I Know What To Do Now. And Know It is Right.

I have been doing a lot of thinking these past couple of weeks. The kind of thinking you need to do sometimes when you have to decide something that is going to effect you for a long time to come. And last night I came, not without regrets, to a decision, and wrote to Janet, head of Great Lakes Bengal Rescue and resigned as a Foster Home.

I don't have the room.

The good news is that The Royals, King Lear the Huge and Little Queen Mab have found a home. A Forever Home.

With me.

The more I read the blog I wrote, looking for a home for them, the more I thought: That is me they are looking for.

I have been looking for myself.

And I think I have found it.

It's a little nuts, I admit, but it feels so very right, I can't deny it. Sometimes listening to that voice within is hard, but if you do, it will become REALLY clear.

The Sanctuary exists for Cats of all kinds Wild, who have NO other options. Lear is not aggressive with me, has no Pee issues, and trusts me somewhat. Sending him to Sanctuary would break that trust and send him to live in a place where he WOULD be safe, but never know love of a person, and if they went, would deny two cats who had NO other options a place.

I can't do it. Break that trust and send him away, making him someone else's problem, simply because I don't want two more Bengals and don't want to be bothered? And exactly HOW do I look myself in the mirror after doing that?

Yes, he is an Early Gen Bengal who may never be ok, may never trust completely, and will be a lot of work. But they do HAVE an option, and it might well be I can do a lot for them. Might well be I am meant to.

I think at some point, everyone has to stand up and be counted, and how you will be counted means everything.

If you have to do something because it's the right thing to do, you need to do it, or be counted among the "I can't be bothered."

That's not me.

I can help in so many ways still. The Twitter I did about the Boy in the Michigan Shelter who was going to be put down, resulted in someone driving 4 hours to save him. He got adopted last weekend.

My "Fiver for Hope Plea" resulted in monies to pay vet bills for a dumped kitty and her kittens, all of whom have homes now. I still have over $400 AFTER paying vet bills, ALL of which will go to saving Kitties who cross my path.

My "Any Amount Any cd's" promotion (which is an offer that is still in effect, by the way) where people send monies to GLBR in exchange for my cd's raised huge $$ for GLBR, at a time when they needed it badly. Send something, drop me a note. I send cd's.

I can't Foster any more Bengals, keeping the Royals, but maybe someone will read this, and decide to become a foster home and help. To make up for them losing me. Most Bengals we get are lovely, have no issues and easily find homes.

Maybe someone will see this and want to help too. And send GLBR something, in celebration of King Lear, and his Friend, Queen Mab, finding a home. A token, a dollar. Five. Doesn't matter what amount, just something to say you care too, and want to be counted.

donate@greatlakesbengalrescue.com

There's a saying"When the Gods close a door, somewhere they open a window." Today, I closed the door between the floors in my house.

And opened the door to the room where the Royals have been living.

Because this is their home.

Love and I have two new Bengals,
Lorraine

Oh, Quiche, it's all lovely - the Royals being home, the Hope for Lost Kitties fund, the money you raise for the Rescue.

It is, quite honestly, a great honor to know you and your huge heart.

As much as it must hurt to know you won't be physically helping any more Bengals, I'm glad you made the decision to keep Lear and Mab. :)

I know I don't comment as much as some of the girls, but I DO read and you talk about them the way some of us talk about our kids. I'm glad they found their person! (And that she finally realized it ^_~)

Oh yay! I'm so very happy for you and for them and wish you all the best.

And yes, you'll still be able to do a lot of good for Bengals and other cats, which is awesome.

I can't think of what to say. So I'm going to steal words from Firefly.

Amazing! I'm so happy for you!

I should admit that I'm already emotional, but this made me all teary. For what it's worth, I think you made the absolute right choice.

Those cats have the best chance with you. You've given them a home and love. That's a real gift.

Also, it was great to read all the bits about people helping--the Fivers etc. It's good to see good things happen, because awareness is raised.

Congrats on making this choice, Lorraine. You have a large heart, and it's just so damn admirable.

i'm so glad you found the answer. i know it was weighing on your heart so much.

you have so much good in your heart and inspire so many people.

thank you. :)

This news made me happy as I so wanted The Royals to be home even knowing it would stop future fostering. But I felt so guilty because I wanted them to stay as I know it means so much more work and space involvement for Lorraine. She has been and will continue to be so much more than just a foster home for GLBR. Her heart is huge and she has shared so much with us including her fiends - I thank all of you too. You have all taken GLBR into your hearts and I appreciate that so much. Sometimes this job can drag you down a bit but coming here is nice and makes me feel good. And if anyone wants to see any of our new fosters just mention it here and I'll send Lorraine some pictures and she can post about them once in a while. Thank you Lorraine.

hey sweetie-i am sure that it was a difficult decision, but the king and queen will have happy and lovely lives because of it. buster would have been put down due to his heartworm-but has now become a (expensive :) part of our family. bless you and your work! i am a broken record, missing all of you, and so sad i could not attend fiend weekend! Nicest side effect ever, Dan, that astral projection. Glad you've got something to help.

{{Ani}} Glad you're on the mend too!

We are finally... back in Edmonton. Can't say it feels like home. So maybe it's a foster city for us, until we figure out where we need to go.

The way it works is this:

Mim wants to be with Magic on HIS Screamed Porch.

Venus thinks Screamed Porches Suck and wants to be outside on a leash.

There is another door (my Spooky House has doors everywhere) from the stairs to the Scream Porch.

Hans puts a cat door in and the Royals go out.

Wow. Sniffles. I'm so happy for them, and I hope it feels good to you after you get used to them being "yours." And I think you do more for homeless cats on this blog than 99% of us ever manage for any needy group.

Happy Birthday, Gayle! And GRACE! I saw you! And Sue. I feel like Dorothy - "And you were there, too!"

I'm mostly packed for Cape Cod - should be an adventure - my friend Susan invited me, which is so cool. Tomorrow we're both flying in on different flights but she has to detour buy a car between Boston and her parents' house. I have to take the Falmouth bus from Logan and hope the universe aligns to get us together. Cellphone charged! Will see if I can borrow someone's wireless while there - if not it's off to the local cafe. Bye!

Ms. Fabulous, I knew you would make the best decision for yourself and the Royals. I'm glad you're at peace with your decisions. Brava!

Ani, glad you are on the mend!

Dan, oxycodone is good drugs! I have to admit, I've never had hallucinations or felt odd while taking oxycodone; however, it did do a good job at killing the pain. Hopefully, you won't have to take it for long.

Happy Firbday, Gayle! Have a wonderful, fun-filled day without worries! :)

Na, glad you and your family are safely back at your current abode. ;) You're always welcome to come back to Texas. :)

No, you are most certainly not among the "can't be bothered." Even if you had decided that the sanctuary was the best place for the Royals, you would not be in that number. I am glad for you and the Royals that you have arrived at the decision that feels right to you. That's a good place to be; and you deserve to be there.

ARRRRRGGGGG!!!!!

Feeling the need to vent a little, if no-one minds.

I just spent almost 6 hours in court (and this was a hearing listed for 30 minutes, mind) I swear, they need to give me the power to physically bang people's heads together. They really do.

And as for "yes, I know we just spent 1 1/2 hours talking about this and then 45 minutes with the Judge summarising it but I've changes my mind and so I've just 'realised' I didn't really undestand and want to go back to square one, please, only this time can we say that the compromise we just reached is your stanrting point so we need to compromise between that and my starting point..." (I am paraphrasing slightly)- ....words (almost) fail me.

I wouldn't mind, this is my job, after all, but there are young kids in the middle of this.

OK. I feel a little better for having let that out!

I am SO happy for you. I really think it's the right decision. As I posted when I "delurked" before - I'm fostering kitties that can't go anywhere else and they are now home too. It is a hard decision to move from part-time to home, but sometimes saying "they are home" is what is best.

I'm really glad you kept Lear and Mab -- there will always be fosters, but Lear and Mab now have forever and someone to understand them.

We need to have a door opening party! I look forward to reading the updates and congratulations on the expanded family.

That's when you need to be making bread by hand and some heavy duty kneading. Or go to a gym and punch sand bags.
That might save you from the temptation of bashing silly people's head about - so tempting and yet not advisable as they are never worth the trouble that this impulse would get you in.

What a great thing to get to the point where a decision is made and you know it is the right one for you. I love the way all the doors and windows have opened and closed in a way that gives everyone a real home.

At 13:20 Blogger mistressmousey said...

About 12 years ago, my parents were catless and went to the local shelter to get a cat. They found the perfect kitten to take home, but who was part of a set. The mother was a former house-cat, very abused, who had taken to the streets to live. A more overprotective mother I've never seen.

When they brought the pair home, mama cat would hide her kitten from my dad because (we figured this out over time) she had been kicked or stepped on repeatedly by a man and didn't want to repeat the experience. She would hide under furniture, but wouldn't climb on anything - she wouldn't even approach close enough to mark a leg of the couch as her own with her whiskers. You couldn't wear shoes around her. For a long time, you had to sit or lie still on the floor and wait for her to come out of hiding, approach to sniff (if you were a woman) and then run away. She hardly ever meowed, then only in pain or distress, and so quietly that you could hardly hear her.

Fast forward 10 years.

Hana still runs at the first sign of strangers, and she doesn't like it when people wear shoes around her. She's still wary of men, but will allow my dad to exist in her presence. But in almost every other way, she's a new cat with a new life. She will jump up on the couch with my mom if urged to. She loves to approach her for a scritch. She actually meows now, a lot (not sure if this is entirely a plus for us, but it sure is for her). No, she's not a typical cat, and she never will be, but with a lot of love and patience, she came around to be one of the most vocal and loving beasties my parents have ever shared their lives with.

You are doing a wonderful thing for the Royals, and I bet over time Lear will come around a bit more. He'll never be a typical housecat. He'll probably never be a typical bengal. But he'll know love and trust in you, and that will give him a new life.

Keep being amazing!

Marjorie, my dear, my heart goes out to you as well. Physical mayhem is so tempting, and utterly impossible, but creative fantasy can sometimes fill the need. I'll trust your imagination, since I don't know enough about the details, but I have, on occasion, pictured such people faced with all the Grimm's tortures...sorting grain from ashes (without the help of mice,) attempting to spin straw into gold, etc. with the delicious outcome for failing. Lear and Mab came to the top of the stairs when I called them! Next week Hans will make a cat door for them. To the Scream Porch, so they can go out.

Long lovely much work day, but I did an interview on Bees for MPR with the Birdchick which was really fun. Odd too. The reporter, one of them, was REALLY scared of bees! And it got worse for her as we tended them.

As opposed to first timer Beth, who started out scared but determined not to show it, and ended up LOVEING it. The look of wonder people get the first time the hand feed bees honey with no gloves is pure magic!

I went back and read the part of your blog on Bengals and what did I find, but this:
"I have two EG fosters, one of whom will never be able to go to another home, and it has taken me months to get him to come out."
See, you knew it then. King Lear was yours and you were his.

At 21:20 Blogger Cecily said...

You are fabulous, and inspiring. Congrats on listening to your inner voice and acting on it. That is not something that everyone can or does do.

At 21:28 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Sally. but them for ME!!!!!!

You have to listen to that inner voice, it's the one speaking truth.

Lioness, that was Magic I was talking about, he was the foster I knew when I took him that he was staying. If he had claws, he would be in sanctuary, as he would not be safe, and would have done me serious damage.

he is NOT a pet. F1's need REALLY careful handeling when young to make pets, and even then, it's not for the faint of heart, or innocent.

I don't knwo much about the MPR peice, just that it was on Minneapolis Beekeeping and they contacted the Birdchick to see if they could come out to the hives and get bee info.

So they came, and we went, along with AFP
s assistant Beth.

LOVING by the way, this week of Boss, Bosses Girlfriend, and Two Assistants all working together! We make for a fine family, with our Stylin Rockin Teen added in.

As for the week of Bosses and Assistants, it sounds wonderful. It sounded to me as though your boss was enjoying leaving just so that he had AFP to come back to. Young love. ;-)

At 21:50 Blogger Jane said...

Anonymous - so sorry for your loss. I know from sad (and multiple) experiences how hard it is.

Listened to Boss on Talk of the Nation today - yea Batman!

At 21:56 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Okay FabLo, I will buy and send to you...but beware of attack by Bengal hordes chasing those tentacles.

At 21:57 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Young love indeed! They gots it BAD! It's pretty cute. I really like her tho, and she has this habit of playing the piano and singing every day that I could get REAL used to.

I wish Anonymous would come back and talk to us some more, I think she needs to be here, and could use some Fiend love...

I sort of got caught up on work today and missed most of TOTN. Only remembered when someone called and asked for Boss, and I said ah-ha! Here he is and turned on the radio!

At 22:00 Blogger Chantrelle said...

I only caught the last 5 minutes of TOTN. I got in my car after acupuncture and checked twitter on my phone before i left and saw boss's tweet, turned on the radio and ta-da! He was there :)

So sad for Anonymous's loss :(

Ben was a wreck today. He broke down and cried about everything. I think he's tired. He's usually not like this. He's in teh bath now w/ daddy and then off to bed he goes....the reset button!

At 22:05 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Adding my hugs to anonymous. Know what its like to lose a loved cat.

At 22:07 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

You can still hear it on NPR's website...

Me and the Royals are going to sleep soon.

No idea where Venus and Mim are. Hopefully indoors at least.

Gayle--best belated natal day wishes

Anon--BIG hugs, and shared tears. I am so sorry for your loss. If we could only bandage the Casper-sized hole in your heart, you know we would in a second. I deeply regret that it doesn't work that way, but send you healing hopes anyway.

Lorraine--aha! It really did seem like you were looking for *you*....only in another house. That was my take, anyway. And not that further proof of your "one of a kind" status was necessary, but if it was.... Much love to your furry feline household (inc you :))

Back to zombie hood--into the Mine of Mail < five hours...

There are, indeed, a few truly good people in the world, and you, dear Lorraine, are one of them.

Hugs to anonymous. I'm so glad you shared you sorrow here.

Lorraine, I love those moments when a group of people gel into a family. It is a mystic and magical thing. It is a beautiful thing.

Lys! So so good to see you.

At 22:39 Blogger Jess said...

Hey, it's Lys! \o/

Gayle, I didn't realise your hair was bent on world domination. I take it that the buzzing means it's gone and allied itself with the Bengal-Bee Alliance while you slept.

Anon. - Very sorry for your loss. But Casper will have his own personal sunbeam to loll about in, in that great daisy field in the sky. All good cats get one.

At 22:44 Blogger AletaMay said...

Kyle Cassidy has a sad but ultimately hopeful kitty post today. Thought the fiends might be interested.

At 22:47 Anonymous Elizabeth Morgan said...

Having adopted rescue cats, including a difficult one (not a Bengal, but an abused, sick one), I understand how tough the decision was. You did the right thing. I kept reading your blog posts, wondering when you'd figure out that you couldn't let them go.

While I know you say King Lear may never fully adapt to you, never underestimate the power of love. The fact that you kept your word to him -- trust me, he did understand completely -- is a big start. Now he's going to have to settle into it. It might be tough some days, but it will be rewarding, and I do believe that one day, you're going to be amazed by him.

Many, many good wishes to you, and a dose of luck for the cranky days.

At 22:57 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Welcome Se and Elizabeth, and thank you.

Elizabeth, you are very right.

Welcome too to all the new Fiends posting if I didn't say it before, I get pretty busy days, and only chatty at night.

Hi Lys, our Sweet Post Mistress! Glad you dropped in!

Aleta, am off to check this link, I love Kyle!

Oooooooooo...new Fiends!

Hi, Wee Tee, Plumplori, TNTKnits, Ganglare, InkyOrchid, gershwhen, pbsjones, turtle, S. E. Ward, and Elizabeth Morgan! So glad you could join the new Fiendocracy. :) Please pick up your lovely white buckled jacket, and anything you might need to personalize it. White is simply the base color; feel free to change it, if you so desire. :)

Anonymous, please know that we are right here to listen when you are ready to talk/write. Casper will be remembered, even by those of us never blessed with meeting him. You are welcome to a jacket, but there is no pressure to pick one up or time limit. {{{Anon}}}

At 02:58 Blogger Jess said...

Right. It's 3:52 am, and I'm regretting that after-dinner coffee now.

(It had chocolate liqueur in! Surely that cancels out the caffeine.)

Woke after about two and a half hours from bizarre dream in which I had a jet pack. Could not control altitude or speed. Nearly crashed into a fridge. (Why a fridge?) Despite danger and aeronautic ineptitude am pleased to report that personal-jet-pack-propelled flight is pleasant.

Sorry. Go back to sleep now. Unless it's day where you are. In that case, be up.

At 03:09 Blogger spacedlaw said...

You clearly needed more liqueur, Jess.

At 03:12 Blogger Jess said...

Or some of Dan's meds. I'd still be floatin' then.

At 03:22 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Inna fridge? Or dancing tango with a fridge in the dark void of space?
Sounds like a plan.

At 03:24 Blogger Jess said...

Couldn't be in the dark void of space. I haven't got any breathing apparatus. I want to live.

At 03:28 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Don't you worry about the technical details. In space, nobody will hear you breathe hard.

HAL? Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

At 04:29 Blogger Marjorie said...

::snort:: Are you *sure* you didn't get any of Dan's meds, Jess? Maybe he's been astral projecting into you, this time!

Thanks, abbler & Nat OSS for your support. It was just One of Those Days. Sometimes they sneak up on you.

Am insanely jealous of Beth and the reporter for getting to pet the bees...

Must work now.

Failed to vacuum last night, despite imminant arrival of parents, who will probably be home before me. Still, at least I put clean sheets on the bed for them. They can't ask more than that, can they? (especially as they are not actually coming to see *me*)

At 05:09 Blogger LyleD4D said...

I'm glad you've made the decision, Lorraine - and I'd agree, in the context of the Royals, it's definitely the right thing to do.

Of course it's sad that you've had to give up the fostering - but surely this is the next step, proper adoption rather than fostering?

All the best with it, and long may the Royals reign.

At 05:55 Blogger spacedlaw said...

HAL has been scoffing all the supply of liqueur filled chocolates...

At 06:10 Blogger Jess said...

Never did get properly back to sleep, either. Chocolates schmocolates. Now what I really want is a doughnut.

At 08:28 Blogger Jess said...

Well I never! Silence. I suppose everyone's gone away in search of doughnuts. Fear my doughnut-based telepathy. Muhahaha. (Almost as potent as my getting-take-out-Chinese 'fluence.)

At 08:36 Blogger Phiala said...

No, just in a three-hour staff meeting that mysteriously seems to have taken only one hour in the outside world.

I'm not sure I like stretchy time after all.

The donut was necessary to compensate for the energy drain of stretching an hour into three.

At 08:59 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Morning.

Interesting night you've all had.

The Royals got into the Cuddly Bedroom last night. I wasn't going to open that up, but I went in for a book and they followed me in there, like "What the heck is THIS? Who knew! It is OURS!"

Lear slept on the bed in there. On my clothes. Ok.

At 09:05 Blogger Phiala said...

Clean clothes or dirty clothes? By which I mean, clothes that smell like you or laundry?

No surprise, but Steve Earle rocked last night. This tour is a lot more personal and intimate than last time I saw him: Steve, a highly covetable Martin guitar, and a lot of stories and music. The second-row seats didn't hurt either.

At 09:13 Blogger Jess said...

Hey, I didn't want an interesting night. It just happened that way.

This morning it's all about the doughnuts.

How are Venus and Mim taking the usurping of the upstairs? Or don't they know yet?

At 09:18 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Sounds like you have been claimed, Lorraine. Yay!

At 09:39 Blogger Na said...

Yes, this is how Bee-Bengal Alliance inexorably takes over the world (once Gayle's hair has spit it out) -- on the ground, one room at a time, and in the air, claimed through the clever use of wings and buzzing, jet packs and flying fridges.

At 12:18 Blogger Jess said...

I feel I should emphasize that the fridge was not flying. The fridge was stationary. Dream might have been mental, but I've got more sense than that.

At 12:23 Blogger spacedlaw said...

That's because the fridge was the pivotal point of the galaxy you were impersonating at the time.
Maybe you were feeling peckish?

At 12:38 Blogger Ani said...

Hooray for you and the Royals! Much love and congrats on a big decision well made!

At 12:39 Blogger Jess said...

It wasn't pivotal. It was in a corner.

At 12:42 Blogger Ani said...

Thank you all for the wonderful wishes, I *am* on the mend. Surgery went well, and my recovery has been quick. I'm attributing it to the great support I have from friends and fiends all over. :-)

I will be waiting for a while on results of the biopsy, and whether the procedure worked for the other things it was supposed to fix, but I am very optimistic right now.

At 12:49 Blogger spacedlaw said...

It was a cartesian galaxy. Putting th e fridge in a corner is vry cartesian.

At 17:23 Blogger Beez said...

Well, huh. I jumped in to comments-in-the-middle, and saw "Young love indeed!" and "they gots it bad", my first thought (natch) was Magic and Mim.

Noooo, it was teh humans! Silly ol' me.

It looks like the royal two DO know they're HOME now and apparently expanding their domain forthwith. Ooh, AND running to the stairs to relay the next set of Royal Commands to their Faithful Minion.

Anon. and also to Kyle- take comfort in knowing the life Casper and Momcat had was a safe and kind as you could make it. I try to think of that whenever I find a wild thing, even ones that are beyond saving....I will try to make what time they have left not be moments of terror and cold and pain, but as gentle and as safe as I can make them.

Beth of All Trades' blog post on the sparrow she found was beautiful and to the point.... why do it? Because it matters to That One.

At 18:14 Blogger Ani said...

Marjorie--hang in there! It sounds truly frustrating without a doubt. I admire you for your career path, though! I doubt I'd have the patience. So kudos to you!

OK, now I really have to leave work or I'll be in a big creaky warehouse all alone after dark. NOT fun to creep through & lock up. Don't tell, but I always have to run through the warehouse at top speed when it gets this late! shhh!

At 19:08 Blogger Ms T said...

Oh Beez, I'm so glad someone else thought(and did)the same thing! Magic and Mim immediately sprang to mind. In my defence, I started reading part-way through the comments too.

Of course, my next guess would have been the humans...

At 20:13 Blogger Dragonsally said...

Trust the space lawyer to come up with all that technical stuff :D

Really does sound like Royal knows he is home now.

Recovering from late night out at French & Saunders - will write more about it when I am awake enough to make sense. May take several days.

At 22:52 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Home! Very, very tired. The Bengals seem happy tho. Hard to tell. Mim has killed 8 porch moths. Killed and ate. Better than TV.

At 00:36 Blogger Ticia said...

Hi Nathalie! How are you feeling?

At 00:45 Blogger FabulousLorraine said...

Oh, I am off to bed, it's just been a very long week and this is the first time I have had a chance to relax. Well sort of anyway.

I need a few days off I am thinking, or at least, less intense for a couple.

Work goes like that.

At 00:47 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Happy because I can walk once more (in fact yesterday I felt so happy about this that I swear I was positively gliding a good 5 inches in the air).
Still subject to shots twice daily until the 28th July, but I am not complaining (well not too much anyway).

At 00:47 Blogger Ticia said...

Me too. Good night Quiche and Nat!!

At 00:49 Blogger Ticia said...

Yay Nat. That makes me happy. I'll dream of you gliding through the air tonight....

At 01:18 Blogger Marjorie said...

Yay for walking! If you find you do start to fly, Nat, watch out for fridges.

At 08:57 Blogger louisa said...

I appear to have lost my knife, anyone seen it? Without it my books cannot achieve sticker-free nirvana. As far as I know, it is of the non-exploding variety. Perhaps it's with the fridge?

At 09:08 Blogger Ani said...

Glad to hear you're moving about, Nathalie! It all sounds like quite a trial, but it seems to be making improvements for you, so I am happy for that at least.

At 09:09 Blogger Jess said...

As I keep pointing out, fridges are stationary. Also, they do not steal knives. They don't have opposable thumbs and, therefore, can't possibly.

However I am sure Nathalie will manoeuver her jet pack quite competently. She works with engineers. SPACE ONES.

Hurrah for N. not being bedridden any longer!

At 09:13 Blogger louisa said...

I didn't suggest the fridge stole the knife, just thinkin of the mischief the dish and the spoon got up to is all

At 09:15 Blogger spacedlaw said...

You too peel off stickers and price tags from books, Louisa?
I can't stand them.
(good thing my copy of the Graveyard Book is pre-Newberry Medal sticker).

Great bee post over at Sharon's!

At 09:17 Blogger spacedlaw said...

My mother used to have a fridge that ate the clock on certain week mornings (back in those days when one could walk about with the clock - they made the most infernal racket. Maybe the fridge did not like the noise?).

At 09:19 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Lighter fluid works well for removing stickers. An old bookstore trick.

Today is going to be a really long day...

At 09:21 Blogger louisa said...

Too many books suffer death-by-sticker; I take off everything (OFF THE BOOK, get your minds out of the gutter), and clean with a little white spirits to remove any remaining glue. No OCD here, no sir!

Off to Sharon's blog for bees....

At 09:33 Blogger Hellie said...

Oh and those annoying super-sticky security stickers that are sometimes put on CDs, they leave a gunky smear for ages. Nail polish remover, that works for me.

My turn to have a moan. I'm miffed. After a day long conference yesterday I dusted, vacuumed, tidied and made the guestroom beautiful for our friends who are coming to stay. Still need to grocery shop, so thought b/f might go so that I can go out for a drink or 2 with work friends. He has just emailed to say he's going out with the boys at 6pm and will be back in time for our friends arrival late tonight. Serious grrrrr. I will be buying myself a bottle of wine AND some flowers!

Thanks Na, more friends are tying the knot tomorrow, so should have some fun celebrating. And ice cream is a great idea! And probably an episode or 2 of the new Torchwood that I haven't watched yet :o)

OSS it took me a minute to spot, Love it! Our office now has a clear desk policy, I even had to take my pet rock home. He lives in the bathroom now.

At 10:17 Blogger Phiala said...

Clear desk policy? Great way to improve morale.

At 10:18 Blogger One Sock Short said...

Hellie - That's such a bummer. Most of us spend most of our waking hours at work. Having a few things in our workspace to cheer us doesn't hurt anyone, and can even be motivating. It's a shame your higher-ups fail to understand that.

At 10:22 Blogger Hellie said...

Yep we all complained about it but the higher ups think its a great idea, because it supposedly saves money. I'd put a considerable bet on that in a few years a memo will go round, saying 'new policy - everyone can have their own desk and they are allowed paper again'

OSS I just started following you on Twitter (I'm pilgrimhelen on there, Hellie was already taken!)

At 10:27 Blogger spacedlaw said...

Clear desk? What is this?
You mean there is a clear desk under the piles of tumbling papers? Who knew?

Hellie. You so deserve flowers. And a drink.

At 10:34 Blogger Hellie said...

Ha my piles of papers get stuffed into a locker at the end of the day. And sometimes land on my foot when I open the door the next morning.

Hee hee I am going to take all your advice and really pamper myself. Flowers & ice cream & wine. And Captain Jack ;o)

At 10:35 Blogger Phiala said...

Hellie, that's even worse than I thought! I would never ever get anything done. My long-term projects (most of them) need their own spots on my desk!

At 10:43 Blogger Jess said...

Oh, don't you just love management and their bright ideas! Feh, I say to that.

Did someone say ice cream? Chantrelle just tweeted this roasted peach ice cream recipe. Ooh err missus.

So I broke down and made myself some coffee after literally weeks of rigorous forebearance. Now I got me a big ol' mug of forbidden bliss. \o/

At 10:53 Blogger Na said...

Clear desk policy - sounds horrid and stupid, and waaaay beyond Dilbertland.

At 11:48 Blogger vampi said...

clean desk policy? do you share desks?

Today is my and Dan's 17th anniversary, and he's still in Boulder. It's okay, I just miss him. He'll be home Sunday.

OSS, I love your work area, and I see your yarn-con card, too. I have a button from last year. Met Franklin there, thank heavens he didn't have Delores with him (Delores being his, um, cartoon sheep, for those of you not in those knitting circles)

Why are health insurance companies and the billing department of health providers such a PITA to deal with?!

At 14:36 Blogger ariandalen said...

Hi, SarahZone! Thou art now a Fabulous Fiend! Grab, or make, a buckled jacket and personalize away. :)

Ticia, "Off the Mark" is hysterical! I really did LOL! :)

Love it, OSS! I find it amusing that no one has noticed, yet. I think you should keep a running count for how many days it takes before someone actually says anything. It may take until October. Then again, it may take longer. ;)

Hellie, sounds like you have a plan, and are implementing it. Have fun! :) It's really a shame that your company's higher-ups are more concerned with making life easy for the cleaning crew than the mental well being of their greater workforce. :P

Glad you're doing better, Nathalie!

Keeping my fingers crossed on the biopsy, Ani. :)

At 14:51 Blogger Hellie said...

We don't have our own desks, apparently it's called 'Hot Desking'. This equals lots of desks and very little storage. Pain-in-the-ass-desking I call it. In reality my little 'team' has 4 desks and 4 people, so guess what, we sit in the same places every day anyway!!

I now have cherry frozen yoghurt and a bottle of rose wine (well half a bottle now)

Happy Anniversary DG!! I did run into Captain Jack in Marks & Spencers a coupla months ago (& yes I did go all wibbly), if I see him again I'll grab him and post him to you ;o)

At 15:37 Blogger ariandalen said...

I think "pain-in-the-ass-desking" is an appropriate term. Sounds to me like the people you work for don't worry about employee retention.

Rose wine and cherry vanilla ice cream sound like a pretty good combination to me. :)

At 15:51 Blogger Hellie said...

Mmm yes it's a very good combination, I highly recommend it!

The scary thing is the higher ups think they've done a great thing for us lowly ones and keep going on about how we are 'embracing new ways of working'. Sigh. At least I do enjoy the actual work I do!!

Now someone stop me, I'm getting carried away chosing crafty things on Etsy!!

At 19:55 Blogger dabbler said...

DG, (with due apologies to anyone who may actually work for an insurance provider, or be the billing person at a healthcare provider's) They're a PITA because 1) No one, including them, understands how the plan works, and 2) they think they have power and 3)they are sure the patient doesn't.

As far as my experience shows, the system does not work for anyone except, maybe, the shareholders.

And Happy Anniversary.

At 20:11 Blogger vampi said...

dabbler, i think they are trained to deny everything and then make it so difficult to question that most do not.

i'm off to see tori amos tonight *twirls*

At 20:50 Blogger merryhousekeeper said...

Quiche, I knew you would keep them, I could see it in your eyes.
Ozai had his vet check today and booster shots, he has made himself quite at home. Kuda the dog and Boots the large wise cat have more than accepted him. When they are home, they just know. so do you. I knew the day I walked on your porch and saw that little face, he would be coming home with us. I left it to the kids to convince the Daddy, but it worked! No more for me, not for awhile, still gotta save the world!

At 21:48 Blogger Martha W. said...

That's really beautiful and inspiring, Lorraine. I hope your post encourages more people to care as much as you do. I never guessed it was what you would or should do, because it's really above and beyond, and so I wish you much happiness in return for your great good deed. It's fun to have lots of cats, isn't it?

Then i bolted from Google to meet with Alan Anton of the junkies...wonderful lunch, soundcheck, rockstar parking by the tour bus, awesome show, free merch.

Dude, this is one of the rockin'est days EVAH!!!

(besides fiendom come of course!!)

Now it's sleep so i can go to the airport in teh morn and fly to 115 degree phoenix to see tori and sit next to Adrianna of The Endless.

I am totally loving life.

And I am off in Albany learning about and dancing with archetypes. Not necessarily wild joyous dances, mind, more like "Who are you, and what parts of me are you, and what parts of you are me, and what should happen between us." Hmm. Have to think about the similarities to what you do, Lorraine, when healing cats.
Confusing, exciting stuff, with internal processor errors.

There's some totally muddled metaphors for ya. Anyway, having the kind of fun that sometimes hurts, but comes out well in the end! love to all...

I blame the cicadae and their infernal racket: they make the heat feel more intense than it already is.

Good Morning!

Glad the gig went well, Quiche. I really loved seeing you and Paul perform live at Fiendom Come. ::sigh:: I wish I lived closer...

Today I'm going to

http://thecrucible.org/

(they are an incredible teaching facility fo welding, sculpture, glass, and all of the industrial arts)

They hae this big "Fire Festival" once a year, with awesome art installations and goodies for sale. I'll try to take pictures.

Oh, and did I mention I'm doing this with Adri?? ::squee:: The fiends will be representing!!

And guess who else is going to be there? Amanda Fucking Palmer. I KNOW!

We're not hanging out with her (we're not that cool), but I love watching her perform. If you ever get a chance to see her live, jump at the opportunity. She is one of the best entertainers I've ever seen.

The only thing that would make today better is if Chantrelle blew off that Tori chick to party with us. I mean really, she's seen her twice this week already. *grin*

Are you *sure* you want to do that, T&A? Wouldn't you *much* rather be in Chicago, reading Principles of Bibliographical Description with me? Fine, fine. Some people have a strange idea of fun. Art festivals and music and all. Sheesh.

My local coffee shops are going to love me these next couple of weeks.

Morning!

Merry Houskeeper just came and took away all the JUNK that was in my yard. Took her half an hour. Would have taken me a weeks.

Fire Festival! Ticia how cool! I know all about it, trust me. Say hi to Boss and my Maddy if you see them! And let me tell you, not to tease, but I have been listening to AFP practice all week, and you have some really cool songs coming up tonight!

And, ah-hem! -I- will have some really cool things going on tonight! I think it is going to rock.

More tea, then more thoughts.

I really wish Merry Housekeeper lived near me...

If I see your boss or Miss Maddy, I'll say hi. As long as they're not busy. I refuse to interrupt people I've never met. *grin*

I'm so thrilled that you got to enjoy AFP's music and company this week. That must have been magical.

I'm looking forward to tonight. Pictures. I must really try to remember to take pictures!
