Six Months of FIT...The Real True Facts.

My Xmas Tree died yesterday, which is sad, really. I liked that tree. It was all cheerful, here in the dark every morning. I'd gotten USED to it, despite being not much into the Holiday Spirit thing. Our Housekeeper got it for me one year, in an attempt to, well, instill some Holiday Spirit in me. Not sure it worked, but I did like that tree.

I put it out into the cold. It failed to thrive. Has to go. The flowers can grow up around it in the Spring. If Spring ever comes.

(Completely random Bengal Photo, but I like Bengals. Obsessively so.)

It being six months now since I started working out and training, this was meant to be That Sort of blog, complete with amazing measurements and such, but we forgot to do them, and since I can't think of anything ELSE to talk about, we'll wing it.

My friend Daisy suggested I could Blog about Dexter Kitten, the little guy we found in a tree at the bottom of the drive a few months ago, that she adopted, and who is having a "procedure" today, worth a mention, tho not going to cut it (as it were) on it's own. But here is a picture of Little Dexter:

FIT. Right. 6 Months now. Is it working? Yup. Sure is. About 30 pounds now. If you are new here, here's the Plan I'm on: Eat Right and Get Your Butt to the Gym. Will never catch on, I'm afraid, it's slow and it's hard. But it does work. Have I learned a lot? Yup. Sure have.

Here's a few things you should know, should you ever decide to go with this:

1. People will tell you it takes a LONG time. They're right. There's no easy answer. You have to get up every day and go for it. Throw the scale away, it's not your friend. It's too depressing when it goes up a tenth of a pound, after dropping a half.

2. You don't have to do this alone. That was the first thing, Little Evil, who became my trainer a couple months in told me. You also don't need a trainer tho, walk, dance around the dinning room, go to classes at your gym, workout with a friend, whatever. Get inspired. REALLY inspired, find the people who are what you want to be. They will like you. You don't suck, you're out of shape. They had to work just as hard to get where they are now. More than anyone, THEY KNOW how hard this is. And it's REALLY really hard.

I'm kind of extreme, I like intense. That may not work for you. Find out what does.

3. You have to do things when you don't want to. Having classes, riding lessons, training sessions I am scheduled for works for me. All I have to do is Show Up. If you can make yourself do the DVD or go to the gym on your own, great. I can't. You aren't going to "feel like it" often. Suck it up.

4. You will fail. You aren't GOING to be perfect, no matter how hard you try. Fail then. And get up the next day and succeed. You can wake up one morning and wonder how you got this out of shape, but you aren't going to wake up one morning and find out you are FIT again.

5. Afraid? Scared? Don't want to be the fattest person in the gym? I was. All of that. I'm not now. What do you think people are going to say? "She's so fat what is she doing in the gym?" What do you CARE? In six months you won't be the fattest. You can't start sooner than NOW. It happened. I got fat. Not FIT. We can fix this.

6. It does get easier. You will make it thru the workouts. You will come home so tired that late night eating is no longer a problem, you will fall into bed at 9 (ok, or earlier) and sleep like the dead. Easier or not you will HURT. You will start to like this and in fact, it will feel normal. I am dead serious here. Every time you hurt, you will be stronger.

No more numbers. I'll just tell you:

What if someone told you that you could get everything you ever wanted? Every dream you ever had could come true? How hard would you work for that? What would you do?

Anything?

Uh-huh.

That's what I've learned.

Couldn't post this six months ago:

Can now.

Love and FIT,
Lorraine

oops, i should probably actually check the damn box then huh?!

You DO look awesome, but IMO the important thing is that you feel, better, you're reaching goals, you have a plan and the plan's working.

In sad news a good friend (my age!) died unexpectedly of probably pneumonia last weekend and we are still reeling from the shock. No good-bye, no closure. We didn't even know he wasn't feeling well; no one did.

Those of you who follow me on Twitter have already heard all this...

He had 3 Siamese cats - and it fell to me to find them homes. As of today, the 2 younger ones, 22 and 5 mos old, are going to a foster home and will be adopted out as a pair. That is good because they have bonded. The 10 yo will probably be happy to see them go :-) He is going to his forever home in VA, to someone who is losing her "old man cat" this weekend and she wants this one. Intensely.

I am relieved and sad about the cats, oddly. When they are settled and happy in their new homes I will be all relief and no sad.

At 09:45 Blogger Lyndyn said...

Well...that was rather marvelous, I must say. Not to mention timely. I read it sitting in my mom's chair in her house in Florida. She is not here. Or my step-dad. She had a stroke last year and he passed away two months later. The last year has totally side tracked me from...everything, really. Writing, friends, FIT...life. So, now, mom's in a nursing home back in Ohio, and I've come down to clean out their house so I can put it on the market. Sad, lonesome business this. Should have done this already, but it just seemed so presumptuous a thing, to start throwing other peoples stuff out (tossing, donating, selling, all that) and I hoped for a long time mom might get better...

at any rate, 2010 was a hard year and it's left me feeling old, tired and very Not Fit. This trip was already, in my head, the break between The OLD Bad Year and The New Let's See What We Can Do With It Year. A week of wallowing, and crying, and ice cream for dinner and then...doing what I can to feel not so old and tired and sad. And, that all comes down to FIT, really. Eating (some meds I take make it hard to est for most of the day...but 500 cals a day is no better than 5000, really...maybe worse, some say,) sleeping (four hours a night is evidenly Not Good For You) and...moving this divine vehicle I have been gifted with...and all this was in my sad, overloaded brain when I read this blog and I thought, I wonder if Fablo is aware that the Universe/angels/Fods/Gods/God was whispering in her ear a message for me this morning?

At 09:51 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Thank you, everyone.

I am aware, I am aware Lyndon. It was really hard to write, and it's really hard to put out there. I'm doing it for me, but also, if it's not too arrogant, if I can inspire anyone, show anyone how worth it this IS, it will be worth it tenfold to me.

Joan of Dark, yes, I am so going to get into your pants.

(did I just SAY that???)

i love the fit posts, they are inspiring.
i'm trying to eat better. i'm trying to move more. i did a groupon for some yoga casses, now i need to redeem it. i will do that. and really start doing focused moving, not just walking to my car parked 2 blocks away at work.

At 10:32 Blogger Cecily said...

Quiche, it's totally not arrogant. It's True. You are inspiring many of us. And 30 pound sin 6 months is amazing and wonderful and I am so happy for you. Rock on \m/

At 10:41 Blogger Arwenn said...

Thank you so much for reminding us that it is HARD and that's okay, it can still be done. I'm in the first three weeks of a program so I'm at the negative I-hate-this-why-am-I-doing-this stage and while it is working, some pounds are gone, my clothes aren't fitting differently or anything yet, and I don't FEEL different yet. I know once that starts to happen it will be so much easier to stay on task.

Anyway, reading about everyone is incredibly helpful and reminds me of why I am doing this.

At 10:46 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Arwen, when I was exactly 3 weeks in, I wrote nearly exactly that to Joan of Dark. She told me "3 weeks is nothing. Keep going."

She was right. In many ways, the first month IS the hardest.

5 months from now, when you are miles ahead of NOW, you will think "6 months is nothing, give me a year, and THEN you'll see something"

At 10:55 Blogger Arwenn said...

I think one of the biggest changes for me (although I always think it's going to be different this time) is that I'm doing this for me, not because of what other people think - and realizing that I am the only one who can do anything about it and if I don't I'll be the one that stays unhappy.

I'm very glad to hear that the beginning is one of the hardest parts!

At 11:01 Blogger Jess said...

You really do look terrific, Q. Noticed that in the horsie vids from the last post. I am happy you're happy and feeling good. :)

I don't talk much about the changes I'm making, because I'm an introvert. But I will say again: the yoga is the bestest thing I have ever done for myself, and the first thing I've wanted to keep up every day. Including the hard poses that I hate and think might kill me. I guess it's been two months, maybe two and a half? Not that long. But the differences are noticeable, and surprising. Feel so much stronger already. And I know there's time to get stronger still.

Plus my jeans are starting to look like clown pants. Which is nice. Though not particularly fashionable.

At 14:16 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Yoga is amazing, and one does get very strong doing it. Go you Jess!

At 14:36 Blogger Phiala said...

Yay for everyone.

At 15:57 Anonymous Wendy Withers said...

There is a yoga studio here that allows people to help out at the studio and attend classes for free. I should look into THAT. I need to do something for myself and my health.

I've been going to the gym to walk on the treadmill 3 - 4 times a week since the summer of 2007 (I think). As I walked from my car to the door today I thought:

I HATE THIS

I always will. But, I do it. Do I deserve a medal? No. But, it does give me the right to eat a cookie. So, I do it.

I'm not fond of fit.

At 20:18 Blogger dabbler said...

I am fond of being fit...so not of GETTING fit. Not much happening here. I was walking 3-5 times a week. And then it became winter.

Someday it will be spring.

Much appreciation and support for you Lorraine, and everyone else.

At 06:29 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Siri, that's one of the saddest things ever!Hate it is no way to spend 3-4 hours a week. Can you make the treadmill funner? Ipod? Baseball on tv or radio?

Sometimes taking off outdoors with an ipod with an audio book or tunes, is so much cooler. If your treadmill is at home, you can do dvd's.

Something in a group might be funner too. Anything that gets you moving that's fun is the point.

It is sometimes hard to motivate for a workout, but I love it once I'm DOING it. I hate to think of someone hating it. If you lived here, I would entertain you as much as you needed to have fun.

At 08:52 Blogger LihuaEmily said...

You look beautiful! And I know you feel amazing, which of course is part of what makes you look beautiful, and also what counts more than anything.

At 16:18 Blogger Siri said...

Thanks, Q - I read, I watch TV, I close my eyes and think lovely thoughts. I'm entertained. I simply don't like it.

At 17:16 Blogger Fluffy said...

You all have convinced me to try yoga. I can't walk like I used to, but I do need to work on my strength and flexibility. I just hated being the one in class who couldn't bend far, and looked like a beluga whale flopping around.

I read about a studio near here that has REAL beginner's classes. That would be me.

And those two photos - wow. What a difference. And I lol'ed at you getting into Joan's pants.

At 17:18 Blogger Fluffy said...

Oh! And Our Vampi is going to the Discworld convention!! Fiend powers activate!

At 17:56 Blogger vampi said...

Q, you are an inspiration.

To do what works for me, so I started doing weights again. I was one of the two oddball girls in HS that -liked- lifting weights and luckily the wrestling coach let us use the equipment when the team wasn't.
It's interesting how FUN it is to push this body and feel all RAHR!!

.....now, as to cardio and yoga. Uh.

well

.....

I should

At 07:47 Blogger LihuaEmily said...

Also, I heard a bird this morning.

Having a lovely time in Indy. Made the Bout last night just as the first jam was starting, no thanks to the airlines who did their best to see I missed it.

Great skating tho, Naptown won and we had a very nice party afterwards and all the girls are very nice too.

Now Joan of Dark is making me tea and bread and I never ever want to leave.

At 23:55 Blogger Jaime said...

I love you for posting this - you're getting stronger physically and it's so amazing to see how much this sort of thing helps emotionally. I know I definitely need that occasional, "It's worth it - stick with it!" sort of thing particularly stuff like, "If this is what I can do in six months, wait 'til you see what I can do after a year!" I tend to forget that it's an ONGOING process.

I love you forever for your bravery, your stick-to-it-ive-ness, and here's to you, m'dear, getting FIT FOREVER!

At 10:27 Anonymous Wendy Withers said...

I have realized that I do better with FIT when I have money. I'm less stressed and more motivated. I can eat better foods and eat more greens and less crap. When I have to watch every penny, I find myself moving less and eatings things like hamburgers to take off the edge.

At 10:32 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Home now. The Bengals have already found my box of OB T's and are chasing them around happily. I've updated my Coolest Derby Screen Saver EVER and am wondering how much coffee I am going to need to make up for getting up and flying out at 4AM...

Great weekend.

Gym tonight will be interesting, forget seeing 9, I won't see 8...

Got seriously re-inspired tho on my FIT seeing Naptown skate!

At 11:14 Blogger Jess said...

Speaking of Bengals, Erin's Poetry for Cats post in support of GLBR is up! Poems by Sally and ariandalen there, amongst others. *cough*possiblyonebymeaswell*cough*

At 12:44 Blogger spacedlaw said...

You gave her Alice! How great is that? But I notice Erin took a kitten picture which is not a Bengal picture (just stray kittens Lorraine had fostered for a while - Hope kittens possibly?)

At 13:02 Blogger gaypet said...

Good timing, this! I needed a pick me up. I had a week of over-eating and no time to work out. I have been feeling like I just can't do it. Of course I can. But it's good to hear it from someone else. :)

Back to it. Having such a long way to go is the hardest part.

Oh, and, you look GREAT!

At 13:03 Blogger Jess said...

Yeah! I'm pleased that poem has a home now somewhere other than my defunct blog. From which I believe I actually deleted it. So it was homeless. Till now. Like a rescued bengal! It all fits.

Erin will want to know which picture. Surprised she hasn't turned up here yet, ackshally. Eeeeeeerrrrriiinnn! Come out, Erin.

GAYLE!! \o/

At 13:07 Blogger Sarah Stonich said...

Your attitude is spot on. It's NOT easy, and it is slow, but there is much to be said for perseverance.

At 13:15 Blogger gaypet said...

Wendy, I have the same issue. When the pantry is full and I have a little cash I eat less. It seems reasonable that human evolution plays a part here. If you are not sure where your next meal is going to come from then eating the available high calorie food in front of you would feel like the right thing to do.

At 13:22 Blogger gaypet said...

Audio books! Yes. They do make the walking better. And there are a lot of them in the public domain here.

Norton Antivirus 2010 and Norton Internet Security 2010 are designed for use in Windows 7. Norton Antivirus 2009, Norton Internet Security 2009 and Norton 360 version 3.0 can all download a compatibility update through the Internet to make them compatible with Windows 7. I'd really recommend getting the latest version, i.e. NAV2010 or NIS2010 to be sure.
