

Gardening it is, riding wouldn't be safe in hail, damaging winds and tornadoes..

I kid. But I may be inside getting some WORK done.

At 11:42 Blogger Chantrelle said...

Wow, I'm having a hard time dealing w/ our cat peeing in the garage! And that's just because he's old. I'm pretty positive I am not a Bengal person!

Great pictures though, wow!

Speaking of wow...Ben's school play. Holy shit people. This is a huge thing! I'd never made it to it in previous years before he started school. They do the same play every year, the indian story of the Ramayana. An epic, old tale. The first act has the little kids in it. It's well done and they get all the kids involved and it's great. The 2nd act they step it up about 10 notches. There are battles and giants and dragons and ... good lord! It's like a broadway production or something! They've been doing this for 32 years. The guy that directs has been directing for 28. Someone needs to do a 60 minutes (or whoever does this stuff now) story on this thing. It's amazing how they pull the 200 3-18 yr olds into this 4 day run and pull it all off. They just got the sets and costumes to the theatre Monday. Last night was the first show. All I could come up with last night was, "wow".

At 13:46 Blogger Unknown said...

Talked to our vet when we had pee issues a couple of years ago, a year after we added two kittens to our four cat household. We all speculated that five might be a tipping point as far as the politics in a multicat household is concerned. We subsequently found a new home for the kittens and the peeing issues dried up. Just last year a new kitten adopted us bringing our cat population back up to five. Although she terrorizes the other cats with her boundless energy, so far so good on the inappropriate elimination front. We hold our breath...

Good morning!

One batch of houseguests is gone. Nick and the other houseguest will be leaving shortly and not coming back until Tuesday! I'm very excited to get the house to myself. In fact, I'm so excited that I think this is the second time I've told you about it.

Writing weekend: there's plenty of coffee, the fridge is full of leftover Chinese from last night, I have a Plan. And it's supposed to rain.

Old dogs are ridiculously expensive, just so you know. Mine needed bloodwork, and new drugs for his recurring ear infection, and and and.

I have had coffee and no breakfast, which may not have been such a good plan based on my enthusiastic babbling.

At 08:22 Blogger Fluffy said...

Hey - breakfast! Good idea! Then I can go outside and plant some valuable stuff.

And I love Lorraine's inspiring words: "No one has peed on me!!!!!" Sounds like a good way to start each day.

At 08:27 Blogger Fluffy said...

And I have a Miele upright vacuum cleaner. I like it because I can still use it if I have a headache, since you can adjust the power down to "Really Quiet." Which is a plus if you get bad headaches frequently (as I used to,) and also dislike cruddy floors.

It wasn't hideously expensive like their canister vacs, but the new ones are much bigger and fancier and - you guessed it - more offensive (as R used to say.)

I would like to hear about relatively quiet machines that work well, if anyone knows about that stuff.

At 16:38 Blogger Jane said...

At 17:07 Blogger Jane said...

Ah yes, Jess :-) I did.

I really did wonder if I just couldn't see the posts...

Back to eye Dr (he came in on a Sat afternoon to look at eye) because the eye that had the laser surgery a couple of weeks ago was doing something odd, well, more of the same but bigger and shinier. He took a good look and pronounced it all fine.

I'm relived. It's just so odd to have such shiny roiling lights in one's eye, esp when they get bigger and roilier and I thought they were supposed to be getting less...

Saw a woman with her Bengal at the Phoenix Pet Expo today. She was carrying the cat. Those guys are BIG.

Cat seemed totally unconcerned with the activity, the thousands of dogs, all the people staring and cooing. Seemed like such a contrast with your babies.

I'm kicking myself that I didn't ask what generation it was. Looked a lot like this kitty, tho:

On top of spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
I lost my poor meatball,
When somebody sneezed.

It rolled off the table,
And on to the floor,
And then my poor meatball,
Rolled out of the door.

It rolled in the garden,
And under a bush,
And then my poor meatball,
Was nothing but mush.

The mush was as tasty
As tasty could be,
And then the next summer,
It grew into a tree.

The tree was all covered,
All covered with moss,
And on it grew meatballs,
And tomato sauce.

So if you eat spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
Hold on to your meatball,
Whenever you sneeze.

he used to run my department, but eventually left/was pushed out because he lacked management skills. how he got promoted to be director over even more people, i do not know.
we are completely restructuring the company, which i understand, but we are doing it in a rushed half-assed way which really irritates me.

I think it's awesome you got it, Phiala. I reckoned you would. :D

Though I forgot to actually tick the ticky boxy thingie.

Ratus

It's the heat, getting to me. All of 26 C / 78 F. :P

I feel the desire to thoughtfully comment on so much, but all I see when typing here is "peeing with love" (*snort*) and I am shambling. Should work some more tonight, but teh brainz, dey is oozin'.

Wishing you all exactly the kind of weather you like and working connections, and may your favourite team do well in a World Cup game soon.

At 22:26 Blogger vampi said...

oh maybe you should explain to mim the concept of "showering with love" does not usually involve pee, and take away her internet access.

At 22:27 Blogger Na said...

oh vampi!!!! sorry to be late wishing you a happy firbday! happy firbday WEEK then.

and sorry you've a dunderhead for a boss. :( I really hope things shape up at work, somehow, and hope you're feeling better, too. *hugs*

So Na... oh, I just got it...TICK!

Its Monday afternoon here. We have a long weekend to celebrate her Maj's birthday. It is the opening of the ski season - which means many people have got very very drunk.
I am cooking curry.
Oh -and the sun is out. Its the sunniest day we've had for a while, which is just loverley.

At 22:35 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Well damn. The sun just went behind a huge cloud.

At 03:27 Blogger Marjorie said...

wait, what - Sally gets a bank holiday for her Maj's offcial birthday and we don't? How is that fair?

I did end up watching part of the Trooping of the Coulor on saturday, as I channell-hopped looking for something -magnificantly pointless, and the commnetary was hilarious.

My faviourite part was when the guy commentating said (in the slightly hushed tones they keep for this type of occassion) "And the [military bloke of some kind] informs the Queen that the troops have passed.." What? You don't think she'd notived that a couple of hundred solderoes in bright red have gone past her? I mean, I know that Royalty isn't famed for it's inteligence, but that'd be kind of hard to miss, don't you think?

Also, the drum horses apparently hold the rank of 'Major'.

Nope, makes no sense to me either.

Gah. And no it is Monday morning again. *sigh*

At 03:43 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Well, she is our Maj too.
And don't forget we also get a Public Holiday for a little old horse race.
You should ALL live here, see.

At 04:17 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Maybe your M is a trifle distracted?
She is supposed to have loftier things on her mind after all. Like: CAKE (it was her birthday, wasn't it?)

At 06:41 Blogger LihuaEmilyP said...

Sorry to hear about the new boss, Vampi. And I do hope you had a great birthday.

So happy Monday morning, Fiends, or Monday evening etc. I couldn't sleep last night because I was thinking about the two Doctor Who episodes I had watched online yesterday ... seeing as I, as an American, was THREE EPISODES BEHIND, I had to catch up quickly, so ...

At 08:37 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Big morning here today. First lesson with my new trainer on Dim. She is going to KICK MY ASS. I am sure of it.

No problems with Mel, she's just so busy and things are in flux for her, and I need help with this horse. Serious help.

We'll have a lovely blog about it later.

If I survive.

At 09:51 Blogger LihuaEmilyP said...

Keep on keepin' on, Quiche.

At 09:56 Blogger Jess said...

Sit back! Sit up! Dig your heels in! Point the horse forward! Erm.

Marjorie - Perhaps HM thought there would be more. No, Ma'am. That's all the troops we have. There aren't any more.

I am reminded: I had one of those moments the other week where I was ashamed before my extended family to be American. We were in a restaurant. (Great Italian place downtown, used to be a brothel. The Madam's headboard is the back of the bar now. It's like twenty feet long. Fantastic.) There was this waiter. He's always our waiter when we go there. Nice guy, but a Regular wind-up merchant. If he hears an accent, any accent, he'll ask if you're from the South Side of town. Mr. Jess goes to this place a lot, so he gets asked that a lot.

So we're in there with the in-laws. They're all from the South Side. Ha ha! Waiter starts asking about who's in charge over-there-in-your-neck-of-the-woods, with that weird election where no one won, and also about HM The Queen-- whether she has any real decision-making power, that kind of thing. My poor mother-in-law tries to explain that HM doesn't make the decisions, but she advises the PM on matters of State: she's the one who's read every statute and bill and act and what-have-you. She has the power of knowledge, my mother-in-law tries to tell Waiter, but Waiter isn't listening: he's on to the punch line already, which is that The Queen does nothing! Ha ha! What does she do? Nothing! You Brits! Crazy!

You Brits, he keeps saying. I'm trying to slide under the table without looking like I'm trying to slide under the table at this point.

And I love all those British comedies! he goes. Are You Being Served, n'at one where dere's that retired lady, and she's married to that guy, and she's always worried about what the neighbors think, and he just sits there and sighs and watches TV. Funny! Crazy! You Brits!

I don't think my family minded any of this, actually. I think they were just amused. But I wanted to crawl into a hole and die.

Funny! Crazy! Maybe you had to be there. :P

At 10:26 Blogger Precision Grace said...

Jess that's hilarious!

FYI, there are people like that ALL over the world. Promise you. Yes, even over here. (especially over here)

Also, as I'm a naturalised Brit myself, I can confirm that the land of beyond also contains crazy waiters although where I come from they are French derived and consequently snooty, patronising, unhelpful and rude. And that's the nice ones.

Akshully, I am so over England. Or maybe it's just Cambridge, but I'm sick to my eyeballs of surly, grumpy, people. Although, having said that, today I was in town and came across two Cambridge students dressed in the 'uniform' (light coloured jackets, shorts, stripy ties, flip flops and straw hats) and it made me grumpy too. I was all like "Gah, such a cliche, so sick of you preppy horsey faced toffy nosed clown costume wearing idjits, hope you choke on your silver spoon and die" when I checked myself and thought..if I was just a tourist, I would have found the sight of this totally wonderful.

I need to be a new person in town again ..

At 10:29 Blogger Arwenn said...

I'd totally be trying to blend into the wallpaper through the sheer force of my will! If I've recommended a restaurant or something I feel personally responsible for weird waiters etc.

At 10:43 Blogger LihuaEmilyP said...

Like OUCH, Jess.

At 10:45 Blogger Jess said...

PG - I felt that about Cambridge after a while-- though that could have been something to do with having had too many miserable and ultimately fruitless job interviews. :) Still love it there, but it can be very hard to find a way to belong there. It's easier to be a tourist in a university town. Or a student.

Arwenn - I think they've come to expect it, which just makes it worse. I hate knowing that we'll always live down to their expectations. :D

At 11:14 Blogger Arwenn said...

I believe that robot waiters might be a solution to this problem.

Monkey butlers just never caught on and penguins are too short.

At 11:18 Blogger Jess said...

Hahaha!

"Monkey Butlers" would be a good name for a band, provided the band had an accordion player.

At 11:45 Blogger Precision Grace said...

Jess - you lived here!? Glad you got away :) It's so hard to find a decent job around here (unless you have at least couple of postgrad degrees)

In other news, the injured bird I rescued from Louie this morning and thought had flown away was found gasping in shock. I phoned RPSCA who told me which vet to take it to, but by the time I got off the phone the bird had died. I feel *SO* guilty. I should have taken it straight to vet this morning. Ended up cradling it in my arms wrapped in the blanket trying to give it CPR.
Wish I knew what kind it was, never really seen it before (bright red beak, eyes, feet, mottled brown feathers)

So sad :(

At 11:57 Blogger Precision Grace said...

I think the bird was a red legged partridge.
That's a game bird I think which doesn't make it less upsetting.

At 13:24 Blogger LihuaEmilyP said...

Grace, I don't know if it's okay to ask - but how is your story abotu Casey coming along? I was just wondering.

At 14:55 Blogger Precision Grace said...

Oh of course it's OK to ask! It's finished! I just forgot to mention on here. Please read and let me know what you think http://precisiongrace.blogspot.com/ (I've changed the look of the blog, don't let that confuse you).

Thanks for remembering! xx

so i have a dumb honey question.

i bought some of that honey withe the comb still in from trader joes, and i put some in my tea. i tried to avoid the comb bit for now, but i still got some in. now i have bits of wax floating in my tea. what is the proper way to do this? the wax on top of the tea is unappealing looking, but doesn't seem to affect the taste.

At 17:11 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

If you put comb honey in your tea, you will have wax. You can strain it thru cheese cloth (what we in the biz call "Extraction") or you can drink the floating wax.

Your call. Heehee.

OH! Before I forget, new post is up all about riding today and my first lesson with my new trainer!

At 19:02 Blogger Jess said...

PG - I was in St. Ives (the one by Huntingdon) for 18 months, and Darkest Lincolnshire for about a year before that. It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one who had trouble finding work down in Cambridge-- I could never figure out what I was doing wrong.

New post ahoy! I shall go to there.

*exeunt*

Jess, you were probably being funny and upbeat. They don't like that sort of thing 'round these parts. ;)
