A New Way of Thinking About Riding...

I wanted to do a horse blog today, as we haven't much talked about Dim lately. Yes, I do know that is not a horse. That's a Bengal. F2 Bengal, King Lear the Huge in fact, but I know how you are about pictures and I knew you would be yowling for some of Dim, but I haven't any.

This picture of King Lear the Huge is meant to distract you from the lack of horsie pictures.

I am working with a new trainer as of today. Teacher might be a better word, as that's what she does for me. I think I wrote on her once and called her "She Who Owns It All", or Poetry for short, as that what she and whatever horse she is on look like when they ride.

There is nothing, mind you, wrong with Hoursetrainer Mel, we are still BFF's and still ride and work together, but she is very busy right now, and hasn't the time to work with me as much as I need, if I am going to be able to ride Dim. I don't know enough, or rather, I know enough to KNOW I don't know enough.

And the reason you haven't pictures of my lesson today is there is not time for pictures in a lesson like this. I am listening. Every second. In fact, I don't even think of you during a lesson. Or work. Or anything. Except what she tells me, what I am doing, and the horse.

It's pretty darn cool.

To say I learned a lot doesn't even begin to cover it.

I can't tell you WHAT exactly. It doesn't come out well on paper. (Or my screen, I guess we say now.)

To say: "Well now, I stood behind her while my horse went in circles, and she talked to him and sometimes to me, then she rode him and then I spent 10 minutes on his back walking mostly and trotting a couple times, while she told me things."

Would be like describing my Irish show as: "Well now, Paul and I play some songs and sometimes we speak to you and you wave your arms about, or yell: Right up your Kilt"

See? Doesn't work. Loses something in the translation.

I can tell you, now, that riding is art, the same way music, dance, painting or writing is art.

It's communication, it's ideas, it's subtle, it's physical. It's thinking on ten things at once, and missing twenty of them. It's learning one brilliant idea at a time, that makes so much sense you want to scream it to the world.

It's new and different and changing and frustrating and worth every second of every bit of sweat you put into it. Like all good art.

And like all great art, you do it because there is something in you that HAS to.

I want this. I have to.

And I am very happy.

Love and Riding,
Lorraine

You sound so happy and complete. The type of learning where there is only you and the learning is not always easy to find. I found it with yoga and didn't even know I had until a few years into the practice, then I got it!

Glad you've found it with the beloved horse.

I am so glad that you had a good ride/lesson! Go you.

poetry in motion... now i have that song floating around between my ears. (plenty of room to float around in there these days)

sounds like an awesome lesson. i need to get me a passionate hobby. you are so inspiring.

and i'm just drinking around the waxy floaters, but thanks for the advise. so in theory, when i'm done with the honey part, i can take the comb and spread it on host toast and just yum it up, right?

This makes me smile. I'm so happy for you!

And I did enjoy the Lear picture, too.:)

happy cat is very happy. :)

i'm so glad you're enjoying your horsie time. i've always wanted to ride a horse but there's that whole thing of, well, not really wanting to *learn* to ride a horse that gets in the way. so, i'm living vicariously through you in this (well, and in the being owned by many cats thing but lots of people do that).

Lovely!

I'm spending my last evening home alone by processing the rest of the CSA veggies so I have somewhere to put new ones tomorrow. Eating salad like it's going out of style. Blanched and froze a pile of spinach. Froze a bag full of stir-fry greens. Gave up on the turnip tops - they went in the compost. Most of the turnips are in the refrigerator still, but they will keep.

This veggie thing is hard work!

At 17:59 Blogger Linda said...

King Lear appears to be smiling that joyful kind of smile. One probably like the one you have at the end of your lessons.

Doing something you love is art ~ bliss.

At 18:00 Blogger Dragonsally said...

I've got the song stuck in my head too Vampi.

You've written about this so beautifully Lorraine. Having something you love that makes the rest of the world disappear is so,so wonderful.

the video of the old dancing competition is hilarious. i totally want one of those twirlie skirts:D can you have twirlie kilts? i guess that could be a bit revealing.

At 19:13 Blogger Jess said...

Yowl yowl yowl! Put a saddle on that cat! Charge neighborhood children for rides. Profit! Then retire to Antigua.

That's the best way to learn: in the zone. It is a mighty fine place to be.

Eww, waxy floaters. You could chase them around the cup with the corner of a paper towel, Vampi, but you might soak up half your tea in the process.

At 19:15 Blogger Uisge said...

Yay for riding. Yay for Happy Lear.

At 19:21 Blogger AletaMay said...

This is a wonderful post.

I am sort of glad that there are not horse photos because this allows my imagination to capture the notion of poetry in motion and the image of FabLo in the zone in my own happy way.

Those are the moments, I think, that we live for.

At 19:44 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Lear IS smiling, he purrs now too, which also makes me happy.

It is art and bliss and joy when you find something that takes you away from everything, that you have to work at, where time stops, and you are simply THERE.

That's the kind of riding it was today.

Poetry in Motion. Very, very good description. We can now refer to my Teacher as PIM, which is kind of nice. And then that song can get stuck in your heads when ever I talk about her.

hee hee.

At 20:59 Blogger Ticia said...

Such joy and beauty all around. I think the picture of Lear captures the mood of the day.

Magical.

Lovely horsey post and lovely pic of Lear (to whom I administered remote under chin scritches).

Sleepless in nowhere very exciting.

Lear... does not look worried. Wow, that is beautiful.

Also: horsies!

At 23:10 Anonymous Wendy Withers said...

I am tempted to kiss him under the chin! I do not think Mr. Lear want's that.

Also, for the person who wanted to see the Scalzi/ Wheaton fanfic: http://wendylbolm.wordpress.com/2010/06/15/in-which-i-enter-a-fanfic-writing-contest/

(I cannot remember who it was.)

Ahaa, hum. Sorry. Got carried over there.

So glad this makes you happy. And it does sound like the perfect thing to decompress from all stressful realities.

At 01:05 Blogger Na said...

Sweetness.

I've only ever been up on a horse three or four times. One experience was awful; horse took off and I nearly fell off and onto a fence. Another experience, however, was transcendent. All you horsey folk inspire me to want to try it again.

King Lear makes me laugh ... seems to me like he's really digging the King part of his name. And I'd assume no Bengals get to sit on his head.

Sigh... Nick's father's Alzheimer's continues to get worse, and faster than it had been. Sunday it was still manageable at home; yesterday saw the decision to get him into in-patient hospice immediately.

Phiala, it does sounds like Nick's father is near the end.

No fun, getting through this hard time...you have my sympathy.

That photo of Lear makes me want to give him a big nose kissie and rub and snuggle his great big head. Love big, blocky male cats (love all cats but there is something about the big head ones who look so tough but just want a good snorgling and some Momma-loving that touches me).

At 09:23 Blogger vampi said...

oh phiala i'm sorry to hear that. my thoughts are with you and your family. that is never easy.

Mim wants to be ROCKED, like back and forth, with my hand on her neck.

Anyone else have her (or his) brand new copy of Boss's edited Stories? I bought mine yesterday, downloaded it to Kindle today and cannot wait to go home from the office, put on comfies, and read with the big old boycat snoring on my lap (nice and hot, grr...).

At 14:09 Blogger Marjorie said...

Hang on. Stories is out now? I thought it wasn't out till September.

Also, hi.

And Phiala, big hugs.

At 21:17 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Pretty SURE Stories is out today. The Boss is in NY doing an event for it tonight. Or I guess DID an event at this point.

I am home for an hour of Bengaling, leaving the teens, far fewer tonight , to a movie. (Avatar, no Vampires or werewolves, what could go wrong?)

Snuck in a ride on DIm as well. DId pretty good, with my new Things we learned yesterday, except a BIG EVIL STORM (some rain) came and he had to FREAK in the ring because you could HEAR this on the roof.

Then there was a bit of WATER near his gate to his pasture, and that was THE SCARIEST THING EVER and so he had another freak and nearly tore my arm off.

Horses. Magic they are.

Still, progress. He only THOUGHT he was going to take off at a gallop when we started lunging. Then he remembered we start at a walk now.

I helped him remember this.

Took a while.

At 21:25 Blogger Cecily said...

YAY for helping DIM! I am so glad things are progressing well with him.

At 21:30 Blogger Jess said...

Yeah, I'm wondering where I got September from. I'm all confused.

Poor Dim. It's hard to be a horse. Noises are twice as loud thanks to your big, swivelly ears; your eyes are on either side of your head, so you can only see stuff properly if you turn it sideways; and the denim-clad bipeds are always going, "Whoa," which is how you feel most of the time. Whoa! Dude! Gah! At least I imagine so.

At 21:43 Blogger ariandalen said...

It's about time you gave KING Lear his due! ;)

Sounds like you are getting the work and time with Dim that you both need. Yay! Only good will come of this. :)

Plus, you currently have a wondrously clean office! Proof that Boss is away. ;)

Phiala, sorry to hear that Nick's father's Alzheimer's has suddenly accelerated. It's such a difficult disease to deal with, and there is no "win." Hugs to all concerned.

He's been a curmudgeon since i met him 16 yrs ago, but now he actually has good reason to be. *sigh* Grumpy poot...Just stick around 'til your dad gets home!

Lorraine, if you haven't, someday when you get time (hah!) I highly recommend "Animals in Translation" by Temple Grandin, or any of her books, really. Insight into horses, definitely, but probably also Bengals!

Dr. Grandin is a fascinating woman - I met her once, and saw her speak. She has fairly severe autism, but has turned that into a remarkable insight into animal behavior. I can't recommend her books highly enough.

Thanks again for all the good wishes. They're picking up Nick's dad today... we should be seeing his mom and sister on Saturday. Should be very very rough.

My father in law just sent me this:

One morning the husband returns after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap. Although not familiar with the lake, his wife decides to take the boat out. She motors out a short distance, anchors, and reads her book.

Along comes a Game Warden in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, 'Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?'

'Reading a book,' she replies, (thinking, 'Isn't that obvious?')

'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informs
her.

'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading'

'Yes, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you in and write you up.'

'For reading a book,' she replies.

'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informs her again.

'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading'

'Yes, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you in and write you up.'

'If you do that, I'll have to charge you with Sexual assault,' says the woman.

'But I haven't even touched you,' says the game warden.

'That's true, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment.'

'Have a nice day ma'am,' and he left.

MORAL: Never argue with a woman who reads. It's likely she can also think

Phiala, Temple Grandin was one of my SIL's instructors at...University of Colorado (I think). Large Animal Husbandry at any rate.

I got a bunch of her books when we were struggling to find a diagnosis for Son+Heir. Fascinating reading about autism from the inside, and her strong ability to perceive things from the animal's POV.

Don't worry! You live in Minnesota! There will be more. When I lived in Minnesota, I went to a college with a chapel that had a giant cross on it. It waited until after I left to get thrown around in a storm.

At 05:51 Blogger Jill said...

Considering the tornadoes killed a few people and caused a lot of damage, I can't find myself getting excited about their appearance.

I hate summer and will be pleased when it's winter again.

Ouchies Sally! Hope the hand heals fast.

I used to quite like storms but now I'm worried about the cats. We don't really get storms here and definitely not ones you should worry about but somehow it's still scary.

Can't believe you abandoned Bengals during the storm watch Q! I'm surprised you weren't peed on by all of them .. {this tsk was brought to you by united feline federation}

In other news, Jess makes me laugh. Like, I wish I could live in her brain.

Morning! Going to be a wonky day here, lots of work and for reasons that are very unclear to me, we are playing first set outside tonight, which means hauling and setting up PA.

Second set inside. Which means teardown during break.

Need TEA!!!!!!

At 09:22 Blogger Jess said...

The gig's being filmed today, isn't it? Bet that's Why Outside.

At 09:22 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Yes. TEA.
Good morning!

At 09:37 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Nooo.....Only first set outside.

then we move into the pub, reset up and shoot second set.

Third set will be a brain dead mess. Likely all Johnny Cash.

Off to see Math the Band, MC Chris, and MC Lars!

MATH THE BAND!!!!!!

Look! I've interviewed Nathalie for The Night Garden! In a new, thrilling featured-contributors-feature, to come your way in monthly installments!

Look again! Gayle made this necklace, which means we now officially have a Jewelry section on the site! Instead of a blank page! Woohoo!

Keep looking!! Cynthia Toy, whom some of you know on Twitter as @fairiesnest, made a Night Garden fairy doll! And she's for sale from Cynthia's Etsy store! She will donate the proceeds to GLBR! Hooray! \o/

My heavens, it's all very exciting. I would need to sit down, if I wasn't already.

At 16:00 Blogger Jess said...

Bugger it! Let's try that link to Gayle's necklace again.

At 16:12 Blogger Phiala said...

Hey Jess and all... you can use nightgarden.net links, and that's what will show in the browser (although for whatever reason they won't show up when hovering over the menu links).

I'd prefer that, and you probably would too!

So, jewelry is http://thenightgarden.net/?q=image/tid/7 and the new doll is http://www.thenightgarden.net/?q=node/70 and so on.

Just use thenightgarden.net instead of sarahgoslee.com/tng

I'll work on the hover-links.

Everything looks lovely - I'm excited to see new contributions appearing.

Ooh, nice interview. I am going to go back & read again when I am more awake.
I just got home from seeing Filter Theatre's production of Twelfth Night. It was great - really funny, energetic, with heaps of Rock, audience participation & tequila.
I was feeling really zonked when I got home after work & contemplated not going out again. So glad I did.

Hope all those going to Q's show have heaps of fun & Rock, too

At 18:12 Blogger Dragonsally said...

What, no comment from Jess about how crowded it would be in her brain of PG lived in there?
My god I WANT THAT DOLL.
Brilliant interview too.

At 19:17 Blogger ariandalen said...

Cool interview, Jess!

That is a gorgeous necklace, Gayle! You really need to look at the close up to appreciate it's complexity. :)

I want "Lilibet" too, Sally. I just don't have the spare money. I am absolutely sure that a wonderful person will purchase her. :) Cynthia does exceptional work.

At 21:19 Blogger gaypet said...

Love the article! And thanks for putting the necklace in. :)

Wow, the things that happen when I sleep!
Well done, fiends!

At 00:48 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

I so have catching up to do! It's like I looked away for a second and everything went COOL!

Great gig tonight but it was REALLY a lot of work, switching from out to in is NOT going to happen again, but things went well.

Tho I did really have to work for it both out and in.

Still, I think all concerned had a fine time.

At 02:00 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Just been out to get my blood sucked.
Then bought lemons. Such glamourous life I live. Thought you guys might want to know.

At 02:12 Blogger Chantrelle said...

Just home from a really great Imogen Heap show. First time I've seen her. Loved it!

Glad there was much rock tonight!!

At 08:07 Blogger Jess said...

Yay rock! How did being filmed go?

It's all Nathalie! I just thought up stuff to ask her.

For non-twittering Fiends, here's a picture we will all enjoy. American Libraries recently gifted us with a pin-up ;-)

In other news, I am at working doing very dull and repetitive, but necessary, things.

At 10:07 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Let's try that link again.

At 10:25 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Morning! Ack. Zombie brain. Work day too. And gig day. Was going to be new post day, but I am thinking I slept too late. Tomorrow I will go on an adventure and write about it. Today I work. And rock.

Can someone send me LOTS of links to all these things I am missing? Please? be my assistant Fiends?

At 10:29 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Missing things? What missing things?

I have zombie brain too, but (fortunately?) the stuff I have to do today is boring and simple. But there's a lot of it.

Good morning. x.x

Need coffee. x.x

I will give you links to nerdcore music.

Math the Band: http://www.wix.com/maththeband/maththeband

MC Lars:
http://mclars.com/site/
(He raps about Edgar Allen Poe, Moby Dick, and Hot Topic not being punk rock. He is my favorite nerdcore rapper type person.)

MC Chris:
http://mclars.com/site/
(I'm not that big of a fan of MC Chris, but his song nrrrd grrrl is cute. He's one of the more popular guys.)

Last night at the concert I kept getting manhandled by an annoying drunk girl off to my right. She managed to scratch me in the far corner of my left eye. I think I might get antibiotic cream today.

At 11:21 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Wendy - Ouch. Antibiotic cream wold be a good idea. Nails are not very clean things. I'm going to try out this list when I get home.

At 11:23 Blogger One Sock Short said...

And of course, everyone knows now that the nerdcore list must include <a href="http://mariancall.com</a>, right? ;-)

At 11:25 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Not doing too well with links today. That's <a href="http://mariancall.com/>Marian Call</a>

At 11:26 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Grrrr. Marian Call.

It's maybe time I had lunch.

Did you all see Sir PTerry is sponsoring a 1st Novel prize? The Terry Pratchett Prize
I know we have lots of writers here, and it doesn't appear to be limited to the UK.

At 15:01 Blogger dabbler said...

Hi Marjorie...forwarded that to my writing kids...and then read the details. It is UK only, alas.

At 15:16 Blogger Marjorie said...

Oh damn.I must have read too fast and missed that. Sorry for getting everyones hopes up :-(

It's fiendish magic -

Work has been soul-draining recently. I've been envious of those reading "Stories", edited by Himself, but haven't had the time to do anything about it.

Came home from 6 hours at work and a memorial visitation of a neighbor to find a package on my porch.

Inside - a hard back "Stories", edited by Himself.

Just when I need it the most.

Fiendish Magic, I tell you - no other possible explanation. Couldn't have possibly pre-ordered it months ago and forgotten. Nah - not me.

At 22:15 Blogger ariandalen said...

Siri! Hi! Hope work gets better sooner, rather than later. {{{Siri}}}
