I am SO Going to the Fair....

I think I am doing a lot this next week. It's too early to tell tho. I know today is riding lesson, What Do I do With All The Stuff In The Garden cooking, a Boss home, and a Zumba. All good there.

The weekend is a Kitty Comes Home! (Which is an odd way of thinking on it, as even when she isn't on tour, she doesn't LIVE with us) She's here for a couple days, and then some GAGA.

But, ah, THEN: The Fair! Yes. I know. I am rather excited about this FAIR and it's a week away.

I love that place! Most years I forget this, and completely forget to go, but Not this year!

My Flash Girls Bandmate, Emma Bull, LOVED the Fair. She had it down to an art form. Down to WHICH pronto pup stand you needed to go to (Despite the fact she didn't eat meat) Down to the route you needed to take so you would end up at the BEST coffee stand on your way out. She knew the importance of sitting for a while on Machinery Hill.

I went to the Fair one year and saw Motley Crue. (I see a lot of bands I would not otherwise see when our Kitty is on tour. Get this: I always have a great time. Teach me to be a musical snob.)

I love the Seed Art! I love the Spooky Feeling you get near the Haunted House and how if you go in, you will ALWAYS scream. I love the BEES and the crop arrangements! (Maybe it's flower arrangements. I forget. Who arranges CROPS?) I love the World Bazaar With it's Cheap Junk you don't need.

I love the Barns, and the animals, the Seiously Weird Chickens, Funky Rabbits (Birdchick and I spend a LOT of time there) of course the Horses, even the COWS. NOT the pigs. I hate pigs. And you know, this stems DIRECTLY to an event that happened when Emma took me to the PIG BARN at the Fair and we saw, well, no, I can't talk about it. But it was HUGE and a BOY PIG. Never Again.

I love watching people wait a half hour in line for a Pork Chop on a Stick (no, no idea WHY they do this, part of the fun.)

The news just had bits about the fair on and they now have Deep Fried Bologna Sandwiches. And Deep Friend Butter. And Deep Fried Choc Covered Bacon. (Actually I'm Not sure if that is Deep Fried as well, but for the purposes of this Blog, we will assume so. Odds are with us.)

Up here, people take Cheese Curds and cover them in Batter and Deep Fry them too.

French Fries come in Buckets, as do Cookies. And you can get Sodas in Gallon Jugs.

(You don't want to EAT these things. You will be ill. They're just for lookin at. Like the Midway)

That isn't why I go tho. I think it's the people. Everyone is so happy, you make friends where ever you go, in what ever line. When the DNR tower used to be open, the people you met at the top, after climbing hundreds of stairs were REALLY your friends. The people who escape the Haunted House with you, were definately your friends. (More than likely you had just been CLINGING to each other for the past 20 min)

You can sit in the Beer Garden (even tho there is no real beer) and look at Saw Art (Kid you not, Google it) or in the International Village and hear your friends play Irish Music (Or gig yourself, which has happened too)

And this year, we can Live Tweet it.

And you can come too.

Love and the Fair,
Lorraine

Deep Friend Butter? I had missed that. Well I like butter. I could even be a butter fiend. But not THAT deep.

Box of ticks, deep fried. Only good use for 'em. Feed them to the goofy looking chickens.

You inspired me to break out in song!!

Dan has great stories of the state fair from when he was a kid - his father displayed waterfowl, and they were in the same barn with the rabbits and chickens.

And while I understand why you might be traumatized by a pig, er, poker, I once saw a boy dolphin trying to show off to a girl dolphin. It has a hook on the end, people. Gives me nightmares!

At 08:01 Blogger Marjorie said...

Sounds .... interesting.

I also hesitated a little at the deeop fried butter, but (shrug) who knows.

When I was a young & imressionable girl guide I helped out at thr BAth & West Show (which I think is similar - they had animals and cheese & cider and more big roasted animals and vast sugar-y snacks that you can shake a stick at, plus things like sheep shearing and pole climbing and all sorts)
No one told us whan we signed up that we were going to be runner s for the Judges which mean going through show rings FULL OF BULLS...

I think I may have missed the seriously wierd chickens, but I'm sure they were there.

I didn't go this year but maybe next year..

It's a little ridiculous how happy this entry just made me. For one thing, I LOVE fairs. I love the funnel cake (PLEASE tell me that you have that there), the games, the animals, the crazy stuff you buy that you'll probably never need. Although, my favorite pair of earrings are ones I bought at a local fair.

As for your pig barn episode, I once went to a cow barn at a fair. BAD IDEA. Some things cannot be unseen, ya know?

One of my good friends lives in MN, and she's going to the fair. It'll be her son's first one! And she has a (possibly unholy) love for the fried pickles. One of these days, I'm going to make it there and see for myself. Until then, I defer (sort of) to her in that respect.

Have fun at your lesson! I am about to go out and do some horsie things myself. :-)

Of course the highlight was horses, horses, horses.

That sounds great! More than great! Amazing! Deep-fried anything ... reminds me of when the Birdchick took us to lunch and everybody looked at me when I didn't want a cheese curd. They were like, "Emily ... you do DO cheese curds?"

Fun! Probably not going to the Grange Fair, though, unless other folks want to and drag me along. It starts today. More fun with a group of people, I think.

Okay, three ways to do it:
easy ways are put a single or double quote before each angle bracket.

Or you can use the HTML code:
< is written as & lt ; (without spaces; less than)
> is written as & gt ; (without spaces; greater than)

I am deep-frying this comment just for the occasion. Don't ask me how. Just believe it. Crispy outside, and Hot Contents within.

Well that sounds fun! Now this is the same fair at which you win your ribbons, yes? Or is that a different one? (Watch out for Beekeeping Nemeses either way. They'll likely have it in for you.)

There's a little art fair on up in Shadyside this weekend. We may go to that.

I have never been alarmed by an Unexpected Animal Part. But there was a time I went to the Cleveland Zoo with my parents and came across two big tortoises in the throes of ecstasy, and we stood there watching them for longer than was comfortable. It's like only gradually realizing that you've rented Caligula when you meant to get Spartacus.

< /pseudo html works if you leave a space before or after the bracket, too, but doesn't look as authentic. >

<whereas "& lt ;" (minus spaces and quotes) and "& gt ;" (ditto) looks like the real deal>

I grew up in a little redneck town where the only event every year was the fair. We got days off school because 3/4 of the kids had animals to show at the fair. I wasn't one of those kids and I had fun at the fair as a kid but once I hit high school it was a bunch of rednecks w/ bad beer hitting on teenage girls. The fair and I don't get along.

BUT, I do understand why other people love it. I think I just overdosed on it as a kid.

Oh, ben's awake...Be back later!

Leaving only the other boss... with no buffer. And probably dumping a lot of good boss's projects on my plate.

May have to reconsider the Plan. It involved 2-3 more years here, finishing out the current project plan. That may have to change.

Hey, we have a Zazzle shop! Though only two customers that I know of, so far. (Even I haven't bought anything yet. It's so sad.) So we wouldn't make a living. We'd all starve.

But in seriousness, Phiala: how awful. Nothing worse than working with someone who's completely unworkable.

In October we can drink and bitch with Linda! Let me know if either of you need a place to stay, by the way. You're both welcome, provided you don't mind an airbed.

At 12:02 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Phiala - Undiluted bad boss sounds very hazardous to one's health. I hope some better solution comes along for you soon.

Wish me luck, fiends. I am off to the doctor to find out what this miserable pain under my breastbone is. No heart symptoms...just nasty gripping pain and lots of gas. Perhaps it's a gall bladder thing brought on by the fried food here?

Doctor at 3:15.

But, all pigs are not created equal...and I've been privileged to see fabulous skateboarding pigs!
At the State Fair no less...

Marjorie, you're right-- that's nuts. Did you try ordering through UK Zazzle? It gives prices in pounds sterling, but I dunno whether or not that changes shipping costs.

At 13:39 Blogger Fluffy said...

Dennis read to me from the paper this morning that there are now some deep-fried concoctions at the Texas State Fair for which you need ID: fried frozen margaritas, and.. well, there's no sugarcoating this - fried beer (a beer-filled pretzel pocket.)

I think this state fair is where the fried butter was invented.

And I am upset about the cheese fries. We have a place here that makes great cheese fries. With hand-cut skin-on potatoes and real cheese... Dammit. And here I am in work-avoidance mode...

And Beez, the upside is that you know how to do EVERYTHING.

At 13:54 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Shipping is MUCH more affordable now from the UK address (6.98£ for a mug). Thank goodness for that. I might order some for friends too.

At 14:06 Blogger Pi R Squared said...

Why would anyone deep fry butter?

Do people actually EAT it?

I may succumb, as I have chocolate in the house. I'm not planning to fry it, though.

I was craving chocolate earlier, but there was none. So I settled for peanuts and cranberries. Healthy, and certainly filled that gnawing void of hunger, but not very chocolatey at all.

Point: We have an FB page and a Twitter for this Night Garden stuff, folks. Best not to ask me about that stuff here. Otherwise I'll talk about it here, without so much as blinking. Don't encourage me.

Dabbler, sending wishes for good results at the Dr.

First kitten throw-up today. May not sound momentous (and actually it's kind of sad) but there has been an excessive amount of cat throw-up in our household in past years and gee, here it is again. Maybe a one time thing? And who did it??? OK done talking about it.

Phiala - sorry about the Boss :-(

Thanks for the good wishes, all.

I would love to see the fair with you (if you want company).

Fall must be approaching: I'm having the urge to buy lots of things from King Arthur Flour.

Hey, there's a question: Fiends, I'm in the market for a new stove. I have an ancient flattop, and it's dying and probably extremely inefficient.

I'd kind of like a new flattop, but have heard some disturbing things about not being able to use them for canning or dyeing - things with large pots of boiling water. And with the new tops being very easy to crack. My ancient one is made differently than the new ones, it seems. But coil electrics are becoming less common, and don't seem to have as many features because of course everyone wants a flattop.

Unfortunately gas isn't an option or this would be easy.

Anyone have experience with the new flattops especially for canning & hard use?

As for resuscitating fish.... I'm reading Amy Tan's 'Saving Fish From Drowning' right now....I'll let you know if there's a way.

I'm glad Vampi asked. Do Not Recusitate was what I thought when I saw DNR, too.

I've come across week 36 (etc) on wage slipsfor people paid weekly where, as they count from the start of the financial year in April, week 36 would be w/c 13th December. Also we count weeks when we have Care Proceedings in court, so we can see how much we're missing government guidelines by, but that counts from when each case starts. Never come across meetings by week, though.

We tend propose a week for a meeting and then people work out on which day most of the participants are available. It is easier than trying to nail a day immediately, because most of the time (8 times out of 10) people have already things planned exactly on that same day.

And today I refused a meeting on the 15th October because I am travelling to Octocon! (and I also spent the day with a guy that comes from Dublin so I need to tap him for addresses)

oh Duh, I never thought about 'do not resuscitate':) In Indiana DNR means you'd better have the right number of life jackets in your boats or a darn good explanation for that dead deer in the back of yer pickup truck.

re: Numbering your weeks- MY schedule goes more like, Gods is it September already??? I've got shows next month!!

I live near the MN State Fair grounds. It makes for traffic headaches during these 10 days but it is really fun people watching! I don't think I'll make it there this year, if I do it will be toward the end. I like the fine art building and all the other stuff, quilts, flowers, butter sculptures. Good times!

Today is the last day of my job. It is a grad student appointment that I have had for... at least 7 years. Very very odd. I don't have to give them back the laptop until next week and I have a couple of clean up tasks I'll wrap up over the next couple of days. I don't actually have a new job -- I have a little bit of freelance work I'm doing but very little. So I am in an interesting spot. I have some good leads on temping and tutoring so I should have some kind of income soon.

Honestly, it is kind of exciting. I really loved my job, but it really is time for something new.

I DO sorta wish I had made a plan as I did know this day was coming. But hey, free falling can be fun!

Did my first Piaffe today!!!!!! I am still smiling about it!

And get this: When the barn manager saw what was happening she pulled out her phone and TOOK VIDEO!

-I- didn't know what was happening. My teacher surprised me, had me up on HER horse.

New post tonight!!!!!!!!!!!! With pics and video!

Very Cool!

Phiala, I live 25 minutes north of Temple, TX. DH works at the hospital in Temple. I bet you'll be at the Blackland Research Center, or something to that effect. :)

At 15:40 Blogger ariandalen said...

YAY! for Piaffe post tonight!

Phiala, the cocoa-coated almonds you posted are sure to be better - they have a layer of dark chocolate under the cocoa! The ones Q has are probably the ones I get in the grocery - Emerald Cocoa Roast Almonds

These are coated with cocoa powder sweetened with sucralose. Very tasty.

The meeting is at "Joint ARS and Texas Agrilife facility in Temple, TX." All I know, I've never been there.

nutsonline used to have some that were just cocoa, I didn't look hard enough I guess. I don't really like Emerald nuts -- they all taste funky to me.

At 16:07 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

My unknown nuts are just coco powdered.

At 16:42 Blogger vampi said...

i enjoy reading about unknown nuts.

also artificial sweeteners are death to me. like allergic reaction go to hospital death. no death nuts for me.

At 17:36 Blogger LihuaEmilyP said...

I don't like artificial sweeteners ... partly because everybody assumes I need them!

At 17:46 Blogger ariandalen said...

Hmmm...the only thing I can find in the Temple phone book is the Texas Agriculture Experiment Station on Blackland Road, but I'm also looking in last year's phone book (2009). I don't know if DFW, Houston, or Austin airports have flights to Temple, though I know there are flights to Killeen/Ft. Hood and Waco.

Emerald Cocoa Roast Almonds ingredients list: dry roasted almonds, modified food starch (potato), natural & artificial flavors, cocoa powder (processed with alkali), salt, acesulfame potassium, sucralose. Why yes, I do happen to have a large container of them. I can understand why some people would not like them; however, I find a few are usually a good fix when wanting chocolate.

Trying for a new post but Magic is AWOL outside somewhere. Hoping the lil pudding gets hungry soon...

At 19:05 Blogger Jess said...

Uh oh. Is he back yet? :(

At 19:06 Blogger Phiala said...

the almonds I linked to have no artificial sweeteners: Semisweet chocolate (sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, vanillin), whole dry roasted almonds, natural cocoa powder, sugar, gum arabic

The Temple meeting is here. Not that I'm certain I'm going yet, but it seems kind of likely.

No. Not inspiring my writing and one can't go LOOK for the guy, I've left the Scream Porch open with some food and I keep checking.

Why didn't he come back with the girls tho???

I mean, he isn't dead in the street, but STILL, Dude!

At 19:11 Blogger Jess said...

Kind of a dumb question, actually, given I've only just worked out that you left the comment a couple of minutes ago, as opposed to an hour ago like I thought. Maaaaaagiiiiic! Here pusspusspuss!

</not helping>

Hope he turns up soon!

At 19:20 Blogger Jane said...

Hope he's home soon! Worry worry...

At 19:35 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

And he's back!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thankyou. Heart, please beat again.

Now I shall write.

At 19:36 Blogger Phiala said...

Whew!!!!

At 19:40 Blogger Jess said...

Yay! Phew.

Now for heaven's sake, shut the windows.

At 19:43 Blogger dabbler said...
