A Leopard in the House....

We haven't had any Bengal Blogging in far too long, I am thinking. So tonight, just in time for the Holidays:

Magic!

This picture, and the one below, are NOT Magic. I may be getting ahead of myself here, you may not know the story, or you may, but let's go back a little. Magic is an F1 Bengal, which means his Daddy was an ALC (Asian Leopard Cat, a wildcat, one of the smaller class of Leopards) This is Sancho Dos, ALC. And we believe: Magic's Daddy.

We aren't sure of his Mother, it seems likely tho that she was also an early generation Bengal.

Here's Magic. Magic came to live with me about 2 years 6 months ago. I had been fostering the tough case Bengals, with the Great Lakes Bengal Rescue group, the ones that needed more, the ones who had issues. I love them. All of them. I had mentioned to Janet, director of GLBR that I might like to try an early generation Bengal, if we found one that needed help.

Bengals are considered Domestic after Four Generations. Venus and Mim are F4. Four away from Leopard. Janet called me and said that there was an F1 in a shelter across the state, and the shelter had called us as they had no idea what to do with it, and could we take it NOW as it was not a cat they would ever be able to adopt.

They were right. The Kitty I picked up could not have been adopted. He trusted no one, he loved no one, and he was very, very afraid. He also had NO claws. None. All four feet, gone. A Domestic Cat, even afraid, will yowl it to the world. Magic never made a sound the entire ride back. He knew there was no one to call and in the wild, silence was the key to survival. He'd been thru several home at this point, and had never had anyone who understood him.

Bengals, all of them, are interesting creatures. If you ever think you might want one, you really, really need to do your homework first. Beautiful, yes, but they are bred from Leopards. I don't mean they will hurt you, anymore than any cat might, but they THINK differently. You will need to have a very clear understanding of this.

I gave Magic his own room, and built him a Screamed Porch where he could hop out and look at us in the kitchen. I fed him from a long spoon. I taught him how to play. I learned he had a voice, and that he could make the most astonishing array of sounds. I added a fountain so he could splash when he wanted. I cried the first time he let me give him a pet, while he was eating. I let him bite me and didn't pull away, let him taste me. I trusted him. He learned.

I changed the door to his room to a Scream door so he could look out into the Romance Room and see me with Venus and Mim. I let them come in and play, while he watched.

And then I let him out into the house. He does all the things Venus and Mim do. He lets me pet him while he eats. He joins in the circle dance when I come home, coming by quickly for pets, never stopping, but coming back for more.

It took a very long time. We understand each other. I'll never be able to pick him up and cuddle him, Bengals in general aren't cuddlers, and him more than most, but I can walk by him, carefully, and he won't run away.

He's kind of a pudding now, he cleans up everyone's plates. He gets pieces of steak when people come over, and sometimes, if there is only one, he will come out, never too close, but he'll be there. It's best to pretend you don't notice there is a Leopard in the House, and go about your business. Never look him in the eyes, and smile with your teeth not showing.

He's started running on the Cat Wheel, when no one is looking. But I can hear him. He'll get FIT too, my Magic.

But more than that, it's his soul that is getting FIT. He's healing, from whatever he went thru, from whatever he is by genetics. He's my friend. He has friends in Venus and Mim, who have accepted him. He joins us by the fire, and most importantly:

He's happy now.

He's living his life, and knows there is good in this world he finds himself in.

And that makes me happy.

I'm glad he's here and wouldn't have him any other way. Seeing how far he has come makes me KNOW, very, very surely, that there's pretty much nothing that can't be fixed.

With enough love, patience and determination.

Love and Magic,
Lorraine

You are so damn awesome.

I've always rescued cats--one I have now came to me as a feral kitten, and with a lot of love is now a lap cat--but I never heard of Bengals until I found you. And I find them to be amazing creatures.

Stories like this just feel magical--and they make me smile. It is truly amazing what can be accomplished with love, patience, and will. It moves mountains and makes Change. Real change. Change you can see--and pet.

I love these posts. I love the bengal pictures. :)

Sancho Dos is gorgeous! Though, obviously, not someone to fool around with.

Magic has come a long way, and it's all due to you, Ms. Fabulous. Thank you for letting me watch the ride. :)

reading this made me want to cry. i don't know if i could ever take on an F1 bengal, and there's something beautiful in knowing that there ARE people who are willing to put in the time and effort and love it takes to make one feel okay.

this also reinforces my determination to get my life in order so that i can help these beautiful cats as well.

I so love your Bengal stories, and most especially your Magic stories. They are in fact Magical.

I hope you are right that anything can be fixed. And most importantly I hope that anyone who is in doubt of that realizes it before it is to late for them.

Much love and thankfulness to all you Fiends, cat and human alike. <3

Wow. Time goes so fast. Can't believe Magic has been with you that long. I remember when you thought he could never have run of the house with Mim and Venus. Amazing what has happened.

His maybe father is so beautiful. Breathtaking.

Thanks so much for opening up this whole Bengal world to so many people. I did not even know these beautiful, misunderstood creatures existed until I starting hanging out here.

Reading about Magic's journey these past couple of years has been so wonderful. What a difference love and patience can make.

At 20:52 Blogger Dragonsally said...

And this made me cry, with happiness mind, but tears nevertheless.

At 21:07 Blogger dabbler said...

That picture of Magic from the early days is what brought me here, so it must be a couple of years I've been a Fiend. What a great post for Thanksgiving!

At 21:35 Blogger Jane said...

A Thanksgiving story for sure and though I've read Magic's story before, it always brings tears to my eyes. But you know what the fantastic thing is? Every time you tell the story the end of the post is different - Magic has changed, has fit himself into the household and is, as you say, happy.

The first time I read the Magic story (and I posted for the first time at the end of Dec 2008) I never would have guessed that the end of the story would ever be - Magic is happy.

Your statement that if they cross my path I'll save them (I may have it wrong) certainly proved to be the case for him.

At 22:03 Anonymous Wendy Withers said...

You are a miracle worker. I love Magic. <3 I started reading this blog because of the bengals.

This is my first no-family winter holiday! Last year around this time, I was posting about how unhappy I was having to deal with family holiday stress. Q had to deal with flowery housekeeping holiday present stress and told me to do what I wanted on the holidays. This year, I plan to eat, read, cook, and write (maybe not in that order). I've already started the festivities. I made liver pate (two STICKS of butter!!!!!) and am making stuffed mirlitons using some of the liver pate and rice. Tomorrow I'm making my first turkey.

Best holiday ever.

At 22:59 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Oh gosh, I haven't said...Happy Thanksgiving Day to all our American Fiends. Could you send some turkey to me over the interwebz please?

And now for something completely different...

Hi, FluorescentNinja and the raven! You are now Fiends! Here are your white, buckled jackets. Now where did that table go...Ah! Here it is! Our table full of supplies to personalize jackets; white is not always the kindest of colors. Have fun, and comment again!

And, LYS! You've been missed! {{{Lys}}}

I am so happy for Magic, I could see he was curious but so scared.

Not cuddlers, Bengals? Venus came for cuddles last time I was there. Several times. It is also true that I never tried to pick her up for that, I let her come to me and claim those cuddles. And complied. You need to know who is the boss there...

Magic's dad is beautiful.

At 00:43 Blogger Marjorie said...

Wonderful!
Magic is so beautiful, and it's so heartwarming to see how far he has come, and how much happier he is than when he came to you.

And Happy Thanksgiving, to all of the fiends who celebrate it.

I always hafta get a tissue when reading Bengal posts... Such awesometasticness! I'm so glad Magic found a home and that you have the ability to provide an understanding and safe environment for them!!!

We looked into Bengals for awhile and I realized while they are gorgeous and graceful creatures, we don't have the right kind of home/stability for them since we move so often and have quite a topsy turvy lifestyle. I love being able to vicariously Bengal through you though! ;o)

Much love and may Magical Moments continue in your world! <3

Hello from a wet and icy Thanksgiving morning. I am safely curled up on the couch with the cat for the moment. We won't travel until later, after worries of ice in the mountains are past.

The cat approves.

I should get up and make pie, really. I roasted the pumpkins last night. I might make pumpkin bread instead. Or never get my lazy ass off the couch. We'll see...

At 07:48 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Good Morning and thank you! Magic thanks you. Or maybe he wants second breakfast. Hard to say.

SO far my Thanksgiving is a fine one! I have coffee and am watching my SNow Guy do the plowing shoveling thing.

I am not AGAINST the work of doing it, but I know myself well enough to know get to the stable or the barn, yup. Make myself go out and shovel? Ain't happening.

Me and the dogs are having the day together, watching movies and reading and being lazy!!! Had a LOT of invites from a lot of wonderful people, but a day where I don't have to do anything? Perfect. Havn't had a day off since Ireland and that was a while ago.

It is important I think on Holidays to do what you WANT to do, what makes you happy. To actually enjoy them.

I am going to Turbo soon, special Thanksgiving class this morning that Daisy and I sort of talked our teacher into doing. I like the feeling AFTER that class, at any rate...

Thank you for sharing Magic's story with us...so glad he's finding his way within your household and discovering where he fits.

Happy Thanksgiving to all Fiends who celebrate and I'm even trying to send turkey and cranberry thoughts through the inter-web for Sally.

A lovely day to all!

Holy cats! It finally penetrated this skull that when you say Bengal, you mean Bengal.

As in a wild animal. As in one-generation-out-of-the-jungle Bengal, not just a brand name (like Toyger).

That makes your success all the more powerful.

Thank you for sharing, and educating.

At 11:55 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Bill, welcome, that made me laugh! Yup! I mean Leopards! Thank you, it's been a long lot of work with him, but we did it.

Watching this Parade thing. Not sure how I feel about it..

Maybe-Dad is a very noble-looking beast.

Always knew you'd bring Magic around. Ya done good. :) Still love those huge eyes on him, how he stares and stares till he sees everything. What a fine, sweet boy he is.

Apparently it is Thanksgiving, for here we are with the folks. And I have made a squash thing with breadcrumbs atop. There were mini Quiche Lorraines as well, but they didn't look or taste much like you, Q.

At 17:13 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Am I thinking you might have locked yourself out (or in) OSS?

Pi - thanks for sending me the yummy food. My braintummy thoroughly enjoyed it.

Jess, I was wondering how you knew Q's taste too. *snerk*

I am trying to persuade myself I have enough energy to shower. The persuading hasn't worked yet.

At 18:42 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Ya'll leave me and Jess alone! She can taste me if she wants to!

I just picked Magic up! He hopped up to eat Venus' food and I didn't think, I just sort of scooped him up and carried him up to his own counter, not sure who was more surprised, him or me!!!

He's like that tho when there is FOOD because you know, all he'd had since breakfast has been icky old dry food.

At 18:55 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Hmmm, Tysie is like that too - you can do almost anything if food is involved. Otherwise, look out for those claws and teeth.

Okay, no more ribbing you and Jess.

I'll be good *cough*

At 19:04 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

There's nothing between me and Jess! Nothing, we're just good friends. Really. Nothing happened. I don't know why she said that.

At 19:13 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

There's nothing to tell. Nothing. Nothing that should worry Mr Jess.

Not ME!!!!

Don't know how the little vixen knows how I taste so good.....

Not quite, er, right.

Sorry, sorry, busy breaking and entering over here.

After dinner, Mum wanted help taking out trash and recycles. She closed the door behind us - the door that frequently doesn't latch at first try - and click, latched and locked. Good thing - it was an inside door, leading to the rest of the basement. Bad thing - the owner had just left to have dinner with the family. Next good thing - there were many tools in the basement. Next bad thing - breaking in with a hammer, screwdriver, and chisel is Hard Work. But I prevailed.

So, um, Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Don't leave home without a chisel!

At 20:56 Anonymous Wendy Withers said...

Also, maybe kippahs (Jewish hats). They sell those at my synagogue, complete with little doodads that fit over their ears.

I need to go to wal mart of all places and get some more barn shorts, and a RED one to wear at the roller derby next weekend. Naptowns colours are red and black.

No pie here either, but I made the best cranberry sauce I have ever done (fresh berries/tangerine juice/honey/brown sugar/mulling spices) and it is somewhat regrettably delicious on ice cream.

I blame Spawn. The "on ice cream" was his idea.

Okay. So we've gone from "NICE ASS" to "BAD ASS." Does this mean we're all just a bunch of asses?

Do we have to change our names to Jack or Jenny?

Maybe we're all wereasses and others should 'ware our asses.

And maybe I shouldn't be left alone on the computer in the middle of the night...

Lovely, replyhazy! Such a perfect quote for this post.

Hello, fiends. I am feeling sad and grateful today, for all the good, loving folks in the world, and for the fact that change never ends.

At 12:25 Blogger Jess said...

Okay. Who wants this vase? I hate it, and will give it away to the first among you to say "Give me that there thing." Otherwise I will smash it with a hammer. Come on: whose treasure is it? Clearly not mine.

At 12:28 Blogger Cecily said...

It's pretty but you should totally smash it with a hammer and then make a mosaic for The Night Garden. ;-)

At 12:37 Blogger Jess said...

Too late. We have a winner!

At 12:53 Blogger Jane said...

I'm getting the vase - it's going to make a great gift!

Isn't Bad Ass a town in the mountains?

At 13:04 Blogger Hellie said...

I have hair envy. Definately bad ass. Also gorgeous.

I would have voted for vase smashing too ;o) I want to make a mosaic-y path in our garden in the spring, going to start searching out plates to smash in charity shops!

At 13:04 Blogger Jess said...

Only on the Discworld, I believe.

Is that a great gift, Sharon, or a "great" gift?

At 13:21 Blogger One Sock Short said...

There's a Bad Ass Coffee Company. It was the *only* good thing in Orlando, when I was forced to go there for a conference in the summer. Though it's actually based out of Hawai'I.

At 13:40 Blogger Jane said...

A gift that can't be beat, IMO.

Definitely will let you know how it goes over (thinking lead balloon which actually is my goal).

At 14:36 Blogger Jess said...

This is probably a bad time to mention that it was a Christmas gift from my parents, isn't it? It's been sitting atop my living room bookcase for something like five years, protected only by a Guilt Barrier. If anyone down the road happens to smash it, I don't actually want to know. Pretend it went to a loving home.

At 14:41 Blogger Jane said...

No smashing planned. Not to worry. Even presents that aren't appreciated don't get smashed - they *may* show up the following year, however, some have made re-appearances yrs later!

At 14:48 Blogger Jess said...

Then let us never speak of it again. As soon as I find a box the right size.

At 20:17 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Damm. Teach me to be lazy. I would have loved that vase.

Magic brought me a toy tonight. He wanted to play. I still get all gooey about the guy.

At 20:22 Blogger Jess said...

Aww! Love when they do that.

I'm sorry, Q. It was the fastest giveaway in the history of giveaways. I've got a stuffed bunny in a skating outfit that you can have, though.

At 20:27 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Ahm that's it, offer me a Bunny when my heart is breaking over a vase...And only the other day you were talking about how good I tasted...

At 20:40 Blogger Jess said...

But it's an ice skating bunny! How can you pass that up? Or an ornate pair of tea strainers? Which my mother pinched from a restaurant and gave to me because, and I quote, "they're sort of British, and so are you"? You could have those. You drink loose leaf?

I am sorry, m'dear. You could always challenge Jane to mortal combat for it.

At 20:48 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Challenge JANE? Are you kidding? She'd kick my no doubt nice ASS!

No, I shall just have to be satisfied with my strange light switch cover you gave me, and console myself with memories.

At 20:56 Blogger Jess said...

Did you ever put it up? :D I want to see where you put it.

At 21:00 Blogger Adri said...

Stolen ornate tea strainers, how could anyone turn those down?

You are chatty, chatty fiends-- I'd ALMOST forgotten. :)

I'm having a relaxing and, at the same time, kind of brain-breaking weekend. Also, I have to figure out what to do with several pounds worth of leftover prime rib. (DARN)

At 21:01 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Adri, you have BENGALS. As many as I do...

At 21:07 Blogger Adri said...

Mine prefer turkey to beef! (They had turkey on thursday. I had steak :D )

I need a shopping decision, fiends! I'm only allowing myself to have one of these pairs of socks, which should I buy:

http://www.sockdreams.com/products/phoebe-over-the-knee

http://www.sockdreams.com/products/over-the-knee/derra-over-the-knee

At 21:09 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Can't help. When it comes to socks, I do not practice moderation. Ever.

My Bengals had steak, they LOVE steak. If I went to bed without the plate of steak bits, ever, I am certain Lear would disown me.

At 21:24 Blogger Jess said...

Stolen tea strainers! For reals! Here they are. Now just try to tell me you don't want those beauties.

It's Adri! Hello!! \o/ I say get the purple socks. I do not like turquoise.

At 21:29 Blogger Adri said...

You shouldn't encourage me. I am bad at moderation in general. Maybe, it would be better to wonder which pair of socks I should purchase first, as I have not worn this brand before and need to determine fit... yes.

Jess-- those tea strainers are certainly unique!

At 21:42 Blogger Jess said...

That's one word for them, yes.

At 22:17 Blogger Jane said...

I *could* give up the vase...I mean, what I'm going to do with it is give it away - but if there is a good home for it where it would be loved...I'm just sayin'.

At 23:19 Blogger Jess said...

And personally, I don't mind who gets it. I just want it out of here.

At 23:30 Blogger Na said...

Beez, that cranberry sauce sounds like a CO waiting to happen.

so - is it weird i think those tea strainers are cool? they also look rather industrial, like they could stand up to straining thousands of cups of tea.

my mom brought us some things from her recent trip to London and Edinburgh. i got a cashmere purple plaid scarf from Scotland, which she bought in Portabello Rd., and my elder monster now has a Dr Who board game.

i'm still in No. AZ and going to a yoga class with a long-time, very dear friend tomorrow. she says it's going to kick my ass. yay! (?)

At 23:34 Blogger Jess said...

Na - The stains would seem to indicate that they have done. Thousands and thousands of cups. But none since their THEFT. I feel like a smuggler.

When did you go to northern AZ? Just for Thanksgiving? Bet you're happy to be down there right now. :)

At 00:00 Blogger Cecily said...

I think the strainers are totally cool too. :-) But I love collecting little things like that. I have a, not so shabby, collection of salt and pepper shakers.

At 00:01 Blogger ariandalen said...

I agree with you, Na, about the industrial nature of the tea strainers. I have come up with a use for them:

Steampunk Pasties

Just add cogs instead of tassels.

Yep. I definitely shouldn't be allowed on the computer late at night.

At 00:05 Blogger ariandalen said...

Sorry to hear about your friend's cat, Sally. Never easy.

On a more cheerful note, while I have no heirlooms like Jess's to give away, I do have a copy of Mr Darcy, Vampyre (Which has all the literary merit you would expect, from the title) and a copy of Summer Knight by Jim Butcher in need of homes.
Any takers?

At 12:15 Blogger Adri said...

I purchased the brown socks with the vine up the back seam and not the teal socks with the pattern all over. Also... eight other pairs of socks and some arm warmers.

Did someone say something about moderation? What's that?

At 12:36 Blogger Beez said...

Glad I got here too late on the sock discussion- not that I would have recommended moderation (what IS that?) anyway.

I love the teas strainers. They would fit nicely in my odd-bits kitchen. Random things find a home here.

Sally, sending love to Ang. So hard a thing.

2. No steampunk pasties. Do you have any idea how heavy those strainers are? Shyeah, like I *need* the extra weight on my tits.

3. I'm sorry, Beez. They'd totally be yours if Ticia hadn't got there first.

4. There is no number 4.

At 13:19 Blogger dabbler said...

Joyeux Anniversaire, Nathalie!

Strange Thanksgiving weekend here. Much thankfulness, some drama (thankfully low key) and some downright nasty unfairness. Off to a viewing this afternoon, but not the one we were expecting.

Mmmm Socks. Counted mine last time I did laundry and cannot possibly need more....which is why I ordered four pair recently.

I, too would have adopted a tea strainer, though the vase looked suspiciously like the one I took to my last white elephant exchange. Were you there in disguise, Jess?

Off to do the right thing.

What do you fiends think, Dawn of the Dead (classic) or Feast? I'm leaning towards the classics, if only because I'm trying to get through zombie canon as I'm writing a zombie comic. Can I say zombie again in this comment?

Leather has a wonderful feel to it that you may wish to have in your kippah. Leather kippot may sometimes be a bit more expensive, so
it's more suited towards single custom orders then bulk ones. Leather is also not a common material you would find in kippot -
it is a little heavier and may not stay on your head as well as satin or silk, which is much lighter.

Purchasing a leather kippot also means you have to maintain it every once in a while, to keep the leather from cracking or breaking.
You can do this with leather treatment chemical that you rub over the kippah every once in a while. If you do this, your leather
kippah can last many years and maintain it's original condition longer.

Some popular leather kippah colors are the following:

White leather kippah

Ivory leather kippah

Silver leather kippah

Black leather kippah (hot item!)

Navy blue leather kippah

Hello, I will start by saying that I am very happy that you have given this boy a home. I am the owner of Sancho Dos, the ALC you have posted pictures of. I would be able to tell you if the F1 you have is his son because I microchip every kitten that leaves my home. Given that information I would also be able to tell you his birthday and mother. It is great that you are educating the public but there were a few things that are not correct. First, a F1 is not wild. This one was obviously not socialized properly after leaving my home. Just like any cat, domestic or not, lack of attention produces a feral cat. Second, F4 doesn't mean there are not considered "domestic" it simply means they can now be shown. Every Bengal has a certain amount of wild (from ALC) and domestic (from our different species domestic cats) F4 is simply required to be shown. My F1 girl, who has been properly socialized is super loving. I could growl at her and she would not care. I can swoop her up and flip her over like a baby. What this particular (the one being discussed on this post) F1 likes or doesn't is specific to him, his experiences, and some neglect I am sure. Again, I am very proud of you for giving him a home and family. Cathy
