More Adventures in Camping...

Camping, Round Two had some great moments. Lola was one of those, she was a fine addition to the party. And she loved it. What's not to love? Woods, lakes, another dog, her people....I am so glad I brought her, we'd thought to try it to give Cabal a bit of a break, but having her along was no bother, and made for a delightful time.

We have a lovely place to camp. I could never "camp" in one of those places where tents and campers are all over each other, like little cities, only one is sleeping in a tent or camper. What's the POINT? Camping should be out in the wilderness, and should not involve a host of other people, in my humble opinion.

Our site is little more than a clearing. No showers. No water. There is a sort of toilet. A real hole in the ground affair. But that's it.

The clearing is off a dirt road, and does have three areas where one can tie horses, tho we put up our own lines, and we bring everything we need. There is also an information board. One side has a half eaten map of the trails, and the other more BEAR info that is strictly needed for confidence, if you ask me.

I think this would do:

In regards to BEARS, if you see one go the other way for Gods sake. Don't run, hope the BEAR is in a good mood. Don't leave your food out because there is no way you have brought enough anyway and you will need it all for yourselves, let alone feeding any random wildlife. If your dog barks like a crazy thing you might want to consider the safety of your car.

I've been riding a horse named Chanel, who belongs to our friend the Awesome One (as we fondly call him, and he is) She is a big bay, might be part Thoroughbred/Quarter Horse. BIG. And she knows that she can intimidate me, as we recall from last time. If she can get me to quit, she will. And it's scary. Mel says it isn't "Bucking" she is just "Throwing her Ass in the air"

Ok. Fine. Whatever. It's scary, especially going downhill in the woods on a narrow trail.

I'm not going for it anymore. Decided before we even left for camping that wasn't going to happen. Well, I knew it WAS going to happen, the ass in the air bit, but it was NOT going to work this time.

I am happy to say it didn't. The secret is, much like being on stage, to act like you know what you are doing. No fear. You can't let it in. You cannot believe, or even think, that you might fail. Or you will.

When that ass goes in the air, you whip the reins around and smack it, and let that horse know EXACTLY what you think, in language more suited to a waterfront bar than a gentlewomen. And she will try again. In fact, on a three hour trail ride, you might spend just over half with your horse trying every way she can to intimidate you into giving up.

It's wearying. Fear wasn't an option this time, but I was pretty close to worn out by the time she grudgingly gave up and went nicely. It being over 90 may have helped this.

I need to ride her more, a few times a week, out where she lives, and let her know she is GOING to behave herself.

Or I will smack that ass.

You see, these rides have been sort of warm ups, my horse friends tell me, for the rides we are going on later this summer. And I need to be ready.

What else did I learn? There is no joy that can compare to an icy cold beer in the middle of a ride, taken from your saddle pack, drank down in one or two drinks (all the while alert for Ass in Air)

Drinking NA Beer is really handy for this moment, as you CAN drink it down in one or two drinks, and still remain upright in the saddle. Perfect.

I also learned that when you bring only a finite amount of food and then need to cook it on the campfire at the end of a long hard day of riding, WHATEVER you have to eat will be the BEST thing you have ever had. Burghers, potatoes, carrots onion and cream of mushroom soup in a foil packet cooked on the fire?

Best meal ever. Hands down.

You and your little dog may also be in your tent and asleep by 10 too. Despite the fact that even tho you remembered pillows this time, you have realized a few pillows do not a bed maketh. Got to work on this Bed Thing. Chased my sleeping pad and sleeping bag around the tent half the night. No idea what their aversion to me IS.

However we camp next time, I do know a few things. My friends will be there. I will play violin while dinner is cooking. Chanel will know who is the Boss.

And we will bring Lola.
Love and Camping Lessons,
Lorraine

Sounds like you had a good time!

How did Lola do on the trails, as you were riding?

lol, love to hear about camping, sounds amazing.

I'm so glad you and Lola had a good time. I'm sure that playing the violin while the food cooked made it taste better too.

At 18:54 Blogger Jess said...

Well that's a fine time, ma'am. Welcome back.

I have nothing to report. I made cornbread today, and watched some very old Doctor Who-- Susan, Barbara and Ian sort of era. Barbara is rubbish. All she does is scream and fall over.

At 19:00 Blogger Beez said...

Sounds like a perfect camping weekend, ass in the air and all.

I have to agree, sometime nothing is as good as a cold one in hot weather- NA here too, so no regrets involved.

Glad Lola enjoyed it. From the "sacked out" pictures she got to burn off some of that puppy energy.

And the duck and the water? I think we're supposed to remind you about that.

At 19:08 Blogger Precision Grace said...

I'm getting my tick in early this time. (tick)

Sounds like a fine old time was had. And well done on staying strong with the horsey (I reckon they respond to the same thing as dogs - calm and assertive).

Don't know if you have this already Q but there are these thin mats that go under the sleeping bag you can get and they make a huuuge difference in terms of nightly comforts. If you don't have one, I strongly suggest you get it (I'll try to link an example here - hope it worked.)

At 19:17 Blogger Jenn said...

In regards to the slippery sleeping bag. Go to Odd Lots or your area's equivalent and by a roll of that shelf liner that is kinda foamy in texture. If you can find some that are for deep shelves - 18" - that's awesome, but even the narrow will work.

Cut a piece that is about a foot shorter than you bag. When you set up, put this under your bag. Voila. And it's a light, squishable, easy to pack addition to your gear.

Luck!

Lovely. I did nothing nearly so exciting, I'm afraid. And now will spend the evening guarding the dog from the horrible fireworkmonsters.

At 19:48 Anonymous Sister Tracy said...

You didn't mention the small children so I assume they were thrown to the bears early on.....

Almost FIREWORKS time. For the third night in a row. You can pretty much buy every kind of firework ever made down at the bait shop, up to the big industrial kind that people have no business messing with after a few beers. The cats are in permanent hiding. Fireworks and kids. They've had a hard week.

At 20:16 Blogger Beez said...

Sister Tracy- you are one damn funny woman.

My dog will join your cats in hiding.
My cat doesn't give a rip (true of almost everything).

Q- You are an inspiration. I remember how nervous you were when you first started riding again. And I remember how nervous you were before the first camping trip. Now look at you! You rock.

I had a fabulous day today. My dog and I were in a parade! We walked for the Humane Society. Well, I say WE, but she was paraded along the route in a wagon I decorated especially for her. So much fun. It was a 3 mile trek with 15000 spectators... I didn't expect it to be so big or so long. My feet hurt. :)

I hope everyone has a wonderful evening. I think I'm about to collapse for the night. ;)

At 21:05 Blogger Dragonsally said...

You pushed Olivia the whole way?

I hope she appreciated it...just as well you had fun eh ;)

At 21:18 Blogger Ticia said...

We pulled her in the wagon, yes. I must say, she LOVED it. This was her first time in a wagon and she looked so proud of herself!

I was hoping I would be able to watch fireworks from the park, but trees were in the way. So, I started to walk through my neighborhood, but I had three random encounters with drunk people all within a block of my building, so I lit a hasty retreat.

I hope everyone in the states is enjoying all sorts of freedoms you can't necessarily enjoy in other countries. Actually, on that note, I hope all of the fiends in other countries are as well.

Hello fiends! Lorraine, it sounds like a wonderful adventure altogether. I have been ghosting a bit here lately and thought that I should probably jump back into fray by leaving a comment. I am so glad for your 'pants on the ground' episode and your horse adventures. Well done. I am also very glad to hear Cabal is back and doing well.

It sounds like I have missed a few other fiend events too. I hear some congratulations are also in order for Phiala (congratulations!!). I have missed you fiends. How are you all?

We had a nice 4th. Made dinner for the neighbors. I kicked ass with my meal :D

We bought some cheap, stupid "safe and sane" fireworks which is all you can buy around here to show the kids. They still loved it.

The sad news is our cat, who would turn 20 this year, has vanished. Yesterday he was barely moving and down to, maybe 6lbs...he used to be around 11lbs. Poor guy. He was deaf and had stopped eating. He went the way of my cat a few years ago, just gone. I dont' know where they go? He may come back but I doubt it. Poor Pooter. He was an old curmudgeon but hubby's had him since he was just days old.

You make me want to go camping, and I am not a huge fan. I do have to say though, that when you are traveling..say out of state, going to a State Park campground can be just right, cause it's hard to know where to camp if you don't use those pre-made camp grounds. Granted I don't use the ones that allow campers, cause that just feels wrong. I have traveled the US in an RV, and I firmly believe it is one of the best ways to see the US, but they should also be parked at RV camp grounds, not one with tents.

Love the pics and the tale. Sleep well fiends!

Morning! Rubius came back! Cool! And CHantrelles cat left. Not so cool, but they do DO that when they are very old...Poor kitty's.

Venus got OUT last night when I was unloading the car. And it RAINED, she wasn't out long just for the HUGE RAIN. Wet bedraggled thing! She was SOPPING and irate!

Like this was MY fault????

I can see RV parks when one is traveling around the country. I don't know if you know what I am speaking of, these campgrounds. When people talk about going UP NORTH around here, and they are just sort of little cities where people go on weekends in the summer, horrid things, packed like tuna.

Sardines. One gets packed like sardines, not tuna.

At 06:23 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Tuna get pretty packed too. Think of the size of your average tuna and the size of a tin...

And OF COURSE the rain was all your fault. Don't you control the elements?

At 07:01 Blogger Marjorie said...

Nice to see you back, Rubious. e missed you!

Hugs for Chantrelle. Never easy, even when you know it is coming. Hope you find him so you can say goodbye properly.

Good morning Lorraine - and yes, of course the rain was your fault. You are responsible for food, weather, beds, toys and Big Scary Noises. Your feline overlords are responsible for eveything else. Clearly, allowing it to rain, and allowing it to rain just when Her Highness was out, was a clear dereliction of duy on your part.

Probably you will have to Pay for this. I belive tuna and steak are both acceptable currencies.

Is it time to remind you about Lola and the Duck , yet? Or should we each make up our own version?

At 07:12 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

AH yes. That duck was everywhere. Despite Pearls best efforts. Must remember to go into that.

I have like, NO email this morning , except from Australia. And everyone I write is OUT OF OFFICE.

Is it STILL a holiday here? What gives?

At 07:46 Blogger LihuaEmilyP said...

Chantrelle, it's nice you had a nice holiday but I am sorry about your cat. I hope things turn out okay.

You know, I was vaguely irritated with myself for having read ALL the Sandman books but never having finished the final story in "World's End". And I finished it yesterday. Huh. NOT a bad idea to savor that last bit for two years later, yeah?

At 08:01 Blogger spacedlaw said...

My body seems to have decided that after all the sleep it demanded in the last few days in an effort to fit off cold of evilness it can have a late night.
I do not agree with it.

Today is the OFFICIAL 4th, since the real 4th was a day people already had off...or at least some did.

Got nothing else today. Hot and going to get hotter. Finally put in our window AC units yesterday, which I hate doing. Many years we don't, at all, but forecast for 100 F and only down to 78 at night makes me glad we have the option. Hate the noise and loss of windows, though.

Hi Rubius! So glad to see you. Olivia sends Tank a big, sloppy dog kiss with a madly waving tail.

Heheheh! Ass in the air, pants on the ground. Aleta. Teheheh.

At 09:45 Blogger Na said...

Doh! I just wrote a short novella of a comment and I think it disappeared. Hmmm.

Hello all! Hello hello Rubius!

Congrats, Lorraine, on the successful camping outing with Lola, and with riding Chanel, and cheers for Cabal's sitch, may he recover well.

We are with family, and saw lovely fireworks and had a busy day yesterday. Warm days and cool nights. Lovely.

I thought of a reason to camp in the non-wilderness way, as we are meant to do some this week, and I can see the upside: it's more fun to camp in a busy campground with friends than to simply stay at their house, and more fun to swim in a lake than someone's backyard pool. Or so I anticipate.

And regarding parenting and safety and giving monsters lots of unstructured time, I agree wholeheartedly on the latter. I can also attest that not all the fear out there is simple fearmongering. Someone tried to kidnap me when I was eight. This occurred in a "nice" and relatively safe neighborhood, and on a busy summer day, not fifty feet from my front door. It's a fact that sometimes kids, and their families, aren't so lucky as I was. So there's a balance to be struck, I'd say. And agree with vampi: pools do not count as a place to let one's monsters roam free.

I'm really happy that my younger monster spent part of this morning repeatedly arranging a broken string of beads (the mardi-gras kind) on the floor and asking me "Mama, what do you think this looks like?"

Now - I've missed some comments, going back, but hugs to Chantrelle for the missing kit.

And I need to go read Phiala's story - congrats, lady!

At 09:51 Blogger Jane said...

I'm with Ticia, I think I have a lot to say and then when I start typing, I realize, maybe not.

I love hanging out here and reading all the comments, learning what's happening in everyone's lives and knowing that you're all here, all the time.

Robyn, so sorry about the cat. Not knowing must be so hard.

Our 2 new kittens are trying to get out. They've never BEEN out, I'm not sure what they think is on the other side of those doors that go out. My other indoor cats didn't struggle to get out. They were always obsessed with getting into the basement.

Rubius, is it polite to ask if I know you under another name? I am Qitou on Twitter and (real name :-) Sharon Janesick on FB. Ignore my question if need be.

I think I know most everyone else's other names :-) Kind of.

Still a holiday here. We slept until 9am...

And what a great bunch of names!

At 13:01 Blogger Chantrelle said...

We've got Monty Python to thank for that name. Hubby found Poot on the streets of San Francisco, just weeks (or days?) old at a Nirvana concert in 1991. He named him after the Python routine. Officially his name was Johann. We always called him Poot though. Or pooter. Or poot poot. Or Pooty poot poot. ;-)

At 14:28 Blogger Jess said...

Poor Poot!

Lihua Emily: Phiala's publishing like it's going out of style. Here's a roundup.

Today we visted the National Aviary. (I am still uploading.) It is totally cheating as far as birding goes, but it's a fun place. They're walk-0through enclosures, so the birds fly right over your head, or come up to you to just stare. You can't help but feel happy being there. :)

At 15:19 Blogger Martha W. said...

That's sad about your cat, Chantrelle. Thanks for letting us know. There's no good way for life to come to an end. Maybe it was the best ending that could be. I'm glad you found him while he still had some life, so you could say goodbye and then know how it ended.

At 15:21 Blogger Cecily said...

((((HUGS)))) Having had a cat just disappear, I hope that you can find solace in the fact that you got to be there for your Pooter. Hard as it is, IMHO it's so much better than never knowing what happened. (((HUGS)))

Injured cat seems to be doing loads better, didn't need to go to the vet in the end as the swelling started to come down by this morning. This is the hardest thing we have to do for our pets, but when it is time for them, we owe them no more suffering.

It's sad, they don't live as long as we do. We will miss them. But it would be a poor way to repay all the love they give us, if we didn't let them, and help them, go when it is time.

Chantrelle, I'm sorry to hear about Pooter. But I'm glad you had the chance to give him a gentler end. I'd be more upset about not knowing too. Warm thoughts for you and Ralph and Ben.

Lorraine, you make even me want to go camping. But only with you and your horse friends. Horses and your fiddle by a campfire would make up for a lot.

I am getting back on the road to FIT. I am. I've had to admit that I can't stick to it on my own, so I'm rejoining Weight Watchers. I know the plan works for me, when I stick to it. But I need some in-person support to do the stick-to-it part. I've had very mixed results with WW meetings, but there's a center near me with lots of meetings, so I can keep trying different groups till I find one where it feels like I belong. Their plans are all very much "this is not a diet, this is a sustainable lifestyle change". Little by little, I hope to eventually find a skirt on the ground.

At 12:16 Anonymous Wendy Withers said...

:( I also need help being FIT. I don't have too many problems with the eating part, unless I get very stressed. I need help staying motivated to EXERCISE! Even if it is something fun, like dancing.

Maybe there is a group of cool chicks who also want to get FIT in NOLA.

I need to meet more cool chicks. I also think I want to get a haircut and dye my hair very dark red.

This is a problem, because I am unemployed. Probably until August. Hopefully only until someone who is hiring sees how awesome I am and gives me a job. I don't want to wait until August to have a job again, unless it is a REAL teaching job, where I start making 2 - 3 times how much I was making in Florida, working harder.

At 12:23 Blogger Jess said...

I kind of want to go a Striking Color, too, just for the novelty. But I'm not sure I can pull off darker hair. Plus I like the color it already is. It's mine, it's fine. Which rhymes.

I see all the comments, everywhere. (Well, not on the walls, or the insides of my eyelids. Just in the usual places, where they ought to be.)

So there's this big ceramic bird that my best friend gave me for my birthday. I love it, but I do not know where to put it. Where does a big ceramic bird usually go?

At 12:55 Blogger Marjorie said...

How big is big, Jess? I have a ceramic bird which lives on the windowsill, and my aunt has a larger one which lives on the fireplace, the opposite side to the coalscuttle. Does that help any?

At 13:02 Anonymous Wendy Withers said...

I think I would put a ceramic bird in a fish tank and give it little fishie friends, assuming the bird did not have deadly chemicals.

And, if I were not trying to get teaching jobs with the state, my hair would be purple right now.

At 13:07 Blogger Jess said...

It's about a fifteen inches long and eight high. And perhaps six-and-a-half inches fat. Big.

Could be a hearth bird, though the hearth's kind of crowded already. Several lanterns, a tall pot, a statue of Bast wearing a felt hat with a bow. If the bird sat with Bast, it would want a hat, too.

At 13:10 Blogger Phiala said...

If the bird sat with Bast, it would want a hat, too.

Well, if you were coming to the arts fest this weekend you could get the poor nekkid birdie his very own hat!

At 13:18 Blogger Jess said...

I'm sorry. :( We really have to start thinking more than a week in advance about these sorts of things. We never, ever do.

The bird is wearing a rather dashing twine tie at the moment. Bow ties are cool.

At 13:22 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Pics, Jess, please! Dashing ceramic birds demand to be seen. As do cats in hats.

Speaking of planning, are any Fiends in San Diego? I'll be there in January. One of the very rare occasions when ALA sends us someplace warm for our Midwinter conference.

MY ceramic birds (I have two) are on the shelves behind our bed. No specific reasons. But they can try to eat the nightmares that are trying to come through the walls.

No worries, Jess, really! It's going to be too hot for Arts Fest anyway, I'm afraid. Plus, I leave on Monday for two weeks of travel...

I would have loved to have you, but have plenty else to occupy myself with.

I will keep an eye out for bird hats, however. :)

Having no ceramic birds I almost feel left out. But I do have a done of different dolphins around my house, plus I have a ceramic Lorax, which I know most people do not. :-)

Thanks to everybody for their sweet words. Ben was really upset yesterday but quickly moved on...kids are so good that way.

Today is just another day. We're going to give our neighbors our cat food, etc. We'll get another cat but not quite yet.

Not that I should be photographing stuff on my hearth at 2:48 pm on a Tuesday, much less putting bow ties (which are cool) on them, but seeing as Sock insists. Note the fuzzy interruptor.

Thanks, Jess! I think I covet Bast's hat.

It would be much too small on you.

Sometimes statues of Bast require fuzzy security details to protect them from the paparazzi.

i like to put ceramic things out in the garden, but possibly that bird is too pretty.

okay. going camping (t'other kind). at least our friends are smart, and we're going in the middle of a week after a holiday; shouldn't be too crowded. good thing the clouds and rain have blown in, just in time. :P

I have to share a pic of my fur and blood Bast. His name is Westley the Dread Pirate Roberts. We just call him Westley.

Glad you had more fun, Ms. Fabulous! Sorry it was shortened by rain.

Rubius! I've been wondering how you've been! Good to know you survived the influx of tourists during the Olympics. :) How is Lammie?

Sorry to hear about Pooter, Robyn. He certainly lived a good, long life. As hard as it was, at least it wasn't Ben who found him several days from now. {{Robyn}} {{Ralph}} {{Ben}}

Gorgeous cat, Cecily. And what a great name.

Are you saying I have a big head, Jess? ;-)

I'm still tempted to do a dramatic hair dye too. But can't bring myself to commit to the money to it. I just don't trust myself with do-it-yourself dyes. Plus I could use professional advice on just how dramatic I should go. Don't want to go dark red and then find out it makes me look like a clown (eek, scary!).

Ah! Westley looks like Serious Black!

Its the case of the mysterious missing comments!!!

I am happy to see all you folks again. Big waves at Nat!!

In answer to questions that no longer seem to be there, you may know me online as rubius or rubius0 or Kristina Gray. I am becoming more active on facebook now... so you may actually see me there more often now (sorry to any fiends whose messages I missed)

Lately you may also know me as one of the artists of Glasscapes at glasscapes.ca or on Etsy... which is my newest venture. We make glass pendants and thingies. ... but I doubt anyone here knows me that way.

Lammie, my cuddly cat is doing fine. She loves being able to go outside since we leave the door open to let the kiln run.

Jess, as the new bird has a bow tie he needs a red Fez.

I have two ceramic swans on the window sill here in the lounge, and two ceramic ducks on the window sill in the dining area. Now I am aware that they are nekkid, and will have to rectify the situation.

At 18:41 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Ohhh, Kristina, they are pretty. Sally likes pretties.
