Skating, Goals and 30 Seconds of Bengals...

Here's a Scott Thomas photo from the Bout the other night. You can view the full set HERE, and you should, wonderful photos, my own personal Derby Screen Saver got WAY cooler. I have a LOT of great Derby photos on that Screen Saver (Thank You Tom Klubens and Marc Lebryk!) but I am not yet used to the thrill of seeing the women I skate with pop up. And "Thrill" is exactly the word. I tend to actually CHEER. Which amuses the Bengals to no end.

One thing I would like to say today is, yes, I did get hurt skating last Sunday, but I did it my ownself, with no help from anyone. I was off balance and landed hard on my, er, butt. My fault, been told often enough, STAY LOW, and it's not a lesson I will ever forget again. It's not broken, just really bruised, and Joan of Dark says it happens to everyone, it hurts, but it's not fatal. It will keep me out of action for a week or so, then I'll be fine and back working out, riding and skating.

Could have happened just the same to anyone skating at an open skate, or sidewalk. Could have happened riding, could have happened slipping on the ice this winter. And who hasn't missed a step and gone down the stairs? Unfortunate, but in no way a Derby injury.

The point is, you can get hurt at any time, doing anything. Whatever. Never never never give up and never let it stop you from doing each and every little thing you have ever wanted to do. Whatever it IS you want, you need to go out and GET IT. The second you start thinking "Well, I want to, and will, but can't now because (Inset whatever)" or "I'm way too scared to try..." STOP it right then, and GO DO IT.

You might fail. WHATEVER. I did with the bees a couple weeks ago, wanting to handle them without gloves. Couldn't do it. But I sure tried. And I guarantee you, you will feel better about yourself for having tried. Skating, getting FIT, writing, music, making art, what ever your personal goals are, they aren't going to be EASY, nothing worth it IS. And the next time: You may well win.

Even if you have to sit with an ice pack on your butt for a week.

There. That's my wisdom for the day.

Here's some Bengal Vid for you to enjoy. Sadly, I had the tv on when I went to try this, and not my cool morning music. Tried to re-shoot this morning, with a proper soundtrack, but all three Bengals looked at me and went to nap, en masse.

That happens sometimes.

Love and Living,
Lorraine

Cat wrassling is fun.

Yes...you can fall on your ass anytime...like walking down 2 steps out of a bathroom. Your foot can just decide to fly forward instead of planting itself firmly on the next step and you can end up quickly sitting on the edge of one of said steps. You could do this Sunday night after dinner. You could have a big bruise on the right side of your butt. Not speaking of personal experience here at all.

Love the bengal wrasslin'!

Pudding wrestling? Magic may have invented a new sport!

It's true that injury can come at any time. I was brushing my teeth in December and ended up partially paralyzed when a disc in my back just ruptured. *pop* I am healing, slooooooowly, which is exasperating because I'm very active. So I feel your pain, figuratively and literally! Good wishes for a quick recovery.

At 10:25 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Hey, Chantrelle, have you contacted the Derby Lite folks here? If not, you might need to in order to use the name. The founders set it up as an LLC, and I know they want to pursue franchises, but I don't know what that means in business/legal terms. Filling out the "I want Derby Lite in my town" form they have on their website should get you that information, if you haven't done so already.

Holy crackers, is that MAGIC wrestling like a real cat?!!!! I R so happy for him/them/you.

Sorry about your butt, though, ow.

At 11:39 Blogger spacedlaw said...

But Magic IS a real cat. A big one but a real cat nevertheless.

OSS - I have filled out the request, as have a couple other gals in santa Cruz, but we haven't heard back. I was going to call it something different just get something rolling on our own...I was waiting for awhile but I know it will take a bit of time for everyone to get gear, etc so didn't want to put it off any longer.

Yes, easy to hurt oneself without derby/wheverelseyoulike doing. And anyhow, if you love something, and get pleasure from it, it's worth risking the odd injury.

And thank you for the Bengal video. I've not had a good day, and it was very cheering. So happy to see Magic out and playing without being scared.

At 14:16 Blogger Bridget said...

Magic and Venus. Playmates wrestling. That is happiness, right there.

Not my personal best day here either. Been a long one. Pain in my butt, literally and figuratively.

Home now. SO far, Mim has peed on me, the couch and the floor. Okkkkkkk...

I haven't commented on the, er, situation going on between my Boss and DORK, because I am, in all things, a professional, and I do appreciate your restraint in staying off the subject.

Very courteous to me you are my Fiends.

Of course, if you DID, or WANTED to, well, I certainly couldn't do anything about it, I mean, I'm not going to BLOCK anyone for expressing opinions on dorkface....

(have at it, if you wish to)

At 17:40 Blogger Chantrelle said...

Oh boy...here we go.

I am amazed that people like that can make it into high-ranking political seats but at the same time, am sadly not surprised at all. There's a great line always used on The Office (the US one) talking to the blonde accountant chick...she's dating a senator and a coworker always corrects her and says, "State senator, not a real senator."

We all know that boss is such a jerk that does no charity work or good deeds. He never goes out of his way for anyone, such a selfish one he is.

WTF? I have to stop myself when I start talking about him to people or I begin to gush. It's really ridiculous. The poor man doesn't even frickin' sleep or eat he's so damn nice to people and can't say no!! Hell, that's your job Lorraine! ;-)

Sorry, didn't mean to go off there. Well, yes I did.

At 17:44 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Go off, I don't mind....We must all have a place to express ourselves, you know.

Inspiring blog, as always. And Go Team Bengal!

Neil has a big heart and a wonderful assistant who do generous things for other people, even those suffering from horrible diseases (i.e. Me). They make wishes come true. That is charity.

At 17:57 Blogger Marjorie said...

It staggers me that he keeps digging himself deeper and deeper into a hole.

I'd never even HEARD of the Twit til now, now I want to move to Minnesota just to vote against him..
I don't claim to be up on US politics, but i'm reasonably sure that a Republican arguing against capitalism is a wee bit odd, too..

I LOVED Boss's final answer in the City Pages interview, although I can see that for you having to field everyone wanting comments it makes for a busy day. After all, you probably have to help your boss steal candy from a few babies, and grind the faces of the poor a bit, as well as everything else..

At 18:09 Blogger AletaMay said...

Tick for now. Much more to say later.

At 18:43 Blogger Dragonsally said...

"After all, you probably have to help your boss steal candy from a few babies, and grind the faces of the poor a bit, as well as everything else.."
Marjorie, you really cracked me up with that.
Sounds like more has happened overnight (my time) Looks like I have some fun reading ahead of me while I jeer at jerk and cheer on Boss.

I love the video of Magic and Venus wrestling -and they're being so gentle with each other!

Hope your poor butt is feeling a little better Q.

Well, I did go off, rather at length, and then Blogger ate my comment. BUGGER.

I was going to get pithy and acerbic about overgrown adolescents posing as mature politicians...but instead I went to help my tearful mo-in-law clean out her deceased husband's desk. And besides, Boss has said it all.... the dork in question is in the position of using a water pistol against a pinpoint targeting laser when it comes to wars of words.

Really...his MOTHER made him apologize. Wonder who is telling him what he believes.

At 21:28 Blogger dabbler said...

Sleeping in would be so nice....not happening here though. I am technically three people today (2 co-workers are out sick) and yet this does not entitle me to a three hour lunch :(

WeaselGate is a puzzlement - I mean uncharitable is absolutely the last thing anyone would associate with Boss. But it is making for some entertaining reading.

I hope someone else says something even dumber so that the media can move on and bother a different fabulous assistant!

Looking forward to a lazy weekend now. This was a short, but stressful week. I am glad to see the back of it.

Cecily- same here.

Needless to say there was a conversation about *cough* misplaced expectations ie: theirs.

Such as Spawn stumbling out to the kitchen and mumbling "I'm hungry" on Sunday late morning.

Could I leave such an opening alone? Moi?

No I could not. :P

Later I had the immense good fortune of being able to hear them (in the mancave) discussing Holidays We Should NEVER Forget.
Quite funny.
....and the house was cleaned and the lawn was mowed by the time I came home from work today.

Quichie, how's that FINE ASS of yours doing?

Also, re: DORK- I quite like pencils too.

My ire has been spent on other (more local) venues where DORK may actually hear/read them.
Just shows to go ya, there really ARE idiots everywhere.

At 20:28 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

My FINE ASS is skating tomorrow! It will be fine as long as I don't land on it again.

At 20:34 Blogger Beez said...

Q- the latest from MPR News on the WITS thing read (to me) as a preemptive jab on the part of MPR directly AT the Dork.

And we do NOT need another gorram stadium. We are not such a huge market that we need a new one for each team, in ADDITION to helping pay multi-bazillionaire team owners for the privilege!

how can i put this, i believe your dork face is confusing his mouth with his colon. seems to be a common problem amongst politicians of all flavors.

maybe they should shop around if they don't like the price. they can get some bargin basement speakers i'm sure, maybe "snookie" is available, i hear she's on the nyt best seller list, well for at least a day she was.

At 20:40 Blogger Cecily said...

There are so many problems with the dork, I'm not even going to chime in at this moment because I can't prioritize them.

At 22:05 Blogger Jess said...

Here is stalker wife. I spent the day varnishing bits of wood and being glum. Hello.

I did a whole big rant about Dork, and how it's about more than Dork, and attacks on arts funding and what people value and blah blah blah. Then Blogger ate my comment. I took it as a sign and have kept my mouth shut since. But I will say this: yeah, like the Big Man says, political football. Bigass stadium, eh? Mmmhmm. It's gas drilling over here. Bastards.

At 22:26 Blogger AletaMay said...

:sigh:

I've been composing an LJ post in my head about this whole dork situation for the past few days. Hope I get it done some day. Key points:

1) I feel kinda protective of Q and her boss - Q is my friend I hate the hassle this must be - so the whole thing makes me sad on that front.

2) Q's boss is being cynically used by said dork as part of what I see as a very calculated political attack on government funding for the arts in MN. This is a very sad thing IMO on so so many fronts and, if successful, will have an impact bigger than you'd think.

3) The blog post of Q's boss that was lifted in full and posted on dork's website was titled (by dork) Your Tax Dollars at Work. That was one of the phrases panted on the walls of the infamous "Degenerate Art" show created by the Nazis to mock some of the most influential artists of the early 20th century. They used this show to stir up people in the same way. Chilling.

There is a totally legitimate debate to be had about how the legacy fund $ should be spent but that is not what this guy is trying to do - he just wants to get people riled up about the issue in a way that makes the fund empty in one way or another.

OK. I'll shut up now.

In better news the afternoon here was very springlike. Yay!

At 22:35 Blogger vampi said...

someone on his staff wrote him a cool soundbite, that bit back.

as i understand, the tax payers voted for this money to be spent exactly as such. paying the going rate for a first rate celeb is not unreasonable use of funds. also, it's still posted and freely available for continued enjoyment.

yes i am totally biased, but i would be just as irritated by such a stupid topic by any politician.

this was just made even more distasteful in that he picked on someone who isn't a politician in a political fight.

aleta, i am also really bothered by the language being used in this fight and also in other budgetary matters, be it npr, or labor unions. the whole immigration debate can't even be called thinly veiled racism, it's ball out racism. i'm just so disappointed in all flavors of elected oficials for carrying on like this. it really turns my stomach.

At 22:47 Blogger AletaMay said...

Yup Vampi, we voted to raise our own taxes to fund this stuff. Made me proud to live here. Now not so much.

Also -- those words were PAINTED on the walls, not panted. That would just be weird, even for the Nazis.

At 22:59 Blogger Dragonsally said...

I'm missing a lot of this, being in an other country and all, but reading what's happening is making my blood boil, politicians attacking someone who isn't in politics especially. Grrrr. And grrrr magnified a thousand fold because of who is being attacked and what Q must be having to put up with.
Its our Federal Budget tonight...tomorrow the papers will be full of all sorts of ill-informed comments bashing migrants, the unemployed, those of us who can't work because of disability, the arts, the sports - you name it. *sigh*

At 23:00 Blogger Dragonsally said...

So today, twitter reminded me that Rome might be (or not) destroyed by a major eathquake tomorrow, care of a prediction made by an old geezer going by the name of Raffaele Bendandi (1893-1979).

His theory was based on planet alignements (think of earthquakes as earth tidal movements).
Violently disputed, of course and the keepers of his records actually say that no actual place was actually named in conjunction with the date of 11 May 2011 (he also has major earthquakes planned for April 2012).
But it keeps the interwebz buzzing.
In particular because the guy predicted the 1925 earthquake six months before and he was just 2 days off in his prediction...

So I might die tomorrow (or not) and I am totally out of cheese. The horror! Thank goodness, I have plenty of booze available to compensate.
